It was always felt that Hollywood films’ release in India won’t harm the prospects of Bollywood films. But the success of Titanic, King Kong, Spiderman series and more recently the blockbuster collections of 2012 has finally made everyone realize that Hollywood is a force to reckon with in India too. And that’s why all Hindi films scheduled to release on 18 Dec ‘ran away’ to avoid colliding with the release of the biggest film on earth, Avatar. With so much euphoria and curiosity surrounding the film, Avatar was expected to give a fascinating experience. Thankfully, it does! The film is not only a visual treat but is stunningly well made. A must watch for all those who love cinema!

The story of the movie: The year is 2154. A human corporation is assembled in a distant moon, Pandora, in order to colonize it and extract a precious mineral called unobtainium. Pandora is inhabited by strange looking people called Na’vi. The Na’vi are 9 feet in height, their skin is blue and they have tails too. Their way of life is primarily primitive but they reside in perfect harmony with the environment around them. The human researchers on Pandora, under Dr Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) manage to get the Na’vi DNA which enables any human to control and engineer Na’vi bodies of themselves which they called Avatars. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic ex-Marine is dispatched to Pandora and given opportunity to take over his dead twin brother’s place who was an integral part of the Avatar program. He also gets a chance to go through the program and live in the form of Na’vi Avatar. Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) promises Jake that his legs will be fixed if he manages to get information on Na’vi culture and win their trust which in turn will help the military unit. Soon, Jake’s avatar manages to become a member of the Na’vi clan and also falls for a female Na’vi Neyitri (Zoe Saldana), the daughter of the Na’vi chief. Gradually, Jake begins to love Na’vi lifestyle and starts considering as its own. But when the humans start attacking Na’vi to eliminate them, Jake gets in a dilemma as to whether he should be a part of his fellow humans and support their extreme colonization policies or help the Na’vi fight the humans.

Avatar is a masterpiece-no doubt in that! The film not only boasts of some mind-blowing special and visual effects, it has a nice story and execution too which is what makes the film immensely likeable. Moreover, the film is 160 mins long but the best part is that you won’t get bored even for a single moment. There are so many exciting things happening throughout the film that it’ll be difficult even to blink!

James Cameron uses a perfect way of storytelling. He first wonderfully acquainted us with the Na’vis, their way of life, their culture, lifestyle etc and made us fall in love with all these aspects so that our blood boils when the humans barbarously begin harming them later in the film. You rejoice when Na’vi counterattack and you get lump in your throat whenever Na’vi moan and cry helplessly. Thus, Avatar is more of an emotional flick at several points but it is this that will work big time across the world.

Another plus-point is the wonderful depiction of Pandora. It is just like Earth but in several ways, poles apart from our planet. The giant trees, the legendary floating mountains and the animals-the flying banshee and toruk, the strong direhorse, the ferocious thenator and hammerhead, the ugly viperwolf and the blue apes are an interesting watch.

Sam Worthington puts in a worthy performance. He was most impressive as the Na’vi. Zoe Saldana impresses the most with her exciting expressions throughout the film. Of course, it was the CGI that finally made them look wonderful and Na’vi-like. Other Na-vi characters which leave a mark are C C H Pounder (as the queen) and Laz Alonso (Tsu’Tey).

Sigouney Weaver pulled off the ‘I-care-a-damn’ attitude very well. Michelle Rodriguez looked amazing and comes with a brilliant performance. She looks cool navigating the airplane wearing aviator glasses! Stephen Lang perfectly essays the antagonist. The other antagonist Giovanni Ribisi (as Parker Selfridge) also leaves a mark. Others also do a great job.

James Horner’s music was haunting. Mauro Fiore’s cinematography was top-notch and it was nice to see new techniques adopted by the lensman for capturing scenes. Also, the modified 3D Fusion Camera system developed by Cameron and Vince Pace succeeded in providing a visual treat.

The film is nothing without the special effects, CGI and all other kinds of technological advances used in the film. It was undoubtedly a technological feat and also a paisa vasool experience for the viewers! Kudos to each and everyone who contributed in this department!

Finally, James Cameron, the writer and director of the film needs to be lauded for his outstanding work which was no easy task at all. Firstly, it requires vision to think of such a set-up. And it requires patience and meticulous task in executing the film. Cameron succeeds in each and every aspect of making Avatar. Also, he shrewdly and indirectly reminded us of US’ policies towards Iraq. The dialogue “If people are sitting on the $hit we want, you make them your enemies!” sums it up! And finally, what makes Avatar stand out from the rest of SFX films is that in the battle of alien v/s humans, here it is the aliens who finally triumph over the humans!

Some of the best scenes of the film:
1.       Jake’s Avatar running from the beasts
2.       Jake and Neyitri meet for the first time
3.       Neyitri teaches Jake the Na’vi culture
4.       Jake gets his own banshee
5.       The human’s first round of attack on Na’vis
6.       Jake, Doc and other escape from detention
7.       The final 35 minutes

On the whole, Avatar is without a shred of doubt an outstanding flick in all respects. It boasts of some of the best special effects but at the same time, it has soul too. It has universal appeal and that’s why will succeed everywhere in the world. All movie freaks and even those who are not should not be missing Avatar at any cost. The 3D version will of course give you never before sensed experience but this film will be enjoyed in 2D too. JUST GO FOR IT!!

My rating-***** out of 5!

WHEN FILMS DON’T GET A TIMELY RELEASE…

RAAT GAYI BAAT GAYI:

Last week’s discussion of The Hangover brings to my mind another topic of the upcoming film Raat Gayi Baat Gayi (RGBG) which is all set to release on December 31. Presented by Percept, produced by Pritish Nandy and Rajat Kapoor and directed by Saurabh Shukla, RGBG stars Vinay Pathak, Rajat Kapoor, Neha Dhupia Anu Menon, Navneet Nishan and Dalip Tahil. The film was announced 2 years back in 2007 and it’s ready since a long long time. But due to some reason, the film which could have released earlier this year is now finally releasing (and anyways, when Percept is involved, then that film is bound to get postponed!!).

On the other hand, The Hangover released this year and took the world by storm. Unfortunately, RGBG’s plot is very similar to that of The Hangover. While The Hangover was a story of four friends going to LA for a bachelor party only to wake up the next morning and not remembering a thing, RGBG involves three men who attend a party with their wives and where they come across a sexy lady. The men get drunk and when they wake up next day, they couldn’t remember what happened after meeting the lady. So the amnesic angle is common in both of the films but the situations are drastically different.

However, RGBG is not a copy of Hangover as the script of RGBG was written way back and the shooting was also completed last year, some 7-8 months before Hangover released. But the damage is done-a huge section of moviegoing audience has already thrashed RGBG as a ‘copy’. Teasers of RGBG are uploaded on YouTube with the title ‘Promo-Raat Gayi Baat Gayi (Hangover Remake)’. Madness!

Now it remains how RGBG is received by the audience and critics. The exciting news is that it won the Best Film Award at the HBO’s South Asian International Film Festival held in New York in Oct-Nov. This again is an indication of the originality of the script of the film! I hope the lesson is learnt-let’s not waste time in releasing our films.

KHALLBALLI:

Khallballi, on the other hand, seems like a copy of De Dana Dan (but it’s not)! This flick too is ready since a long time. Directed by Ajay Chandok (director of flops like Nehlle Pe Dehlla, Team-The Force etc), it stars Nikhil Dwivedi (who debuted in My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves), Southern siren Sada, Rajpal Yadav, Suresh Menon, Johny Lever, Zakir Hussain, Asrani, Vrajesh Hirjee, Tiku Talsania, Chunky Pandey and many others. The promos of the film began somewhere in September last year and the film was scheduled to release on Jan 9, 2009. But it was pushed forward and since then, there has been no news on the film.

The producer of the film, Azam Khan who had carved out a wise promotional strategy for Phoonk, had even thought of a similar idea for Khallballi. During Phoonk, anyone sitting throughout the film without getting scared was to be given 5 lakhs. For Khallballi, the produced challenged anyone to sit through the film with a straight face without any signs of laughter. And the reward here was double-Rs. 10 lakhs!

After the film got postponed indefinitely, the contest was thrown out of the window and Azam Khan is now busy with Phoonk-2! Even if Khallballi gets a release in near future, it’ll be dubbed as a ‘poor man’s De Dana Dan’ as the plot in both films are almost same-the lovers and other interesting characters inside a hotel leading to mistaken identities and helter-skelter in the end! Very unfortunate!

Shah Rukh Khan arranges a weekend screening of James Cameron’s Avatar for his children

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 16, 2009)

Last evening Shah Rukh Khan was the special guest at the screening of James Cameron’s, Avatar at a suburban multiplex.
Shah Rukh was so enamoured after watching half the film, that he came out of hall and went up to the studio officials and requested them to organise a special screening for his two children and family members. The officials of the studio immediately assured him that they will do the needful.

A source said, “SRK has always been quite fond of science fiction and superhero films. Even as a child, he would always watch similar kind of films. This is why he immediately agreed to attend the special screening of Avatar.

He was also keen to attend the screening of Avatar at the suburban multiplex as the first theatrical promo of his new film My Name is Khan was scheduled to release during the screening. Everybody knows about SRK’s love for superhero films so much so that he is right now in the process of making Ra.One, which will be directed by Anubhav Sinha. SRK loved Avatar, which is why he also wants his kids to watch it.”

Earlier this month, SRK’s children couldn’t wait to watch Paa and Amitabh Bachchan had sent some extra passes for them on SRK’s request. “Aryan and Suhana love films and they would love to watch Avatar. The kids could not watch it last evening with SRK as they were busy with their school and studies,” added the source.

Vijay Singh, Indian CEO of the company which produced Avatar, confirmed the news and said, “Shah Rukh was very excited about Avatar and the scale on which it was made. He requested another screening on Saturday so that he could watch the film again with his family. We will definitely and will decide on the venue and time today.”

K2: Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are paired together after eight years in My Name Is Khan
First look of Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan going to 70 countries on TV tonight at 10

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; December 16, 2009)

It has the ‘K’ factor going for it. Eight years after Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Kajol came together for one of the biggest Bollywood blockbusters of all time — Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham, the charismatic trio are presenting the trailer of their February 12, 2010 release, Fox Star Studios’ My Name Is Khan, tonight. Yes, look out for it, Star TV Network will beam the first look of the first production by SRK and KJo together at 10 pm across 70 countries worldwide. So wherever you are, you can catch the promo for sure.

Says Karan, “This is the first time ever in the history of Bollywood that the promos of a film will play across such a wide platform. And, this has mainly been made possible because of our synergy with Fox. It is my first production with SRK and also the first time a Bollywood company is tying up with a mainstream Hollywood studio. So, there are many firsts to this venture.” He adds, “The idea of the launch was suggested to us by Fox. Both Shah Rukh and I felt that it was the best way to flag off our campaign. We wanted to create a road block and since Star has such a broad base globally, we both conferred that it would be an ideal way to launch our first promos.’’

For Karan, the film is not just his biggest professional challenge, it is also an emotional journey. One of India’s brightest production talents says, “Shah Rukh and Kajol have never gone wrong in their pairing. For me, combining with these two actors is not only a professional high, it is also an emotional bond. The three of us have done two super-hit films in the past — Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham (K3G). Now, we’re hoping that we can recreate the same magic with My Name Is Khan.’’

The buzz is that this is the most expensive deal to have ever gone through in Bollywood history. Unconfirmed reports say that Fox picked up the film for Rs 100 crore and will release it with 600 prints overseas, making it the widest release
for a Bollywood film on foreign shores. Theatrical trailers of the film have been attached to the prints of James Cameron’s Avatar that is releasing today. Trade analyst Komal Nahta says, “Never before has there been such excitement over a film, nor has there been such a wide release for any Bollywood film so far.’’

John Abraham will not only star in but also co-produce Shirish Kunder’s directorial venture Alien Sahib. John will go back to his lean physique in the film, which will be simultaneously released in 3D and 2D formats

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 14, 2009)

Shirish Kunder’s second directorial venture (after Jaan-E-Mann) is fast getting ready to go on the floors. Incidentally, John Abraham will not only star in the film but also co-produce it with Shirish

Another surprise is the title of the film. While Shirish had registered a host of titles Animals, Banjo Party, Bachelor of Love, Joker, Muscle Power, Son of a Gun, Technicolor and Triple Cross, the title of this film is not going to be any of the abovementioned names. John and Shirish have come up with an altogether new title, Alien Sahib. A source says, “It is not John who plays an alien in the film. Like Rakesh Roshan did something in Koi Mil Gaya that resulted in an alien being introduced in the film, here too John does something that brings an alien into the story. But, Alien Sahib will not be a sci-fi film.”

John will start prepping up for Alien Sahib after he completes Nishikant Kamat’s action film. Viewers will get to see John’s new lean physique in Alien Sahib. In fact, he will be as lean as he was in his debut film Jism. “John has a bulky body in Nishikant’s film but he will have to shed several pounds before he faces the camera for Alien Sahib. He will have to lose at least 8 kgs,” adds the source.

Although Alien Sahib will be a 3D film, it will simultaneously release as a 2D film in theatres.

Commenting on the film, John says, “Alien Sahib is a simple, endearing story with beautiful emotions. I am really excited about it because it has a beautiful story. Human stories always strike a chord.”

When asked what made John and him think of co-producing the film, Shirish says, “John and I have been in talks for more than a year to do this film but John had other commitments. He and I are quite similar in nature. We realised that we were on the same page so it would be better if both of us are involved in the making of the film.”

Giving more details about Alien Sahib, Shirish says, “We will be getting foreign technicians for this film. Lately, John and I have been talking to quite a few them. Moreover, we will be using a fusion digital 3D camera, a technique which has been used in James Cameron’s Avatar.”

The filmmaker and actor signed the contract on December 9, which was Shirish and Farah’s fifth wedding anniversary. The lead actress for Alien Sahib is yet to be finalised.

By Taran Adarsh, November 24, 2009 – 08:42 IST

The forthcoming biggies will include the first look promos of keenly-anticipated movies. While the promos of RANN and CHANCE PE DANCE have already been unveiled, the first promo of Salman Khan’s epic story VEER will be included with the prints of DE DANA DAN. That’s not all, the first promo of Karan Johar’s much-in-news MY NAME IS KHAN will be unveiled with James Cameron’s AVATAR, which opens globally on December 18.

It must be noted that Fox Star Studios India will distribute MY NAME IS KHAN in India, while Fox Searchlight will distribute the SRK – Kajol starrer in the U.S. and 20th Century Fox will do so in the rest of the world. In fact, Karan was keen to show his close friends the first look of the film last Wednesday at Yash Raj, during an exclusive screening of KURBAAN, “but the promo wasn’t ready,” Karan remarked. The countdown has begun…
