Yesterday, we went across the B-town and found that 3 Idiots was the unanimous choice when it came to the best that 2009 had to offer. The closest contender was Paa while Avatar led from the front when it came to Hollywood flicks. However, it was quite a divided opinion when it came to the worst of 2009. Quite a few names popped up, some big (Delhi 6, Chandni Chowk To China), some small (Dil Bole Hadippa), some relatively unknown (Videsh – Heaven on Earth, Victory) and a few completely irrelevant (Deshdrohi). There was also an emotional angle involved with a filmmaker or two criticizing their own effort (Sikandar). Read on:

Ramesh TauraniVictory, which came at the beginning of the year, stays on to be the worst film of 2009 for me.

Shirish Kunder Shirish Kunder – (Smiles) Yes, there is one movie which is really the worst for me. Still, I can’t name it since it’s been made by people known to me!

Kalki – Worst of the year was Billu (Barber) because it was just a series of music videos and nothing else.

Sajid Khan Sajid Khan – Worst movie of the year was Delhi 6. Really, I had a lot of expectations from the film but it turned out to be such a disappointing fare.

Hasnain Hyderabadwaala – The worst film of 2009 is Dil Bole Hadippa. Really, what were the makers thinking? Audiences were taken for granted that the protagonist out there won’t be able to differentiate between a girl and a boy despite a different physicality and voice.

Jagmohan Mundhra Jagmohan Mundhra – I have to pick two films here – Chandni Chowk To China and Kambakkht Ishq.

Rituparna Sengupta – There is nothing really which is worst for me because every movie has some effort going in there.

Ruslaan MumtazBlue is the worst movie of the year

Piyush Jha Piyush Jha – Even though I directed it, I believe worst film of the year was Sikandar. That’s because no one saw it and the media totally ignored its significance. Perhaps that happened because Sikandar didn’t have stars/big backers/comic entertainment. Whatever is the reason, the fact is Sikandar was ignored, and that is the real truth.

Sonu Sood Sonu Sood – (Smiles) Even as the entire year is through, I still can’t decide on one worst movie. Maybe I have missed it.

Suneel Darshan – 2009 started with its worst film Chandni Chowk to China It was a ‘directionless’ disaster that disrespected the viewer’s sensibility.

Sadaa – You are asking me about the worst film of the year? You know what; there have been so many that I don’t even care to remember.

Boney Kapoor Boney Kapoor – Preity Zinta’s Videsh – Heaven on Earth was the worst that 2009 had to offer.

Robby Grewal – Worst of the lot would be Deshdrohi (the film had a staggered release across 2008 and 2009)

Ananth Mahadevan – If I pick one WORST FILM of the year, I might just stir up a hornet’s nest. For, another one might cry out that it was more deserving. So let sleeping dogs lie!

Aanand L Rai – For me, the worst movie in 2009 was Delhi 6. It was a very fine concept and from a rock solid director. Still, it failed.

Hansika Motwani Hansika Motwani – I don’t really wish to pick and choose the worst film of the year because for me every movie is good. I know what are the kind of difficulties that we actors go through so it would be wrong on my part to say that this or that movie was bad!

Tusshar Kapoor – Worst of 2009 would be all those films that were released during the strike. Ha ha ha!

Kunal Deshmukh Kunal DeshmukhChandni Chowk To China was the worst film of the year. What a waste of effort. They could have done so much with the film but that was not the case to be.

Raksha Mistry – Isn’t it ironical that the first film which I saw in 2009 stays on to be worst for me? I am talking about Chandni Chowk To China. Maybe I was expecting a lot from the film’s association with Warner Bros. But then it neither had any locations of China nor Chandni Chowk. Worse, it had no story!

Any kind of calamity, whether natural or man-made, is immediately picked up by the film fraternity to capture the event in celluloid. The 26 July 2005 Mumbai deluge was one of the biggest natural disasters in India in this decade and surprisingly, no film, comprising A-listers was based on it yet. Finally, Tum Mile takes the initiative. It’s a love story and the floods serve as a backdrop. Unfortunately, the ‘flood’ connection wasn’t utilized well and hence, the film fails to impress fully.

The story of the movie: Akshay (Emraan Hashmi) and Sanjana (Soha Ali Khan) become friends when they both were based in Cape Town. Although Akshay was struggling painter and Sanjana was a creative writer cum environmentalist and a daughter of a rich billionaire (Sachin Khedekar), they both hit off well and fall in love. They decide to move in. Unfortunately, both face problems, more so because of Akshay’s financial insecurity. Finally, both have to break up. Six years later, they meet each other once again in a London-Mumbai flight. Things have drastically changed for both Akshay and Sanjana now. However, once they land in Mumbai, they have to go through a roller coaster ride as heavy rains have crippled the entire city. The date was July 26, 2005. They have no choice but to be together in this dark time.

Let’s get one thing straight-although Tum Mile was promoted as a film based on floods, it is actually not. 70% of the film is Emraan-Soha’s flashback in Cape Town. The remaining 30% focuses on the deluge. However, the story wonderfully moves from the present to flashback and back and that’s why the film works a bit.

The first scene of the film is in fact the best one! Weather dept officials who were more interested in playing cards than looking at the warning they received about a downpour just a day before July 26 is a rocking scene! It gives an indication that how the careless attitude of these officials led to a disaster.

The first half of the film has no glitches. The flashback portion begins wonderfully and goes ahead nicely too. Also the scene inside the flight were well executed. The intermission point was scary. However, problems start in the second hour. The flashback scenes quite dragged. Director Kunal Deshmukh could and should have had a crisp narrative. The problems faced by the couple in the floods were engrossing but the climax disappointed. The way both Emraan and Soha accept each other in the climax (after the rains stopped) seemed little indigestible, because their interactions with each other was very limited during the time of crisis. But then it is said, “When you bond during a crisis, the bonding goes deep”. So maybe only the very limited bonding was more than enough for the characters!

The visual effects in the film at some places were tacky and could have been better. The film also exhibits some of the actual footage depicting the horrors of 26/7. But that doesn’t work. Also, factual errors can be noticed-the lead actors are shown wading through chest-deep water in Lower Parel area of Mumbai. However, nothing of that sort had happened there on that day.. In fact, it was in the suburban areas like Juhu, Kalina etc where water had arisen till the first floors. However, some of the horrors of that day were wonderfully captured. Most notable is how the central locking system caused the death of many inside the car after their car’s doors and windows failed to open.

Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan carry the film on their shoulders wonderfully. Emraan delivers a sparkling performance and proves that he’s one of the best performers around. He looked charming, esp in the flashback portions. However, his bespectacled look in the present track is not as great as the similar one he had in Gangster. But still, he manages to do a great job. Watch out for him when he’s high-tempered and in the scene where he enthusiastically paints Soha. A fine actor indeed!

Soha Ali Khan too comes up with a brilliant performance-one of the best of her careers after RDB and Khoya Khoya Chand. She appears confident and it’s great to see that she slipped into her role so easily. Actually, she wasn’t the original choice-Esha Deol was offered the role initially. After she refused due to some reason, Soha was approached!

Mantra, who plays Emraan’s pal, also gives a confident performance. Sachin Khedekar was impressive. Others were good.

Pritam’s music was one of the USPs of the film. The 3 songs which completely rock are the title song, Tu Hi Haqeeqat and Dil Ibaadat. Watch out for Dil Ibaadat-it was just brilliantly executed!

Prakash Kutty’s cinematography was flawless. So was the design.

There was nothing wrong in the story; it was the screenplay that failed at places. Ideally, equal emphasis should have been there for both the tracks. The flood portions were underutilized. Although Kunal Deshmukh’s first venture Jannat was fantastic, Tum Mile isn’t, unfortunately.

On the whole, Tum Mile unfortunately doesn’t work in totality. Performances and music were brilliant but the film was too dragged for no reason. But the film doesn’t bore even for a moment and the first half was great. Watch it if you are an Emraan/Bhatt fan!

In TUM MILE, a couple faces two storms. The storm within, when they come face to face after their breakup. The storm outside, when a natural calamity strikes Mumbai on 26th July, 2005 [unprecedented rainfall devastated Mumbai on this date].

After JANNAT, director Kunal Deshmukh [KD] chooses a love story yet again. It’s about an estranged couple, but the wallpaper in TUM MILE is the Mumbai floods. Naturally then, the expectations from TUM MILE are colossal, given the fact that TUM MILE is the first film that attempts to chronicle the natural calamity on celluloid, with seriousness.

Had KD limited himself to narrating the ups and downs in a live-in relationship, TUM MILE may’ve struck a chord. But if you’re attempting a disaster movie [its promotions send out strong signals], you’d be eager to know how KD recreates the horrors of 26th July on celluloid. Let’s not forget, the catastrophe is still etched in our memory and has tremendous recall-value.

While KD succeeds in depicting the tiffs between the lovers, it’s the disaster aspect that doesn’t make much of an impact. That’s because you strongly feel that the infamous Mumbai floods should’ve been given more prominence, instead of using it as a tool to take the story forward.

26th July, 2005 rang an ominous bell for most, but amidst all the chaos and the tragedy, it re-united two star-crossed ex-lovers.

Two people [Emraan Hashmi, Soha Ali Khan] meet after a hiatus of six years. What starts off as a seemingly innocuous encounter on the same flight back to Mumbai, ends up as a rollercoaster ride through some of the darkest hours of Mumbai, as they see the city get swamped with disaster and loss… and are forced to stick together in this time of crisis.

26th July, 2005 remains etched in your memory and I’m sure, every Mumbaikar would’ve a story to tell vis-à-vis what transpired with them or their beloved/relatives/friends/acquaintances on that fateful day. TUM MILE also highlights the dilemma of a couple, who once shared a beautiful relationship, but have moved on in life after they split, till they meet again on 26th July.

Opposites attract and so do Emraan and Soha in TUM MILE. Although their story goes back and forth several times, the narrative doesn’t confuse the viewer one bit. So far, so good.

But the problem lies in integrating the natural calamity with the love story. Even if you’re a non-Mumbaikar, you’d vividly recall the images that were flashed on news channels continuously or perhaps, you may’ve watched the footage on internet. But in TUM MILE, the nature’s fury doesn’t come across strongly or effectively. In a few scenes, yes, you do draw parallels with real life, but the impact it ought to make is just not there. Something is amiss!

KD has handled the love story very well. The tiffs between Emraan and Soha are so identifiable. The ‘Dil Ibaadat’ song in particular completely moves you. But how one wishes the film would’ve focussed more on the characters’ attempts to escape or cope with the disaster or its aftermath.

Pritam’s music is melodious to the core. The cinematography does justice to the beauty of South Africa [romantic portions] and also during the flood sequences. But the usage of stock footage, at places, doesn’t work. The computer graphics could’ve been better and more effective.

Emraan takes giant strides as an actor. He continues to surprise in film after film. Grossly under-rated despite having delivered competent performances in the past, here’s hoping that people wake up to this talented actor after TUM MILE. Like Emraan, Soha too has evolved into a truly fine actor and TUM MILE proves it. The best part is, Soha is extremely natural and that’s what makes her sequences so believable.

Sachin Khedekar is there for just one sequence. Mantra, as Emraan’s friend, is confident.

On the whole, TUM MILE caters to the youth mainly. At the box-office, the Vishesh Films – Emraan Hashmi combo has cultivated a strong fan-base over the years and coupled with good music, which is also very popular, the film should find itself in the comfortable zone. However, the super-strong opposition in 2012 [also highlighting a disaster on celluloid and which has had a wide release in India] might eat into its business at places.

WHY PEOPLE DOWNLOAD SONGS?

The current scenario for the music industry is bad. Almost everyone is interested in downloading songs from the internet rather than buying audio CDs. A person may be having a strong word against piracy of movies but not against that of songs available on the internet. And there are various reasons for these-a pirated print of a movie may be of bad quality but pirated versions of songs are always perfect. In fact, there’s hardly any difference in quality in the downloaded version and CD version of a song. Secondly, one has to shell out 160 bucks to buy an audio CD but songs on the net are available for free of cost! Also, the songs are on the net are available on the very day that it is released in the market. Thus, this kind of piracy is thriving and people of all classes are downloading songs and stuffing them in their PCs or their phones and iPods.

The reason why I am talking about this is because of Tum Mile, the film which is releasing tomorrow. The wonderful songs of this film were out some 3-4 days before its official release in the market! Websites like songs.pk proudly mentioned on the home page that ‘Tum Mile-Exclusive’! The news spread like wild fire and its songs got the maximum number of downloads. This, of course, infuriated the director (Kunal Deshmukh), the producer (Mahesh Bhatt) and the music director (Pritam) who felt that this would hit the music sales. Mahesh Bhatt, on the other hand, saw a positive side to this tragedy. In his words, “Pirates have declared Tum Mile music a hit. I guess they know more than everyone else. They got to the consumer even before we opened sales. This pretty much speaks volumes about the kind of excitement that the product has generated over the months. The black-waala’s word is always more reliable than that of the critic!

Notwithstanding the anger and positive side to this incident, no one bothered to ask as to how the songs got leaked to the internet in the first place. Some insider was involved, without doubt. Also, why no step is taken to stop piracy of songs? I feel the biggest reason as to why people download songs is because of the price of the audio CD which costs 160 bucks. Ironically, a VCD of a film nowadays is available at as low as Rs. 40! Then why the hell is audio CD priced so much? It’s high time that the prices are reduced to 50 or 60 bucks and I am sure that this will curb illegal downloading by almost 40-50%. Unfortunately, no one wants to do it.

Talking about the film, it stars Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan and is based on the July 26 Mumbai floods. It is directed by Kunal Deshmukh, whose first film Jannat took a surprisingly huge opening and became one of the big hits of 2008. Tum Mile is also expected to open huge. But like everytime, it will be the content that would decide whether or not the film would sustain in the following days. Anything that comes from Bhatt stable is always interesting so let’s hope Tum Mile rocks!

P.S.: An interesting joke is being circulated on the net since 3 days. Keeping in mind the sudden showers in Mumbai since Tuesday, the SMS reads, “Now the Bhatts have made it rain to promote Tum Mile!

AWKWHO WILL WATCH AAO WISH KAREIN?

The other release tomorrow is Aao Wish Karein (AWK), which marks Aftab’s debut as a producer. He has also acted in the film along with Aamna Sharif. It seems more like a kiddie film but unfortunately, like most Hindi films, no attempt was made to publicize AWK well. The film is not on the ‘movies to watch’ list on kids and thus, this would be yet another flop of 2009.

AJAB PREM-4TH BIGGEST OPENER OF ALL TIMES!

Last Friday’s release Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani has thrown a surprise. No one expected it to open so huge. It is on the no 4 slot of biggest openers of all times after collecting Rs 24.5 crores in 3 days! The first week collections are expected to close at around 41 crores. It may also cross Love Aaj Kal’s first week collect of Rs 42.87 crs which are the highest first week collections of 2009. Kudos to the entire team of this film!

One of Bollywood’s most bankable stars, Emraan Hashmi, says people have contantly tried to pull him down. He also believes the new film “Tum Mile” will present him in a new avatar, having mostly essayed roles with shades of grey.

 

“In the kind of industry I am, every creative person has a judgement to make about someone else’s performance. After doing a movie, I may think that I have come up with my best act, but others may think otherwise. You can’t help it,” shrugs Emraan, 30.

“This is something that has happened ever since I made my debut with ‘Footpath’. I went on to deliver successful films practically every year with ‘Murder’, ‘Zeher’ and ‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ followed by ‘Aksar’ and ‘Gangster’. Still people have tried to pull me down,” Emraan said in an interview.

He is sitting pretty on the back to back success of “Raaz – The Mystery Continues” and “Jannat”. A year earlier, he came up with one of the best ever acts of his career in “Awarapan”.

And now he is about to be seen in “Tum Mile”, his most expensive film till date that will release Nov 13. It co-stars Soha Ali Khan.

“It’s a welcome change to have absolutely no grey shades in my character,” says Emraan.

He is positive that after the release of the film, he would be looked upon as someone who can also show a sensitive side.

“For that opportunity, I am thankful to my director Kunal Deshmukh. If not for him, I would have continued playing the kind of roles I have been successful in. In fact, when Kunal spoke to me about the role, I was sceptical because I have never played a full-on romantic guy before.”

He isn’t overtly bothered about certain negative statements about him. “Honestly, I don’t even look aside to see who is around for competition. There is nothing wrong if people choose to reserve certain remarks for me.

“To each his own since I have to basically live up to my own judgement and fulfil the expectations of those who matter,” he says.

He has his fair share of admirers and supporters though.

“Yes, there are some out there who have been quite supportive throughout my career,” he agrees. “My goal is to keep delivering successful solo hero films and also do an occasional multi-hero film if I have an equal part. This is why I agreed to do Milan Luthria’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai’.”

While he has been doing well as an actor after spending more than half a decade in the industry, does he have any plans to turn producer?

“I don’t want to be in the hot seat,” shoots Emraan in a tone of mock horror. “Mukeshji (Bhatt) tells me that being a producer is the toughest job in the world. I agree with him since he has decades of filmmaking experience.

“Today I am happy being an actor. Any aspirations to be producer are best kept on hold for a later stage.”

Tum Mile

Mahesh Bhatt, who saw Tum Mile earlier this week, was unhappy that it focused more on the disaster than the love story. So, he chopped off 10 minutes of flood scenes. The film is based on July 2005 Mumbai deluge. Bhatt says, “The film did not turn out the way Kunal had visualised it.

The film is not about the disaster, but the love story. I just toned down the disaster scenes to make it more viewer-friendly.”Commenting on the editing that Bhatt did, director Kunal Deshmukh says, “I was dead against cutting some portions of the flood scenes because I thought that they really stood out. Bhattsaab wanted to play up the love angle and I understood his point of view when I saw the film after 10 minutes had been chopped off. I loved the flow.”

Tum Mile

Tum Mile is just a month away from its release date, November 13, but that has not stopped producer Mahesh Bhatt from wanting to change the title of his film.

Bhatt feels that the current title makes it sound like a romantic film, which it is not. The film has Mumbai’s July 2005 deluge as its backdrop.

He has suggested Aandhi, Toofan or Rain as the possible options. However, director Kunal Deshmukh is keen on the original title and is trying his best to retain it.

Mahesh Bhatt says, “I made a suggestion to Kunal to change the title of the film. The new title should have mass appeal so that more people can relate to the film.

Kunal has his own arguments about Tum Mile being apt, but we will sort out the issue soon.”
