CHANCE PE DANCE

Backed by the success of 3 of the genre defining blockbusters of 2009 – KAMINEY, WAKE UP SID and DEV.D, UTV Motion Pictures announced an aggressive line up of 4 films for the period of January – March 2010.

The slate for 2010 kicks off with CHANCE PE DANCE, which has been directed by Ken Ghosh and stars Shahid Kapoor, as the talented and passionate Sameer with a never-say-die attitude and Genelia, as a beautiful and spirited choreographer, Tina. The film will have a worldwide release on 15th January.

HARISHCHANDRACHI FACTORY, India’s official entry to the Oscars this year, will hit the screens on 22nd January. This acclaimed Marathi film directed by Paresh Mokashi is a UTV production, co-produced with Paprika Media and Mayasabha. The film has also been screened for the BAFTA and Golden Globe juries, apart from various other film festivals.

PETER GAYA KAAM SE, a fast-paced action adventure movie with a romantic twist, is directed by John Owen. Starring Rajeev Khandelwal and Lekha Washington, this film is about Peter, a football crazy motorcycle taxi rider, who decides to turn his back on Goa and quit his job – until his sleazy loan shark boss Bosco persuades him to do one last job – the job that will change his life forever. Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures said, “While 2009 has been a low year for the film industry in general, we released some interesting films which etched themselves in the minds of the audience. DEV.D, KAMINEY and WAKE UP SID created new benchmarks for what can now be perceived as commercial cinema. Our slate for 2010 promises to be a very entertaining mix and we are very excited to be bringing audiences such a wide array of interesting cinema.”

The much-anticipated releases by UTV in 2010 include Prakash Jha’s RAAJNEETI, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s GUZAARISH, Anees Bazmee’s THANK YOU, Rajkumar Gupta’s NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, Vishal Bhardwaj’s EK BATAA SAAT, Aamir Khan Productions’ DELHI BELLY and PEEPLI LIVE.

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL: (From top) Stills from Luck By Chance, Kaminey, Love Aaj Kal

Heroines today are much more comfortable with their sexuality than ever before

DEEPALI DHINGRA Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; September 29, 2009)

Did you cringe with discomfort when a seemingly innocent child woman Isha Sherwani seduced Farhan Akhtar into bed in Luck By Chance? Or, more recently, when a salwar kameez-clad Priyanka Chopra managed to convince a reluctant Shahid Kapoor to have sex with her in Kaminey, by telling him that she knows ‘homescience’ and that it’s ‘safe to do it’? More likely than not, you smiled at their boldness and prepared for more to come. Seduction was a game played by vamps in Bollywood in the 70s and 80s. Much later, lead actresses like Bipasha Basu and Priyanka Chopra were sexually charged in Jism and Aitraaz respectively. But even then, they were the ‘bad girls’. Well, times have changed — even the ‘good’ girls are taking a turn for the ‘bad’ and the audiences are lapping it up!

Watch newcomer Mahie Gill throwing herself in full abandon at Abhay Deol in a mustard field in Dev. D and you’ll know what we’re talking about. Trade analyst Komal Nahta says he isn’t surprised at this change. “Films, after all, are a reflection of today. Girls are proposing to guys, they are using seduction as a tool even in real life. The major composition of the audience comprises youth, so they have to show what the young generation identifies with,” he says. So Kareena Kapoor playfully hands Akshay Kumar her
bra in Tashan and Konkona SenSharma suggests a quick bout of love-making to Rahul Bose in Dil Kabaddi before they turn in for the night and Deepika Padukone has no qualms with Saif Ali Khan kissing her full on the mouth in the car in Love Aaj Kal. Agrees Mahie, “Reel life follows real life. Women today are more vocal about their sexual desires than what they were about a decade back. The audience today wants to see characters they can identify with. That’s why the boldness depicted by the newer lot of actresses has been accepted.”

According to film director Onir, a growing section of audiences in urban centres are accepting this change. “Independent working women watch these films with their male friends and colleagues who treat them as equals and therefore, accept their portrayal on screen as well,” he says. Also, the younger generation of filmmakers who have grown up seeing women as friends and colleagues, are showing female characters as they are, says Onir.

The producers of Aage se Right wanted to run a promotional campaign in which the winner would get a real gun. The censor board and the police were not amused
By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 24, 2009)

The contest’s poster

UTV’s forthcoming film, Aage Se Right has been shot down by the censor board even before the release. A particular gun is an essential part of the film. So, the producers along with the marketing and promotion team, decided to weave the film’s campaign around the gun. They planned a contest where the winner would be awarded a real gun.

Just when they were about to launch the campaign, they received a notice from the police authorities and the censor board. The notice forbade the producers from going ahead with the campaign and giving out a real gun as a prize. Our source said, “The authorities felt that the use of guns was being promoted. What if the gun fell into the wrong hands? We live in sensitive times and something like this could be misused. So, an online contest will replace the television contest.”

Moreover, the campaign had to be drastically toned down as UTV’s Vice President, marketing, Shikha Kapur, said, “We are extremely disappointed about the concept being vetoed by the authorities. We had to rewrite the entire concept. Now we have to give air pistols instead of real guns.”

Aage Se Right stars Kay Kay Menon, Shreyas Talpade, Shehnaz Treasurywala and Mahie Gill.

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, April 13, 2009 – 15:42 IST

Characters:

Shreyas Talpade (Dinkar Waghmare)

A small town character, 28 years old sub-inspector working for the Mumbai Police. He has never solved a case and has always stayed away from serious action. His late father was a successful police officer. He is constantly reminded of his failure by his nagging mother and feels pressure to live up to his father’s giant image.

Dinkar Waghmare loses his gun and is under extreme pressure, humiliation and shame.

His troubles become more complicated and serious as the story starts 4 days before the annual Police day function. Over the four days that he tries to recover his lost gun, he unwittingly encounters the biggest stalwarts of the Mumbai underworld and international terrorism by sheer coincidence and luck, ends up solving big cases.

Fate and his gun Bajrangbali stickered gun make him an unlikely hero.

Mahie Gill (Soniya Bhatt)

The attractive, overzealous television news reporter who is an absolute sensationalist. It is her character that plays the role of the ‘sutradhar’ who links the different parts of the film. She keeps asking for viewers’ opinion on various topics through a sponsored SMS.

Dinkar Waghmare has always been in awe of her and watches her regularly on TV. She meets him for the first time when he accidentally becomes a hero. She is amused by this clumsy, sweet man who unwittingly always saves the day.

Kay Kay Menon (Janubhai alias Balma Rashidul Khairi)

The serious terrorist. 30 year old good looking personality. Balma has taken the named Janu as an alias. He has been sent to India by a terrorist group to carry out terror missions in Mumbai.

He transforms into romantic and loves Indian food and the Bombay Life! He starts to change as a human being, softening, when he falls in love at first sight with a bar girl named Pearl and realizes that his mission of terror was no his true calling as a warrior, but he has been chosen to follow the path of Love by Allah.

He speaks fluent Urdu but no one in Bombay can understand so he takes it upon himself to learn the Mumbai street (Tapori) lingo during his various attempts at wooing his lady lobe. Dinkar’s and Janu’s paths keep crossing without them meeting each other until the climax where together they defeat the evil face of terrorism.

Shehnaz Treasurywala (Pearl)

She is the heroine of our film and the object of Janu’s affections. She is absolutely gorgeous and sensuous but at the same time there is a sense of an innocence of a bygone era.

An aspiring actress in Bollywood, she is the most popular dance girl in a dance bar where she works part time. Her first break is an item number in the extravagant police show. She is intrigued and amused by Janu and taken by his boyish charm.

Shiv Pandit (Sunny)

Sunny is a 25 year old young man who is in love with the Police Commissioner’s daughter Suhasini and can do anything for her. He is a street smart and fool hardly tapori. He has the amazing skill of mimicry and sound effects and creates much confusion.

Tabu refuses to look younger than her age for the flashback scenes in The Legend of Kunal. The hunt for a young Tabu is on
By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 18, 2009)

Tabu

Actresses over the years have felt flattered to play characters much younger than their real age.Years ago Mala Sinha, when she was pushing 40, actually got into a frock to play a school girl in Paisa Ya Pyar. But that’s not the case with Tabu.

38-year-old Tabu, who is playing the character of Tishyarakshitra, Emperor Ashoka’s (played by Amitabh Bachchan) wife in the period film The Legend of Kunal, has refused to be shown younger for certain scenes. Incidentally, Tabu had no qualms about playing a woman at least twice her age in Mahesh Manjrekar’s Astitva (2000).

Chandraprakash Dwivedi, director of The Legend of Kunal elaborated, “Before Tabu said no to looking younger, we had planned to make both Amitji and Tabu lose years on screen. With Amitji, the process of looking younger for the flashback would’ve been much more difficult. But we had consulted make-up artistes from abroad and they had assured us that it could be done. With Tabu, the process would’ve been much easier because she can look like a 20-year-old without prosthetic support. But she refused. ‘Take a younger artiste to play my character’s young portion,’ Tabu suggested. When she opted out, we naturally had to change plans of making Amitji look younger.”

Now Dwivedi is hunting for actors who resemble the Big B and Tabu but are half their age. The director said, “We haven’t found the actors to play the young Amitji and Tabu yet. But we aren’t worried because they occupy a very small portion of the narrative. And also the shooting starts at the end of 2009.”

The Legend of Kunal is a period film which encapsulates the last years of the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka’s life and highlights his relationship with his son, Kunal.

FENIL’S SUGGESTION: Get Sonu Sood to play younger Big B! And maybe, Mahie Gill will fit in as young Tabu!!
