Mumbai: Three-and-a-half months after he was arrested for allegedly raping his maid in his own bedroom, actor Shiney Ahuja won bail from the Bombay high court on Thursday after his lawyer argued that there were inconsistencies in the rape complaint. He was, however, asked to leave Mumbai and stay in Delhi until he is required for the trial.
The 36-year-old actor’s jail stay will not end for at least another day. As the court order and the subsequent paperwork was not complete by the end of office hours and thanks to the holiday for Gandhi Jayanti on Friday, Shiney will finally step of Arthur Road jail only on Saturday, said his lawyers.
Apart from setting a bail amount of Rs 50,000 and a surety of the same amount, Justice A P Deshpande said the actor should surrender his passport and warned him against offering inducement to witnesses, directly or indirectly, and tampering with evidence.
Loveleen Tandan, co-director of Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire has made it to the super-prestigious Women’s Impact Report 2009 of Variety magazine. The report lists 50 women, who, in the words of Variety, “experienced an extraordinary year”.
Loveleen didn’t even know about the honour until she got a midnight call from Anil Kapoor in Los Angeles. Loveleen says, “Anil asked me if I had seen it. I asked, seen what? He then told me I’m on the cover of Variety magazine as an achiever of the year. He said he had bought two copies and was mailing me one. That was sweet of him.”
Interestingly, this achiever’s name occurs in the ‘Below The Liners’ section of Variety’s achievers where she features with fashion designers Catherine Marie Thomas and Janie Bryant. “I think it’s a category that celebrates women who have crossed over from one field to another, like I did from casting director to co-director in Slumdog Millionaire,” adds Loveleen.
While Loveleen will not attend the Variety awards ceremony in LA today due to personal reasons, she will not miss the chance to go to the Buckingham Palace where she has been invited. “I’ve been invited by Queen Elizabeth and the Duke to the Buckingham Palace on October 13. I wouldn’t miss that appointment for the world, but there’s a problem. My younger sister Amita is getting married on October 14 so I didn’t want to go to London on October 13. But, my sister didn’t want me to give it a miss as she feels it’s an once-in-a-lifetime honour. So I will be going to Buckingham Palace on October 13 and rushing back to Delhi just in time for her wedding on October 14,” she says.
Meanwhile, Loveleen has almost finished the script for her first directorial venture. “Of course, it has strong women characters but my film also has a lot of powerful men,” says Loveleen.

If our favourite Tinkle character Suppandi were to don a Bollywood avatar, who do you think would fit the bill? Ranbir Kapoor, perhaps? Animation and VFX veteran Biju D, who is all set to direct a stereoscopic 3D animation on Suppandi, disagrees. “The work doesn’t end at finishing the voice-over for Suppandi,” Biju says. “The character would demand a lot more. Bollywood stars may not be able to give me that kind of time.”
The filmmaker wants to cast a theatre person to do the voice-over for Suppandi, someone who is lean and very energetic, like Suppandi’s character. Samir Patil, the CEO of ACK Media, the developers of 3D technology for this film, intends for it to appeal to adults too, the ones who grew up reading Tinkle. And how does the creator of Suppandi, Uncle Pai react to the venture? Samir says, “Uncle Pai has had a cataract operation recently and hence is unavailable. But being an innovator at heart, he is very excited about one of his favourite characters coming to life on the big screen.” The film is set for release in November 2010.
Singer and actor Himesh Reshammiya is elated about crossing the 500 songs-mark as a composer. With Mann ka radio from Radio, Himesh has successfully composed 500 songs and is planning to celebrate in a grand fashion. Himesh plans to felicitate his father Vipin Reshammiya at the party, as he attributes all his success to him. The details of the party are being worked out and Himesh plans to invite everyone from the industry.
Our source says, “Himesh is riding high as the music of Radio has been received well by the audience. In fact, Himesh didn’t know that Mann ka radio was his 500th song till his manager told him about it. It has been 11 years since he first recorded Odh li chunariya for Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya in 1998. Now, he’s close to completing 100 films as a music composer. Himesh has decided to thank all the people who have helped him in his career. In the mid-October bash, he will also felicitate Bhushan Kumar of T-Series for his association with him since 11 years. Amitabh Bachchan will be specially invited for the party, even as Radio’s release will clash with Amitabh’s Paa.”
Himesh doesn’t seem too perturbed about the clash as he says, “I would love to invite everyone who is responsible for my success and of course, Bachchansaab, who is my idol and inspiration. It will be my privilege if he comes. I am aware that my film’s release clashes with Paa, but I see it as an honour to be pitted against such a legend. We are releasing the film on December 3, a Thursday, due to astrological reasons.”

The Bombay high court on Wednesday was hearing the bail plea of actor Shiney Ahuja who is accused of raping his domestic help. The court will pass its order on Friday.
Though the domestic help claimed to be raped between 3 pm and 5 pm, the records from the phone company showed that she was speaking on her cellphone between 3.15 pm and 3.45 pm, said Shiney’s lawyers Shirish Gupte and Srikant Shivade on Wednesday.
The fact that the girl only mentioned the word “atyachar (torture)’’ in her statement on oath before the magistrate and not “rape’’ was also discussed. Justice A P Deshpande asked for the dictionary meaning of atyachar and Gupte said it, in no way, meant rape. But public prosecutor Sangeeta Shinde said the 20-year-old domestic help’s FIR and medical evidence pointed at rape and that atyachar had to be construed in the context of the incident.
The judge found it strange that neither the girl’s nor Shiney’s clothes had semen or blood stains on them given that she had worn her clothes “immediately after the alleged forcible sexual intercourse’’. The defence also wanted to know how the police officer had access to lab reports of the maid’s vaginal swabs when the same documents were denied to Ahuja by the sessions judge.
When the judge asked why the police had not recorded any statement of the neighbours, the state’s lawyer said, “In these sophisticated housing societies, neighbours do not bother to interfere even if someone dies.’’ The judge said it was not true as it was a neighbour who took the maid to the police station to lodge a complaint.
After their marriage, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan have seldom been seen apart. Be it filmi events, the Cannes festival, films such as Sarkar Raj and forthcoming films Raavana and Crooked or even a recent episode of the Oprah Winfrey show, the doting couple is always seen hand-in-hand, smiling happily much to the delight of photographers.
Now, the couple is ready to take brand Bachchan to an altogether next level with a soap commercial. Buzz is that they are being paid a whopping Rs 25 crore for the ad. The deal, which has been kept under wraps, was finalised four days ago.
Explaining why the couple was paid an exorbitant amount, that too for an ad film, a source said, “The endorsement market is booming right now. Also, it will be the first time that Abhishek and the Bachchan bahu will be seen together in a commercial. The couple had been in talks for a long time with the ad filmmakers, who were extremely keen to get the two together. They finally agreed to be part of the ad last week.”
The ad is likely to be shot abroad.
