Rajkumar Hiran

Tied up with the post-production of 3 Idiots, Rajkumar Hirani is juggling several tasks in his quest to make that perfect film with lots of help from the cast. It is the Munnabhai series director’s third project and he is aware that comparisons are inevitable. He remains unfazed as he believes that any film he makes should satisfy himself and the audience should love it. As Hirani prepares to unveil a new set of promos of 3 Idiots we ask him…

There are some unique buttock chairs for the 3 Idiots in the new promos?
I had them specially made. Several years ago, I had seen a snapshot of similar looking stuff and it remained etched in my memory. Now I felt it went well with the 3 Idiots of the film. This sequence is part of the song. We will be keeping these chairs at select cinema halls as well the chairs of the Idiots!

Why have you stuck to the same production house (Vidhu Vinod Chopra Productions) for all your projects?
You don’t go casting production houses. Moreover the colour of the money is the same everywhere, isn’it?

How easy or difficult was it to make 3 Idiots compared to Munnabhai?
This was the easiest film for me to make. Everyone in the unit was so eager and co-operative. We rehearsed before the shoot. I like to work that way.

On dealing with Aamir the Mr Perfectionist and Mr Interfering.
Thank God for that! There can all be kinds of buzz about Aamir but it is a delight to work with people who go beyond. I have always encouraged opinions from the cast and crew.

You have Aamir Khan as a college student?
The movie moves in two time spans. The fact that I was going to show Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi as college students was the least of my worries. In the movie, Aamir looks the youngest; he has the ability to get into the character. Seeing is believing. My bigger worry was how to make everyone love the film.

R Madhavan, Aamir Khan and Sharman Joshi in 3 Idiots

Were you part of the feedback trials that Aamir held for friends and family?

Yes. Everyone desires to make the perfect film. So it is all for the betterment of the film. I love to hear feedbacks and then we go by the majority voice even if it involves making changes.

You made Kareena gain weight for the film?
My brief to the actors was to lose as much weight as possible while to the actress it was to gain the kilos. That is my style of working. Most would work the other way round. Aamir, Madhavan and Sharman had to lose it, while Kareena had to pile it on. She has a deglam, simple look in the film.

Was Kajol initially to feature in the film?
I don’t know where that buzz started from.

So finally, is 3 Idiots Five Point Someone or not at all?
Chetan Bhagat had sent across his book Five Point Someone to me. I guess he had it in his mind that it could be made into a movie. After going through it I called him up and told him that it was possible. A book is anecdotal but when you make a film it needs a plot. When I started working on the script, lots of thoughts cropped up. Yes, the movie is completely different from the book. But then if Chetan had not sent the book, I would not have made 3 Idiots. He has seen the script but not the film yet.

Sanjay Dutt agrees to star in Golmaal 3, which will feature almost all the stars from the earlier two films

By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 30, 2009)

Sanjay Dutt

After his recent success with All The Best, director Rohit Shetty is set to start Golmaal 3. Although Rohit is still finalising the film’s script, its star cast is already in place with Sanjay Dutt being the new entrant in the series. Sanjay, apparently, has agreed to be a part of the multi-starrer.

A source reveals, “Rohit and Ajay Devgan mutually decided to first go ahead with Golmaal 3. The male actors in the film will be more or less the same as the earlier two Golmaal films with Ajay, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, though Arshad Warsi and Sharman Joshi will not be a part of it. Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and Mugdha Godse are also being considered to star in Golmaal 3.”

“The film will go on the floors in April next year and the actors have been asked to give the required dates. The film will be shot at an international location,” adds the source.

Rohit says, “I’m still in the scripting process. Nothing has been finalised yet. Once my script is ready, we will proceed with the rest of the work.”

When asked about Sanjay also being a part of the film, he says, “How many stars are you going to give me? That’s too big a star cast. I can’t have 12-14 stars in my film. That Sanjay is now part of the film is not true. Once I finish the script, we will make an announcement.”

The official spokesperson from producers Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision says, “Golmaal 3 is still in the planning stage. We aim to start the shooting in March.”

Perizaad Zorabian delivered her second child, a baby boy, yesterday

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 30, 2009)

Perizaad Zorabian is on cloud nine as her wish has come true. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy at 11.30 am yesterday.

After marrying Boman Irani in 2006, Perizaad had their first child, a daughter named Zaha, in November 2007. When Mumbai Mirror broke the news of her second pregnancy earlier this year in July, Perizaad had said, “Daughters are darlings and I have experienced that. Now I want to experience what it is like to have a son.”

The baby boy was born at Lilavati Hospital, Bandra. Perizaad’s friend said, “It was a caesarean delivery. Perizaad and Boman took the Hindu and Parsi calendars into account and settled on an auspicious date for the caesarean operation to be carried out. Perizaad is very happy. Her family is now complete. The couple has shortlisted a few names for their newborn son.”

Confirming the news, Perizaad’s manager said, “Perizaad has delivered a baby boy.  She and the newborn are doing fine.”

Amar Singh turns script advisor for Bengali film Sesh Sanghat, produced by Jaya Prada. He is also acting in the film

By PTI (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 30, 2009)

After brief roles in a couple of Bollywood films, Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh is now a script advisor for a Bengali film in which he is also acting.  “This film is about a struggle between the landless and the land grabbers, the haves and the have-nots. The entire story of the film is very topical considering today’s situation in West Bengal,” says Singh.

Jaya Prada is producing the film and is also playing the lead role in Sesh Sanghat (The Last Conflict) while Singh plays the role of an ex-minister in Bengal who sympathises with the tribal movement and guides an honest cop, played by Jackie Shroff, in dealing with the land agitation issue.

Singh has no intention of changing his profession permanently and says, “I certainly don’t want to stick to acting. I am an avid movie buff so I cannot say no to actors whom I have grown up watching. Moreover, since Jaya is very closely associated to me and my party, how could I have said no to her?”

National award-winning director Ashok Viswanathan said, “Amarji assisted us in the script as he is playing a retired minister and there was quite a bit of technical and official language used in the film which he helped us with. He also helped us in understanding the issue of land acquisition and industrialisation versus tribal rights.”

Abbas Tyrewala considers the first week of July lucky, will wait patiently with an almost ready-for-release, 1-800-LOVE, till July 2010

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 30, 2009)

John Abraham and Abbas Tyrewala

1-800-LOVE, Abbas Tyrewalas’s next film after Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na is nearly complete, but you will see no sign of it till July 2010. And that’s because Abbas wants to make sure that the magic of the lucky July week that worked with Jaane Tu… holds true for 1-800-LOVE too. Jaane Tu was released in July last year and was a sensational success. Abbas now plans to release all his films in July and is convinced that they’ll work.

Surprisingly, 1-800-LOVE’s producer is willing to bear the mounting costs of the post-production delay. “I guess I’m lucky,” Abbas says. “Even though the shoot is done and there’s just one song left, my producer is with me in the decision to release the film in the same week as Jaane Tu… Actually, I would love to release 1-800-LOVE on July 4, the same date as Jaane Tu… but it isn’t a Friday.”

They are to choose between July 2 and 9, 2010, as the release date. “And if I had my way, I would release all my films in the same week, depending on how accommodating my producers are in the future.”

And as we wonder if we can pass this off as superstition, Abbas protests, “Look, even otherwise, the first quarter of 2010 is clogged with exams and other stuff. I would rather release my films when schools and colleges are shut because they are the audience for all my films.”

Just for Abbas’s information both schools and colleges in Mumbai re-open by July.”

On Sunday, filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani found acid thrown on his car, and the bizarre attack is causing him much anguish

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 30, 2009)

Rajkumar Hirani

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has been a victim of vandalism. On Sunday afternoon, Raju found that acid had been poured on his precious white Honda Accord. The bizarre attack left the boot of the car and the side door charred. What’s more shocking is that his car was attacked in broad daylight.

Our source said, “These days, Raju has been editing 3 Idiots from 9am till night at producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s office in Santacruz. On Sunday afternoon, Raju was informed that his car’s boot and a side door have been completely charred. A shocked Raju immediately rushed to his car to check the damages.”

A police complaint has been registered. “Raju has had a fixed schedule since the last few days for the post-production of 3 Idiots. Police are investigating whether it is an accident or foul play. Since construction work is going on nearby, they haven’t ruled out the possibility of a prank,” added the source.

Of course, such damage can be heart wrenching. A source close to Raju confirmed the news and said, “Raju is heartbroken and worried. After the police investigation, the car has now been sent to the garage. He is waiting for the investigation results.”

Raju Hirani remained unavailable for comment.

Close friends Nana Patekar and Prakash Jha had a heated argument on the sets of Rajneeti; Nana stormed out of the sets and refuses to be placated despite repeated attempts by Jha

By Mumbai Mirror Bureau (October 30, 2009)

Prakash Jha Nana Patekar

The hotheaded Nana Patekar fought with his closest friend, director Prakash Jha, while they were shooting together in Bhopal for Rajneeti. On Wednesday afternoon, the two had a serious fight on the sets following which Nana walked out of the sets. Since then, all attempts by Jha to convince Nana and cool him down have been in vain.

A source from the sets said, “No one knows what exactly happened because of which Nana completely lost his cool. The two were discussing some scenes when an argument ensued as Nana had a different take on the scenes while Prakash Jha had another opinion on how to shoot them. The discussion soon turned into a long and heated argument and eventually led to a big fight.”

According to the source, the fight turned ugly and abusive in front of the entire unit and it reached a stage where Nana grabbed Prakash Jha’s collar. However, better sense prevailed and Nana stormed off the sets and reached his hotel room from where he booked his tickets to Mumbai. In the evening, Prakash Jha called up Nana to placate him but he refused to budge. All attempts by unit members to convince Nana not to go to Mumbai failed and Nana is in no mood to shoot for the film.

Commenting on Nana’s remaining portions in Rajneeti, another source said, “Many vital scenes with Nana still have to be shot and Prakash Jha is worried about what will happen next. Whatever happens, Nana has sworn that he won’t work with Jha again.”

Jha confirmed the news that he and Nana had a serious quarrel on Wednesday after which Nana stormed out of the sets. “But this is not the first time that Nana has done this, or is it? Difference of opinions toh hote hi rehte hain. He still has to shoot for the film. I don’t know if he doesn’t want to work with me anymore. You’ll have to ask him because he hasn’t said so to me.”

Nana Patekar remained unavailable for comment.

Nikhil Advani’s Patiala House is inspired by large patriarchal families that live under the same roof for generations

By Meena Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 30, 2009)

Akshay Kumar Anushka Sharma

Nikhil Advani is reportedly borrowing a leaf out a South Mumbai family’s life… and basing his film Patiala House on them. The family is apparently the Malhotras of Malabar Hill who, for three generations, have been living together. The head patriarch Malhotra still rules. All additions to the family are put in adjoining buildings and this is one of the largest joint families in India. Important decisions are taken by the senior Malhotra and everyone else adheres to it.

The trade buzz is that Akshay Kumar, who heard this story from Nikhil Advani, was very kicked about it. In fact, he even suggested the title Patiala House to Nikhil, just like he had suggested Singh Is Kingg to Vipul Shah.

Akshay Kumar agrees, “I wanted a title that suggested largeness in terms of numbers. Patiala is synonymous with a large peg and that is understood universally as something which is bigger than regular. Hence, Patiala House, a cluster of several houses that hosts a whole of family and cousins.”

In the movie, the character of the patriarch is played by Gurkreeat Singh Kalon (Rishi Kapoor) who rules and runs his family life just like a prime minister would run a government. He is a strict disciplinarian whose authority and rules are not questioned in Patiala House. Set in London’s Southall, every addition in the family be it a cousin’s cousin all get accommodated in Patiala House. Every new wedding needs the house to expand a little more.

Nikhil Advani, who is directing this film that is being co-produced by Bhushan Kumar of T-Series and Mukesh Talreja, explains, “Our story is universal in spirit as it is a story about all joint families who have a patriarch who makes their decisions and wants to keep everyone under one roof. Kalon family has been living for the last four generations in Southall and he has created his own fiefdom in Patiala House.’’

IN THE WORLD OF FANTASIES: Riteish Deshmukh
Riteish Deshmukh is excited about his magical caper releasing today

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; October 30, 2009)

The first thing you notice about Riteish Deshmukh is that he is wearing a t-shirt with a prominent ‘a’ on it. Clearly the actor is going out of his way to endorse his release today — Aladin directed by Sujoy Ghosh. Making no bones about the fact that he is thrilled to bits about this magic caper which is all heart, the leading man of the film, says, “Sujoy has clearly surpassed my expectations. All of us knew from the start that Aladin would have a magical quality. But, I can tell you that the film may be a fantasy… yet it is truly believable. The SFX are the best ever on Indian screen so far.”
This is the first time he has come out and spoken about a film before the reviews have appeared. The actor believes that it is not only children who will love this part fantasy-part fiction film, it should also appeal to the child in everyone of us. “It has the spirit of a Mr India and it transports you into another world on screen,’’ says Riteish.
Describing Amitabh Bachchan as his most versatile co-star, Riteish says, “When I did Darna Zaroori Hai with him, I told myself, ‘Today I have arrived. I have worked with Indian cinema’s biggest legend.’ Then I got greedy — and as luck would have it, I got the chance to work with Amitji in Aladin. And, if that wasn’t enough, Ram Gopal Varma also gave me the opportunity to work with him in Rann. Just sharing screen space with a man of Amitji’s stature is an indescribable feeling.’’
About his other coactor, the lovely Miss Sri Lanka Jacqueline Fernandez, the actor says, “Jackie is a freshfaced, talented girl who will go places in Bollywood. The two of us have already worked on another mystical romance called Jane Kahaan Se Aayi Hai that is slated for release in 2010. I will be returning back to romantic films with this one.’’
And while he may shed some light on his screen romance, he refuses to lift the veil of mystery surrounding his relationship with actress Genelia. When told that the gossip mills are constantly buzzing about them, he diplomatically replies, “There is so much said about it. The questions haven’t changed nor have my answers. There is nothing to my relationship with Genelia.’’
