Yeh kya ho raha hain? 3 IDIOTS continues to shock the industry. The film, already on a winning spree, is smashing records left, right and centre. As per early indications, the business of the film on Monday was bigger than Saturday. Sources say it’s in Rs. 12 crore range, which means that the film has crossed Rs. 50 crore mark [nett] in barely 4.5 days. Unbelievable, but true!

Ash-Vivek bump into each other
Posted on: December 22, 2009
Aishwarya Rai’s past is suddenly confronting her. After a face-off with Salman Khan on December 17, she bumped into Vivek Oberoi on Saturday at Andheri Sports Complex. Aishwarya and Vivek were there for Mumbai police event titled Jashn 2010-Dhamaka Bollywood Ka.
After Vivek entered the stadium, he was shocked to see the seating arrangement. The LCD screen which was placed at the entrance showed that his seat was right next to Aishwarya’s. An eye-witness said, “Vivek literally froze at the prospect of sitting next to Aishwarya. He simply refused to enter the function.” The organisers then tried very hard and somehow managed to convince him to sit exactly where they wanted.

The eye-witness added, “There was space for one person between Aishwarya and Vivek. Asin was sitting there seconds before Vivek entered. She left that place to perform on stage. Vivek entered when Asin had left her seat.”
And the drama unfolded… As soon as Vivek sat down, Aishwarya took a sneak-peek at him. Our source said, “She became very restless and began fidgeting. Vivek could sense her discomfort. He suddenly turned and looked at her.” To help matters, designer Manish Malhotra who was standing nearby, came rushing in and sat between the two. Sensing the vibes, Vivek left his place in a few minutes and went away.
Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi remained unavailable for comment.
However Manish said, “Yes, I was sitting between Aishwarya and Vivek. But I didn’t rush in. I was already sitting with Asin on my left. Vivek came in after Asin left to perform; it was he who was sitting in Asin’s place, not me.”
Ranbir-Deepika break ice?
Posted on: December 22, 2009
A few days ago, we had carried a story about how Ranbir Kapoor wanted to get back with his ex-girlfriend Deepika Padukone (Mumbai Mirror, December 4, Ranbir wants Deepika back). The opportunity came knocking on Saturday night when the duo was invited to a party hosted by jewellery designer Maheep Kapoor and fashion designer Nandita Mahtani. Although it wasn’t Ranbir who made the first move, those present at the party were successful in getting the estranged couple to talk.
A source present at the party says, “The party which was held after a fashion show, was a star-studded, high-profile bash. Shah Rukh Khan was present with his usual gang of friends, Karan Johar, Arjun Rampal with wife Mehr, costume designer Shabina Khan and Ritesh Deshmukh. Sonam Kapoor (who was once reportedly dating Ranbir) was also present at the party and so was Nandita’s boyfriend Dino Morea. Deepika stuck to her Houseful co-star Ritesh’s side throughout, while Ranbir was seen socialising with everyone. Though aware of the presence of each other, both Ranbir and Deepika avoided eye contact. The cold vibes was sensed by one and all.”
It was evident that the estranged lovebirds were deliberately avoiding each other. The source adds, “To cut the cold vibes, Karan and Shabina took the initiative to get the two talking. Everyone joined hands and kept pushing Ranbir and Deepika close to each other. Eventually their effort and persuasion paid off and the ice began to thaw. It happened when the duo was forced to sit at the same table, next to each other. They began by gradually exchanging smiles and later, a few words. It was just a matter of time till the couple began having a full blown conversation.”
There was a sigh of relief and happiness all around.
We messaged Ranbir and Deepika to confirm the story but both remained unavailable for comment.

Shah Rukh Khan arranges a weekend screening of James Cameron’s Avatar for his children
Last evening Shah Rukh Khan was the special guest at the screening of James Cameron’s, Avatar at a suburban multiplex.
Shah Rukh was so enamoured after watching half the film, that he came out of hall and went up to the studio officials and requested them to organise a special screening for his two children and family members. The officials of the studio immediately assured him that they will do the needful.
A source said, “SRK has always been quite fond of science fiction and superhero films. Even as a child, he would always watch similar kind of films. This is why he immediately agreed to attend the special screening of Avatar.
He was also keen to attend the screening of Avatar at the suburban multiplex as the first theatrical promo of his new film My Name is Khan was scheduled to release during the screening. Everybody knows about SRK’s love for superhero films so much so that he is right now in the process of making Ra.One, which will be directed by Anubhav Sinha. SRK loved Avatar, which is why he also wants his kids to watch it.”
Earlier this month, SRK’s children couldn’t wait to watch Paa and Amitabh Bachchan had sent some extra passes for them on SRK’s request. “Aryan and Suhana love films and they would love to watch Avatar. The kids could not watch it last evening with SRK as they were busy with their school and studies,” added the source.

He requested another screening on Saturday so that he could watch the film again with his family. We will definitely and will decide on the venue and time today.”

Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year had a dull start as it opened to around 30-40% and evening shows did not show major improvement at around 50-55%. Single screens had a low response. The film has fairly low costs so recovery is not a major problem but it remains to be seen what sort of theatrical business it can do. Delhi/NCR showed best improvement yesterday evening but not the sort of jump that makes a big difference.
Paa had a decent first week of around 16.50 crore nett. The film did very well on Saturday and Sunday while midweek collections were steady but on lower side. Second week will be important for the film. Overall the film will probably do 25-30 crore nett lifetime business unless second week is poor.
Radio had a very poor first week of around 1.25 crore nett. DISASTER
De Dana Dan added 10 crore nett in its second weekend. The second week was decent in some circuits but overall the film had a big fall in week two. The film has now grossed 44 crore nett in two weeks.

Vidya Balan is extremely happy with an all around positive response that she has got for her role of an unwed mother in Paa. While keeping her emotions in check and not allowing all the appreciation to make her go overtly gaga, Vidya does admit though that such huge response has come to her four long years after her debut effort Parineeta.
“I guess the wait has been worth it”, says Vidya who plays the mother of a 12 year old kid (played by Amitabh Bachchan) suffering from Progeria in Paa, “I was doing films and by God’s grace most of them were successful as well. However, the kind of respect that is coming the way of everyone associated with Paa is overwhelming, heart warming and above all humbling.”
It is this respect factor that has been the biggest moment for Vidya. When the film’s trial was held a few days back, she was convinced that the film would certainly be remembered for its sincerity, honesty and truthfulness. Though box office factor wasn’t to be ignored, she along with director Balki knew that at the least film would see good respectability coming its way.
“One can’t say much about box office in any case because sometimes even the most quintessential commercial flicks don’t really click with the audiences. However, you instinctively know whether your film has turned out to be a quality outing or not. I remember the days of Lage Raho Munnabhai when we came out of the first screening. Along with Raj Kumar Hirani, I knew that we had made a good film. Same was the case with Paa“, details Vidya.
Now she is eagerly awaiting the box office response for Paa. Given the fact that it is coming a week after De Dana Dan and a week before Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year, Paa has to score and do that really fast.
“I have been told though that the film has been accepted well by the audience and along with critical appreciation, it is also showing good word of mouth from those who have seen it”, she says with that characteristic smile of hers.
What she says does hold good ground. Though the opening wasn’t exceptional (as expected due to its theme), the film has shown a constant increase in crowd inflow with every passing show. Says a trade insider, “The occupancy for Paa on Saturday is almost double than that of Friday. Everyone thought that the film was mainly targeting the class audiences in big cities but it is doing well even in interiors like Nagpur and other cities and towns.”
Meanwhile, Vidya’s phone hasn’t stopped ringing. “Such appreciation is always welcome. Ever since the film’s premiere, there have been congratulatory calls, which is heart warming. I have been literally glued to my cell-phone for last 3 days at stretch and I am certainly not complaining.”
Given the fact that her last film Kismat Konnection (2008) was a success and so was Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), she would be used to such adulation, isn’t it?
“Honestly speaking, there have been good words but such volume of calls is a first”, she confesses, “I remember getting quite a few messages during Bhool Bhulaiyaa or Kismat Konnection. However, so many people actually making an effort and giving me a call reminds me of Parineeta days. Paa has fetched me the best response since my debut film.”
With her much in news Ishqiya round the corner that has an author backed role reserved for her, one waits to see if Vidya gets a further one up over Paa and Parineeta in weeks to come. Starring Naseruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi as the male protagonists, Abhishek Chaubey directed Ishqiya is produced by Vishal Bhardwaj & Raman Maroo and sees a 15th January release.
