Mumbai, Jan 2 (IANS) Director Rajkumar Hirani Saturday produced the credits agreement with author Chetan Bhagat for hit film ’3 Idiots’ and maintained that the movie was not a copy of the bestseller ‘Five Point Someone’.

Hirani distributed copies of an agreement of credit and a non-disclosure agreement signed by Bhagat Sep 1, 2005 and Oct 3, 2007 respectively. Screenplay writer Abhijat Joshi was also present at the media meet.

‘It shall be obligatory on the part of the producer to accord credit to the author in the rolling credits… as under – Based on the novel ‘Five Point Someone’,’ the agreement on the issue of credit states.

The non-disclosure agreement was signed after Hirani gave a ‘four-hour narration’ of the final script to Bhagat, the director said.

Hirani also supported his argument by giving a copy of an interview that Bhagat gave to IANS Sep 26, 2008 titled: ‘I liked the final script of ‘Three Idiots’: Chetan Bhagat.’

‘The director took my book as the base but he has changed it according to his requirements. He took permission from me before taking my story but has not involved me in making it into the final script. But he has shown me the final script and I have liked it too,’ Bhagat had told IANS.

The credit row surfaced after Bhagat had posted on his blog that ’70 percent’ of ’3 Idiots’ is based on his book and therefore he should have got a prominent place in the rolling credits as well as during the film promotion. He also said that he was not shown the final script.

Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra has said that as per their agreement, Bhagat’s name appeared in the rolling credits and he was paid the due amount.

Hirani, who has helmed movies like ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ and ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’, also pointed out that the producer had bought the rights of ‘Five Point Someone’.

Hence, it was their prerogative whether to use ‘five percent of the book or 70 percent of it’.

I want to achieve what Amrish Puriji did in Indian cinema, says Vindoo Dara Singh after the Bigg Boss 3 win

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 27, 2009)

Vindoo Dara Singh won Season 3 of Bigg Boss on Saturday night, richer by Rs 1 crore and, to his surprise, a Chevrolet Cruz (no less).

But also confused because only his little daughter and his brother had come to fetch him from the Bigg Boss  house in Karjat on the outskirts of Mumbai.

“Where are my sister and my parents?” Vindoo kept asking. “But my daughter is here. And I’ve kissed her a thousand times already. God, I’ve missed her so much.

Vindoo Singh beat Poonam Dhillon and Pravesh Rana in Saturday’s finale of Bigg Boss Season 3

Actually I had no friends inside the Bigg Boss house except Ismail Durbar. My first week was my worst week. If it wasn’t for Ismailbhai who supported me initially I’d have never survived in there. He had predicted that I’d win. I kept asking him how he  knew. But he just…knew. I love him for that.”

Vindoo also has fond memories of Raju Shrivastava and Poonam Dhillon from inside the House. “Whatever happened with Raju before he left in nine weeks I still would like to think of him as a friend. He made me laugh. He kept us entertained As for Poonamji in the closing weeks she was a great support. She guided me to the end. I’d like to keep in touch with these three. As for the rest of the housemates I wish them all the best in life.”

As for the ceasesless spats with Pravesh Rana, Vindoo chooses to look at the brighter side. “I saw a tremendous change in him in the last three days. He was actually heard saying he hoped I won. Did I hope to win? No matter what people think I wasn’t working towards winning. I just did what came naturally to me.”

Now that Vindoo is out of Bigg Boss house Vindoo hopes to take his career further. “I’ve a great father(Dara Singh)’s name to live up to. I’m hoping to consolidate my position in the industry. I want to work towards making the position that Amrish Puriji had made in our cinema. Let’s see. This victory has re-charged all my batteries.”

Kareena Kapoor is suffering from food poisoning and has been advised to take rest

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 22, 2009)

Kareena Kapoor is out of action as she is suffering from food poisoning. She also has fever. Kareena felt unwell on Saturday and was resting at home for the last two days. She is feeling better after resting.

Our source said, “Kareena was shooting for an ad film at Mehboob Studios on Saturday afternoon and she had a break for a few days. However, she was feeling unwell during the shoot. She finished shooting anyway and went home. When she met her doctor, he said that she was down with food poisoning and needed rest. Kareena even cancelled her media interactions that she had scheduled for Sunday afternoon. She normally follows a very healthy diet, but she must have definitely eaten something that didn’t agree with her. She is recuperating now that she is under medication.”

Kareena said, “Yes, I am down with food poisoning. My doctor has advised me to take rest and that’s what I have been doing since the past two days, but I am getting better and looking forward to my film’s release.”

Aishwarya and Vivek get into a tricky spot at an event; Manish Malhotra sorts things out

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 21, 2009)

Aishwarya Rai’s past is suddenly confronting her. After a face-off with Salman Khan on December 17, she bumped into Vivek Oberoi on Saturday at Andheri Sports Complex. Aishwarya and Vivek were there for Mumbai police event titled Jashn 2010-Dhamaka Bollywood Ka.

After Vivek entered the stadium, he was shocked to see the seating arrangement. The LCD screen which was placed at the entrance showed that his seat was right next to Aishwarya’s.  An eye-witness said, “Vivek literally froze at the prospect of sitting next to Aishwarya. He simply refused to enter the function.” The organisers then tried very hard and somehow managed to convince him to sit exactly where they wanted.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Manish Malhotra and Vivek Oberoi at the event

The eye-witness added, “There was space for one person between Aishwarya and Vivek. Asin was sitting there seconds before Vivek entered. She left that place to perform on stage. Vivek entered when Asin had left her seat.”

And the drama unfolded… As soon as Vivek sat down, Aishwarya took a sneak-peek at him. Our source said, “She became very restless and began fidgeting. Vivek could sense her discomfort. He suddenly turned and looked at her.” To help matters, designer Manish Malhotra who was standing nearby, came rushing in and sat between the two. Sensing the vibes, Vivek left his place in a few minutes and went away.

Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi remained unavailable for comment.

However Manish said, “Yes, I was sitting between Aishwarya and Vivek. But I didn’t rush in. I was already sitting with Asin on my left. Vivek came in after Asin left to perform; it was he who was sitting in Asin’s place, not me.”

Estranged lovebirds, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, who were not on talking terms, broke the ice at a party held on Saturday

By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 21, 2009)

A few days ago, we had carried a story about how Ranbir Kapoor wanted to get back with his ex-girlfriend Deepika Padukone (Mumbai Mirror, December 4, Ranbir wants Deepika back). The opportunity came knocking on Saturday night when the duo was invited to a party hosted by jewellery designer Maheep Kapoor and fashion designer Nandita Mahtani. Although it wasn’t Ranbir who made the first move, those present at the party were successful in getting the estranged couple to talk.

A source present at the party says, “The party which was held after a fashion show, was a star-studded, high-profile bash. Shah Rukh Khan was present with his usual gang of friends, Karan Johar, Arjun Rampal with wife Mehr, costume designer Shabina Khan and Ritesh Deshmukh. Sonam Kapoor (who was once reportedly dating Ranbir) was also present at the party and so was Nandita’s boyfriend Dino Morea. Deepika stuck to her Houseful co-star Ritesh’s side throughout, while Ranbir was seen socialising with everyone. Though aware of the presence of each other, both Ranbir and Deepika avoided eye contact. The cold vibes was sensed by one and all.”

It was evident that the estranged lovebirds were deliberately avoiding each other. The source adds, “To cut the cold vibes, Karan and Shabina took the initiative to get the two talking. Everyone joined hands and kept pushing Ranbir and Deepika close to each other. Eventually their effort and persuasion paid off and the ice began to thaw.  It happened when the duo was forced to sit at the same table, next to each other. They began by gradually exchanging smiles and later, a few words. It was just a matter of time till the couple began having a full blown conversation.”

There was a sigh of relief and happiness all around.

We messaged Ranbir and Deepika to confirm the story but both remained unavailable for comment.

Shah Rukh Khan arranges a weekend screening of James Cameron’s Avatar for his children

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 16, 2009)

Last evening Shah Rukh Khan was the special guest at the screening of James Cameron’s, Avatar at a suburban multiplex.
Shah Rukh was so enamoured after watching half the film, that he came out of hall and went up to the studio officials and requested them to organise a special screening for his two children and family members. The officials of the studio immediately assured him that they will do the needful.

A source said, “SRK has always been quite fond of science fiction and superhero films. Even as a child, he would always watch similar kind of films. This is why he immediately agreed to attend the special screening of Avatar.

He was also keen to attend the screening of Avatar at the suburban multiplex as the first theatrical promo of his new film My Name is Khan was scheduled to release during the screening. Everybody knows about SRK’s love for superhero films so much so that he is right now in the process of making Ra.One, which will be directed by Anubhav Sinha. SRK loved Avatar, which is why he also wants his kids to watch it.”

Earlier this month, SRK’s children couldn’t wait to watch Paa and Amitabh Bachchan had sent some extra passes for them on SRK’s request. “Aryan and Suhana love films and they would love to watch Avatar. The kids could not watch it last evening with SRK as they were busy with their school and studies,” added the source.

Vijay Singh, Indian CEO of the company which produced Avatar, confirmed the news and said, “Shah Rukh was very excited about Avatar and the scale on which it was made. He requested another screening on Saturday so that he could watch the film again with his family. We will definitely and will decide on the venue and time today.”

Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year had a dull start as it opened to around 30-40% and evening shows did not show major improvement at around 50-55%. Single screens had a low response. The film has fairly low costs so recovery is not a major problem but it remains to be seen what sort of theatrical business it can do. Delhi/NCR showed best improvement yesterday evening but not the sort of jump that makes a big difference.

Paa had a decent first week of around 16.50 crore nett. The film did very well on Saturday and Sunday while midweek collections were steady but on lower side. Second week will be important for the film. Overall the film will probably do 25-30 crore nett lifetime business unless second week is poor.

Radio had a very poor first week of around 1.25 crore nett. DISASTER

De Dana Dan added 10 crore nett in its second weekend. The second week was decent in some circuits but overall the film had a big fall in week two. The film has now grossed 44 crore nett in two weeks.

Vidya Balan Vidya Balan is extremely happy with an all around positive response that she has got for her role of an unwed mother in Paa. While keeping her emotions in check and not allowing all the appreciation to make her go overtly gaga, Vidya does admit though that such huge response has come to her four long years after her debut effort Parineeta.

“I guess the wait has been worth it”, says Vidya who plays the mother of a 12 year old kid (played by Amitabh Bachchan) suffering from Progeria in Paa, “I was doing films and by God’s grace most of them were successful as well. However, the kind of respect that is coming the way of everyone associated with Paa is overwhelming, heart warming and above all humbling.”

It is this respect factor that has been the biggest moment for Vidya. When the film’s trial was held a few days back, she was convinced that the film would certainly be remembered for its sincerity, honesty and truthfulness. Though box office factor wasn’t to be ignored, she along with director Balki knew that at the least film would see good respectability coming its way.

“One can’t say much about box office in any case because sometimes even the most quintessential commercial flicks don’t really click with the audiences. However, you instinctively know whether your film has turned out to be a quality outing or not. I remember the days of Lage Raho Munnabhai when we came out of the first screening. Along with Raj Kumar Hirani, I knew that we had made a good film. Same was the case with Paa“, details Vidya.

Now she is eagerly awaiting the box office response for Paa. Given the fact that it is coming a week after De Dana Dan and a week before Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year, Paa has to score and do that really fast.

“I have been told though that the film has been accepted well by the audience and along with critical appreciation, it is also showing good word of mouth from those who have seen it”, she says with that characteristic smile of hers.

What she says does hold good ground. Though the opening wasn’t exceptional (as expected due to its theme), the film has shown a constant increase in crowd inflow with every passing show. Says a trade insider, “The occupancy for Paa on Saturday is almost double than that of Friday. Everyone thought that the film was mainly targeting the class audiences in big cities but it is doing well even in interiors like Nagpur and other cities and towns.”

Vidya Balan Meanwhile, Vidya’s phone hasn’t stopped ringing. “Such appreciation is always welcome. Ever since the film’s premiere, there have been congratulatory calls, which is heart warming. I have been literally glued to my cell-phone for last 3 days at stretch and I am certainly not complaining.”

Given the fact that her last film Kismat Konnection (2008) was a success and so was Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), she would be used to such adulation, isn’t it?

“Honestly speaking, there have been good words but such volume of calls is a first”, she confesses, “I remember getting quite a few messages during Bhool Bhulaiyaa or Kismat Konnection. However, so many people actually making an effort and giving me a call reminds me of Parineeta days. Paa has fetched me the best response since my debut film.”

With her much in news Ishqiya round the corner that has an author backed role reserved for her, one waits to see if Vidya gets a further one up over Paa and Parineeta in weeks to come. Starring Naseruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi as the male protagonists, Abhishek Chaubey directed Ishqiya is produced by Vishal Bhardwaj & Raman Maroo and sees a 15th January release.
