Pratik, who chooses not to use his parents’ surname, Patil or Babbar, (that’s how his maternal grandmother wants it),
By Meena Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 25, 2009)
On Sunday night, the Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na scene-stealer created a flutter when he appeared as the showstopper for designer Kunal Rawal at the Fashion Week. Mumbai Mirror caught up with the young actor for an exclusive chat.Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghat is your next release?
Yes, the movie is complete but it will release sometime next year. Kiran recently had a traumatic incident (a miscarriage) and at present things are on hold. I guess the film should come around July next year. The experience of working with Aamir Khan was great.

You’ve also been signed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali?
Yes. The film should start in December.

There’s an element of mystery around you. You are hardly seen?
Even I keep thinking about it. I’m wondering if everyone is all over the place, why am I not there. If everyone is running a rat race, I keep asking myself why I am not doing the same. Anyway, I’m happy I walked the ramp. Kunal Rawal is a friend. When he broached the subject of me walking the ramp, I was hesitant. Now I’m happy we nailed it.

Post Jaane Tu… Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza created quite a stir. What happened to you?
I retreated into my shell for some reason. Then I got around to reading scripts. Out of 10, I found five exciting, five awful. If the first 10 pages  don’t excite me, then I can’t read further. I’m a passion-driven guy. I’d love to play super-hero in a film.

Currently, what is a normal day in your life like?
I wake up at 6am and hit the gym by 7am. I like exercising because I’m excited about the results. I like the way my body looks now. When I get home, I shower and eat my head off. Then it is two hours of Hindi lessons from my tutor, Prakash Bhardwaj. After that it is two hours of yoga. At 9pm, I’m pooped and don’t want to do anything more.

Would you like to do theatre?  Your sister Juhi is into theatre.
I love the stage. I do follow the work Juhi does.

Do you meet Juhi and Arya often?
No. I only go there when my dad (Raj Babbar) is in town. He is hardly in Mumbai these days. As I said earlier, my days are so packed. I don’t get a chance to do much else.

Surprising, because once upon a time you were  a party animal.
For a year, I partied hard. I would stay out of the house for 4-5 days in a row and would not take calls. And my aunt (Manya Patil) and my grandmother would be exasperated. They were like, ‘what are you up to, kid?’ Now I hate going out. In Mumbai, every place is so crowded. At a nightclub, you have to hold your drink in the air and try squeezing your way around. There are people sticking to you from all sides. Sometimes it gets terrible.

What is the weirdest rumour you heard about yourself recently?
Ha, I read somewhere that I was dating an 18-year-old girl from South Mumbai. I don’t know any 18-year-old girls. I have to find out the girl I’m supposed to be dating.

And what is your latest indulgence?
My latest buy and passion is my silver (C-class) Mercedes. It has black interiors. Ideally I’d have liked a black Merc. But a black one comes with beige interiors. Beige feels old.  On second thoughts, I should have got myself an Audi A-4.

Bobby Darling’s brief but stimulating interlude with cricketer Munaf Patel in a Delhi hotel has led to heartbreak. The cricketer refuses to return his phone calls
By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 25, 2009)

Munaf  Patel

Usually when one is heart broken one tends to go into a shell resisting all attempts to be humoured. But not if you are Bobby Darling. Bobby, who has never been known to hide his emotions and, in fact, can be quite garrulous, is now rather melodramatically claiming from the rooftop that his heart is broken.

The breaker of his heart is none other than the 27-year-old burly cricketer Munaf Patel.

The lanky Munaf, who comes from the dusty town of Ikhar near Bharuch, shot into the spotlight in 2003 when he was projected as a scorching tearpart by former Australia pacer Denis Lillee. After a dream Test debut against England in 2006, where he picked five wickets at Nagpur, Munaf has fallen out of favour with the national selectors after a steady dip in his performances.

Bobby and Munaf met in Delhi at a nightclub. They were introduced by a common friend. Soon they started talking. A few minutes into the conversation and they were like a house on fire. Bobby then had a few drinks.

Bobby says, “A few hours later, he came to the hotel where I had checked in. He was very nice and sweet to me. We got along fabulously.” Bobby even showed this reporter the messages the two had exchanged.

The lovers’ tiff gets stranger with Munaf completely refuting the story saying “I did meet Bobby Darling in a nightclub in Delhi, He met me in presence of cricketers Ishant Sharma, Sarandeep Singh and Amit Sharma. But I didn’t go to the hotel where he was staying. Agar mujhe famous hona hota toh main koi actress se dosti kar leta. Woh film line apni line nahin hai. Kaisi dosti yaari? Moreover, Bobby Darling is so much older than me.”

Hardly had Munaf told us this then Bobby called and wailed, “Munaf just called me up and shouted at me that I have told you everything.”

Evidently after the interlude at the hotel Bobby and Munaf had kept in touch through SMSes but later Munaf stopped responding to Bobby’s messages or taking his calls.

Bobby is now pining for Munaf who has seemingly dumped him. ‘I am very depressed,” he exclaims, adding, ‘Munaf should put himself in my position, only then will he know what it feels like to be jilted.”

After a self-imposed house arrest to prepare for his next film, Farhan Akhtar was so depressed that he took two months to recover
By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 22, 2009)

Farhan Akhtar recently took his love for method acting too far. So involved was he with his role in his forthcoming film, Karthik Calling Karthik that he took two long months to get back to his normal self.

The story goes that for his next film, Karthik Calling Karthik, in which he plays a super intense character, Farhan locked himself in his house and refused to meet or interact with anyone to prepare for his role. He did this continuously for eight days. Farhan didn’t even spare his immediate family during the eight days that he had locked himself up. He would hardly interact with them.

The actor also stopped his daily work out altogether as he plays the boy-next-door, which requires him to look very unlike a hero.

After preparing for eight days, Farhan shot for the film start to finish, which took a toll on him. The immediate aftereffect of the self-imposed arrest was that he withdrew into a shell and didn’t have a social life for a long time.

When Farhan realised that he had taken the love for acting too far, he started getting back to his normal routine by first taking a two-week long holiday overseas. After he came back about a month ago, the first thing he did was hit the gym as he was sorely missing his work out sessions. Exercising daily also made him feel good and he gradually got back his confidence, which he had lost because of getting under the skin of the character.

Farhan is still in the process of reclaiming his life and he makes sure that he meets his old friends regularly and also has begun getting back to his busy work schedule, slowly but surely.
