Mumbai: Andheri resident Rupa Asher is not having a very happy new year for she has been receiving more lewd text messages and blank calls than good wishes. The distraught housewife didn’t know why she was getting calls from random numbers in the middle of the night asking for “Sophia’’ till one caller told her that it was the number of a sexy Neha Dhupia in the film Raat Gayi Baat Gayi.
The calls haven’t stopped and continue to increase in frequency as the movie goes into its first week. While some callers indulge in obscene talk and ask for favours, others call and disconnect at odd times. A distressed Rupa’s husband Sanjeev, who hasn’t seen the movie, logged on to YouTube to check whether the number was actually being flashed in the movie.
“The number has been distinctly repeated in the film and the makers can easily mute it,’’ he says.
When Asher approached the producers, Pritish Nandy Communications, she says she was asked to change the number or wait for a little while till the film stopped screening in movie halls. Director Saurabh Shukla, who is in Kerala, didn’t know about the case but lead actor Rajat Kapoor said he had apologised to the family for the inconvenience caused because of negligence by the film crew. “A police complaint should be registered not against the film but the people who are making the lewd calls,’’ says Kapoor who thinks that filmmakers often miss out on small details like this.
The Ashers, who are not looking for monetary compensation, just want the producers to put out a public apology and ask people to stop calling the number, saying that it belongs to a real subscriber and not to Neha Dhupia. They want the nuisance to stop as handling 30 calls and 5 SMSes per day has become traumatic for them.
Earlier too, Dr Surekha Verma, a resident of Kanjurmarg, was the target of calls from unknown numbers when her number was tattooed on Aamir Khan’s arms in the film Ghajini.
