Vidya Balan to stick to what suits her best in No One killed Jessica – ethnic wear by her favourite Sabyasachi

By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 22, 2010)

After getting flak for her dressing sense in her earlier movies, Vidya Balan has become extremely conscious of her clothes. She is finally happy that she has been appreciated for her outfits in Paa and Ishqiya, thanks to designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

So it’s not surprising that Sabyasachi has become her favourite designer. Lately, she insisted that she will only work with him in No One killed Jessica, directed by Rajkumar Gupta.

The other lesson she has also learnt in the recent past is that she should stick to Indian outfits that she is comfortable in, rather than experiment with the Western look.

VidyaBalan Sabyasachi Mukherjee

A source from the unit reveals, “Vidya categorically told Gupta that she needs Sabya on board for her clothes. As she is accepted and appreciated for her Indian wear, she will once again be seen in similar costumes in this film. At best, the actress will wear denims paired with tunics and kurtis. Her role does not demand a Western look and thus she will stick to Indian wear.”

Apart from movies, Vidya has also been dressing for events in Sabya creations. “She carries it off really well and has been garnering major compliments for the same,” the source added.

Impressed by their work in Marathi film Natrang, Sanjay Leela Bhansali signs up music directors Ajay and Atul for Chenab Gandhi

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 22, 2010)

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his sharp music sense. He first discovered Ismail Darbar and as a team, they gave two blockbusters with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas. His risk paid off, and the music was a huge hit.

Now, Bhansali is set introduce music director duo Ajay and Atul in Bollywood. They have just delivered a superhit Marathi film Natrang.

Ajay and Atul

Our source said, “Someone suggested their names to Bhansali, who heard their music and loved it. He met up with them and immediately signed them for his upcoming film Chenab Gandhi, which stars Amitabh Bachchan, Rajeev Khandelwal and Vidya Balan in lead roles.

Bhansali was very impressed by the music they had created for the Atul Kulkarni and Sonali Kulkarni-starrer Natrang.

The film created a buzz not only for its performances, it got some rave reviews for its music as well.”

Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif met accidentally, and the tension in the air could be cut with a knife

By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 22, 2010)

// // // What happens when Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘close friend’ Katrina Kaif bumps into his ex-flame Deepika Padukone? It happened at a shoot recently and both girls exchanged cold stares before Katrina walked out, with her nose in the air. Needless to say, acknowledging each other was not on their agenda.

It may be recalled that Ranbir Kapoor became really close friends with Katrina Kaif while he was dating Deepika.

On Wednesday, Deepika was doing a magazine photo shoot in the open area of Mehboob Studio. An eyewitness reveals, “Deepika had come with Farhan Akhtar for her photo shoot. Somewhere around late afternoon, Deepika was giving her solo shots in the garden area of the studio. While Deepika was doing her last minute touch-up, there was pin drop silence and all eyes swivelled to the entrance. It was Katrina Kaif, who had accidentally walked in, thinking it was the venue where she was called for her shoot.”

The eyewitness continues, “Dressed in a short white skirt and a pink tee, Katrina walked in and froze for a second. Deepika, who was standing some distance away, saw her. Both had a few seconds of eye contact, and Katrina immediately took a U-turn and walked away.”

It’s hardly surprising given their history. A source says, “Although Ranbir and Deepika are not seeing each other any more, the latter still has issues with Katrina. It was the growing friendship between Katrina and Ranbir which marked an end to her relationship.”

Both Katrina and Deepika did not reply to our message till the time of going to press.

How Himesh Reshammiya’s obsession with Mann ka Radio drove his hapless neighbours up the wall for many nights

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 22, 2010)

We all may have a bit of narcissism in us, but when it threatens to become a social nuisance, it’s no longer funny.

Singer-turned-actor Himesh Reshammiya had neighbours in his building, Oberoi Sky Heights at Lokhandwala, almost begging for mercy when he started playing songs from his flop film Radio right through the night at full volume.

Apparently just a few days before Radio released, Himesh, who stays on the 35th floor of B-Wing of Oberoi Sky Heights, would play the songs of the film from midnight to the early hours of the morning, on an everyday basis.

Worse, he would play the same song – Mann ka radio bajne de zara – irritating he neighbours even further. The brunt of the noise pollution was borne by the Jain family, which stays just below him on the 34th floor. Says a source from the building, “At times, we were not able to comprehend if Himesh was playing the song or singing it himself. He would sometimes play another song from the same film – as loudly – in the afternoon as well.”

After putting up with it for a few days, Mrs Jain and some of her friends who live in the same building, thought of writing an official letter of complaint, but later decided to just have a word with the building-in-charge instead.

1. Himesh’s flat
2. Jains residence

But Himesh reportedly continued with his obsession of loudly playing Radio songs, much to the chagrin of the helpless neighbours. While Himesh denied the allegation, Mrs Mrs Jain told Mumbai Mirror, “The music coming from Himesh’s flat in the night was very disturbing.” Actor Sahil Khan, who stays on the 33rd floor also confirmed, “I heard there was a problem between the Jains and Himesh because of the loud music from Himesh’s flat.”

The midnight drama continued until Radio hit the theatres and sank. That must have awakened Himesh to the fact that perhaps people didn’t like the film and its music as much as he thought they would. A stunned silence ensued and Reshammiya’s neighbours finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Katrina Kaif

The news that has been doing the rounds for sometime now is about the search for the heroine of Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder’s flick Tees Maar Khan. The film has been in news since its announcement. First it was Akshay replacing SRK as the lead, followed by the ‘namesake’ casting coup, wherein Akshaye Khanna was roped in for the film.

As far as the heroine for the film was concerned, the rumor mills went overboard with names that ranged from Sonam Kapoor to Deepika Padukone and likes. But, according to Bollywood Hungama’s confirmed sources it is neither Sonam, nor Deepika, because it is Katrina Kaif! When we spoke to Shirish to confirm the news, all that he said was, “I cannot say anything right now. I can only speak about it in a couple of days.” Our source also went onto add that the trio of Akshay, Katrina and Farah have shot a cover page shoot for a daily (which is supposed to be out in a couple of days) to announce the coming on board of Katrina as Tees Maar Khan’s leading lady.

With Katrina coming on board, expectations are bound to be sky-high about Tees Maar Khan, considering the hit track record that Akki-Katz have delivered in the past, like Namastey London, Welcome and Singh Is Kinng to name a few. What remains to be seen is that will Tees Maar Khan follow suit or will it create a new track record?

Vinod Chopra’s entourage cordons off a major public road in Bandra to let the producer into a bylane

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 21, 2010)

Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s trip to St Paul’s Road in Bandra caused a traffic jam during rush hour. At around 6pm  on January 18, his security guards blocked the entire road; barring all vehicles and pedestrians from using St Paul’s Road for about 10-12 minutes. Vidhu made a grand entry from the other side, which is a no entry and then drove into a bylane.

A reputed director, who happened to be there at the same time said, “Roads are usually blocked for politicians and that too by cops. Now, roads are being blocked for filmmakers as well. It was shocking. Some private security guards simply blocked the traffic from the other side of St Paul’s Road, which is a one way road. Ten minutes later, Vidhu Vinod Chopra drove along on the wrong side of the one way and only after that was the traffic allowed to ply.”

Didn’t the traffic police object? The director replied, “Normally there are traffic cops but on at day, there were none.”

Vidhu Vinod Chopra remained unavailable for comment. But we wonder, has he forgotten his Munnabhai Gandhigiri lesson?

Buzz is that Priyanka Chopra has lost out on Abbas Mustan’s remake of The Italian Job only because she bowed out of Rohan Sippy’s film starring Abhishek Bachchan

By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 20, 2010)

Abbas Mustan almost managed a casting coup, as Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra were to share the same frame in their remake of The Italian Job. But we now hear that Priyanka has lost out on the role.

Buzz is that it is a consequence of the actress opting out of Rohan Sippy’s new film, starring Abhishek. Priyanka thought she would be cast opposite Abhishek, but ended up with South star Rana Daggubati instead. So, that’s when the actress decided to make an exit.

// // // Perhaps Bachchan Jr, who is also part of the Italian Job, is not too pleased with her decision? Whatever the reason, Priyanka has lost out on The Italian Job remake as well.

A source says, “Priyanka was keen to work in Rohan Sippy’s film. They had worked together in Bluffmaster and wanted to be paired with him again, but it turned out to be a role with South star Rana Daggubati. So she chose to opt out, citing date problems. Rohan was aghast and grumbled about her to his friend Abhishek. This, in turn, upset Abhishek. Apparently, the actress chose to instead work in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Ek Bataa Saat.”

This incident was the last straw in the Abhishek-Priyanka relationship, which was already distressed. The source adds, “The cracks started developing in the Abhishek-Priyanka relationship over the last year. It all started with a tiff they had backstage over a performance. Then, Aishwarya Rai was miffed with Priyanka over a remark made by her on stage while accepting an award at a function. Since then, things have turned sour between the two. However, the final nail in the coffin was her backing out of the Rohan project, upsetting Abhishek to no end.”

Priyanka Chopra Abhishek Bachchan

The Italian Job stars Abhishek Bachchan, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Kunal Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna. Commenting on the star cast, the source says, “Abbas Mustan’s Italian Job is a huge film. The film’s casting has been in process since a long time. To avoid further issues, the makers have officially announced only Katrina Kaif’s name as of now. They are now considering Preity Zinta to replace Priyanka. Preity will make her comeback with this film in a completely new and sexy avatar.”

Priyanka’s manager was noncommittal. He says, “Nothing has been finalised with regards to The Italian Job. She has only signed Vishal Bhardwaj’s film at the moment. As for Rohan’s film, Priyanka has not even heard the script, so how can she opt out of the film?”

Anushka Sharma gets to kiss Shahid Kapoor thrice in their film together. Funnily, the former was not jumping for joy at the prospect

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 20, 2010)

Apparently Anushka Sharma has locked lips with Shahid Kapoor not once, but thrice for her forthcoming YRF film, directed by actor-turned-director Parmeet Sethi. While most girls would happily kiss the young star, she wasn’t turning cartwheels at the idea. A source says, “The kisses are not the brush-of-the-lips type. They are full-on smooches.”

Reportedly, Anushka shared great chemistry with Shahid when they were shooting for this film in the States. They had gelled very well and seemed to be enjoying each other’s company very much. And we don’t blame YRF or Parmeet Sethi if they decided on the three smooches because they wanted to exploit that chemistry and have it translated on screen as well.

But Anushka was not comfortable. “Parmeet had to do a lot of cajoling. Finally, he managed to convince her,” our source said.

What about Shahid? Was he okay with kissing Anushka? “Oh, he had no problem,” our source revealed.

As on date, the entire shooting of the film has been completed. The film is in the editing stages. Let’s hope that all the three smooches go unedited in the final print.

Ram Gopal Varma to make Company 2; Daya Nayak to help him write the script

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 19, 2010)

// // //

Ram Gopal Varma

Ram Gopal Varma is set to make the sequel of his film Company. The film will be based on the encounter specialist cops who are going through trials in recent times.

The stories of cops like Pradeep Sharma and Daya Nayak provide good fodder for scripts. Daya Nayak, who shares a warm relationship with the director, is helping Ramu with the script of Company 2 as well.

Our source said, “Ramu is making the film on the encounter squad which has now been disbanded. The film deals with cops who rise to the occasion to save the day, but become victims of that very same system. The film will talk about the conditions that compel cops to get involved in encounters and how finally they become victims of their actions. Daya Nayak, who helped Ramu in making Ab Tak Chappan, is pitching in for the script of the sequel.

The film will deal with the drama within the encounter squad like jealousy, ambition and back stabbing. Ramu will make the film on the complexities of the police world. The issue of the encounter cops will only form a small part of the film.

Daya Nayak

It would largely deal with the internal problems between the various departments and more so, with the problems between the people of the same department.”

Ramu confirmed that he is indeed making Company 2. However, he did not comment on Daya Nayak helping him with the script.

Despite Anushka Sharma’s clarifications that she is no longer controlled by Yash Raj films, rumour has it that Aditya Chopra still keeps an eye on her moves

By Meena Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 19, 2010)

When Anushka Sharma green-lighted Nikhil Advani’s Patiala House opposite Akshay Kumar, the trade thought she had flown the coop. It was assumed that she was no longer controlled by Aditya Chopra, her mentor.

But reliable trade sources say that Adi still takes an active interest in his protégée’s career.

Both Tarika Singh, who looks after Anushka’s media relations and endorsement work, and John, who looks after her film interests, have been appointed by Yash Raj. Both these managers are reportedly expected to get the approval of Yash Raj (preferably Adi’s) before they say yes to any film.

Anushka has clearly maintained that she is eternally grateful to Adi for launching her in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. While she has categorically stated that she is too professional to give away the script of an outside banner to Adi before she approves of it, Anushka is happy that her godfather continues to take an active interest in her career. She has said, “I know if I ever want any career advice, Adi sir will always be there for me.”

Grapevine now has it that after her second assignment for Yash Raj, directed by Parmeet Sethi, the Rab Ne… girl will be contractually left with one more film for the banner that introduced her to Bollywood. However, she is free to sign any outside film, like in the case of Patiala House, but the project must be approved by Yash Raj.

This is the first time in Bollywood history that a parent company is taking such a keen interest in its ward. There have been past instances of producers who have introduced stars asking for a commission from their discoveries.  However, there has not been any instance of a director personally appointing staff for his protegee. And, making sure she makes the right career moves.
