Amitabh Bachchan’s flawless performance in Paa has resulted in an international version of the film, which will be released soon

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 07, 2009)

The overwhelming response to Amitabh Bachchan’s performance in Paa has triggered off a whole new chain of thought processes among those who are involved with the project. It is now felt that the film’s theme of age-acceleration by progeria and its muted dramatic depiction through Amitabh’s performance as Auro deserves a global platform. Consequently, an international version of Paa is now being put together.

Paa director R Balki says, “The version for a non-Indian audience will have to be edited very differently but the connectivity with Auro’s character will remain unchanged.” A lot of Abhishek’s character’s activities as a young politician will have to be edited for the international version. However, without those scenes Abhishek’s role will become shadowy. What will remain is the central conflict involving the progeric child’s search for his biological father.

The theme of progeria is obviously a huge incentive to market the film internationally. Balki reveals, “I have a friend in the US who drove down 70 miles to a theatre in Miami to see Paa yesterday and the hall was packed. But let me tell you, I’m not the first filmmaker to tackle the subject. I thought I was embarking on a revolutionary mission by making a film on progeria but when I checked on the net I discovered there were nearly 40 films on progeria across the world.”

Balki saw all of the films based on the same subject in order to bring out a new side to the subject. He adds, “I wanted to make sure Paa had nothing in common with the other films. Now, when we do an international version we’ll ensure the audience abroad would never have seen anything like Paa.”

It isn’t decided as yet whether the international version of Paa will be dubbed in the English language or the spoken language will remain Hindi with English subtitles.

NOT KEEPING MUM: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Aishwarya laughs off Bollywood rumours

SUBHASH K JHA Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; December 3, 2009)

Bollywood rumours, once again, of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan being pregnant were delightfully laughed away by the Bachchan bahu. “I think it was triggered off by that ad with Abhishek and me,” she said. The ad has the couple saying, “Ek khush khabri hai…” Ash added, “That’s where the talk must have started. But there’s no truth to it.”

So, that puts paid to the buzz about her walking out on Abhinay Deo’s Crooked, in which she teams up again with Abhishek, and also stories of her aim being to complete Vipul Shah’s Action Replayy, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish, Mani’s Raavan and Rajnikant’s The Robot as early as possible.

Said a friend, “Ash does not get time for herself. She is trying to balance various projects, some of which have overshot the deadline, while playing her domestic roles properly. It’s a very tough balancing act, she needs a break.”

Understandably, the actress is now dropping out of projects that haven’t started. The buzz is she might not play Mumtaz Mahal to Ben Kingsley’s in Taj Mahal, a project that she had said yes to while shooting The Last Legion with Sir Ben.
Katrina hobnobbed all night with Shah Rukh, Shilpa Shetty couldn’t stop showing off her engagement ring and Gauri Khan danced enthusiastically till the cops came in and repeatedly asked host Hrithik to stop the loud music late on Sunday night

A near stampede resulted outside Hrithik Roshan’s building Palazzio, Juhu late on Sunday night when Hrithik threw a party to celebrate his wife Sussanne’s birthday. The who’s who of Bollywood attended the do and a throng of fans stood outside the gate to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars.

Guests at the party included Shah Rukh-Gauri Khan, Saif-Kareena, Katrina Kaif, Karan Johar, Parmeshwar Godrej, Tusshar Kapoor, Arjun Rampal-Mehr Jesia, Chunky-Bhavna Pandey, Shilpa Shetty-Raj Kundra, Zayed Khan, Kajal Anand, Neelam, Kunal Kapoor, Vicky-Gayatri Oberoi, Sonali-Goldie Behl and Farah Ali Khan, amongst others.

Ritesh Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza came in together, as did Dino Morea and his now on-now off girlfriend, designer Nandita Mahtani. While Gauri Khan was having a great time dancing, Shah Rukh, who came in an hour after her, was in a rather sober mood. Parmeshwar Godrej was in high spirits and was one of the last guests to leave the party.

Hrithik looked dapper, as usual, in a black shirt and blue jeans, while Sussanne complemented his attire with an elegant black dress.

Incidentally, Hrithik’s favourite co-star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan did not attend the party. A source close to the Roshans said, “Abhishek was busy shooting, hence Aishwarya decided not to come.”

Hrithik’s good friend Priyanka Chopra was also absent. The actress’s official spokesperson said, “Priyanka could not attend Hrithik’s party because she wasn’t feeling too well due to food poisoning.”

Unlike most parties where Ameesha is usually accompanied by her boyfriend Kanav Puri, this time she came alone and looked quite lost.

A rather plump looking Katrina Kaif managed to raise quite a few eyebrows by hobnobbing with boyfriend Salman Khan’s arch rival Shah Rukh Khan. A close friend of Salman said, “Never before have we seen Katrina get along so well with Shah Rukh. Has she broken up with Salman?”

When we asked why Hrithik’s sister Sunaina did not attend the party, the source said, “Sunaina is a loner.”

Since Shilpa got engaged to Raj on Saturday night, everybody wanted to have a look at her huge ring. “Shilpa proudly showed it to almost everybody who was around. She was the centre of attraction all evening,” added the source.

The revelry ended on an unpleasant note when an irate neighbour complained about the loud music reverberating from the building’s 10th floor where the party was on in full swing. A few cops reached the venue but failed to take stock of the situation. They had to call senior police inspector Sawant who asked Hrithik to mellow down.

Priyanka Chopra is still recovering from the shock and anger of being publically humiliated by Ashutosh Gowariker (pictured left), director of her next film “What’s Your Rashee?”, at the IIFA Awards on June 13, 2009.

After Priyanka collected her award as the Best Actress for “Fashion”, it was Ashu’s turn to go on stage to receive his Best Director award for “Jodhaa Akbar”.

The first thing that he uttered after taking the mike was, “Priyanka, I love you, but I don’t know how you got the award for Best Actress when Aishwarya was also nominated in the same category for ‘Jodhaa Akbar’.”

As if that wasn’t bad enough, he further added, “Maybe it is because you are very hard-working and she is a natural.”

But when he realised that he was goofing up, he put the blame on Jaya Bachchan, who was standing next to him, and said, “Jayaji was just asking me the same thing.”

Priyanka, understandably, was furious, but maintained a calm and dignified front.

However, she skipped the after-party in Abhishek and Aishwarya’s suite and reportedly said, “I don’t want to go there and see his face.”

We wonder what made Ashu say what he did? Was he trying to impress the Bachchans on their home ground, IIFA awards? Considering Priyanka has won the Best Actress award for “Fashion” at every award show this year, how come Ashu suddenly wake up to realise Ash was more deserving?

By the way, Priyanka was not the only one whom he upset at IIFA awards. Apparently, he even had a confrontation with the hosts of the evening – actors Boman Irani and Riteish Deshmukh.

He is said to have blasted them for making fun of his film.

According to sources from IIFA, Riteish and Boman presented a skit spoofing all the movies nominated in the Best Film category, which included “Race”, “Dostana”, “Rock On”, “Ghajini”, “Jodhaa Akbar” and “A Wednesday”.

For the “Jodhaa Akbar” act, Boman played Akbar while a starlet played Jodhaa. Riteish walked in dressed as Amitabh Bachchan in “Shahenshah”. When Boman asked Riteish who he was, the latter replied, “Rishte mein hum tumhare baap lagte hai, lekin naam hai Shahenshah,” to which Boman said, “Tum Shahenshah toh main kaun hoon?”

It was an inoffensive statement, but it angered Ashu to no limit. He walked out from the audience and went straight to the green room. There he lectured Riteish and Boman about poking fun at others. He also asked Riteish and Boman why SRK and Bachchans were not made fun of (Though Abhishek’s movie “Drona” had been spoofed).

Ashu even threatened the organisers that if these things do not stop, he will take the stage and ask the audience, if these kind of jokes should be allowed at award functions.

The organisers apparently had to literally plead with him not to take such a step because it would spoil India’s image internationally as IIFA has a global reach.

Although he did not take the stage, Ashu did not spare Riteish and Boman. He was reportedly overheard telling people just because Riteish is a minister’s son, he thinks he can get away with anything.

Not one to lie low, Riteish too fired at Ashu and told him to take jokes sportingly.

The duo even questioned why Ashu never objected when Shah Rukh Khan poked fun at everyone whenever he hosted an award show.

Since this is the second time Ashu’s lost his temper at an awards night, we wonder if organisers will invite him to such functions in future.

The Barjatyas may be lying low after Ek Aur Vivah, but they’re planning to return with their grandest film of all. To be directed by Satish Kaushik, it will be a bio-pic on the life and music of the legendary musician-singer Tansen who regaled Emperor Akbar’s court in the 16th century. The last important film on Tansen was made in 1943 when K L Saigal immortalised the classical vocalist with his screen presence and voice in a film directed by Jayant Desai. The only actor-singer today is Himesh Reshammiya. But Himesh as Tansen?

Apparently since Kaushik worked with him in Karz, Himesh’s name did come up for consideration. But the Barjatyas, known to be sticklers for protocol and tradition, firmly vetoed the idea. And the mantle has fallen on Abhishek Bachchan.

“He has the look and intensity. He also has the dialogue delivery of his father. And we do need a Tansen who thinks in Hindi and talks the language fluently,” said Satish. That kind of eliminates the Barjatyas’s favourites Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan — who apparently were also considered. But the all-important music score that will require a firm grip over classical elements, is going to another favourite, Ravindra Jain, who did films like Geet Gata Chal and Chit Chor.
