Three National Award winning artistes pool talent for a full-blown commercial comedy

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; November 17, 2009)

Remember Amita Pathak? She’s the girl who made her debut opposite Adhyanan Suman in Haal-e-Dil. Now Amita is back wearing the producer’s hat. The 20-something has just launched her banner Wide Frame Films. And, she is combining forces with Hollywood giant Warner Bros Pictures India to make her first production — Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? — a subtle satire which when translated means, ‘Guest when will you leave?’

Amita says, “The story idea is mine. We had a guest at home for three months who over-stayed his hospitality. And it lead to so many funny and frustrating situations. When I narrated this to my director (Ashwini Dhir) and to my father (Kumar Mangat) they felt it made the perfect premise for a rip-roaring comedy. And that’s how Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? was born.”
Amita even managed to get not one but three National Award winning artistes — Ajay Devgan, Konkona Sen Sharma and Paresh Rawal to greenlight her project almost immediately.

Says Ajay, the leading man, “I liked the script because it is very real… and has some slice-of-life comic situations. It is also very cleverly written and the humour in the dialogue makes it very likeable. I’m sure people from all walks of life will identify with this because every home must have had a guest who has been the bane of their lives.”

The music for this film is by the hot-shot composer Pritam and the film will release globally on February 26, 2010. “The script of Atithi… itself is a non-stop laugh riot and when you add the comical talents of Ajay, Paresh and Konkona, we have a winner at the box office,” says Denzil Dias, Deputy Managing Director (Theatrical) , Warner Bros. Pictures India.
Adhyayan Suman goes back to his childhood sweetheart, after his break-up with Kangna Ranaut. Let’s call her Maya
By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 16, 2009)

Adhyayan Suman

Kangna Ranaut

Adhyayan Suman and Kanga Ranaut may scream from the rooftops that ending their romantic relationship was a mutual decision but our source informs us that it’s not true. Apparently Adhyayan’s claims that they ended their relationship in order to focus on their respective careers, is not the whole truth.

Our source, who’s close to the Suman family, reveals, “The fact is that Adhyayan left Kangna to return to his childhood sweetheart, who also happens to be his neighbour. Adhyayan’s parents, who were totally opposed to his relationship with Kangna, were sure that their son would come back to the girl they approve of. And Adhyayan is now trying very hard to win her back. The girl, Maya (real name withheld on the request of the Suman family) is not from the film industry. She’s been almost like a member of the Suman family for years now. So after the way Adhyayan treated her and dated Kangna, she is naturally wary of renewing her relationship with him. But Adhyayan is completely over Kangna now, and they aren’t in touch at all. So she is giving him a second chance.”

Kangna, however, refuses to talk about Adhyayan. She would rather focus on the new man in her life… Lord Krishna! Yes, like Lata Mangeshkar and Hema Malini, the two most well-known Krishna bhakts in Bollywood, Kangna has now given her heart to God. Says a friend close to Kangana, “She feels the connection with divinity puts one’s life in a place where it’s impossible to get shaken by the impermanence of man-woman relationships. Kangna’s God and her family are her two sources of strength. Beyond that she is not thinking about anyone right now.”

Happier still is the news that Kangna is finally getting together with Hrithik Roshan for a television show, belying rumours of tension with the actor over the publicity of Kites. Reasons a source close to Kangna, “Kangna is very clear on this issue. Kites is basically a love story between Hrithik and Barbara Mori . So why should he not be highlighted in the publicity? Kangna love Hrirhik as an actor.” Kangna and Hrithik are recording for Farah Khan’s talk show Tere Mere Beech Mein on Sunday. That should put to rest all rumours about Kangna being unhappy about the Kites publicity.

…says Kangna Ranaut, who’s said goodbye to intense roles and is up for comedy

AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; August 10, 2009)

Goodbye Adhyayan Suman, farewell intense, brooding roles… Kangna Ranaut is presenting herself in a new avatar to Bollywood — that of the romantic comediene. She’s shooting her very first comedy — No Problem with Akshaye Khanna — and will take up another, Tannu Weds Mannu with R Madhavan, immediately after that. This image change couldn’t have come at a better time.

“Yes, I am seeing a lot of changes recently, more positive than negative thankfully,” she said of her personal and professional life. Excited about doing comedy, Kangna said, “It’s taken so long for me to do what most conventional actresses start out doing — romance or romantic comedies. But better late than never. I was tired of being depressed, now it’s time to have some fun,” she said.

Admitting she’s not too funny a person in real life, despite having a humorous side, the sexy
star said, “I am glad I did the intense kind of roles early on in my career. But now I am happy with the kind of films coming my way.” And that includes Once Upon A Time In Mumbai and the Hrithik Roshan-Barbara Mori-starrer Kites, amongst others. Does she feel left out considering the film is being promoted solely with these two stars? “I have done my job, the rest is the filmmakers’ call, they can market it in whatever way they want to,” she replied, adding, “at the end of the day, it’s only good performances that’ll stand out.”

Her break-up has not really left Kangna heartbroken and hurt, or the actress is not showing any signs of it. “It’ll take a lot more than these ups and downs in life to break me,” she said. “And it’s really not as if I am working to get over anything. Work’s keeping me busy for work’s sake, but yes, it’s keeping me distracted from pondering too much about the past. I know that love hurts sometimes, but I can never stop being in love.”

Love Aaj Kal4

I still can’t believe this! The predictions which I made 8 weeks back have proved to be almost true! In my talk no. 53, I had made a prediction of 8 yet-to-be-released Hindi films and guess what, 7 of them have proved to be completely right!

According to my predictions, New York, Kambakkht Ishq and Love Aaj Kal would be successful at the BO. Barring Kambakkht Ishq, New York became a hit while Love Aaj Kal (released last Friday) took a fabulous opening and may soon become the biggest hit of 2009 so far! Then, I had guessed that Paying Guests, Let’s Dance, Runway and Short Kut would flop commercially and all these film did indeed bit the dust! Adhyayan Suman starrer Jashnn would be disastrous, according to my guess, and the same happened!

The only film for which my prediction didn’t hit the mark was Kambakkht Ishq (KI). I had a feeling that the film would turn out to be great as it has come from the stable of producer Sajid Nadiadwala, who has given some of the best entertainers in the past. His films have been entertaining, interesting and have suited the taste of the moviegoers in general. However, KI failed to entertain many. Even though it took a great opening, the mixed response (mostly negative) took a toll in its collections. It has managed to be above-average. So I get 7 on 8 right which is not bad, I guess!

Talking about Love Aaj Kal, the huge opening is an indication that the film may be hugely successful overall. If that is so, then it may turn out to be Saif’s biggest hit so far! Not to forget, this may be the biggest hit by any debut producer-actor ever (Saif Ali Khan is also producer of the film)!

Normally, it is the general tendency to remember an actor’s failures more than his hits. But with Saif, it’s happening reverse-people have forgotten that he delivered three duds last year (Tashan, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Roadside Romeo). He’s already in the line of upcoming superstars. If Saif’s upcoming flicks, Agent Vinod (also starring Kareena) and Kurbaan (again Kareena and also Vivek Oberoi) prove to be hits, Saif ki nikal padegi!

The week gone by was fabulous due to Love Aaj Kal’s release and also because the promos of as many as 8 upcoming films were unveiled before the audiences! Never before have so many promos of different films have come out in such a short time. These 8 films were Aladin (Ritesh, BigB, Sanju), Acid Factory (Fardeen, Dia, Irrfan Khan, Aftab, Manoj Bajpayee, Danny), Wanted (Salman and Ayesha), ‘What’s Your Raashee?’ (Priyanka in 12 roles and also Harman), Do Knot Disturb (Govinda, Ritesh, Sush, Lara, Sohail, Ranvir Shorey), Accident On Hill Road (Celina and Abhimanyu Singh), Vaada Raha (Bobby and Kangna) and Fox (Sunny Deol, Arjun Rampal, Udita Goswami, Sagarika Ghatke)! Whew! The teasers of Wanted, ‘What’s Your Raashee?’, Do Knot Disturb and Fox have already begun on TV. I feel the best promo out of all was that of Acid Factory. I have uploaded it below-do check! You’ll feel like watching it again and again!

Jashnn The Bhatts have often told stories that seem straight out of everyday life. Their new outing JASHNN also mirrors the thoughts of zillions of hopefuls. It’s about a nobody who wants to achieve success in life, wants to live his dreams, wants to become a somebody some day. In that respect, JASHNN, with director duo Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala in the driving seat, drives home the point convincingly.

You can’t deny the fact that JASHNN brings back memories of the immensely likable ROCK ON!!, for JASHNN is also about a boy band, about dreams, about defeat and about success. Like ROCK ON!!, JASHNN also looks at relationships, but the relationships here are poles apart.

In this case, the protagonist [Adhyayan Suman] is living off his sister [Shahana Goswami], who is reduced to being the mistress of a wealthy entrepreneur [Humayun Saeed] and who loathes the protagonist. Actually, the relationship between the siblings and also the volatile relationship between Adhyayan and Humayun are the mainstay of the film. Sequences between them expose the stark reality of life.

But JASHNN is not without its share of hiccups. The romantic track could’ve been as intense as the volatile ones. Also, it gets long drawn towards the second hour and robs the film of its sheen to an extent. But the climax more than compensates for the blemishes. Thankfully!

All said and done, JASHNN is yet another compelling tale from the house of Bhatts. Super music coupled with bravura performances from its principal cast makes JASHNN an interesting watch.

Akash [Adhyayan Suman] thirsts to become a singing icon. But though he has dreams in his heart, he is unable to find that distinctive voice that he can call his own, that will propel him to the top. Only when he confronts a bitter truth – that he is freeloading off his elder sister Nisha [Shahana Goswami], who, in order to offer him a decent lifestyle, has become the mistress of a rich businessman Aman Bajaj [Humayun Saeed] – is he is able to touch his inner core.

Jashnn Call it irony or a twist of fate, but the person who sees him through this dark night and mentors him when he’s down and out is none other than the sister of the person who he hates most in the world – Aman Bajaj. It is Sara [Anjana Sukhani], Aman’s sister, who makes him realize that he is an extremely talented man and is simply going through a bad phase.

In the end, he not only touches his inexhaustible potential and becomes an overnight star, but also humbles his biggest detractor Aman Bajaj and in the process, lives up to the faith that his sister and Sara had in him all along.

Director duo Raksha and Hasnain step into a different domain [emotions], after attempting thrillers. And the relationships here are too complex. Some instances…

  • Watch out for the tiff between Adhyayan and Humayun, when the latter abuses Shahana. The subsequent sequence, when Adhyayan apologises to Humayun at his office, is heart-breaking.
  • Here’s another. Adhyayan and Shahana enter Anjana’s party and the confrontation that ensues with Humayun there. Another master stroke!
  • Note another sequence. In the post-interval portions, Adhyayan’s demo is rejected by the music company baron and his outburst at this point. It breaks your heart!
  • The same night, he takes refuge in drinks and even robs money from another guest at the hotel. What happens thereafter is astonishing.
  • In the climax, Adhyayan calls his sister on stage and makes her accept the trophy from Humayun. Clapworthy, but deeply emotional!
// <![CDATA[// // <![CDATA[// // <![CDATA[//

But, as mentioned earlier, JASHNN loses its grip during the romantic sequences. The film dips in the second hour, which is long drawn and half as convincing at times. The low phase that Adhyayan goes through could’ve been more effective and shorter.

Jashnn Director duo Raksha and Hasnain show sparks of brilliance in the above-mentioned scenes and they get solid help from writer Shagufta Rafique, whose screenplay is watertight, barring the portions mentioned above. You expect every Bhatt movie to be embellished with melodious and soulful music and the songs in JASHNN are seeped in melody, especially the final track. Dialogues are powerful and dipped in acid at times. Camerawork is up to the mark.

All four actors shine in their respective roles. Adhyayan Suman takes giant strides. Note the helplessness, the sorrow, the dejection and the eventual exhilaration. This is Adhyayan’s showreel. Humayun Saeed, from across the border, is brilliant. This film makes you wake up to this talent, which gives the film a rich texture. Here’s an actor to watch. Shahana Goswami is already going from strength to strength and JASHNN only proves that she’s matchless. She handles her part with amazing understanding. Anjana Sukhani is a revelation. Again, this film should act as a showreel for her. She’s excellent.

On the whole, JASHNN is a moving tale with three USPs – its music, the emotional quotient and the performances by its four actors. Despite some loose ends, it should slowly and steadily win over cinegoers based on these three factors.

Adhyayan Suman is frantically trying to call Hrithik Roshan for Jashnn’s trial show tonight. Hrithik refuses to respond to his calls and text messages
By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 16, 2009)

Adhyayan Suman

Hrithik Roshan

Adhyayan Suman is getting desperate after delivering a flop like Haal-e-Dil. Never mind that Raaz 2 fared averagely. He didn’t really have much to do in it. Now that Adhyayan has pinned his hopes on his forthcoming film, Jashnn, he has decided to have a trial show at a suburban multiplex tonight. And to increase the film’s brand value, he has been inviting the biggest stars from the industry. Much to his dismay, Hrithik Roshan does not seem to be interested.

A source said, “Adhyayan has been trying to call Hrithik since yesterday morning but Hrithik refuses to take his call. Adhyayan has already called him quite a few times and even left several text messages. However, Hrithik neither took his calls nor called him back.”

Incidentally, Adhyayan was introduced to Hrithik by his former girlfriend, Kangna Ranaut, who stars opposite Hrithik in Kites.

Adhyayan admitted that he has been trying to call Hrithik. “Yes, I want Hrithik to see the film. However he has been busy shooting so I couldn’t speak with him. I will try and speak to him now. I spoke to his mother Pinkyji and hopefully he will be there for my trial.”

When asked if he has been calling people from the industry, he said, “Yes I just had a trial for Ashu (Ashutosh Gowariker) as well and I am calling all my friends from the industry.”

Will Hrithik attend the trial show or give a miss to co-star Kangna’s former boyfriend’s film?

Watch this space.
