Bollywood lets its hair down as 2009 comes to an end and raises its hopes for 2010

TEAM BT Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; December 31, 2009)

AMITABH BACHCHAN: In the New Year, the entire family is hoping to do the kind of work that would please the audience and carry the company forward. Our New Year wishes? May 2010 bring peace and well-being. May it fill us with pride as a nation. May our glory spread further. May we progress in all walks of life. And may the year keep me alive to witness the country, the film industry and my family prosper and progress. I look forward to the coming year passing peacefully.
KATRINA KAIF: I couldn’t hope for a better New Year’s day. I’m in London with my sisters and brother having the time of my life. We have lots of fun when we all are together. After I started working I have hardly seen my siblings. So meeting them is always special and a festival to mark our meeting, is the cherry on the cake. My mother forced me to leave my cell phone behind in Mumbai, so I’m almost cut off from Bollywood. What hopes for 2010? Lots of hard work and hopefully hits.

SHAH RUKH KHAN: I will be at home (Mannat) with Gauri, Aryan, Suhana and a couple of close friends like Karan Johar. Being with close family is the one thing I truly cherish.

AKSHAY KUMAR: Tina, Aarav and I are in Goa. I normally take a vacation from December 29 to January 2 because it includes a double celebration. Tina’s birthday on December 29, and then the New Year’s eve party. Honestly what can be better than spending time with your loved ones? This is a commitment I have made to my family.

DEEPIKA PADUKONE: I will be home in Bangalore with my parents and my sister. Then I go to Goa to wrap up the last fortnight on Ashutosh Gowarikar’s film. Every year I hope that the following year is as exciting as the previous year and I’m very happy with the way my professional life is going. Hope 2010 is the same.

RANBIR KAPOOR: I start shooting for Siddharth Anand’s film in the US from January 2. Since I didn’t wish to be in an aircraft on New Year’s eve, I left India on December 27. My entire family is in Dubai as tomorrow is my paternal grandmother’s birthday and the family is treating her to a one-week holiday there. I wish I could join them!

KAREENA KAPOOR: Saif and I are in England. We are catching up with Saif ’s Oxford batchmates and their spouses. I’m dying to wear my fur coat and sniff the English chill… looking and feeling every inch a diva. We work hard all the year around to make this happen, so let me enjoy myself.

BIPASHA BASU: I’m performing tonight. Then there will be a small get-together with friends. I always like to keep my New Year’s plans uncluttered. Home is the best place to be on any special occasion. And New Year will be a nonfilmy evening at home. Beyond that my only resolution for 2010 is, love yourself.

VIDYA BALAN: I bring in 2010 with my birthday tomorrow… no one can forget it! What hopes do I have for 2010? Oh plenty! After watching Mr Bachchan at work in Paa, I realised being focussed on your work to the point of shutting out everything else is not something I need feel guilty about. Now I’m all set to be seen as this full-blown, seductive, sexually-charged woman in Ishqiya. It brings an entirely new perspective to my personality for the audience. That’s what I’m hoping for in 2010… to find new aspects to my personality through the roles I play.

AJAY DEVGN: Kajol, Nysa, my parents, cousins, sister and her family and I will all be at our Karjat farm house. We’re planning an extended holiday. I start work only from January 2, so does Kajol. So in the meantime it is going to be a huge, long party.

AMRITA RAO: I wonder what 2010 has in store for me… Resolutions sound nice to the ears but adhering to them is a matter of destiny!

AMISHA PATEL: I have a show in Dubai. I will be working and then I will take a holiday. I always like working on New Year’s day because I feel you will then be working throughout!

RITESH DESHMUKH: Friends and I are contemplating how to ring in the New Year. It’s not compulsory to indulge in anything fancy, even a quiet time with good friends does the trick!

ARSHAD WARSI: I am looking forward to three releases in 2010. Will start Raju’s film next year so it’s going to be an eventful year. I haven’t a plan for New Year as yet. I’ll be with family and friends.

ANUSHKA SHARMA: I don’t do much for the New Year. Actually I do nothing. I just wish my family and go to bed.

SHABANA AZMI: As usual I’ll be with my family and a few close friends for the New Year.

IRRFAN KHAN: On every festive occasion I try to visit my mother in Jaipur. But for the New Year I made plans to be home. Beyond the New Year I’ve made no plans. I’ve noticed every time I’ve chalked out a plan for myself, life has humbled me. I leave all my plans to God.

MUGHDA GODSE: I am dancing at a live performance in Delhi tonight and will spend New Year with family and close friends. I’ve a horror film tentatively titled Help coming up for release. My co-star Bobby Deol is such a sweetheart. I hope to find a guy like him this year. Where are all the gentlemen?”

HEMA MALINI: I won’t be doing anything much for New Year. I’ll be with my family and rehearsing for my dance show which is on January 2.

POOJA BEDI: I’m having a small get-together on the terrace of my beachfront penthouse with flowers, candles and an incredible view of the entire city, with my father, my children and a few loved ones.

SUSHMITA SEN: I normally travel overseas. However, Alisah, my younger daughter, can’t travel abroad yet because she doesn’t have a passport. Hence it will have to be a beach resort in India.

ASIN: For me it will be a quiet New Year with family. I wanted to make it for Christmas itself, however I will ring in the New Year at my family home in Kerala.

Shahid Kapoor has asked for additional bodyguards as embarrassing acts by his female fans are getting too hot to handle

By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 09, 2009)

Shahid Kapoor is realising that stardom comes with its share of fan following, which can flatter and also embarrass one. Even as girls are going weak-kneed over Shahid’s cute boy-meets-hot body image thanks to his soaring popularity post Jab We Met and Kaminey, the actor feels that his female fan following is proving to be a major threat. Consequently, the actor has demanded extra bodyguards during all his future shoots

Shahid is currently shooting in Bangkok for Parmeet Sethi’s untitled with Anushka Sharma for Yash Raj Films. We had reported on November 12 about how a group of Indian girls on a Bangkok beach had demanded that Shahid should completely bare his upper torso for them. Being the shy guy that he is, Shahid, of course, was extremely embarrassed. A source says, “Shahid has a huge female fan following and is constantly mobbed at various places. At times it becomes too risky for him. Not wanting to cause any further problems, the actor has now asked for extra security.”

The source continues, “Usually, Shahid also has fans waiting outside his vanity van and they refuse to move till he meets them. This at times hampers the shoot schedule, disturbing not only Shahid but also the film unit. Now, Shahid wants a group of 5-6 bodyguards to be with him on the sets and also whenever he is shooting at an outdoor location where there is a greater risk of fans barging in on the sets.”

An official from YRF,downplayed the request and said, “We haven’t got extra guards for the shoot. YRF, does have adequate security for all its shoots at all times. Should an artiste ask for additional security, it will most certainly be provided. However, no additional security has been asked for during this shooting schedule.”

Hardcore vegetarian Shahid Kapoor is delighted with his newfound love for sushi

By Sonal Chawla / Deepak turbhekar (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 08, 2009)

This year’s sexiest vegetarian man in Asia, Shahid Kapoor, who doesn’t even eat eggs in his cake, has recently discovered a love for vegetarian sushi. The actor was recently introduced to the delights of the Japanese dish’s vegetarian version in a Bangkok restaurant Esao and has not stopped eating it since.

Since the past three weeks Shahid has been shooting for Parmeet Sethi’s untitled film in Bangkok with co-star Anushka Sharma. The actor has been shooting non-stop and after pack-up the unit usually goes out together for dinner. A source says, “After they wrap up early from shoots or on off days, Shahid rushes to the restaurant and relishes their sushi. The actor was unaware of vegetarian sushi till he went to this restaurant.”

“Shahid was initially unsure about tasting sushi but one of the unit members asked him to try it, and to Shahid’s surprise, he loved it. After that day, Shahid has been having vegetarian sushi almost daily. One rarely finds vegetarian food joints in Bangkok. For the first few days, Shahid had very limited options and would only eat at selected places. Now, Shahid is really excited about his new favourite dish. Every time the cast and crew go out, they all know what Shahid will order. Often the crew orders vegetarian sushi for Shahid even before he does. He also recommends it to everybody,” added the source.

Shahid confirmed his love for the Japanese dish. “I tried the vegetarian sushi at Esao and loved it,” he said.

Shahid’s top five foods

1. Rajma-chawal

2. Chilled mango shake

3. Vegetarian lasagna

4. Paneer makhani

5. A nice vegetarian burger

Akshay Kumar to wear old, used clothes taken from shop owners, in his next, Patiala House

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 03, 2009)

He might be one of the most stylish actors in Bollywood, but in Patiala House, Akshay Kumar will wear used clothes loaned by three shop owners.

Director Nikhil Advani has borrowed clothes from London’s shop owners as Akshay plays a character from Southall.

Our source revealed, “Akshay’s character in Patiala House is that of a Punjabi boy who is helping out his father by running a corner store in Southall, London. So to give Akshay authenticity, Nikhil visited several corner stores in Southall and zeroed in on three guys who are similar to Akshay in height and build. He has requested them to lend a few clothes to Akshay, and that’s what he will be dressed in for Patiala House.”

Nikhil said, “I didn’t want Akshay or anyone else’s character in film to look unreal or over the top. So while researching, we decided to shortlist a few guys who actually manage corner stores and asked them for their clothes.”

Slated to release on Diwali next year, Patiala House will go on floors in December and will be shot extensively at Southall. The film also stars Anushka Sharma, along with the magical jodi of Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor.

Anushka Sharma, who has recently bought herself a home in Mumbai, hasn’t found time to enjoy it because she has been busy with outdoor shooting schedules

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 02, 2009

Anushka Sharma, who made her Bollywood splash in YRF’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi opposite Shah Rukh Khan last year, has bought a three-bedroom apartment at Yari Road in Andheri.

Although she bought the flat a month ago and has already shifted there, she was hardly at home, owing to her extensive travels for film shootings.

A source says, “Anushka has been on a house hunting spree for a while now. Last month, she finally bought a three-bedroom apartment at Yari Road in Mumbai. Anushka shifted base to Mumbai a couple of years ago from Bangalore. Earlier, she stayed at the army colony in Malad. This is the first time that the actress has bought a house on her own and is very excited about it.”

Confirming the news, Anushka says, “I feel good about being able to buy a house at the age of 21. However, I am dying to be at home as I have had no time to actually enjoy it. First, I was away in the US for 40 days and now I am in Bangkok for a month.”

Nikhil Advani will hold a nation-wide contest to choose a teenager, who will play the 17-year-old Akshay Kumar in Patiala House
By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 17, 2009)

Akshay Kumar

Although Nikhil Advani’s Patiala House is set to go on the floors next month, his casting troubles are far from over.

After roping in Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma for the lead roles, Nikhil is now looking for a youngster who will play the 17 year-old Akshay Kumar.

Our source said, “The film’s team was tired of auditioning and watching show reels. None of the boys fulfilled the requirements. So, Akshay suggested that they conduct a nation-wide hunt. The participants essentially have to match Akshay’s height and body language.”

The contest will begin from December 1. The advertisements announcing the same will be published in newspapers across India. Moreover, the filmmakers have tied up with two news channels, one entertainment channel and a multiplex chain for the contest. The entries will be collected from December 1 to December 15. Director Nikhil Advani, will select ten semi-finalists. The winner will then be chosen by Akshay Kumar.

Talking about Akshay’s determination, Nikhil said, “Akshay is very keen on casting someone who comes from a real background. At 17, Akshay was a typical middle class boy; he wants some of his qualities to show in the boy who will play him in the film.”

Patiala House will be produced by Bhushan Kumar and Mukesh Talreja. The film will be running on a tight schedule as it has already been slotted for a 2010 Diwali release.

Nikhil Advani to create London’s Southall in Mumbai’s Film City for Patiala House

Southall, a locality in London, monopolised by Asians, will be recreated to the last detail in Mumbai for Nikhil Advani’s forthcoming film, Patiala House.

Confirming the news, Nikhil says, “It’s a cross-cultural film about a generation gap. It’s set in 2010 but will go back to the infamous Southall racial riots in 1979. Since the Southall of 1979 was impossible to replicate in London, my art director Priya Raghunath is recreating it in Mumbai for me at Film City.”

Patiala House is a rare, non-comic outing for Akshay. “I had put in some lighter moments and comic interludes for Akshay but he firmly asked me to take them out. Patiala House will be unlike anything Akshay has done so far,” says Advani.

The film’s shooting will take place between December 18 and January 31. It is produced by Mukesh Talreja and also stars Anushka Sharma.
