WHEN FILMS DON’T GET A TIMELY RELEASE…

RAAT GAYI BAAT GAYI:

Last week’s discussion of The Hangover brings to my mind another topic of the upcoming film Raat Gayi Baat Gayi (RGBG) which is all set to release on December 31. Presented by Percept, produced by Pritish Nandy and Rajat Kapoor and directed by Saurabh Shukla, RGBG stars Vinay Pathak, Rajat Kapoor, Neha Dhupia Anu Menon, Navneet Nishan and Dalip Tahil. The film was announced 2 years back in 2007 and it’s ready since a long long time. But due to some reason, the film which could have released earlier this year is now finally releasing (and anyways, when Percept is involved, then that film is bound to get postponed!!).

On the other hand, The Hangover released this year and took the world by storm. Unfortunately, RGBG’s plot is very similar to that of The Hangover. While The Hangover was a story of four friends going to LA for a bachelor party only to wake up the next morning and not remembering a thing, RGBG involves three men who attend a party with their wives and where they come across a sexy lady. The men get drunk and when they wake up next day, they couldn’t remember what happened after meeting the lady. So the amnesic angle is common in both of the films but the situations are drastically different.

However, RGBG is not a copy of Hangover as the script of RGBG was written way back and the shooting was also completed last year, some 7-8 months before Hangover released. But the damage is done-a huge section of moviegoing audience has already thrashed RGBG as a ‘copy’. Teasers of RGBG are uploaded on YouTube with the title ‘Promo-Raat Gayi Baat Gayi (Hangover Remake)’. Madness!

Now it remains how RGBG is received by the audience and critics. The exciting news is that it won the Best Film Award at the HBO’s South Asian International Film Festival held in New York in Oct-Nov. This again is an indication of the originality of the script of the film! I hope the lesson is learnt-let’s not waste time in releasing our films.

KHALLBALLI:

Khallballi, on the other hand, seems like a copy of De Dana Dan (but it’s not)! This flick too is ready since a long time. Directed by Ajay Chandok (director of flops like Nehlle Pe Dehlla, Team-The Force etc), it stars Nikhil Dwivedi (who debuted in My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves), Southern siren Sada, Rajpal Yadav, Suresh Menon, Johny Lever, Zakir Hussain, Asrani, Vrajesh Hirjee, Tiku Talsania, Chunky Pandey and many others. The promos of the film began somewhere in September last year and the film was scheduled to release on Jan 9, 2009. But it was pushed forward and since then, there has been no news on the film.

The producer of the film, Azam Khan who had carved out a wise promotional strategy for Phoonk, had even thought of a similar idea for Khallballi. During Phoonk, anyone sitting throughout the film without getting scared was to be given 5 lakhs. For Khallballi, the produced challenged anyone to sit through the film with a straight face without any signs of laughter. And the reward here was double-Rs. 10 lakhs!

After the film got postponed indefinitely, the contest was thrown out of the window and Azam Khan is now busy with Phoonk-2! Even if Khallballi gets a release in near future, it’ll be dubbed as a ‘poor man’s De Dana Dan’ as the plot in both films are almost same-the lovers and other interesting characters inside a hotel leading to mistaken identities and helter-skelter in the end! Very unfortunate!

GET READY FOR AVATAR’S RELEASE


The biggest flick of all time, Avatar is hitting the screens tomorrow. Directed by James Cameron of Titanic fame, the film is expected to provide a fresh outstanding experience of cinema. The makers are recommending the viewers to watch it in 3D. But everywhere, the film is releasing in 3D in handful of theatres. Anyways, Avatar seems a must watch film and all those wanting to have some exciting experience should definitely watch it!

Be forewarned. DE DANA DAN is the most bizarre film from the maharaja of laughathons, Priyadarshan. Not even in your wildest dream you’d think that Priyadarshan would place almost an entire film in a hotel and have its entire cast, comprising of 26 [or is it 27?] characters, most of them weirdos, interacting with each other. Brings back memories of BLAME IT ON THE BELLBOY? May be!

But Priyadarshan needs to be credited for pulling it off. There are times when you laugh hysterically at the most outlandish jokes and situations. There are times when a raised eyebrow or a wide-open jaw makes you break into a guffaw.

Be cautioned. DE DANA DAN is a loud film, with each and every character screaming on top of his/her voice, with the characters shouting, running, even floating and swimming in the end.

But what do you expect in a Priyadarshan film that has a title like DE DANA DAN? The promos never promised path-breaking or thought-provoking cinema that would give birth to debates and discussions. So why look for logic in this one?

DE DANA DAN makes no qualms of narrating a story you haven’t heard before. Here, the story is non-existent and it’s left on Priyadarshan to mix-n-match those two dozen characters and keep the momentum alive for the next 2.45 hours.

DE DANA DAN promises laughter and entertainment and sticks to its promise. This one’s not for the hard-nosed types, but for those who worship escapist cinema. Who want to chuckle, giggle and chortle at those mindless jokes. In short, DE DANA DAN is a pure dhamaal entertainer!

Nitin [Akshay Kumar] is a butler, cook, driver, watchman, gardener to a wealthy female industrialist [Archana Puran Singh] in Singapore. Like any young man, Nitin too dreams of a better life. He desperately wants to become rich and marry the love of his life, Anjali [Katrina Kaif], who supports him financially.

Ram [Suniel Shetty], Nitin’s best friend, also came to Singapore with the dream of striking it rich, but ended up a courier delivery man. He falls for Manpreet [Sameera Reddy], but her high society parents will never approve of marriage, not unless Ram has lots and lots of money.

In the midst of all this is Harbans [Paresh Rawal], a shrewd businessman, who’s looking for ways to multiply his income and avoid his debtors. He decides the best way would be to marry his son [Chunky Pandey] off to a girl whose parents can give him a large dowry. He is introduced to Manpreet’s parents at a function and is impressed by their social status. He introduces himself as a well-established businessman, impresses them and they decide to get Manpreet and Harbans’ son married.

With several factors working against them, Nitin and Ram soon reach a dead end in their relationships. When both receive ultimatums from their girlfriends, they realize that only a life of vice can help them out of their misery. They come up with an audacious plan to kidnap someone important and demand a ransom.

The kidnapping goes awry and both hide at a local hotel while waiting for the ransom money. But misfortune is never far and the kidnapping spirals out of control.

Meanwhile, Manpreet’s wedding reception is being held at the same hotel that Nitin and Ram are hiding in. Soon, they are joined by a motley set of characters including a Chinese Don [Asrani], a hired assassin [Johny Lever], a ACB police inspector [Sharat Saxena], a club dancer [Neha Dhupia], an ambassador [Vikram Gokhale], a young frustrated double crossing wife [Aditi Govitrikar], a letch [Shakti Kapoor], a drunken waiter [Rajpal Yadav] and a dead body nobody wants to check into the hotel.

DE DANA DAN is atypical Priyadarshan film that has the unmistakable stamp all over it. But, at the same time, DE DANA DAN is erratic and uneven – energetic at times, lethargic at places. Also, the culmination to the film is very similar to the director’s earlier works, with the entire cast running helter-skelter.

On the flip side, you miss Akshay’s presence in the second hour. He disappears [gets locked in a cupboard] for at least 20 minutes and the focus, hence, shifts to the other characters. His fans will miss his presence, for sure. Besides, the film tends to get very lengthy towards the second half and overtly verbose too.

Director Priyadarshan is synonymous with comedies and the ace storyteller promises laughter in abundance. Handling so many characters, plus making a film on mistaken identities could be very tough, but the director gets it right. Pritam’s music is alright, while the RDB track, ‘Paisa’, is the pick of the lot. Salim-Sulaiman’s background score is energetic. K. Ahambaram’s cinematography is alright.

The review would be incomplete if one ignored the dialogue writer’s [Jay Master] contribution to the film. The lines are laced with wit and soaked in humour and bring the house down on several occasions.

DE DANA DAN has so many characters that it gets difficult to pinpoint or single out any one actor. Akshay is at his best in a Priyadarshan film and DE DANA DAN proves it. Suniel is natural to the core. Paresh is incredible; he pitches in a superb act. Katrina and Sameera don’t have much to do. Amongst the plethora of actors, Johny Lever, Neha Dhupia, Manoj Joshi, Asrani, Vikram Gokhale and Archana Puransingh deserve special mention.

On the whole, DE DANA DAN is targeted at the masses and it delivers laughter in abundance. Leave your brains behind to enjoy this madcap entertainer!

It was really disappointing to see the spate of comic flicks released in recent times. Some said that there have been an overdose of comic flicks and that’s why now each one of them is failing. However, the underlying truth was-those films flopped because all of them were plain bad films-as simple as that! Some producers had assumed that even if the script is flawed, their comic caper would work and audiences would accept. And when this didn’t happen, they came up with the explanation of overdose! All The Best breaks all these myths! The film is a laugh-a-minute riot and it works damn big time because of its wonderful performances, mind-blowing script and even better execution. This is the most satisfying comedy in a long time, in the lines of Hungama, Hera Pheri et al!

The story of the movie: Veer (Fardeen Khan), a singer, stays in Goa and has a car-expert friend Prem Chopra (Ajay Devgn) and a ‘vastu-expert’ girlfriend Vidya (Mughda Godse). Veer’s elder bro, Dharam (Sanjay Dutt) is a big businessman who stays in London and sends money to Veer each month. Dharam then starts sending ‘double pocket money’ to Veer after Veer falsely tells Dharam that he has got married to Vidya-an idea given by Prem to Veer! Unfortunately, Veer and Prem get into debt and have to repay Rs. 10 lakhs to a local goon, Tobu (Johny Lever) in a week. In the midst of all this, Dharam pays an unexpected visit to Veer! Due to some misunderstandings, Dharam mistook Prem’s wife Jhanvi (Bipasha Basu) as Veer’s wife Vidya! Watch the movie to see how the drama and madness unfolds!

All The Best takes some time to set the mood and once it takes control, it entertains and how! The real mazaa initiates when Dharam visits Veer. From here till the last frame, the film is abounding with outstanding hilarious moments!

With so many characters in the narrative, the film could have got confusing. But it doesn’t, even for a second! You understand everything that’s going on even in every scene! Kudos to the screenwriters and the director! Also, there is not a single vulgar or double meaning joke in the entire film! Thus, All The Best is a clean and uncomplicated film which can be enjoyed by everyone from kiddos to oldies!

The fun quotient at times gets a little low esp in the 2nd half. Also there are some flaws in the story too. But there’s so much funny things happening in the film that you just don’t care! The film gets a bit mellow only during the song ‘Kyun’. But even that is so wonderfully treated that you are left amazed!

The climax is chaotic but isn’t nonsensical like seen in some recent comic flicks. In fact, the climax entertains and it also has a twist, which brings the house down!

From the promos, it seemed that Sanjay Dutt will steal the show. But surprise! It’s Ajay Devgn who comes up with the best performance! He showcases excellent comic timing and this is definitely one of the best performances of his career! With this film, he also turned producer and scores in it too!

Sanjay Dutt, like everytime, was just marvelous! He is an expert when it comes to comedies and gives a smashing performance. He was in much better form than he was in Blue and Luck! Watch out for his scenes with Ajay-both the talented actors steal the show! Just fabulous work!

Sanju and Ajay deliver such powerful performance that others get overshadowed, even though all were rocking. Fardeen Khan was brilliant although he had a better screen presence in Acid Factory and Life Partner. Bipasha Basu had an important role and does a great job. Mughda Godse looks charming but unfortunately doesn’t have much to do in the film, esp in the 1st half.

The film has lots of supporting actors who contribute a lot in making the film a hilarious caper. Johny Lever as the dumb goon was amazing. He rocks big time in 2 scenes-when the tyre of Ajay’s car gets under his feet and in the climax. Johny Bhai is back! Sanjai Mishra’s performance, too, was brilliant and he provides ample moments of laughter throughout the film. Asrani, Vijay Patkar, Atul Parchure, Ashwini Kaleskar and Mukesh Tiwari contribute well. The film also stars Shraddha Musale, who plays Dr Tarika in the weekly sitcom, CID!

Pritam’s music was in sync with the film. The title song and Dil Kare were the best songs. Haan Main Jitni Martaba was unnecessarily added but again, one doesn’t mind. Everything is so perfect in the film!

Dudely’s cinematography is as cool and stylish as his name! Jai Singh’s action and Rakesh Ranjan’s sound design works wonders in the car racing scene. Sanjoy Chowdhury’s background score was apt.

Finally, we come to the winners! Farhad-Sajid and Bunty Rathore’s dialogues are funny, witty and very impressive! Robin Bhatt and Yunuj Sejawal-the two experienced writers come up with a terrific screenplay. None of the scene seemed messy and this is how scripts should be in comic flicks!

And Rohit Shetty deserves nothing but applause! He has evolved wonderfully as a director. He knows what the audience wants and delivers everything perfectly! His first flick, Zameen was impressive. His popularity soared with his second film, Golmaal. But in my opinion, it fell at lots of places in the 2nd half. His 3rd film Sunday was disappointing while Golmaal Returns was as good as Golmaal. Thus, All The Best is undoubtedly his most accomplished work so far! Take a bow!

On the whole, All The Best is a true winner in all respects! It is the finest comic flick to hit theatres in a long long time! It’s a must watch for audiences of all age groups! Go with your siblings or with your parents or with your friends or with your loved one or simply go alone-but do go for it…coz it’ll surely make your day! ENJOY!!

Times have changed, but certain film-makers are still stuck up in the era gone by and that reflects in their cinema. That’s what you realise when you watch RUSLAAN.

The film highlights a terrorist act that shook the nation a few years ago and how the life of an innocent goes topsy-turvy when he’s falsely framed as a terrorist [KHUDA KAY LIYE and more recently NEW YORK also depicted this]. But the gravity of the situation doesn’t come across on the screen because the writing is amateurish and the execution, childish.

Ruslaan [Raajveer] lives with his parents and a younger sister. He’s in love with Samaira [Meghaa Chatterjee]. One day, a series of blasts occur at various railway stations of Mumbai and the cops arrest Ruslaan for this act of terror.

Director Mohan C. Sharma looks at a serious issue [train blasts in Mumbai], but there’s nothing in the film that moves you or makes you think. In fact, the love story [between Raajveer and Meghaa] is also under-developed and the terrorist track is poorly written as well.

Why is Ruslaan picked up by cops, is never explained. Also, Ruslaan is thrown in a lock up, but the execution is such, it gives an impression that he’s a petty thief, not a terrorist. Seems like no detailing whatsoever has gone into the scripting [writers: Brahma-Dhruv]. Music [Raees Jamal Khan] is the sole saving grace. ‘Maula Maula’ is the pick of the lot.

Raajveer tries hard to infuse life in his role, but, surprisingly, is relegated to the backseat in the second hour. Meghaa should’ve faced the camera after proper grooming. Asrani is as usual. Shahbaaz Khan and Ganesh Yadav are as usual. S.M. Zaheer and Smita Jaykar are okay.

On the whole, RUSLAAN is a weak fare.

If a play is successful, it doesn’t necessarily mean that its cinematic adaption too would work. Paying Guests just confirms this. Based on a successful play, the film would have clicked even if it had some minor loopholes. But alas, the film falls at several places. Besides, the weak direction spoil the things more.

The story of the movie: Bhavesh (Shreyas Talpade), Parag (Jaaved Jaffery) and Parikshit (Aashish Chowdhary) live as paying guests at the place of Kiska (Asrani) in Bangkok. Due to bad luck, one day, all three of them are thrown out of their respective jobs. At this point of time enters into the scene, Parikshit’s cousin Jayesh (Vatsal Seth), who arrives at Bangkok to work as an architect. Bad times are still not over for the three paying guests as they are thrown out by Kiska. They now desperately search for a new landlord, who would give them a room at cheaper rate. Finally, they get one such person-Ballu Singh (Jhonny Lever), who is coincidentally the former employer of Bhavesh. He is willing to rent his house only on one condition-the paying guest should be married!  And so, Bhavesh and Parag take the guise of women and pretend to be Parikshit and Jayesh’s wives, Karishma and Kareena, in front of Ballu and his wife (Delnaaz Paul)! What follows is madness!

Problems with Paying Guests are many. The biggest culprit is of course the execution. The screenplay also is to blame. The idea at hand was wonderful-four friends trying to fool a landlord (This idea was wonderfully utilized in Dostana recently). However, it was not fully tapped.

To add more drama in the story, the writer had added two villains-Chunkey Pandey and Inder Kumar. But both of them don’t help to improve things much. And the climax-you have to see it to believe it! Akbar, Salim, Ravana, Thakur, Spider Man, Phoolan Devi, Shehanshah, Krrish and even Osama-all come under one roof (and on one stage) and perform! What’s more, Spider Man calls Ravana his best friend who in turn gets smitten by Anarkali! It can’t crazier than this! Although this spoof-filled climax does manage to make you laugh, it was one of the most stupid climaxes of all time!

So any plus point in the film? Fortunately, yes! Besides nice performances, the film has some funny entertaining moments here and there which manage to raise a few laughs. The scene where the four friends are making fun of Asrani without knowing that he’s standing right at the back works well. Another funny sequence-Delnaaz believing that Shreyas is pregnant! Many such scenes succeed in entertaining.

Performance-wise, Shreyas Talpade was certainly the best one. Comedy has always been his forte and he performs perfectly, as per his character demanded. He was also very impressive in his women-act. He certainly deserves to be nominated for Best Comic Role!

Jaaved Jaffery and Ashish Chowdhary, too give a good a performance. Ashish was particularly excellent in the scenes with Neha Dhupia. Vatsal Seth, like everytime, looks charming. Jhonny Lever was as usual funny. Delnaaz Paul fails to make the viewers laugh. Same for Chunkey Pandey who was irritating. I wish he can repeat his Apna Sapna Money Money magic. Inder Kumar was horrible. Paintal was bearable.

The film also has four heroines-Neha Dhupia, Celina Jaitly, Sayali Bhagat and Riya Sen, who add to the glamour quotient in the film. However, only Neha Dhupia succeeds in making a mark. In one scene, one could clearly see her grey hair!

Sajid-Wajid’s music was plain average. Songs were added unnecessarily in the film. 2 songs-‘Jack & Jill’ and the title song stand out. P Shelvakumar’s cinematography was good. Although the film is shot in Pataya, its scenic locales were not showed much in the film. Dialogues, especially the ones mouthed by the four actors and Jhonny were funny. But the lines of Delnaaz, Chunkey and Inder were plain horrible.

Paritosh Painter impressed one and all with his screenplay and dialogues in Dhamaal. He has also directed plays, many of which are super-hits. Unfortunately, Paritosh fails to deliver this time. Paritosh is a great play director, but couldn’t do justice as a film director. The story (also penned by him) was good and could have been made into a better film. Better luck next time, Paritosh!

5.   Delnaz assuming that Shreyas is pregnant

On the whole, Paying Guests is a disappointment. It makes you laugh, but only in very few places. It’s better to avoid it and instead watch it on VCD/DVD/Cable later!

Never judge a book by its cover. But we do! We tend to get carried away by eye-catching promos that a film-maker unleashes prior to a film’s release. We act in haste, rush to a nearby cineplex and soon realise that the best parts were actually highlighted in the promos itself.

That’s exactly what you feel when you watch PAYING GUESTS, helmed by first-timer Paritosh Painter.

Comedy is serious business and Paritosh Painter ought to know this by now, since he has successfully directed a number of plays in the past. Sadly, PAYING GUESTS stands on a waferthin plot, although Paritosh tries hard to add meat to the skeletal body. The film doesn’t have the power to hold your attention for the next 2 hours, although it does [intermittently] make you smile or break into a guffaw.

Earlier too, we’ve had our macho men getting disguised as girls [Rishi Kapoor and Paintal in RAFOO CHAKKAR were hilarious], but PAYING GUESTS tries so hard to tickle your funny bone, but falls flat.

Final word? This comedy is more of a tragedy… for its viewers!

What happens when four fun-loving boys [Shreyas Talpade, Jaaved Jaffrey, Ashish Chowdhry and Vatsal Sheth] begin a crazy house hunt? In the search for a new accommodation, these crazy friends manage to convince their crazier landlord Ballu [Johny Lever] to keep them as paying guests, but Ballu has one condition, i.e. he wants only couples.

However, the problem is they are all bachelors. Who will play their wives?

PAYING GUESTS may be a remake of a play, but it also bears a striking resemblance to Sachin’s super-successful Marathi film ASHI HI BANWA BANWI. PAYING GUESTS starts off very well, but runs out of fuel in its initial 30 minutes itself.

You do laugh aloud initially and expect to wear a smile on your face all through the film, but the smile turns into a smirk gradually. Actually, the on-screen characters laugh all the while, not the audience.

PAYING GUESTS fails to deliver thanks to a poor screenplay. Barring the four heroes and the landlords [Johny Lever and Delnaaz Paul], the remaining characters in the film just don’t work. The four leading ladies have nothing worthwhile to do and even the negative forces here [Chunkey Pandey and Inder Kumar] are wasted.

The climax – in a theatre, with every character doing a spoof – is a straight lift from JAANE BHI DO YAARO.

Paritosh Painter had an interesting idea on hand, but the writing plays the villain here. Sajid-Wajid’s music is a ear-sore. Barring ‘Jack & Jill’, the remaining songs lack energy. Visually, the film looks good, with the locales of Bangkok and Pattaya adding freshness to the enterprise.

Of the cast, Shreyas is the best, followed by Javed, then Ashish and then Vatsal – in that order. The leading ladies don’t have much to do, but Celina and Neha are most noticeable. Riya and Sayali Bhagat don’t get any scope. Johny Lever is in form and so is Delnaaz Paul. Chunkey Pandey is alright, while Inder Kumar is wasted. Asrani stands out, while Viju Khote and Paintal are okay.

On the whole, this paying guest is just not welcome!
