RARING TO GO! Madhavan
Madhavan about his link-up with Kangna Ranaut and more in a chat with Deepali Dhingra

Sitting in his plush apartment on the 27th floor of the residential complex he stays in, Madhavan is a picture of restlessness. He directs the photographer on how to capture his moods, takes us for a walk around his house where he shows us airplanes he’s designed and the visit includes even a trip to the garage, where he keeps his prized posession, his bike! The actor vrooms around, for the photographer’s benefit before settling down with an amused expression on being enquired about the buzz between him and Kangna Ranaut, his co-star from Tanu Weds Manu. “Is there a rumour?” he enquires, “Well, then what do I say? I lead a very boring life. Either that or I’m too smart!” he laughs, when we make the observation that one hasn’t heard of too many link-ups when it comes to him. So what’s the scene between him and Kangna actually? “She’s an amazing professional. On the sets, she, her sister, her dog and I were a gang. That’s about it!” he says firmly. Okay point noted. Madhavan would rather talk about his other films 3 Idiots and Teen Patti, where he gets to be in the esteemed company of Amitabh Bachchan and Sir Ben Kingsley. “In 3 Idiots, I’m back again with Aamir Khan and Sharman Joshi after Rang De Basanti, so there was added pressure of living upto the expectations of the audience,” he says. And no, he wasn’t apprehensive about playing a college student at this age. “We’re not horrible old men with pot-bellies and sagging skin!” he exclaims, “It was about getting the lingo and body language correct.” As for Teen Patti, he just can’t get over having Big B all to himself, even if is for a few scenes. “We played golf in between shots and I have to say, they were the greatest singular most important moments of my life,” he smiles.

Working with Sir Ben Kingsley on the other hand, Madhavan can only attribute to karma. “I’d not thought of acting till I saw him in Gandhi, so I guess there has to be something like karma for me to be acting alongside him,” he adds.

Maddy, as he’s fondly called, wants to do what he calls masti films now. “I’m tired of doing meaningful films!” the actor chuckles, “The kind of cinema I did, I was doing to satisfy my ego. Now I don’t want to play the nice guy anymore — I want to catch the bull by the horns!” And by that, he means doing light-hearted roles, including romance and comedy. “I want to do some roles now that are closer to me in real life. God has made some creations who are made to enjoy life, I’m one of them!” he smiles. And he couldn’t have said it better.

Shahid Kapoor to tone down his muscular look and work on his body language for Mausam, which requires him to be young and innocent

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 03, 2009)

Shahid Kapoor will soon have to get rid of those hard earned abs. He beefed up for Kaminey and Chance Pe Dance to get the bare-chested, rippling muscle look in place.

However, Shahid’s forthcoming film, Mausam, will see him saying goodbye to his coveted physique.

Shahid will have to return to the boyish look he sported in Ishq Vishq and Jab We Met. In Mausam, he plays an inexperienced loverboy aged 21-22.

He has efficiently been oscillating between boyish to manly roles. He is going to take time off to work on his physique, so that it suits what is required of him in Mausam.

The film’s producer Sheetal Talwar of Vistaar Religare Film Fund confirmed our story. She said, “I can’t say much about Shahid’s look right now. But his entire body language and physique will have to be worked on.”

Our source added, “Shahid played a callow and inexperienced lover in Ishq Vishq and Fida. After Kaminey and Chance Pe Dance, Shahid plays a conman in a Yash Raj production. After that he needs to lose the sinewy muscular look to play the loverboy in Mausam.”

One look at a working still from Ajay Devgn, Konkona Sen and Paresh Rawal starrer Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge? and you are instantly reminded of License To Wed, an American film that was released a couple of years ago.

Right from the bedroom setting to the body language of the three principal characters (Robin Williams, Mandy Moore, John Krasinski) – it’s a case of an inspiration going a little too far. While in Atithi… , it’s Paresh Rawal who is the centre of attention (literally), in License To Wed it is Robin Williams who seems to be having all the fun as he comfortably places himself on the bed.

So, is the inspiration restricted only to the poster or is the story based on similar lines as well?

Kumar Mangat, producer of Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge? refutes the allegation, “First and foremost what we have released is not the First Look or a poster from the film; it is just a working still from a song that we have shot. Moreover, we have just been inspired from the poster of License To Wed. Beyond that, there aren’t any more similarities.”

Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge? is the story about an unwanted guest who enters the household of a married couple and lives for a long duration by continuously extending his stay. So much so, that the couple is exasperated and starts praying for his exit. While Ajay Devgn and Konkona Sen play the part of a married couple, Paresh Rawal is the uninvited guest.

On the other hand License To Wed, the film which was a moderate success in spite of being panned by critics, is the story of John and Mandy, a much in love couple, who go through a marriage preparation course, as suggested by Reverend Frank (Robin Williams). However, Frank makes their love life miserable as he demands chastity, bugs their apartment, initiates arguments, has them care for robot twins, creates friction and raises doubts.

As is quite apparent, the storyline of both Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge? and License To Wed is quite different. Apparently, Kumar Mangat was inspired by a real life incident at his own place when a guest refused to leave him for a long duration.

“This happened a year back”, laughs Mangat when reminded of the incident, “We were glad to have him home. However, it became a pain of sorts when he didn’t seem to be budging at all. It was amusing to begin with but later it all turned really frustrating. Meanwhile, Ashwani (writer and director of the film) also came up with the story idea of Atithi… and we decided to make a full fledged feature film.”

Incidentally, germ of Atithi…. is in a story titled Tum Kab Jaaoge Atithi which was penned by noted satirist Late Sharad Joshi. However, Mangat has purchased rights of the story.

With lyrics by Irshad Kamil and music by Pritam, Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge? is all set for a 26th February release.

Nikhil Advani will hold a nation-wide contest to choose a teenager, who will play the 17-year-old Akshay Kumar in Patiala House
By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 17, 2009)

Akshay Kumar

Although Nikhil Advani’s Patiala House is set to go on the floors next month, his casting troubles are far from over.

After roping in Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma for the lead roles, Nikhil is now looking for a youngster who will play the 17 year-old Akshay Kumar.

Our source said, “The film’s team was tired of auditioning and watching show reels. None of the boys fulfilled the requirements. So, Akshay suggested that they conduct a nation-wide hunt. The participants essentially have to match Akshay’s height and body language.”

The contest will begin from December 1. The advertisements announcing the same will be published in newspapers across India. Moreover, the filmmakers have tied up with two news channels, one entertainment channel and a multiplex chain for the contest. The entries will be collected from December 1 to December 15. Director Nikhil Advani, will select ten semi-finalists. The winner will then be chosen by Akshay Kumar.

Talking about Akshay’s determination, Nikhil said, “Akshay is very keen on casting someone who comes from a real background. At 17, Akshay was a typical middle class boy; he wants some of his qualities to show in the boy who will play him in the film.”

Patiala House will be produced by Bhushan Kumar and Mukesh Talreja. The film will be running on a tight schedule as it has already been slotted for a 2010 Diwali release.

Aamir Khan plays a character half his age in 3 Idiots, has modelled it on his teenage nephew Pablo. He has also taken to wearing baggy T-shirts and losing weight for a lean look

By Meena Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 05, 2009)

For Aamir Khan, the most challenging part of playing a 20-something in Raj Kumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots was to work on his physical appearance. The actor admits that he had to work on his mind, body, body language and even his wardrobe single-mindedly. To get under the skin of his character, the actor says he started observing kids. “Many of them were my son Junaid’s friends,’’ he admits. “I would closely observe how they talk, walk and behave.”

Aamir also lets out another secret. He apparently modelled his character Rancho on his cousin Mansoor Khan’s teenage son Pablo, who lives in Coonoor with his father. Aamir is very fond of Pablo and he says that he is fascinated by the way Pablo is always moving on his feet, not even stopping to talk. Apparently, the kid even talks while he is on the move. Says Aamir, “Pablo is so fidgety that he can’t stand still even for a few minutes.”

Director Raju Hirani reveals another secret. Apparently, for his wardrobe and his overall demeanour, Aamir has borrowed heavily from his Ghajini director AR Murgadoss. Says Aamir, “I love the boyish sparkle in his eyes… he always has a twinkle in his eyes and is full of excitement.”

Aamir says that he had keenly observed that the puny Murgadoss always wears worn-out clothes and T-shirts that are two sizes too large.

“Yaar, first I had work very hard to get those eight packs for Ghajini and then I had to work doubly hard to lose that dream physique and look lean,’’ says the actor. He confesses that he also borrowed a couple of oversized T-shirts from his Ghajini director.

AR Murgadoss

Finally, he adds that for Ghajini he had to workout strenuously for close to two hours for two years. And to get his 3 Idiots look, he had to reduce 10 kgs of pure muscle and make it look like a young boy’s physique for which he invested another year of rigorous badminton playing.

Says Aamir, “It was important for me to get into the mind of the character, I was sure that physically I would be able to pull it off by observing Pablo. But it was most important to feel young.”

After Blue, director Tony D’Souza to make his next, an aerial action film with Akshay Kumar and John Abraham
By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 22, 2009)

Akshay Kumar

John Abraham

After going underwater in Blue, director Tony D’Souza is all set to go midair for breathtaking stunts with hotties Akshay Kumar and John Abraham for his next action film.

This film will be set in the deserts of Las Vegas. Tony has already convinced Blue producers Ashtavinayak, to produce his next film too. Even though several factors have already been finalised, the film will go into pre-production only next year.

After showcasing some stunning underwater scenes in Blue, for his next film, Tony will indulge in hardcore action with his macho star cast. “Akshay was on board for this project right from the start. After Blue, I couldn’t dream of making a film without him. As for John, with his physique and body language, it’s strange for him to have not done a full-on action film in all these years,” said Tony.

Music director AR Rahman, despite his choc-a-block schedule, has agreed to compose the film’s music.

Akshay Kumar was in for a very pleasant surprise yesterday when rival Shah Rukh Khan walked onto his film’s sets
By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 19, 2009)

A picture speaks a thousand words. Going by these, which were clicked yesterday, superstars Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan have forgotten all their differences about who is the No 1 star in Bollywood. Yesterday, they were seen together at Film City where Akshay was shooting for Blue while SRK was shooting an ad film.

Interestingly, it was SRK who took the initiative to meet Akshay by suddenly landing up on the sets of Blue. Akshay, of course, was pleasantly surprised by this unexpected visit from SRK.

A source present on the sets of the film said, “SRK walked in on the sets of Blue yesterday afternoon to meet Akshay. SRK was shooting nearby on floor no 12 for an ad film when he heard that Akshay was shooting on floor no 1 for Blue. There were some media persons who were present on the sets of Blue.

They were surprised to suddenly see SRK on the sets of Akshay’s film. As soon as he heard about SRK’s visit, Akshay came out of his vanity van to greet him. Their body language was very friendly.

The two stars chatted inside the vanity van for 20 minutes. They have been discussing the possibility of a joint venture. Earlier too they had discussed the possibility of doing a film together at Preity Zinta’s birthday party. Now they have taken their discussion a step ahead. The film will be jointly produced by SRK’s production company Red Chillies and Akshay’s Hari Om Productions.”

According to the source, both are keen to make a film together and they will be meeting again soon to take things further. “Akshay and SRK know that it will be nothing short of a dream cast if they are seen together in a film made by them,” said the source.
