Ekta Kapoor, Dibakar Banerjee Ekta Kapoor won’t show her new film Love Sex Aur Dhokha directed by Dibakar Banerjee to her parents. Given her initial reaction she wouldn’t show it to anyone. But then better sense prevailed after she saw and absorbed Banerjee’s gritty and real feature film on digital drama.

Apparently, Ekta simply freaked out at the trial, screaming and wondering aloud what this director had made, for her Dibakar Banerjee’s first film for Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Films is also Ekta’s first foray into experimental cinema.

And when she saw the finished product, Ekta simply freaked out. According to onlookers Ekta’s reaction to Banerjee’s digitally-shot film on the absence of privacy and the prevalence of voyeurism in today’s time was one of horror and utter disbelief.

Dibakar Banerjee doesn’t deny his producer was shocked. “When Ekta saw the film she wasn’t so much shocked by the content on voyeurism and free-for-all invasion of privacy as the treatment and format. I’ve shot the film on a digital format with a hand-held camera. So Ekta’s first question was, ‘Why is the camera shaking so much?’ Her second question was, ‘Who is going to watch this film?’ Frankly I had answers for both the questions. But Ekta’s initial reaction of shock remains. She doesn’t really believe that such an unusual and shocking film is viable. But she sees me as this nice sweet seemingly harmless Bengali guy who can’t deliberately do anything wrong. She’s indulging me. See, normally the digital format is used by a filmmaker for the lack of choices. But for Love Sex Aur Dhokha the digital format was the only choice.

Ekta doesn’t deny she was startled by what she saw in Dibakar’s film. “The camera was shaking so much I was completely shaken. There are three stories and all of them affected me very deeply, specially the one about the woman who’s shot with a hidden camera. When I came out of the movie I was furtively looking for bugs and cameras everywhere. I realized I was so jolted not so much by the technique of storytelling which is unlike anything we’ve seen, but by content which tells us there is no privacy in today’s day and age of mobile cameras and MMS.”

Now Ekta is terrified of how Love Sex Aur Dhokha will be received. “Forget how it will be received. How will we release a film in such an experimental format? It’s easy for Dibakar to make what he wants. Now it’s my responsibility to see it reaches the audience.”

The question is how would a digital movie called Love Sex Aur Dhokha appeal to the audience? The title was nearly shot down by the moral watchdogs within the industry. But Dibakar stood his ground. “It had to be Love Sex Aur Dhokha. I know the title is reminiscent of Sex Lies & Videotape. But Love Sex Aur Dhokha is nothing like Steven Soderberg’s film. In fact it’s unlike anything audiences have seen. That is why Ekta is apprehensive.”

The 3D movie Avatar may have raked in millions at the box-office worldwide, but the quality of 3D glasses in city multiplexes is getting worse by the day

The cash registers are ringing in merry money – a good Rs 22 crore in box office receipts in India alone for the opening weekend – and Avatar is turning out to be one of those word-of-mouth monster hits. But movie-goers are complaining about the kaaniya quality of the 3D spectacles being provided at theatres.

The complaints are many: from slipping off the nose to the fingerprints of the spectator’s former avatar. Thirty-three-year-old software professional Sameer Gharat narrates his experience of watching Avatar at Imax, Wadala: “The 3D glasses offered to me ruined my movie-watching experience to say the least. They were uncomfortable to wear as they only had a one-size-fits-all.

Also, I was required to take off my own spectacles to wear the 3D glasses as they wouldn’t sit atop my own. Being a bit big in size, they would sit very low on the nose, while most people prefer the bridge of the specs to be at the top of the nose. Also, you generally tend to focus on the middle part of the screen. But if you look to the corner of the screen, your line of vision strays out of the frame, ruining the 3D experience.”

With the number of 3D movies that have released this year, one would expect multiplexes to be better equipped to nip such issues in the bud. But glasses slipping off and the uncomfortable experience are not the only issues.

Nandita Singh, a 26-year-old software professional who watched Avatar at the same theatre, suffered from the problem of lack of clarity. “I was forced to tilt my head to either side and this got my vision blurred and felt like I wasn’t wearing 3D glasses at all. Also, the 3D glasses weren’t hygienic and I had to clean the dirty fingerprints smeared all over its film.”

A 3D movie offers much more than an average movie with respect to overall viewing experience. But the pleasure of this experience can be hampered if the 3D glasses are of sub-standard quality or aren’t maintained regularly.

Twenty-nine-year-old training manager Mala Banerji, who saw the extravagant 3D movie at Big Cinemas at R City Mall, Ghatkopar, shares her woes, “The 3D glasses they gave were too big and were slipping off my face and I had to hold on to them throughout the movie.

Also, I could see through the gap between the glasses from either side, so it was distracting. This killed the movie for me as I couldn’t concentrate and you need to be totally engrossed in a movie like this to truly enjoy it.”

However, a source from 20th Century Fox, who did not wish to be named, rubbished the claims. “Our responsibility is restricted to delivering a clean finished product, which is what Avatar is. The 3D glasses and 3D projector is something that the exhibitors hire. It is their responsibility and they should take care to maintain them. Glasses need to be cleaned.

Defective glasses need to be replaced. If these precautions are not taken, you will have the odd complaint,” said the source.

Ekta Kapoor says the promo of her film Love Sex Dhoka is going to be the most controversial promos released this year. Incidentally, the 90-second promo of LSD will be released along with Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots in theatres across India on December 25.

Says Ekta, “We have already edited the 90-second promo thrice! When I first saw it, I was so shocked I fell off my chair. We had to edit almost 30 per cent of the controversial version in order for it to be shown with 3 Idiots. We will be releasing the unedited version on the internet simultaneously along with the trailer. The promo will be shown across only 290 multiplex screens across India. We didn’t want the promo to run at all theatres as it’s a digital medium.”

Ekta feels that it will be met with a largely polarised reaction. “It will shock the daylights out of people. They will either hate or love it but they can’t ignore it. The censor board was adamant that we couldn’t show these scenes without a U/A certificate.”

She adds, “The promo is not too sexually explicit but the dialogues and basic premise are raw and explicit. We had 40 beeps in the original promo which has now been cut down to two.”

Dibakar Banerjee says, “The censor board didn’t allow the promo to run without a U/A certificate. Some cuss words have been edited out. One of the scenes edited out is a slightly explicit scene where the male protagonist and another girl are rehearsing how to seduce a famous public figure on camera for a sting operation with some intricate moves. They found these objectionable and we had to remove them. Love Sex Dhoka is isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.”

Despite an ‘A’ certificate, the panel suggests major cuts in the film

Mahesh Nair, director of Celina Jaitly-Farooque Shaikh starrer Accident On Hill Road is a livid man. The Censor Board has objected to a one minute-50 second scene in his movie. The scene showing Celina and Abhimanyu Singh in bed making love has raised the eyebrows of the authorities making them chop some portions.

The film has been given an ‘A’ certificate, but Nair says the board isn’t playing fair. “In the recent past, there have been movies depicting violence and sex but that has gone unnoticed.”

Claiming that his love making scene is aesthetically shot he adds, “In fact, the portion they have raised objections to, doesn’t even have a liplock. Despite that they have problems with it.”

Describing the three issues the board has raised, Nair says, “Their first problem was that they objected to the lady removing her undergarments in the scene. However, Celina wears stockings that Abhimanyu removes before their lovemaking. I don’t think stockings are undergarments, and the board should understand that.

Secondly, they had an issue with too much caressing happening between the actors. They told me instead of touching each other why can’t they express their love by looking at each other, through their eyes! Lastly, they thought that one minute and 50 seconds was too long a time for the actors to establish a relation between the two. All these points are totally baseless and unwarranted.”

Furious that he has to go with the cut, Nair feels the board only picks on small budget films. “I don’t want to take names, but there have been so many films this year with enough liplocks and fight scenes depicting brutality which have made it without cuts, why give a different treatment to me?”

3 Idiots

What’s It About: Bring out the bugles for the biggest celluloid celebration in a long, long time. God bless Rajkumar Hirani for ending an otherwise mediocre Bollywood year on a smashing note.

You go in to see 3 Idiots expecting the genius combination of Hirani and Aamir Khan to weave magic on screen.

But despite the mental conditioning, the impact of the film is so overwhelming that it leaves you spellbound for hours after it has ended.

Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel, Five Point Someone (though only a miniscule part has been adapted from the book; the rest is all original), here’s a story of three friends studying in an engineering college Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan (R Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi).

Rancho is the rebel among them always questioning things and believing that learning is more than just the usual mode of education.

He encourages his friends to look beyond the ordinary and soon earns the wrath of the college director Viru Sahasrabuddhe (Boman Irani).

Despite his fun and frolic, Rancho always surprises everyone by topping the class. He even manages to win the affections of the director’s daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor). But Rancho’s greatest contribution lies is making his friends realise their true calling.

The twist comes when on Graduation Day. After being awarded the Student Of The Year title, Rancho mysteriously disappears into oblivion.

Years later, Farhan and Raju, finding a common thread, embark on a journey to find their friend. 3 Idiots is a story of friendship, hope, aspirations and most importantly, the goodness of life.

With 3 Idiots, Rajkumar Hirani proves beyond doubt that there’s no better storyteller than him in the present generation.

This isn’t an easy film to make the interplay between characters and the narrative is interestingly woven.

The film switches from present to flashback mode often but not once does Hirani lose the momentum. The medley of emotions that he brings forth as he establishes the film’s structure is indeed commendable.

Like the peppy Aal Izz Well song drawing towards a tragic climax it’s so cleverly done that it has the desired effect. There are scenes that’ll make you laugh, they’ll make you cry and they’ll make you think.

Hirani does it all so beautifully that you want to go back to college and relive all those moments.

The falling in love, the harassment by professors, the secret drinking sessions, the ragging of fellow students it’s all there.

Hirani also sends across a message on student pressures but there’s no preaching here it’s all done in his inimitable style.

Most films have their own set of ‘highlight’ scenes.

3 Idiots is different because every scene is special and brings with it something that’s out of the ordinary.

But there are a few that have a far lasting impact the entire ragging sequence; the camaraderie between Rancho and Pia; Chatur’s (the ‘brainy’ student) hilarious speech; the entire black-and-white depiction of Raju’s family; most of the scenes between Rancho and Viru; the sequences that lead to Raju’s recovery in the hospital and many more. After a point, you just stop counting.

Dialogues are snappy and totally effective (“In India, you get a pizza in 30 minutes guaranteed but not an ambulance”). The soundtrack, background score and cinematography is top class.

Among the performances, Madhavan delivers his most retrained act ever. He takes the film back and forth with his narrative and is splendid even with comedy.

Sharman Joshi is brilliant, especially in his breakdown scenes. Boman Irani is sincere as expected, with his lisp act getting all the right nuances.

Kareena Kapoor gives her finest portrayal in recent times as Pia. Her “dhokla, fafda, thepla, khandwa, khakra” scene is simply too delicious. Here’s a performance that proves why she’s indeed the best we have.

The life and soul of 3 Idiots is of course Aamir Khan. His perfection lies in the fact that he makes everything look so easy and spontaneous.

And at all the right moments, he brings the film alive with his sheer brilliance. From his look to his walk to his manner of speech, Aamir breathes life into Rancho and that’s what stays with us.

If you thought Aamir Khan couldn’t get any better than he is, think again. Aamir is the heart and soul of 3 Idiots and he proves why he’s simply a class apart.

What To Do: Book your tickets for consecutive shows because one viewing isn’t enough to savour 3 Idiots. Quite easily, this is the film of the year. Nothing else comes even close.

For Chance pe Dance, Shahid Kapoor gears up to live in a car for two full days. He even plans to have meetings inside it…

UTV Motion Pictures and director Ken Ghosh have come up with a unique idea to promote Chance pe Dance. The film’s lead actor, Shahid Kapoor, lives in the car through the major part of the film.

So the film’s marketing team decided to create a marketing strategy on similar lines.

Our source said, “Marketing the film is very important and everyone needs different ideas. It’s very difficult to convince Shahid to do something, but he approved of this idea. We will mostly be using an old Maruti 800, which Shahid has used in the film.

He will actually stay in the car and even have meetings inside the car. The event will take place in January, days before the film’s release.”

Chance pe Dance

Shikha Kapur, VP-Marketing of UTV Motion Pictures said, “Shahid is shown living out of his car in Chance pe Dance, so the idea of having him actually live in his car for two days did come up.

However, this is just one of the many plans for promoting the film and nothing has been finalised at the moment.”

Hrithik Roshan’s son Hrehaan was delighted when director Sanjay Leela Bhansali gifted him a video game console

Although Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known to be a strict disciplinarian on the sets, his love for kids is relatively unknown.  Recently, he gifted Hrithik Roshan’s son Hrehaan a 3D videogame console, Nintendo Wii.

A source says, “Sussanne Roshan drops in on the sets of Guzaarish quite often. She was even present with the kids at the outdoor schedule of the film in Goa. The director, who is close to his nieces and showers them with gifts, was often seen playing with Hrithik’s sons after pack-up. In no time, he grew extremely fond of both the kids.”

Talking about the reason for gifting, the source says, “Bhansali learnt that Hrehaan is fond of videogames and is keen on buying the new Nintendo Wii. Without wasting a single day, he ordered the game and gifted it to Hrehaan. Hrehaan was excited about receiving the unexpected gift and thanked Sanjay with a warm hug.”

It’s not just Hrehaan who loves to play the game, even Hrithik is hooked on to it. The source adds, “Hrithik, who is tech-savvy, is addicted to the new game. He plays the game with the kids whenever he is home.

Bhansali denied the story. However, a source close to Bhansali says, “Bhansali is extremely fond of Hrehaan and Hridhaan.When he learnt of their wish to buy a Nintendo Wii, he decided to gift it to them.”
