MAKING HER DREAMS COME TRUE: Esha Deol and (right) Hema Malini
She’s gifted her daughter three films on her birthday today

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; November 2, 2009)

The legendary actress is making not one, but three films for her daughter who has turned a year older today. To say that Hema Malini is crazy about her daughters Esha and Ahana Deol is an understatement. The doting mother has decided that on the occasion of Esha’s birthday today, she will host the mahurat of her film Tell Me Oh Khuda in which Esha teams up with Arjan Bajwa (Fashion) and Chandan Roy Saniyal (Kaminey). The film being directed by Mayur Puri (an associate on Dhoom) has an ensemble cast headed by Rishi Kapoor and a Turkish actress and it will go on the floors today. Hot shot music director Pritam, too, has agreed to give the score. An excited Hema said, “I guess this is the best birthday gift I could give Esha.” Flashing her million-dollar smile, the yesteryear dream girl said, “I’m not unduly ambitious for my daughters. I just want both Esha and Ahana to be happy and settled in their lives. But as a mother, I feel Esha hasn’t got her due and I definitely want the best for my child. Esha is young and I would like to fulfil her ambitions. I have also asked Ahana to step in and look after the production.”
So Hema’s banner, that fell silent after her directorial debut Dil Aashna Hai, is being revived in a major way. As soon she wraps up Tell Me Oh Khuda being shot by four world-class cinematographers in Turkey, Goa, Mumbai and Rajasthan, Hema and Esha will start work on their next film to be directed by Deepa Sahi.
Hema clarifies that Tell Me Oh Khuda is not a copy of Meryl Streep’s Mamma Mia. “It has four different stories with a common link line… but it is not even remotely connected to Mamma Mia. In fact, as yet I haven’t even got a role in Tell me… For the moment, I’m only involved as a producer. Honestly, how can I even think of doing Mamma Mia. I’m not in the same league as Meryl Streep,” she said very modestly.
The danseuse-actress however adds that the third film that she will make for Esha could be a musical because both of them are artistically inclined. “I may consider the possibility of making a film that involves dancing-singing in the plot line,” said Hema.

Abhishek Bachchan to play an undercover cop in Rohan Sippy’s forthcoming film which is based on real drug trafficking incidents in Goa

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 20, 2009)

Rohan Sippy’s untitled film takes a lead from a number of headlines about the alarming crime situation in Goa. According to sources, it’s a gritty film about a cop on a drug-busting mission in Goa – quite unlike the Abhishek Bachchan starrer Bluffmaster, which Rohan had earlier directed.

A source said, “Rohan and Abhishek are close friends. When they decided to work together again, they had many options, but they decided to swerve away from drama and romance and instead make a dark film based on real life incidents.”

The untitled film about drug trafficking in Goa will be largely shot on the beaches of Goa with Abhishek playing an undercover cop.

Sridhar Raghavan known for his realistic newspaper-inspired work is said to be heavily influenced by Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic. Meanwhile, Abhishek has been asked to study narcotic neurosis and criminal quirks to master the role of the cop.

The source added, “Abhishek has earlier played an undercover cop in the Dhoom series, but this is a different territory for him and also for Rohan Sippy. Abhishek is busy collecting as much data as he can get on drug dealing in Goa.”

When we asked Rohan Sippy about his forthcoming film, he said, “I’m unfortunately not at liberty to speak about it at the moment other than that we are working on a thriller written by Sridhar Raghavan, starring Abhishek.”

Hema Malini signs Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor to star in her second production starring daughter Esha Deol

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 06, 2009)

Hema Malini

Yesterday, we told you that Hema Malini is ready with her second production, starring her daughter Esha Deol and Arjan Bajwa as a romantic couple. News is that Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor will also star in the film, which is tentatively titled Tell Me Oh Khuda.

A source close to Hema said, “Hema has taken a long time to put this project in place. Besides Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor, another prominent actor will soon be added to the film’s cast.”

Since the story revolves around a girl (Esha) who is in search of her father, we asked if it is inspired by the 2008 Meryl Streep starrer Mamma Mia! The source replied. “Although the story is different from Mamma Mia!, people may still think that it is based on the Hollywood musical.”

Does Hema Malini play Esha’s mother in Tell Me Oh Khuda? “Hema might be part of the film. She is not yet sure whether she wants to only produce it or also act in it,” said the source.

Hema’s film will be directed by newcomer Mayur Puri, who was the associate director for Yash Raj Films’ Dhoom. The film’s music will be composed by Pritam.

Hema Malini’s long awaited production for daughter Esha finally sees the light of day

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 05, 2009)

The long-in-the-pipeline film, which Hema Malini wanted to produce for her daughter, Esha is finally taking shape.

Tentatively titled Tell Me Oh Khuda, the film will have a girl (Esha) in search of her father. Arjan Bajwa will play the role of her supportive boyfriend.

Hema Malini with Esha

The subject seems uncannily similar to Hema’s first and only directorial venture, Dil Aashna Hai where Divya Bharati played a girl in search of her mother. Shah Rukh Khan had played the supportive boyfriend in the earlier film.

Arjan, who is thrilled to be working in Hema’s film, says, “When we met I was numb. I just stared at her (Hema). When she told me she liked my work in Fashion I was on cloud nine. Of course, I immediately agreed to do the film. It is Esha’s relaunch.”

The film will be directed by Mayur Puri who wrote the dialogue for Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om. Puri was also the associate director for Dhoom. That’s when Mayur first met Esha and her mother. Tell Me Oh Khuda is now in the pre-production stage and is expected to go on the floors by the end of this year.

Sanjay Gadhvi to revive his shelved film, 7 Days in Paris, with a new star cast
By Ruhail Amin (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 24, 2009)

After hitting the big time by directing expensive films like Dhoom and Dhoom 2 for Yash Raj Films, Sanjay Gadhvi’s career seems to be in a downward spiral. After reports of Gadhvi’s much talked about film, 7 Days in Paris with Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif getting shelved, the latest is that the director has decided to go ahead with the film sans any big star.

Gadhvi, who is known for making big budget and stylised films, is making a different attempt this time. According to sources, “After his project with Imran Khan failed to materialise, Gadhvi has decided to go ahead with the project with a completely new cast. Even the budget of the film will not be more than Rs 3 crore now. The fireworks Gadhvi showcased in his Dhoom series will also be missing in this film.”

Ever since he moved away from the YRF camp, Gadhvi has been struggling to deliver a hit. His last film, Kidnap bombed. There was also speculation about him directing Dhoom 3 but that is not happening.

When we spoke to Sanjay about his low budget remake of 7 Days in Paris with a new cast, he chose to reply with a “no  comments”.

The sequel to Partner is allegedly stuck due to lack of a good script; Salman, Govinda dates wasted
By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 31, 2009)

Salman Khan and Sohail Khan

David Dhawan’s Partner may be a brand name on par with Golmaal and Dhoom. But while Golmaal and Dhoom are racing to the third segment of their franchise, Partner is still stuck for a sequel as a good script plays truant.

First, Katrina Kaif decided not to be a part of the sequel, thus putting the film on the backburner. And now it seems unlikely that Partner 2 will see the light in the near, or even distant future.

Although the dates were locked in for the two main actors (Govinda and Salman), for the second half of this year, David Dhawan has failed to come up with an idea that would take the Partner brand further. A source says, “Salman and producer Sohail Khan were very keen to start Partner 2 .They had even locked in the dates. But the idea that David came up with didn’t appeal to them.”

Vipul Shah is taking every legal precaution to safeguard his next film, Action Replay; makes copycat Pritam sign an anti-plagiarism indemnity
By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 15, 2009)

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshay Kumar

Pritam may be hot property in Bollywood, but he got there with a little ‘help’ from other bands that he has generously ‘borrowed’ from. Now his past is coming back to bite him as he has made his producer Vipul Shah wary, lest he lands the producer into legal tangles. As a safeguard, Vipul has made Pritam sign an indemnity clause for the music of his film Action Replay, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshay Kumar. This is virtually unheard of in an industry that is particularly lax about copyright infringement.

Vipul Shah has become very cautious about derivative material in his films especially after his victory in court against Shree Venkatesh Films who have been accused of lifting material from Namastey London for a Bengali film, Poran Jai Joliya Re. To avoid any potential disasters that might blow up in his face with his next film, Action Replay, the filmmaker is not taking any chances. Given Pritam’s track record, the composer is quite the candidate who is likely to trigger the explosion.

Vipul confirmed, “I have taken a written indemnity from our music composer Pritam that not a single song in Action Replay is a copy. How will I know if he takes something from a Chinese, Taiwanese or Syrian song?”

In fact, the written indemnity says that Pritam will be solely responsible for his compositions and that the filmmaker/ producer will not be liable if his compositions are found not to be original. With no stringent laws in place to check copyright infringement, people like Pritam have been getting away with plagiarism repeatedly.

Pritam said, “I have no problem signing the indemnity as it every producer’s responsibility to make sure that every aspect of his film is fool-proof. However, I do feel the producer shouldn’t always be blamed if any aspect of the film is accused of plagiarism. For instance, if there is an accusation that the film’s story is directly lifted from some other piece of art, then the writer should take responsibility for this. Same goes for other branches of filmmaking.”

Strangely enough, the Bengali filmmakers have accused Vipul of plagiarising a Hollywood film to make his forthcoming film, Action Replay. Vipul’s office has been working round-the-clock to prepare a voluminous defence against the charge that Action Replay is a remake of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Meanwhile, a few people who have seen portions of Action Replay claim that the film bears no similarity to Benjamin Button and is actually a take-off on HG Wells’s The Time Machine.
