What do you call someone whose eyes control the sunrise and the moon shine? What do you call who is the inspiration to many a poet globally? What do you call someone who is highly intellectual, yet is a part of an ‘Idiotic’ gang? Well, mince no names, as we are indeed talking about the one and only ‘Oomph-mati’ that the silver screen has ever seen: Kareena Kapoor!

Kareena Kapoor
And it is the very same Kareena Kapoor who is on the cover of the widely read magazine GQ for the month (January 2010). What a way to start the New Year by having the eternal glowing Miss Kapoor as the cover-girl! From the looks of it, Kareena looks nothing short of being Miss Perfect. Well, we are no one to challenge perfection, are we? All that we can say is that; do watch out for Kareena’s honest-than-thou confessional statements on topics ranging from films, marriage and of course…Saif, about whom she says “Saif comes from a very cultured background; he is a man of the world. And he’s seen so much of life; he’s got his head very firmly on his shoulders. I can connect with this guy. He has a good sense of humour; a charming man with a lot of culture. He always liked me on screen. He said I was someone he always wanted to meet.”

Keeping the tradition of ‘Keep the best for last’, we really do have to mention that this issue of GQ has not one, but two whoppingly sizzling covers, which only means, twice the cover, twice the fun. Kareena is indeed the way to go this season and for the year 2010!

The biggest hits of their career were NEVER meant to be theirs

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; January 2, 2010)

You talk to any film director and he’ll give you gyaan on how such and such actor is in the film because he/she fit the casting to the ‘t’.

Yet, the reality of the matter is something else. It is usually who is available; and sometimes who is more saleable.

Take the latest: Aamir Khan was never meant to be playing the idiot in his latest film. It was to be Shah Rukh Khan. Since SRK and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra had a difference of opinion, the Bollywood Badshah was replaced by Aamir. And while the rest is history, there are innumerable such examples in the film industry.

History knows that Amitabh Bachchan was not Prakash Mehra’s first choice for Zanjeer. It was meant to be Dev Anand or Raaj Kumar. When both actors said no, the Big B stepped in. Jaya Bachchan even thanked Dev saab for refusing the Zanjeer role. The film gave her — her real life husband and it gave Bollywood one of its most revered screen couples.

Today you wonder how Dev saab would ever have fit into the angry young man mould. But that’s an after-thought.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee wanted Raj Kapoor to play Anand. When he couldn’t, Hrishida sent for Shashi Kapoor but Rajesh Khanna wormed his way in. And till today Anand is synonymous with the 70s phenomenon.

Shatrughan Singh continues to smart that it was he who was to be Jai in the Jai-Veeru jodi of Sholay but because he was riding a crest of super-success then, he didn’t want to do a twohero film. Amitabh Bachchan got the role instead.
Aamir had been pencilled in for Yash Chopra’s Darr but at that point he ‘accused’ Yash of playing games. And SRK made a permanent place for himself in the YRF camp.
Ajay Devgn was to play Karan in Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun. But he was ousted by politics and next thing you know is that Salman Khan was in. Till today Karan Arjun remains one of the biggest hits of Bollywood and Salman’s career. And it may become film history because he and bete noire are unlikely to star in a movie again.

Saif Ali Khan had qualms about playing a pansy in Dostana so John Abraham was brought in. John got male and female temperatures rising with this fun flick and is now a part of its sequel.

Kareena Kapoor asked for too much money for Kal Ho Na Ho; result — Preity Zinta landed this memorable film. Shah Rukh was meant to be playing Munnabhai but since he walked out after some miscommunication, Sanjay Dutt became Munna. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was in Chalte Chalte till Salman dropped in as an uninvited guest forcing SRK to call Rani Mukerji to replace her… and Rekha and Jaya would never have had their screen face-off in Silsila had Parveen Babi and Smita Patil done their roles.

Unlike real history, reel history is often made by default.

MINAKSHI SAHNI (Hindustan Times; December 21, 2009)

https://i0.wp.com/www.hindustantimes.com/images/HTEditImages/Images/Aamir-3Idiots.jpgAamir Khan may be going to town calling himself an idiot in a bid to promote his upcoming movie, but if the producers of 3 idiots and Delhi’s multiplex owners have their way, it is the moviegoer who may end up feeling like an idiot. With one of the most anticipated movies of the year set to hit theatres on Christmas, multiplex owners have decided to hike ticket prices for the movie by as much as 35 per cent. In short, a movie outing for four, which would otherwise cost Rs 600-800, would rob you by nearly Rs 2,000!

Reap when ripe
“We are looking at an increase of 20-30 per cent on weekdays and 35 per cent on the weekends across all our properties,” says Deepak Taluja of Fun Cinemas, explaining that multiplexes can increase ticket prices only twice a year and they look forward to the release of much awaited films to maximise on the opportunity. “Distributors approached us with this idea. So for 3 idiots, whose booking opens on Wednesday, we have increased our morning show price by 33 per cent with a marginal increase in others,” adds Rehan Ahmad of SRS Cinemas. PVR Cinemas and Satyam Cineplex while confirming an increase in ticket prices for 3 idiots, refused to divulge the exact hike, saying their management would meet to decide.

All izz not well
Shocked at the prospect of shelling out anywhere between Rs 350-1,000 (gold class) for a single ticket, youngsters are already feeling the pinch. “You can’t be sucking money just because the movie is highly anticipated,” says communication consultant Pupul Sinha, 26. College goers, who prefer the morning shows, are equally annoyed. “We are the worst hit of the lot,” says Fine Arts student Mahima Saraswat.

“Are we idiots? Who will pay so much, no matter how good a film is?” asks engineering student Mohit Sahni raising another vital point. “By doing this, they are inviting people to opt for the pirated version,” he adds.

The film’s producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, when contacted, said, “Talk to the cinema halls as I have no say in it.” But a source from the production revealed, “3 Idiots is a film people won’t mind shelling extra money for. That’s the strategy behind this decision.”

It is going to pinch
A morning show ticket usually costs Rs 50-75. The price may go well above Rs 150 – 200.

Gold Class tickets in PVRs may go up from Rs 850 to Rs 1000.

Multiplexes had increased their prices marginally when Om Shanti Om, Ghajini and Kambakkht Ishq had released.

While multiplexes are looking to hike ticket prices, single screen theatres want to counter this by going ahead with same prices [Rs 70-80 for Balcony, Rs 50-60 for Rear Stall and Rs 20-40 for the Front Stall]. Says RK Malhotra of Delite, “It is going to be unfair on the audience and secondly it is a win-win situation for us.” “The film is meant for college students, so a price hike would affect business negatively,” says Kishan of Sheila cinema.

Aamir made a dig at Shah Rukh at the Mumbai airport on Sunday by slyly hinting that the latter’s detention at the US airport was a publicity stunt

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 15, 2009)

Aamir Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

People thought that the war between the two superstars, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, was over after they came together on a common platform for the multiplex issue. But it’s never as simple as that. On Sunday night, Aamir Khan made another dig at Shah Rukh when he returned to Mumbai after vacationing in France.

An eye witness present at the international airport says, “When Aamir walked in late on Sunday night, he was approached for an  interview by a TV reporter. Since Aamir had returned from France, the reporter wanted to know whether, he too, like SRK, was stopped at international airports and interrogated for being a Khan. That’s when Aamir retorted that such checks are a routine matter. He also added tongue-in-cheek that, ‘No one checks me as I am an idiot’, obviously referring to his forthcoming film, 3 Idiots. Then he went on to add that SRK had a problem as he is very intelligent. Aamir’s obvious reference means that the fuss created by SRK about being stopped at the airports was a mere publicity stunt. Now it remains to be seen when SRK will respond.”

This war of words has been raging for long between the two stars, with Shah Rukh and Aamir regularly taking potshots at each other. However, when the film industry got together for the multiplex issue, the two Khans forgetting their differences, came together on the same platform to express their solidarity. But now, again, Aamir’s dig at SRK has set tongues wagging in the film industry about the so-called bonhomie between the two superstars.

Incidentally, Salman Khan had also made similar comments about SRK on the same issue by saying that everyone has to go through these routine security checks at international airports, so what’s the big deal?
