Kareena Kapoor The likes of Imtiaz Ali, Rajkumar Santoshi, Vishal Bhardwaj, Balki and Prabhu Deva must be feeling disheartened. If only Rajkumar Hirani, Aamir Khan and Co. would have released 3 Idiots a week later, the competition was just amongst the five of them for Love Aaj Kal, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Kaminey, Paa and Wanted respectively. However, due to the fact that 3 Idiots is a fantastic experience for millions of cine-goers and above all is pretty much fresh in audiences mind, it is the unanimous choice for one and all. Whether it is ‘aam junta’ or industry alike, there is no negative word around this movie. Instead, it has been universally hailed, acclaimed, appreciated and above all respected, which has proved once again that if a film is really well made, all bad blood is forgotten, all negative vibes are kept aside and all competition stays a distance away. Over to the Bollywood folks who (keeping certain exceptions aside) truly believe that 3 Idiots is the film of 2009.

Kareena Kapoor3 Idiots was the best film of 2009.

Sajid Khan – Best movie of the year was Avatar. Reason? It was not a film but an experience.

Shirish Kunder – For the sheer sincerity with which it has been made, 3 Idiots is simply the best by leaps and bound. Aamir has once again proved that he is the ISI mark of good cinema.

Piyush Jha3 Idiots was the best film that 2009 had to offer because it took a very relevant issue and banged home the point. Moreover, the icing on the cake was that it was thoroughly entertaining.

Kalki Koechlin Kalki – Best film of 2009 was Kaminey because it’s a furious and an intelligent film with great performances and music.

Aanand L Rai – For me the best movie in 2009 is 3 Idiots. It boasted of a brilliant screenplay and direction.

Suneel Darshan – 2009 ended on a positive note with two movies – Paa and 3 Idiots. Paa displayed refined performances by Mr. Bachchan and Vidya Balan. On the other hand 3 Idiots is a sincere attempt at entertainment with a soul.

Hasnain Hyderabadwaala – I enjoyed watching Wanted most. It was after a long time that I saw a complete masala film. Total paisa wasool!

Ramesh Taurani – Of course I believe that Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani was the best film of 2009. But so have been 3 Idiots, Paa, Wake Up Sid and Love Aaj Kal. All these films have been hugely entertaining.

Robby Grewal – It’s a one horse race – 3 Idiots.

Sadaa3 idiots was surely the best film of 2009. It was a complete film as it lacked nothing. Moreover, there was some very good message being delivered in an entertaining format.

Vaishali Desai Vaishali Desai – I loved both Avatar and 3 Idiots. Both films belonged to completely different genres. Avatar boasted of some breathtaking special effects and it was an entirely new experience. Whereas 3 Idiots is yet another cult film about the education system from Mr. Hirani.

Raksha Mistry – Call it ironical but the best of 2009 came at the very end. Yes, I am talking about 3 Idiots which is not just the best of 2009 but also one of the finest movies ever in all aspects.

Boney Kapoor – I have heard great things about 3 Idiots but I haven’t seen it yet. Of course Wanted was a complete package as it brought back the concept of hero, something which was in vogue years back when Amitabh Bachchan used to play such characters. Somehow such cinema had become extinct. Amongst other films, I also loved Love Aaj Kal. It’s entire approach was very fresh and everybody performed well. Its music was superb. The film was as mainstream as it gets and was a good blend of the old charm and new thinking. Even Paa was quite exciting. After a really long time came an Amitabh Bachchan film where he could showcase his talent. It was a neat and clean movie that really moved me. Moreover, in spite of having a sad tale on the surface, it was tackled in a very lighter vein. It reminded me of Hrisihikesh Mukherjee at his peak. Watching the film gave me the same feeling as I had when I watched Anand. Since Amitabh Bachchan’s effort didn’t show in the film, that itself reflects that how great an actor he is. Really, Imtiaz and Balki are two filmmakers to look out for. From Hollywood, it was Avatar all the way. I can’t think of a better movie visually. In fact it would take a really long time for anyone to match it technically; it has surpassed all films where technical wizardry and visual appeal is concerned. All the special effects have been taken to a different level altogether with Avatar.

Ken Ghosh – I am on a jury for an award, so I can’t really quote around the best or the worst of the year

Rohit Shetty – Best film of the year is 3 Idiots for sure. It makes you feel so good and happy after watching it.

Jagmohan Mundhra3 Idiots was the best movie of 2009.

Tanushree Dutta Tanushree Dutta – For me, the best films of 2009 would be 3 Idiots and Avatar.

Ruslaan MumtazKaminey was the best film of the year along with 3 Idiots

Sujoy Ghosh – I haven’t seen 3 Idiots but I’ll go with Paa. It’s a film which made me feel very good about life. It’s a film which took some of my fears away. It’s a film which taught me to look at different things normally. I really appreciated that. It’s a film which didn’t try to squeeze my balls for emotions. And of course Mr. Bachchan, Vidya, Balki, Illayaraja and P.C. Sreeram made it all possible.

Sophie Choudry – According to me, 2009 was filled with below par cinema both in Hollywood and Bollywood. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed 3 Idiots, Kaminey and Paa. They were all brilliantly made films.

Urvashi SharmaBaabarr is one of my favourite films from 2009 but I think 3 Idiots has broken all the records and is the best Hindi film of the year. From Hollywood, I loved both The Hangover and Avatar.

Kunal Deshmukh – I loved Avatar because it educates us to think ahead and learn so much. And of course 3 Idiots, as we all know today, is a fabulous movie. It brought home a message without shoving it down your throat.

Tusshar Kapoor Ananth Mahadevan – Though Paa and 3 Idiots are what I would define as ideal mainstream cinema (they made cine-going a pleasure after what seemed ages), if one has to select a film, my choice would be Nandita Das’ Firaaq. The four stories were moving accounts of the aftermath of human folly fuelled by political insanity. The critical eye may pick a few bones of contention, but the film was relevant, urgent, well enacted and most importantly, credibly treated.

Tusshar Kapoor – Which movie is best for me in 2009? Obviously, there is going to be just one answer – 3 Idiots.

Bollywood’s Kapoor dilemma

The Kapoors, the first family of Bollywood, have been known for some truly incestuous screen combinations. Shashi Kapoor has romanced both his brother Raj’s daughters-in-law — Babita Shivdasani-Kapoor in Haseena Man Jayegi in 1968 and Neetu Singh-Kapoor in Deewar in 1975, and Randhir Kapoor has also romanced his sister-in-law (bhabhi) Neetu Singh in a couple of movies like Rickshawalla in 1973 and Kasme Vaade and Heeralal Pannalal in 1978. By sheer virtue of the fact that all the Kapoor family members have ruled the roost at some time or the other, filmmakers couldn’t help but cast them in the romantic lead opposite each other.

The same dilemma has come back to haunt two major filmmakers now. Rumours have it that Sajid Nadiadwala, who is making his next film Anjaana Anjaani with Bollywood’s current heartthrob Ranbir and Priyanka Chopra, was heard telling an insider from the Kareena Kapoor camp that he would have ideally liked to work with Bebo and Ranbir. But, of course, since they are first cousins the pair would get audience rejection.

It is also reported that the Mehtas of Ashtavinayak will go on the floors with their film directed by Imtiaz Ali with Ranbir on April 1, 2010. Once again, this banner that loves Bebo because she is their Jab We Met heroine, wanted her in the lead. However, since they have had to choose between Ranbir and Kareena — both of whom are the current hot favourites — they have chosen to cast Ranbir.

But Bebo is not entirely at a disadvantage. There is a third film corporation that wants to cast her with the light-eyed youngster Imran Khan, who is another Bollywood hottie.

Ranbir Kapoor, one of today’s most happening young stars is all set to go from scrawny to brawny. After five releases where Ranbir has maintained an extremely thin physique, he will now be seen flaunting a more muscular and manly look as his roles get more mature.

Evidently, both, Siddharth Anand’s Anjana Anjani and Imtiaz Ali’s next film, due to start shooting after March, require this of him.

Says a source, “Both the characters require Ranbir to play a man and not a boy. In all his films so far he has played a boy just stepping into maturity and facing the hardships of life. In Anjana Anjani he plays a man on the move and must match his physical appearance with Priyanka Chopra who’s chronologically older than Ranbir and therefore automatically perceived to be older than him by the audience.”

In Imtiaz Ali’s film too Ranbir, for the first time, plays an intense lover.

Ranbir has changed his exercising regime in the gym and is now doing a training that would build his muscles.

Says Ranbir, “Yes I am beefing up my physique for next year. Change is good, don’t you think?”

Shahid Kapoor’s know-it-all attitude during the making of Chance Pe Dance has soured his relationship with director Ken Ghosh, who was also the actor’s close friend

Six years ago Shahid Kapoor and director Ken Ghosh were buddies when they first worked together in Ishq Vishk. Their friendship was going strong even when Ken made his second film with Shahid, Fida (2004). Much has changed today and the camaraderie between the two has ended.

A source from the sets of the forthcoming Shahid starrer Chance Pe Dance, directed by Ken, said, “Everything was hunky dory when Chance Pe Dance (earlier titled Yahoo) went on the floors. The film took a long time to complete as the shooting was stalled when Jiah Khan was replaced by Genelia D’Souza. Meanwhile, as Shahid starred in a few films and grew in popularity, his attitude with the people he had known over the years took a turn for the worse. Many of his friends and colleagues were shocked at his changed behaviour. Ken too was shocked but he somehow took it in his stride and completed the film.”

Commenting on the bone of contention between Shahid and Ken, the source said, “Shahid was working with prominent directors like Imtiaz Ali (Jab We Met), Aziz Mirza (Kismat Connection), Yash Raj Films (Dil Bole Hadippa), Vishal Bhardwaj (Kaminey) while Chance Pe Dance was being made. Gradually, he started believing that he knew more than Ken because of which he started interfering a lot in the making of Ken’s film. Consequently, the two had their share of differences, which ultimately snowballed into serious issues.”

Throwing more light on the soured relationship between Shahid and Ken, the source added, “Actually, quite a few film industrywallahs are aware of the differences between Shahid and Ken in the recent past. It’s just that nobody talks about it and Shahid and Ken too are not very vocal about their issues.”

When we asked Ken about his changed equation with Shahid, he said, “When Ishq Vishk released, Shahid was 22. Today, he is 28. There is bound to be a change.”

Filmmakers who want to cast hotties Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor together will have to wait for a long time. While the two buddies are on the most-wanted list of top filmmakers, the two hunks have an altogether different plan, which is not only the perfect way to cash in on their popularity but also makes great business sense.

Apart from Karan Johar, Ranbir and Imran were also in advanced talks with Zoya Akhtar who has been keen to cast them together in her forthcoming film. The latest news is that although they loved Zoya’s script, they are no longer part of her film as they want to first star together in their own production, which they will start soon. According to sources, they want their real-life camaraderie to shine on screen for the first time in their film.

The film is being made by Excel Entertainment. Imran and Ranbir often meet to discuss promising ideas despite their busy schedules.

Our source said, “Zoya had approached Imran and Ranbir to star in her new film. Farhan Akhtar had already agreed to be a part of the film and Ranbir-Imran too had loved the script. Ranbir had made up his mind to star in the film. Imran loved his role and was more or less convinced about it. However, Ranbir and Imran eventually decided that if they have to star together it should first be a film which will be produced by them. Imran and Ranbir will soon produce a film together for which they have had discussions with a couple of directors, Imtiaz Ali being one of them. They politely declined Zoya’s offer. She has now finalised Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol in place of Imran and Ranbir. Zoya can’t wait to start shooting as the script is brilliant.”

Zoya Akhtar said, “I am still writing my script. I will think about my film’s cast only after I am done with the script. I don’t want to say anything more.”

What tempts you to do a film?

When I got married way back in 1968, my decision was to cut down on films but never give up. The very act of getting married means that you are not alone, you are taking on a family. In those days it could take two-three years to make a film. Now, we work on one film at a time, which is the ideal way to work. That’s how regional films are made.

I am turned on by a good script and a good role and I don’t judge a good role by its length. When you start doing character roles, it gives you a liberating feeling because you are no longer victim to looking good and you can then freely be the character.

I would love to do those characters with today’s directors like Vishal Bharadwaj or Raju Hirani. Imtiaz Ali obviously makes films about two young people in love but if he ever has a role for elderly people I would love to do it.Samantar offered all this?

In Samantar, although my character, Shama, is a recluse, she doesn’t go by social compulsions but by natural compulsions which is about being herself. Being herself means gardening, being close to nature, she creates beautiful pottery, she plays the violin. But in the company of people she isn’t herself. I chose this role because it is not a very verbose character so there is minimal dialogue except that I do have a three-page soliloquy.

Amol is a very sensitive director, and there is beautiful camera work, beautiful locations, and very competent and talented actors who play the smaller supporting characters. We shot at this place called Kalna which even the Bengali directors haven’t discovered. It’s a place of archeological importance. It’s a terracotta Shiv temple dating back 300 years, it has 108 Shivlings white and black.

The music by Anand Modak is excellent, Shomit’s lyrics are excellent.

Why did it take you so long to take on a Marathi film?

Because nobody asked me so far. Amol was the first one who came with a Marathi proposal. I have been seeing Shashikalaji’s performances, Dr Mohan Agashe is a dear friend and I have always had the highest regard for Marathi actors because like in Bengal, they are all very good actors. If we can see Iranian films and Chinese films, why can’t we see our own regional films?

Doesn’t every language have its own meter and isn’t it difficult to adjust?

Bengali and Marathi have the same meter. Pauses, breaks and emphasis are the same. It’s just that some alphabets are pronounced differently.

So, is your character alone or lonely?

She chooses to be alone, but is not lonely. Like I said, she does not follow social compulsions. She is alright with herself, true to her own being and to her nature.

When you are alone, not enjoying yourself, are resentful and wanting company and when you don’t get company you feel deprived, that is being lonely. I would take loneliness in a negative sense. Somewhere in our souls we are all alone. To be alone I think is wonderful, that is when you can introspect, grow or evolve and that is a very positive thing. To be alone and doing your own thing, listening to music, exercising, looking at a beautiful flower, swimming in the sea or walking alone in the hills, it’s a wonderful healing process. When you are doing yoga you aren’t doing it to impress anybody, you are doing it for yourself. That is a healing and growing process. That is the difference between loneliness and being alone.

Which three Hindi films would you list as most memorable?

I would say Safar with Asit Sen, Dooriyan with Bhimsain and Mausam. Safar and Dooriyan were the two films where I follow an individual goal as a woman. Usually all women put the family before and sacrifice for them. These two women want to follow their careers and are therefore misunderstood. Indian films should have professional women because the moment you become a working woman, you are  a negative character, you are the cause of divorce. Children should feel, ‘I have a working mother’ and look at it with added value as opposed to that she is working woman, she must be neglecting her children.

The change is happening…

It needs to change more. Look at the disparity between the hero’s salary and the heroine’s.

What did you think of Saif in the Kal part of Love Aaj Kal?

It’s written very well, and Saif is very good, specially in the Kal part. Whatever he does, pulls his shirt in front, the earnestness, he does it very well. He is one of those very spontaneous actors. When he interacts with others, the screen looks good, not that he outsmarts the others. He doesn’t interact with his audience, he interacts with his co-stars. Therefore his scenes are very real and I think he is becoming a wonderful actor.

You are set to have a celebrity daughter-in-law soon ( Kareena Kapoor). How will it affect family dynamics?

I don’t think it changes anything. She also comes from a film background and we come from various fields. One extra person comes in and things change, but it’s for the better. You have to grow, everything grows.
