Ram Gopal Varma Ramgopal Varma thinks out of the box. When it comes to movies or story concepts or even casting actors, RGV has never followed rules. Now here’s more on this maverick film-maker. While everyone may’ve received the standard new year messages from family and friends, the one sent by RGV catches you by complete surprise.

Let me quote the message verbatim: “Since we never ever really learn anything from the old years that have gone by and yet we stupidly keep on wishing each other a happy new year and this we keep on doing year after year, inspite of knowing that last year’s new year wishes didn’t give us even an iota of extra happiness ever and also none of us ever believe even for one second that neither our wishes nor anybody’s wishes will never ever amount to our’s or anybody’s happiness ever, I hereby declare that I am not going to wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR!”

RGV’s new year greetings are a shocker as well, right?

Actor Sakshi Tanwar decides to move behind the camera, is now Creative Consultant for Samman: Ek Adhikar

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 05, 2010)

For all those who have been wondering what Sakshi Tanwar is up to these days, here is the dope. Saakshi, who had disappeared from the television scene after playing Parvati in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, has moved ahead in her professional life. She has become the Creative Consultant of the show, Samman: Ek Adhikar.

Interestingly, the channel which broadcasts Samman…, has stopped most of its other weekly shows. Naturally, the TRPs of Samman Ek Adhikar are satisfying enough for the channel to have retained it as one of their few shows.

A source (name withheld on request) from the production house, says, “Sakshi’s presence on the show is one of the main reasons why Samman… is doing well. Her degree of involvement in the show is very high. Sakshi is primarily responsible for the twists and turns in the storyline. She also visits the sets very often.”

Associate Creative of Samman Ek Adhikar, Lavesh Ahairajani confirmed the news. He says, “As the head of the creative team on our show, Sakshi brings in a lot of energy. She is the answer to all our day-to-day problems. She has even come up with very catchy dialogue on the spur of the moment.”

Despite repeated attempts, Sakshi Tanwar remained unavailable for comment.

Anurag Kashyap finds an unusual hero to play a serial killer for the second film of the Mumbai trilogy – Nawazuddin aka Patna Presley of Emosonal Attyachaar

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 05, 2010)

Anurag Kashyap’s much talked-about Mumbai trilogy has found its third and final hero. While Aamir Khan stars in the first film, John Abraham will play the lead in the third. Now, the little-known but talented Nawazuddin who gave sterling cameo performances in 2009 in Nandita Das’s Firaaq, Kabir Khan’s New York, Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D (one of the two Patna Presleys singing Emosonal Attyachaar) and Black Friday, has been pencilled in as the lead in Kashyap’s second film in the Mumbai trilogy. It’s a huge leap for an actor from a village near Delhi.

More startling than his casting is the character that Nawazuddin plays. He plays Raman Raghav, India’s most brutal serial killer. In 1968, Raghav bludgeoned a number of pavement dwellers to death before he was caught and diagnosed with schizophrenia. (Sriram Raghavan has, in fact, made a documentary on the serial killer.)

Nawazuddin has been secretly reading up on Raman Raghav and looking at footage of the killer. When we spoke to him, Nawazuddin was taken aback. He said, “Anurag has asked me to keep it absolutely quiet. Yes, I’m playing the serial killer Raman Raghav in Anurag Kashyap’s film. It’s the biggest challenge of my career especially since superstars like Aamir and John feature in the other two films of the series.”

Nawazuddin, who has been trying to make a mark as an actor in Bollywood since 1996, has played the lead in Aamir Khan’s Peepli Live and Mangesh’s Dekh Circus too. Says the actor emotionally, “I’ve waited very long for this. I’ve struggled hard to get out of playing the cameo to the lead. Mumbai trilogy is my greatest challenge.”

Akshay Kumar’s make-up man Narendra dada treated Arjun Rampal for his slip disc problem

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 05, 2010)

Arjun Rampal had a tough time during the shooting of Houseful as he had a major slip disc problem. However, he got back on his feet after being treated by co-star Akshay Kumar’s make-up man, Narendra dada, popularly known as make-up dada.

Arjun Rampal

Talking about Narendra, director Sajid Khan says, “Not many people know about him but Akshay’s make-up dada is amazing. He knows some therapy and treats people in a jiffy. When Arjun had a slip disc, he was in terrible pain. Dada instantly did something and made him feel better. It was nice to see him shoot normally after dada tried his therapy on him.”

Confirming the news, Arjun says, “I had a major slip disc problem and Narendra dada did acupressure on me. It gave me a lot of relief. He is a sweet gentleman and took good care of me. Although I had to have bed rest and take some shots in my back to be on my feet again, he helped me get mobilised. I am still undergoing physiotherapy.”

The dusky actor has made Mumbai her home – and Subodh Maskara her husband

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 05, 2010)

There aren’t very many Delhi-based Bollywood actors, but Nandita Das certainly figured high on the list. Even Aamir Khan – her co-star in 1947 Earth – had tried to convince her to move from Delhi to Mumbai to pursue her acting career, but she held strong. Now, Nandita has finally made Mumbai her home, post her recent marriage to environment entrepreneur Subodh Maskara.

Confirming the news, she sighs, “What I resisted doing for 13 long years has finally been done. I couldn’t imagine shifting to Mumbai for my career, but love did it.”

Nandita Das and Subodh Maskara

Subodh was introduced to Nandita by her friend Shahana Goswami (whom she directed last year in Firaq) and her boyfriend Milind Soman. “Milind and Shahana kept urging me to meet Subodh. But I’m the last person to believe in blind dates. But look at destiny, now I completely believe in instant love. When I was hesitant about meeting him, Subodh sent me a lovely e-mail. And I said, ‘Why not? Just have coffee with him?’ So we met. And immediately I knew this was it. Within five months of meeting him, I knew I wanted to marry him. We became soul mates seamlessly,” she recalls.

Nandita and Subodh got married according to Ashram Vidhi rites on January 2 at Subodh’s residence in Worli, which is now their marital home. “Only our parents – his parents and brother, my parents and my brother were there for the marriage. And of course, Shahana and Milind, who brought us together. We couldn’t possibly get married without them,” adds Nandita.

Meanwhile, friends like Paresh Rawal have been urging Nandita to direct another film. However, at the moment, she is content playing Mrs Nandita Maskara at her new home in Mumbai. So does she cook for her husband? Nandita gasps, “That would really be going too far, even further than my move from Delhi to Mumbai.”

Priyanka Chopra wants to be cast opposite Abhishek Bachchan again, extends the olive branch through messages to Rohan Sippy

By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 05, 2010)

Priyanka Chopra is a sharp woman with a firm business head on her shoulders. Knowing that her jodi with Abhishek Bachchan had proved to be popular, she sees no reason to let a little tiff come in the way of another hit together. So, she has decided to extend the olive branch to Bachchan Jr. The actress has been sending feeler messages to Rohan Sippy to be cast in his next opposite Abhishek Bachchan.

The Abhishek-Priyanka jodi became quite a hit in Rohan Sippy’s Bluffmaster. The duo worked in a couple of movies thereafter and was appreciated. But it may be recalled that the friendly bonding between the two had been strained last year at a film award event when the two wanted to dance to the same number and a misunderstanding ensued.

Abhishek, who had even jokingly called Priyanka his heartthrob on national television in the past, hadn’t taken kindly to Priyanka’s obstinate behaviour at the event, and thereafter the two never crossed paths again.

A source reveals, “Priyanka has sent feelers to Rohan and is keen to work on this project. She has heard the gist of the script and she liked it. Moreover, Abhishek Bachchan’s presence has attracted her to the film. She finds him fabulous as an actor and loves their on-screen pairing.”

The director, of course, takes the diplomatic route. Rohan says, “I would definitely love to work with Priyanka, as she is a fabulous actress and I really enjoyed working with her. However, I have not yet approached anyone for the female lead for this film till I lock in some other critical casting.”

Even if he hasn’t made up his mind, has Priyanka been artfully bringing herself to his attention? He says, “That’s totally flattering. She is one of my favourite actors.”
