CREATING MAGIC: Deepika Padukone and Farhan Akhtar in a still from the film
Farhan Akhtar is fida over his hot co-star Deepika Padukone…

SHARIN WADER BUTANI Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; December 9, 2009)

It’s difficult to separate the director-producer and actor in Farhan Akhtar, for he’s forever honing his acting skills, thinking of a marketing strategy to promote his films or of different angles to make his stars look larger than life. But today he’s in a different mood. He keeps aside the Don 2 script he’s been working on and gets talking about his hot costar from Kartik Calling Kartik, Deepika Padukone. “There are no words to describe her beauty, she’s extremely beautiful. Many will identify with me when I fall deeply in love with her in the film. In the hot quotient, she ranks among the top three actresses in Bollywood… need I say more,” he asks.

Farhan feels that the two share a wonderful chemistry but he wanted to be doubly sure so he held a focus screening where he invited people from different age groups to come and watch it. “I called my driver’s children and their friends, college students, housewives… and they felt the same,” he says. Once on the show that he was hosting, Deepika had turned up as his guest, standing tall, towering over him. “In reality, we are of the same height. I actually measured her with a measuring tape,” he laughs and adds, “she’s got long legs, her pose and posture make her look tall… unfortunately, I have neither.”

In all his films, Farhan has always given his actors a “hair-raising” experience, thanks to his wife, hairstylist Audhuna. Aamir had the spiked look in Dil Chahta Hai, Hrithik sported a crew cut in Lakshya while Preity Zinta went bob, Arjun Rampal had to grow his hair and Farhan himself was seen in a hairband in Rock On. And for KCK, Deepika had to chop off her hair. “I have a secret pact with Tirupathi Balaji, I cut their hair and send it there… but for Arjun in Rock On, we made hair extensions from the hair that we had cut during Dil Chahta Hai,” he laughs. “My actors shouldn’t look the same in my film the way they did in some other film. The audience should be able to see the character than the celebrity in them,” says Farhan, who plays a lovable loser in KCK. “I can relate to the character because in the past, I have been one myself. Like the crush I had on this girl but never admitted for the fear of being rejected,” says Farhan, who will be playing a fullfledged romantic hero in the film.

If you thought Deepika Padukone had ducked out of sight and was dodging the media following her split with Ranbir Kapoor, think again. The model-turned-actress herself revealed to BT that she was lying low because she didn’t want to reveal her new look for Kartik Calling Kartik.

In the film, which co-stars Farhan Akhtar, Deepika has got herself a short-short haircut. The actress, who had waistlength hair till recently, has now got it down to her
shoulders. “I last chopped my hair when I was eight,” said Deepika. Apparently Audhuna, the celebrity hairstylist and Farhan’s wife, and director Vijay Lalwani had to convince Deepika to go in for the change.

“They thought with my height, I would be able to carry it off well,” said the actress. But she argued with the director that she would go in for the haircut only if he shaved his head bald. “He didn’t do that but he saw to it that he was present in the salon so that I don’t back off at the last moment,” laughed Deepika. People who have seen her new look, have loved it. Her parents were amazed. “Everybody says it looks good on me and makes me look younger,” smiled Deepika. The actress plays an interior designer in the film. “The scriptwriter had a certain image in mind when he wrote my character Shonali. So I had to do justice to the role,” she said. What about her responsibility as brand ambassador for some hair-care products? Wasn’t her long hair the reason she got those lucrative deals? “It’s okay, I like it this way now,” said the beauty, “Change is good.” sharin.wader@timesgroup.com

After working incessantly for three years, Deepika Padukone is looking forward to a family holiday in the US

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 19, 2009)

After continuously being on her toes for three years, Deepika Padukone has finally decided to take it easy. The actress will soon take a short break and head for a holiday to the US with her family to attend a cousin’s wedding. The Padukones are looking forward to spending time with their relatives.

Deepika’s close friend said, “Deepika has been working incessantly since the last three years. Also, she just broke up with Ranbir Kapoor, so the break is a welcome relief for her. She signed Om Shanti Om in 2006 and the back-to-back shooting schedules for other films left her with no personal time. Even before Om Shanti Om released, she was working on Chandni Chowk to China and Bachna Ae Haseeno. As soon as she completed these two films, she got busy with Love Aaj Kal. Recently, she completed shooting for Farhan’s Akhtar’s Karthik Calling Karthik and Sajid Khan’s Housefull. Then, there were the cameo appearances and the endorsements, which also kept her occupied. When the rest-deprived Deepika got an opportunity to spend time with family, she immediately grabbed it.”

“One of Deepika’s closest cousins is getting married and she was to leave for the US last Sunday but since she had to finish a shoot, she will be leaving after a couple of days and will spend at least ten days with her family in the US. Since there is a lot of speculation about her personal life due to her break-up with Ranbir, she wants to come back rejuvenated,” added the friend.

Deepika confirmed the news and said, “My brother is getting married. It is the first big wedding in the family and I am looking forward to it. I believe it is very important to make time for family, no matter how hectic one’s life is.”

STILL FRIENDS? Deepika Padukone
Deepika Padukone keeps herself busy with work

MEENA IYER Times News Netowrk (BOMBAY TIMES; November 19, 2009)

A few days before Diwali, Deepika Padukone was a girl deeply in love. Despite her own work assignments, the leggy beauty was shunting between Mumbai, Bangalore and Bhopal just to be able to spend quality time with beau Ranbir Kapoor. Just when they were crowned the hottest couple of Bollywood, came the news that they had decided to part ways. BT even heard a diva, with chocolate-like complexion, telling people on the sets of a comedy film that the hotshot couple had made a clean break. But if rumours are to be believed, the embers haven’t died down yet. True, Ranbir and Deepika are no longer the couple they used to be, but the two still exchange a dozen phone calls everyday. While one may or may not give credence to this, it’s very clear that the young actors don’t want to ruin a friendship they’ve shared even if the ‘fondness’ levels have dipped. Besides, both are smart enough to understand that being in the same industry, they will cross each other’s paths everytime. Meanwhile, instead of wallowing in self pity, Deepika has decided to keep herself immersed in work. The girl has green lighted Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Khelien Hum Jee Jaan Se with Abhishek Bachchan; Kunal Kohli’s next with Imran Khan and Pradeep Sarkar’s film with Neil Nitin Mukesh. She’s expected to fly to the US on a work assignment around November 20, do two new commercial endorsements and then there’s also Kartik Calling Kartik and Houseful which she has to complete.

Deepika Padukone is a girl in love, but also a superstar in her own right…

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; October 11, 2009)

The Mediterranean tan sits pretty on Deepika Padukone who has just returned from Italy where she wrapped up Sajid Nadiadwala’s Housefull with Akshay Kumar. “I was in London, then Italy for the longest time, so I didn’t get to enjoy the success of my last film Love Aaj Kal,” says the pretty South Indian, her large brandy-coloured eyes dancing. She’s clear though that she now has to move on to her next two releases — Kartik Calling Kartik with Farhan Akhtar and Housefull, both of which will come in 2010. Deepika has also signed Pradeep Sarkar’s gritty thriller to be shot on the streets of Mumbai with Neil Nitin Mukesh. “Producer Aditya Chopra had promised me a film right after Bachna ae Haseeno,” she recalls. “I’m glad Adi remembered that.”

For now, she too has made a promise to herself — she’s a girl in love but she will not gush about Ranbir Kapoor. On a recent television show when she was asked to analyse her superstar-boyfriend, Deepika was very pragmatic in her answers. “I know that I was expected to gush about Ranbir,” she smiles. “However, I believe that people who are closest to a person, must always give them a reality check. I’m aware that Ranbir is a superstar. But, I will always be rational when I speak about him.”
Deepika, who spent 12 days in Bhopal by her boyfriend’s side where he is shooting for Prakash Jha’s Rajniti with Katrina Kaif, says, “Ranbir and I have been away from each other for long spells because of our individual work schedules. Our career is of prime importance to us. However, I don’t wish to be one of those actors who is so caught up in work that I forget to keep in touch with life. Hence, I make it a point to spend time with him whenever I can. Work definitely makes my world go around but a short break here and there makes life so much more special.” The story goes that she flew to Bhopal just to keep Katrina at bay? “Certainly not,” says Deepika. And, though she is too professional to make any comment on Ranbir’s co-stars, her calm demeanour has a way of signalling that she’s secure in her new-found success. The actress is in a cushy place with a new set of friends like Ayan Mukerji and Vicky Singh, who are common to both Ranbir and her. “I knew Ayan would make a good film when he gave his first narration to Ranbir,” she says. Is she in Vicky’s new film with Ranbir, as is suggested by the trade? “It’s a bit premature to talk about that project,” she says. “Vicky is still undecided on what he wants.”

AR Rahman

Farhan Akhtar

Shooting for Kartik Calling Kartik and hunting for exotic locales for Don 2 is keeping Farhan Akhtar so busy that he is unable to find time to record a song for Blue with AR Rahman.

The song will be filmed on Zayed Khan. Rahman, who is scheduled to return to India from the US next week, has the option of scrapping the song or recording it with a different singer. But the composer is willing to wait as he is keen to work with Farhan. He says, “It’s not just his voice.

It’s the attitude that he extends to his vocals. I thought Farhan sounded terrific in Rock On!!. But the song I have in mind is totally different. I am against talking about something which is uncertain. What if the time factor plays villain? No point in jumping the gun.”

…was Deepika Padukone’s perky reply when asked what her man thought about her latest performance

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; August 11, 2009)

Deepika Padukone has been stopped in the streets of London a dozen times a day in the last ten days. “Indians, Pakistanis and other Asians have all stopped to tell me only one thing — that they have loved me in my latest film,’’ says the actress excitedly.

She is particularly delighted that no one mentioned that Kareena Kapoor would, perhaps, have been better in the part than she is. “Saif and I were perfect for the part is everyone’s firm opinion,’’ she
says. “Imtiaz Ali obviously knew what he was doing when he cast us.’’

She herself caught a private screening with boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor. Ask her what he thought of her performance and she quips, “You must ask Ranbir what he thought of me. I can’t tell you.’’

If she is all smiles now thanks to the fantastic response, the actress recalls how two weeks ago things seemed bleak. “I was down with a bout of malaria,’’ she says. “I was so weak that the doctor who was treating me in London almost didn’t want me to travel.’’

The high levels of anxiety she went
through on account of her health and the shooting of her film Housefull being held up gave her a bad case of the blues. “Of course,’’ she says, “the silver lining to this whole thing was that my last release worked.’’

She is just four films old, but Deepika is totally sorted. “While I love the compliments I receive (believe me, they are almost as many in number as the ones I received for Om Shanti Om) I don’t want to fly. I’m just a newcomer on the block and I need to stay focused. Praise is all fine, so is flattery. But at the end of the day, I have to move on to doing
better work.’’

Deepika’s next release will be Kartik Calling Kartik with Farhan Akhtar followed by the mad-cap comedy Houseful with Akshay Kumar. “Not only is the film a comedy, even shooting for this film is a riot,’’ says the actress. “Whether it is Akshay Kumar, Sajid Khan or Sajid Nadiadwala, they constantly keep everyone on the set in splits. I can’t tell you how much fun it is.’’

Life is coming up roses for her…
