A jittery Shahid Kapoor forces Ken Ghosh to chop a steamy kissing scene with Genelia

It was a lip lock that was just becoming a major talking point for the upcoming Shahid Kapoor-Genelia D’Souza starrer Chance Pe Dance, but now the scene has been chopped off completely. And don’t blame the Censor Board, it’s Shahid himself playing moral police.

Apparently the actor developed cold feet when he saw the scene because he was certain that the scene wouldn’t go down well with the legion of kids who comprise a major portion of his fan base.

A source close to the development confirms, “Yes, there was a kissing scene in the film along with a love-making scene. However Shahid thought that it wouldn’t be good for his image with the kids. He also felt it would put off people from coming to the cinema hall with their kids, and he did not want that to happen. So he spoke to Ken Ghosh (the director) and insisted the scene be removed from the film. Though Ken wasn’t very keen about the idea since the shot had taken a lot of effort, he finally understood Shahid’s point of view — even Ken loved the idea of the film not having an A certificate. The scene has been removed.”

When contacted, Ken didn’t seem to be complaining at all. “My film is for teenagers, for children and for families. It’s a wholesome entertainer with humour, emotional moments and lots of fun. It’s got great music and fantastic dancing — and it’s got a U certificate. Need I say more?”

Kareena Kapoor The likes of Imtiaz Ali, Rajkumar Santoshi, Vishal Bhardwaj, Balki and Prabhu Deva must be feeling disheartened. If only Rajkumar Hirani, Aamir Khan and Co. would have released 3 Idiots a week later, the competition was just amongst the five of them for Love Aaj Kal, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Kaminey, Paa and Wanted respectively. However, due to the fact that 3 Idiots is a fantastic experience for millions of cine-goers and above all is pretty much fresh in audiences mind, it is the unanimous choice for one and all. Whether it is ‘aam junta’ or industry alike, there is no negative word around this movie. Instead, it has been universally hailed, acclaimed, appreciated and above all respected, which has proved once again that if a film is really well made, all bad blood is forgotten, all negative vibes are kept aside and all competition stays a distance away. Over to the Bollywood folks who (keeping certain exceptions aside) truly believe that 3 Idiots is the film of 2009.

Kareena Kapoor3 Idiots was the best film of 2009.

Sajid Khan – Best movie of the year was Avatar. Reason? It was not a film but an experience.

Shirish Kunder – For the sheer sincerity with which it has been made, 3 Idiots is simply the best by leaps and bound. Aamir has once again proved that he is the ISI mark of good cinema.

Piyush Jha3 Idiots was the best film that 2009 had to offer because it took a very relevant issue and banged home the point. Moreover, the icing on the cake was that it was thoroughly entertaining.

Kalki Koechlin Kalki – Best film of 2009 was Kaminey because it’s a furious and an intelligent film with great performances and music.

Aanand L Rai – For me the best movie in 2009 is 3 Idiots. It boasted of a brilliant screenplay and direction.

Suneel Darshan – 2009 ended on a positive note with two movies – Paa and 3 Idiots. Paa displayed refined performances by Mr. Bachchan and Vidya Balan. On the other hand 3 Idiots is a sincere attempt at entertainment with a soul.

Hasnain Hyderabadwaala – I enjoyed watching Wanted most. It was after a long time that I saw a complete masala film. Total paisa wasool!

Ramesh Taurani – Of course I believe that Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani was the best film of 2009. But so have been 3 Idiots, Paa, Wake Up Sid and Love Aaj Kal. All these films have been hugely entertaining.

Robby Grewal – It’s a one horse race – 3 Idiots.

Sadaa3 idiots was surely the best film of 2009. It was a complete film as it lacked nothing. Moreover, there was some very good message being delivered in an entertaining format.

Vaishali Desai Vaishali Desai – I loved both Avatar and 3 Idiots. Both films belonged to completely different genres. Avatar boasted of some breathtaking special effects and it was an entirely new experience. Whereas 3 Idiots is yet another cult film about the education system from Mr. Hirani.

Raksha Mistry – Call it ironical but the best of 2009 came at the very end. Yes, I am talking about 3 Idiots which is not just the best of 2009 but also one of the finest movies ever in all aspects.

Boney Kapoor – I have heard great things about 3 Idiots but I haven’t seen it yet. Of course Wanted was a complete package as it brought back the concept of hero, something which was in vogue years back when Amitabh Bachchan used to play such characters. Somehow such cinema had become extinct. Amongst other films, I also loved Love Aaj Kal. It’s entire approach was very fresh and everybody performed well. Its music was superb. The film was as mainstream as it gets and was a good blend of the old charm and new thinking. Even Paa was quite exciting. After a really long time came an Amitabh Bachchan film where he could showcase his talent. It was a neat and clean movie that really moved me. Moreover, in spite of having a sad tale on the surface, it was tackled in a very lighter vein. It reminded me of Hrisihikesh Mukherjee at his peak. Watching the film gave me the same feeling as I had when I watched Anand. Since Amitabh Bachchan’s effort didn’t show in the film, that itself reflects that how great an actor he is. Really, Imtiaz and Balki are two filmmakers to look out for. From Hollywood, it was Avatar all the way. I can’t think of a better movie visually. In fact it would take a really long time for anyone to match it technically; it has surpassed all films where technical wizardry and visual appeal is concerned. All the special effects have been taken to a different level altogether with Avatar.

Ken Ghosh – I am on a jury for an award, so I can’t really quote around the best or the worst of the year

Rohit Shetty – Best film of the year is 3 Idiots for sure. It makes you feel so good and happy after watching it.

Jagmohan Mundhra3 Idiots was the best movie of 2009.

Tanushree Dutta Tanushree Dutta – For me, the best films of 2009 would be 3 Idiots and Avatar.

Ruslaan MumtazKaminey was the best film of the year along with 3 Idiots

Sujoy Ghosh – I haven’t seen 3 Idiots but I’ll go with Paa. It’s a film which made me feel very good about life. It’s a film which took some of my fears away. It’s a film which taught me to look at different things normally. I really appreciated that. It’s a film which didn’t try to squeeze my balls for emotions. And of course Mr. Bachchan, Vidya, Balki, Illayaraja and P.C. Sreeram made it all possible.

Sophie Choudry – According to me, 2009 was filled with below par cinema both in Hollywood and Bollywood. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed 3 Idiots, Kaminey and Paa. They were all brilliantly made films.

Urvashi SharmaBaabarr is one of my favourite films from 2009 but I think 3 Idiots has broken all the records and is the best Hindi film of the year. From Hollywood, I loved both The Hangover and Avatar.

Kunal Deshmukh – I loved Avatar because it educates us to think ahead and learn so much. And of course 3 Idiots, as we all know today, is a fabulous movie. It brought home a message without shoving it down your throat.

Tusshar Kapoor Ananth Mahadevan – Though Paa and 3 Idiots are what I would define as ideal mainstream cinema (they made cine-going a pleasure after what seemed ages), if one has to select a film, my choice would be Nandita Das’ Firaaq. The four stories were moving accounts of the aftermath of human folly fuelled by political insanity. The critical eye may pick a few bones of contention, but the film was relevant, urgent, well enacted and most importantly, credibly treated.

Tusshar Kapoor – Which movie is best for me in 2009? Obviously, there is going to be just one answer – 3 Idiots.

Backed by the success of 3 of the genre defining blockbusters of 2009 – KAMINEY, WAKE UP SID and DEV.D, UTV Motion Pictures announced an aggressive line up of 4 films for the period of January – March 2010.

The slate for 2010 kicks off with CHANCE PE DANCE, which has been directed by Ken Ghosh and stars Shahid Kapoor, as the talented and passionate Sameer with a never-say-die attitude and Genelia, as a beautiful and spirited choreographer, Tina. The film will have a worldwide release on 15th January.

HARISHCHANDRACHI FACTORY, India’s official entry to the Oscars this year, will hit the screens on 22nd January. This acclaimed Marathi film directed by Paresh Mokashi is a UTV production, co-produced with Paprika Media and Mayasabha. The film has also been screened for the BAFTA and Golden Globe juries, apart from various other film festivals.

PETER GAYA KAAM SE, a fast-paced action adventure movie with a romantic twist, is directed by John Owen. Starring Rajeev Khandelwal and Lekha Washington, this film is about Peter, a football crazy motorcycle taxi rider, who decides to turn his back on Goa and quit his job – until his sleazy loan shark boss Bosco persuades him to do one last job – the job that will change his life forever. The film is scheduled for a March 2010 release.

PAAN SINGH TOMAR, the true epic journey of a talented runner who turned into a rebel, has been directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. It stars Irrfan Khan and Mahie Gill, and will be released in March 2010.

Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures said, “While 2009 has been a low year for the film industry in general, we released some interesting films which etched themselves in the minds of the audience. DEV.D, KAMINEY and WAKE UP SID created new benchmarks for what can now be perceived as commercial cinema. Our slate for 2010 promises to be a very entertaining mix and we are very excited to be bringing audiences such a wide array of interesting cinema.”

The much-anticipated releases by UTV in 2010 include Prakash Jha’s RAAJNEETI, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s GUZAARISH, Anees Bazmee’s THANK YOU, Rajkumar Gupta’s NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, Vishal Bhardwaj’s EK BATAA SAAT, Aamir Khan Productions’ DELHI BELLY and PEEPLI LIVE.

Why did Genelia D’Souza rush to meet her director Ken Ghosh at midnight on Christmas Day when her family waited for her at home for the festivities?

At midnight on Thursday when Christmas day started, Ken Ghosh finished editing and post-production of Chance Pe Dance and was feeling like sharing the moment with his lead pair. Shahid Kapoor however, was unavailable. Genelia, Ken thought, would be busy celebrating Christmas with her family.

Says Ken, “Even I was supposed to be back home with my wife and kids for Christmas opening gifts (I love doing that). But since it was the final day of post-production, I had no way of avoiding work even on Christmas. I really wanted to share that moment with my actors.”

On an impulse Ken called up Genelia. “And guess what? She agreed to come down to Pixion in Bandra where I was editing straight from midnight mass which was in a Church nearby. I never thought she’d do this, what with Christmas being an important day in her home. But she did. But then Genelia has been hand-on with this project, almost like a part of the production team.”

Genelia’s enthusiasm for the editing and post-production of Chance Pe Dance was due to her proximity to the project, in more way than one. Explains Ken, “Genelia lives down the road from Pixion where we edited Chance Pe Dance. And her gym is in the same building as Pixion. So throughout the editing and post-production Genelia has been dropping in. But on Christmas midnight she outdid herself.”

Genelia rushed to the editing studio after midnight mass, saw the complete film and rushed home to join the family for Christmas. Says Ken emotionally, “Before she left she gave me the best Christmas gift ever. A big hug. Throughout the shooting of Chance Pe Dance she has been our sunshine girl. So much so that when she wasn’t on the sets, all of us would actually get depressed and perk up the minute she came back.”

Ken Ghosh wanted to increase the budget of Chance pe Dance after Jiah Khan was dropped from the film, but the producers flatly refused

The release of UTV’s next venture, Chance pe Dance, is just around the corner. But it seems that all is not well between the producers and the director, Ken Ghosh. Apparently, after the infamous Jiah Khan episode where Genelia D’Souza replaced her, Ken wanted to increase the budget of the film from Rs 20 crores to Rs 24 crores.

However, UTV stuck to their guns and told him flatly that under no circumstances can he increase the budget. Ken had no option but to shoot the film with the allotted budget.

A source said, “Ken has not made a film in the past few years, so he wanted to make an extravagant film now. However, after the entire Jiah Khan episode, the budget went haywire, but UTV firmly refused more money, saying that a film with Shahid and Genelia cannot exceed 20 crores for it to be a saleable project.”

A source close to the production house said, “The budget of the film is Rs 20 crores and despite whatever pressures we had from the line producers, we made sure that the budget does not exceed the sum. There were issues during the making of the movie but we were firm about not going beyond the budget to make it a saleable proposition.”

Ken Ghosh had a different story to tell. He informed us, “It’s the opposite. We finished the film within the given budget. In fact, the last installment was returned to the producers and there were no issues at all.”

For Chance pe Dance, Shahid Kapoor gears up to live in a car for two full days. He even plans to have meetings inside it…

UTV Motion Pictures and director Ken Ghosh have come up with a unique idea to promote Chance pe Dance. The film’s lead actor, Shahid Kapoor, lives in the car through the major part of the film.

So the film’s marketing team decided to create a marketing strategy on similar lines.

Our source said, “Marketing the film is very important and everyone needs different ideas. It’s very difficult to convince Shahid to do something, but he approved of this idea. We will mostly be using an old Maruti 800, which Shahid has used in the film.

He will actually stay in the car and even have meetings inside the car. The event will take place in January, days before the film’s release.”

Chance pe Dance

Shikha Kapur, VP-Marketing of UTV Motion Pictures said, “Shahid is shown living out of his car in Chance pe Dance, so the idea of having him actually live in his car for two days did come up.

However, this is just one of the many plans for promoting the film and nothing has been finalised at the moment.”

Ken Ghosh may have replaced Jiah Khan with Genelia D’souza, but Jiah still makes her presence felt in a song. What will poor Ken do now?

It seems that Jiah Khan’s ghost has come back to haunt director Ken Ghosh and the crew of Chance Pe Dance. After the bitter experience that Jiah Khan went through when she was unceremoniously dumped from Chance Pe Dance, she is now visible in the film. Jiah shot for around 20 days for the film before she was replaced by Genelia D’souza.

Our source said, “Yesterday afternoon, there was a trial for the cast and crew of the film in Bandra. While watching the rough cut, they noticed that Jiah Khan was spotted in the background in one of the songs. Ken Ghosh panicked and asked the operator to rewind the shot and his worst fear came true.

He was disappointed as he could not edit the shot as it was part of the song. The technical error can’t be reshot as they can’t make the set and get the same dancers back for the song. In fact, all the portions that Jiah had shot for were chopped or Genelia was replaced digitally.

Now the entire team is trying to work out how Jiah can be removed from the song. The technical crew is working overtime trying to either pixilate the portion where Jiah is visible or erase her from the frame. In either case, it will be a creative liberty.”

Ken Ghosh has decided that discretion is the better part of valour. He said, “I don’t know where you have heard this news and I do not wish to comment on this.”
