By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 29, 2009)

Deepika Padukone is on cloud nine. Last night, she was the privileged Bollywood personality to have dinner with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and 20 cabinet ministers at the PM’s residence at 10 Janpath, in Delhi. The dinner was organised in honour of Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and his wife Miyuki Hatoyama, who are currently on a visit to India.

The Japanese PM and his wife are huge Bollywood fans and expressed their desire to meet Deepika. They loved her in her debut film, Om Shanti Om (2007).

When Deepika got a call from the PM’s office asking her if she would like to attend the dinner, she immediately agreed. Pleased as punch, she even took a day off from the shooting of Ashutosh Gowariker’s Khelenge Hum Jee Jaan Se in Goa to make it for the dinner.

She wore a saree by Manish Malhotra for the occasion.

We spoke to Deepika before the dinner. She said, “It is a privilege and honour for me to be invited for this dinner. I am excited and nervous at the same time.”

Aishwarya and Vivek get into a tricky spot at an event; Manish Malhotra sorts things out

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 21, 2009)

Aishwarya Rai’s past is suddenly confronting her. After a face-off with Salman Khan on December 17, she bumped into Vivek Oberoi on Saturday at Andheri Sports Complex. Aishwarya and Vivek were there for Mumbai police event titled Jashn 2010-Dhamaka Bollywood Ka.

After Vivek entered the stadium, he was shocked to see the seating arrangement. The LCD screen which was placed at the entrance showed that his seat was right next to Aishwarya’s.  An eye-witness said, “Vivek literally froze at the prospect of sitting next to Aishwarya. He simply refused to enter the function.” The organisers then tried very hard and somehow managed to convince him to sit exactly where they wanted.

The eye-witness added, “There was space for one person between Aishwarya and Vivek. Asin was sitting there seconds before Vivek entered. She left that place to perform on stage. Vivek entered when Asin had left her seat.”

And the drama unfolded… As soon as Vivek sat down, Aishwarya took a sneak-peek at him. Our source said, “She became very restless and began fidgeting. Vivek could sense her discomfort. He suddenly turned and looked at her.” To help matters, designer Manish Malhotra who was standing nearby, came rushing in and sat between the two. Sensing the vibes, Vivek left his place in a few minutes and went away.

Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi remained unavailable for comment.

However Manish said, “Yes, I was sitting between Aishwarya and Vivek. But I didn’t rush in. I was already sitting with Asin on my left. Vivek came in after Asin left to perform; it was he who was sitting in Asin’s place, not me.”

Punit Malhotra wants a rugged look for Imran Khan in his directorial debut, mama Manish Malhotra is reluctant to give up the glam quotient

By Sonal Chawla / Deepak Tubhekar (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 09, 2009)

A mama-bhanja fight has been brewing… and no, we’re not referring to Aamir Khan and Imran Khan. It’s Manish Malhotra and his nephew Punit Malhotra who are quarrelling over Imran’s costumes for Punit’s directorial debut I Hate Luv Storys.

Imran plays an assistant director in the film and needs to have a rugged, carefree look according to his director Punit, who has been an AD in real life. But Manish, who is styling him, is sticking to the glam look he gives all his stars. A source from the unit reveals, “Manish bought a white Calvin Klein backpack for Imran as well as 20 pairs of trendy shoes and denims.Seeing this, Punit freaked out and explained that Imran needs to have a very casual, rugged look since he is playing an AD. They finally narrowed it down to five pairs of denims and two pairs of shoes to be worn through the movie.”

The makeover includes a weight-gain program for Imran as well. The source continues, “Punit has given a lot of tips to Imran in terms of dressing up since he has been around and been an assistant director himself. Imran has gained considerable amount of weight for the movie but at the same time is looking lean. He now weighs 70 kgs as compared to his debut film Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na where he weighed only 59 kgs.”

Imran, amused by the exchange between the director and stylist, says, “Manish had got a white pair of shoes and Punit asked him to put small stains on them, to go with my character. Manish freaked out and grabbed the shoes. It took a long time for Manish to understand that I am playing an assistant director and not one of the pretty glam actors he normally dresses up. But eventually Manish did a fab job with my styling.”

Twenty stars to do the catwalk for a good cause

NICOLE DASTUR Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; October 23, 2009)

When Naresh Goyal’s 20-year-old daughter Namrata Goyal, who is Shabana Azmi’s godchild, went to the village Mijwan in UP with the actress-cum-activist for the first time, she came back with an idea. Such was the life transforming experience for her.

To rewind a bit — Shabana Azmi’s NGO Mijwan Welfare Society (MWS), which was started by her father Kaifi Azmi, has been doing noteworthy work for the betterment of the villagers of Mijwan. When Namrata was amidst the villagers, she too was inspired to do something for their welfare. And that’s how
‘Mijwan — Sonnets in Fabric’, a fashion show with a difference was born, to raise funds to set up a District Learning Centre in the village. “I have always believed in the power of youth to act as catalysts for change. Fifty percent of India is under 25 years, they can change the world if they are motivated to get involved and tap into their own reserves of strength,” says Shabana.

SA The fashion contest-cum-show will
also serve as a platform for fashion designing students to showcase their talent. Students from five fashion and design institutes will take part in an inter-collegiate contest where shortlisted students will be mentored by designers Manish Malhotra and Anita Dongre, and their creations will be showcased by top stars and models including Karan Johar, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Abhay Deol, Malaika Arora-Khan, R Madhavan, Konkana SenSharma, Dia Mirza, Prachi Desai, Raima Sen, Boman Irani, Arshad Warsi, Sandhya Mridul, Mona Singh, Tupur and Tapur Chatterjee, Aditi Govitrikar, Diandra Soares, Alesia Raut and Dipannita Sharma. The show, to be held in December, will be compered by Mandira Bedi, styled by Manish and Anita and judged by eminent names. “These stars are youth icons and it will be a huge boost for these students to have their creations showcased by them,” says Shabana, adding that she is grateful to all the stars and designers for being a part of this venture absolutely free of cost. ad
Katrina walks the ramp for Salman in a dress hand-painted by him

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 14, 2009)

For the Couture week on Tuesday night, Katrina Kaif flew in from Bhopal for a day just to be part of the event and walked the ramp in a dress that Salman had hand-painted. The face on the fabric was of a saint.

On her arrival in the morning, Salman showed her the black-and-white fabric painted with the saint’s face. Katrina was completely dazed.

Salman has never painted a dress for anyone before. Trying to contain her excitement hours before the event, Katrina said, “Within hours in the morning, Shane and Falguni Peacock took my measurements and stitched the dress for me. It’s got an amazing feel, flow and look. Almost surreal. I feel different wearing it. I can hardly wait to walk the ramp in it.”

Fashion correspondent Mitali Parekh reports

Salman Khan’s show was a show of power as he got almost every A-list male star to walk the ramp. Saif Ali Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan, Govinda, Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan all walked. The only female star walking was Katrina Kaif.

Seen in the first row were Preity Zinta, Sridevi, Boney Kapoor, Malaika Arora Khan, choreographer Farah Khan, Amisha Patel, Seema Khan, Manish Malhotra, Amrita Arora, Twinkle Khanna and Salman’s mothers Salma and Helen. Sushmita Sen was also seen, though not in the first row.

Aamir Khan’s wife Kiran Rao was spotted before the show started but was not seen in the front row with the stars and star wives.

The clothes were designed by eight designers, Gavin Miguel, Shane and Falguni Peacock, Rocky S and Rohit Gandhi among them. The show was styled by Aki Narula. The gowns were designed from prints of Salman’s paintings. Katrina’s gown was by Falguni and Shane Peacock. Each gown had one painting. There were about 9-10 gowns including Katrina’s. The transfer of the painting onto the fabric and the stitching was all done in three days.

Overall, the show was rather stiff and macabre. It began with children playing on stage. Some of them lay on the ramp while the other kids drew their body’s outline with a sketch pen. Then they retreated to the back of the stage where the kids played on the wooden grid. Towards the end of the show, the kids joined the stars on the stage. Again, all the kids lay on the ramp while now the stars drew the outline of their body with a pen as if they were homicide victims.

HOTTIE: Sherlyn Chopra.
Firecracker Sherlyn Chopra on her exclusive agreement with the Times, movies and more

REAGAN GAVIN RASQUINHA Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; September 21, 2009)

Sherlyn the free spirit, Sherlyn the daring, Sherlyn the utterly gorgeous… Many epithets have been used to describe this vivacious, lusty, full-bodied and bodacious woman. There’s now a lot that’s happening for her but when she sits down to reflect, she sees herself as a “girl next door with big dreams”.

“Very big dreams,” she says, continuing, “I believe in the Almighty God who is able to do exceedingly and abundantly far more and above what I can ever dare to hope, ask or dream. I think of myself as competent enough to compete with the best.” She admits to a past she’d like to put behind.“Earlier, I lived in the world of mediocrity. But today, I value excellence and choose to associate with people who pursue it.”

And while she’s building her body of work, there has been talk as well about her body. To be specific, her breasts. Sherlyn is outspoken about her body, and the decision to get them surgically enhanced must have been a tough one. “Earlier, I felt like a boy. Not any more. Thanks to breast implants. I speak about my breasts only upon being asked. I find ‘No Comments’ a very uninteresting way to respond to a question.” That’s right, Sherlyn is nothing if not outspoken. This, coming from a woman who once said, ‘Arrogance in moderation does wonders to one’s personality’. “Yes, arrogance in moderation can help an individual become super-confident.The apprehensions, doubts and fears tend to take a backseat,” continues Miss Super-Confident whose positive mantras are available on itimes.com where you will also find exclusive pictures, videos and blogs by Sherlyn.

Since it’s clear that Internet is the way of the future, she has entered into an exclusive agreement with Times Internet Limited (TIL). Under this, exclusive rights of all her mobile content lie with TIL, specifically to be provisioned by Indiatimes 58888, on SMS, WAP, Voice and all operator platforms. “It’s a great honour! With most actresses shedding their inhibitions, there is a lot of competition on the Internet. And I love it. It compels me to redefine excellence,” she says.
Here’s how you can keep track of what Sherlyn’s upto: get her mobile downloads, send messages or listen to her thoughts, by just calling 58888799 or SMS SHERLYN to 58888.

Meanwhile, she’s a bit nervous about what’s happening on the movie front. “That’s a question I dread the most. I’m thrilled that Dil Bole Hadippa! has released. I play a UK-based super model who’s smitten by an Indian cricketer played by Shahid Kapoor,” she says. Incidentally, ace Bollywood stylist Manish Malhotra has given Sherlyn her high-fashion look for Dil Bole Hadippa!. Supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell were chosen as references for it. Far from the regular glamourous look, this one addresses everything from the layering of fabrics to accessorising them, the handbags, footwear, gadgets… everything about Sherlyn in the film is high fashion. Check it out, and if you want to be like her, join Sherlyn’s Platinum Club and get her exclusive personal merchandise. Just point your browser to shopping.indiatimes.com/sherlyn. She’s confident of a good innings in Bollywood. “I’m chasing a few A-league directors. Farah Khan is one of them. So far, she has been very, very sweet,” adds Sherlyn.

Beyond sweetness and light, Sherlyn confirms that as before, she will never hesitate to flaunt the raunch. “As long as my body is beautiful and well-toned, I would love to flaunt my curves whether or not the script demands. I love my detractors. They provoke me to pursue what seems impossible in the natural realm. I don’t want them to change. Should I move on from my Dard-e-Sherlyn and Outrageous days? Do you really want me to,” she asks, rhetorically.
