Kannada matinee idol Vishnuvardhan, passed away of cardiac arrest yesterday

At the age of 22, H N Sampath Kumar was rechristened Vishnuvardhan by legendary director Puttanna Kanagala and he had fame and popularity literally seeking him out overnight. The Mysore-born actor would often call his entry into films as dynamic and expressed a desire to have a graceful exit. It turned out to be an unexpected exit in the early hours of December 30; and not just from films.

At 59, none of his fans, friends or family expected him to perish. The late actor was suffering from diabetes and had developed cardiac problems during his last days. He is survived by his wife, Bharati and two adopted daughters.

Vishnuvardhan made his film debut with a small role in Vamshavriksha directed by Girish Karnad in 1972. In the same year, he appeared in Puttanna Kanagala’s magnum opus Naagarahaavu, where he played the protagonist Ramachari, which remains a much-liked character to date.

A polyglot who could speak six languages, his life changed when films beckoned him. As Vishnuvardhan would recall later in life, he had neither enthusiasm nor love for films. “I was not a hard worker, but a sincere worker,” he summed up his film career. When his first photograph appeared in Chitradeepa magazine after his film debut, what the young Vishnuvardhan aspired was to be recognised by girls as he walked around Gandhi Bazaar.

At the time Vishnuvardhan married actress Bharati, she was a bigger star than him. Their marriage lasted for a lifetime but the couple was childless. They adopted two girls. But the actor never spoke about this aspect of life.

In the last few years, Vishnuvardhan had become a disciple of Bannanje Govindacharya and taken up vows of silence from time to time. He would avoid public platforms that would necessitate him to make tough statements or take stands. However, he held on to his beliefs and would never waver from his somewhat radical views.

Akshay Kumar, who is holidaying with his wife and son in Goa, expressed his shock about the superstar’s death. Akshay says, “I worked with him in Ashaant (1993) and I think, that is the only Hindi film that Vishnuji did. We shot it in his home town Bangalore, and he was so popular! Men, women and children came to him to be touched by him. He was like God. Newly-born babies were named after him.”

Akshay remembers the good times that they had while shooting the film. “Vishnuji was disciplined, focused and hard working. I have learnt a lot from him. We did a Hindi and a Kannada version of Ashaant. The Kannada version was a super hit. The Hindi version was a flop. I guess he was a much bigger star than I could ever be. As I speak about him now all the memories of shooting during that film flash through my mind. I met him in Bangalore much later. He was warm and very friendly. Was he just 60? That’s no age to go.”

Ask multi-faceted debutante Ravi Kapoor who though may not have had a success with his maiden venture World Cupp 2011, but is surely hopeful of making it big. The writer-director-actor who stirred many controversies in 2009 is gearing up to win the hearts of people in the coming year. “I have some interesting films lined up for the next year and I am hoping with those films I manage to win back my audience,” says Ravi. Talking about World Cupp 2011, Ravi says, “I am not like other filmmakers who would fake their film’s performance. Though my film didn’t go good at the box-office it attained its purpose of unearthing the behind the scenes action in the game of cricket. Many people said my acting suffered as I had my fingers in too many pies. I am learning from my mistakes and will give up direction for a while.” Adding further he says, “Acting and directing is like marrying two ladies. You can’t keep both of them happy. So from here on, I will only focus on my acting career, and have already signed a couple of great films.”

Paresh Rawal’s new serial Lagi Tujhse Lagan is based on a true-life incident

Paresh Rawal is ready with his TV serial, Lagi Tujhse Lagan, which is inspired by a real-life incident. It is the story of a good-looking girl Nakusha, whose mother makes her look ugly to shield her from unwanted attention from men. In the process the girl gets ill-treated by everyone because she is dark and ugly.

Paresh had witnessed a similar situation with a relative’s maid, when he was 13 years old.

Talking about the incident which he has translated onto the small screen, Paresh says, “I wanted to tell this story for a long time. I remember this maid who was working with a relative of mine. She was not good-looking and everyone made her life miserable because of it. She was not allowed to get married as they feared she would go away and they would have no one to work at their home. Although my relative had four daughters, they were too lazy to do housework. I am intrigued that in our country where Lord Krishna is not fair-complexioned, why does everyone want to look fair? And why is the definition of good looks only associated with fair complexion? Being dark is one of the biggest stigmas in our country. I wanted to tell this story to the world and bounced the idea to my production partner Hemal Thakker. Although I could do nothing to help the poor maid, as I was 13 then, I now want to tell her story to the world.”

A woman from Indore is hounding Rajeev Khandelwal to convince him to marry her daughter

Recently, a middle-aged woman (name withheld on request) from Indore landed up at Rajeev Khandelwal’s house in Goregaon West to persuade the actor to marry her 20-something daughter, who stays in Mumbai.

A source says, “The lady in question stays in Indore. Ever since Mumbai Mirror broke the news about Rajeev Khandelwal dating Manjiri Kamtikar (Rajeev’s moment of truth, July 22, 2009), the lady has been persuading the actor to marry her daughter. Last month, she visited Rajeev at his home to convince him. Rajeev, of course, refused to hear her pleas and politely declined her offer.”

However, the lady is bent on succeeding. The source adds, “A few days ago, she visited Rajeev’s house again and this time she brought her daughter along. Rajeev was flabbergasted but stuck to his stand and asked them to leave the house. While leaving the house, the adamant woman insisted that Rajeev meet her family in Indore since she is sure there is a karmic connection between Rajeev and her daughter.”

Confirming the incident, Rajeev says, “Aisa bhi hota hai. I was surprised but there is little that I can do about it.”

We have often heard of lead actors and actresses receiving fan mails in which ardent admirers have claimed their undying love, and at times even proposed marriage to stars.

However, this time, it was the turn of filmmaker Karan Johar, who was at the receiving end of a female fan’s admiration. The lady also asked Karan to marry her.

On Sunday afternoon, Karan Johar received a huge parcel from Uzbekistan. Karan was pleasantly surprised to see a specially designed carpet which had his image.

It also had a letter from a girl named Dilbahar. On reading the contents of the letter, Karan realised that it was a love letter in which Dilbahar had proposed marriage to him.

The filmmaker was taken aback by the valuable gift and its sentiments as he had never in his wildest dreams imagined that a female fan could be so smitten by him.

Although Karan remained unavailable for comment, a source from the Dharma Productions office confirmed the news and said, “Although Karan thought that it was nice of the fan to write some kind words, he couldn’t help but feel embarrassed by the contents of the letter.”

A man insisted that Govinda should marry him. When Govinda refused, he started stripping, forcing the actor to run away from the spot

A few days ago, Govinda got quite a scare when man dressed up as a woman entered Jal Darshan building in Juhu, where Govinda resides, and demanded to meet the actor.

Although the building’s security guards did not allow the man inside the premises and tried to talk to him, he refused to relent. An eyewitness says, “The man said that he wanted to meet Govinda at any cost. He refused to budge.”

When all efforts made by the security guards failed, they were left with no choice but to inform the star about the visitor. On getting to know about the hullabaloo created by the man, the actor agreed to meet him thinking that he might be one of his ardent fans.

The actor was in for a shock when the man directly told him: “I am a man but I want to marry you. If need be, I am even ready to undergo a sex change operation, but please let’s start a life together.”

At first, Govinda was shocked by the revelation. Thereafter, he tried to explain to him that this was simply not possible. However, the man was in no mood to listen. When he realised that his sweet-talk was failing to do the needful, he started removing the padding he had worn, right in front of Govinda’s eyes, embarrassing him to no end.

That’s when the security guards took stock of the situation and had no choice but to manhandle the visitor. Meanwhile, Govinda, fearing that the man may get even more obscene, ran to his car and drove off.

Confirming the incident, Govinda says, “Haan, yeh sab hua tha. Woh aadmi mujhse shaadi karna chahta tha. He told me that his name was Sameera, but obviously, that was a false name. I told him yeh nahin ho sakta. Usne bahut masti aur battameezi ki. Ab sab kucch to main bayaan nahin kar sakta, na?”

In the process of eliminating handful of terrorists, we end up creating many more-this best describes the policies of Western developed powers who are hell bent on making the world more democratic but adopt inhuman ways to achieve the end point. Kurbaan throws light on this sensitive topic and thankfully treats it well. The flick throws a spate of questions and forces you to think, discuss and debate. But it doesn’t get preachy and hence it’s not like one of the several films on terrorism that are made for a niche audience. The film is thrilling, has some wonderful twist-n-turns and includes some moments of love and passion too. All this make Kurbaan one of the finest films of the year-one that can’t be missed!

The story of the movie: Ehsaan Khan (Saif Ali Khan) takes the job of a teacher in a university in Delhi where he comes across a psychology teacher, Avantika (Kareena Kapoor). He instantly falls in love and she also ends up liking him. But unfortunately, she’s called back to New York where she originally belongs. Realizing that it would be wrong to have a long-distance relationship, Ehsaan also moves to NYC with Avantika. But before that, they marry. After moving to New York, they buy a new house in a neighborhood full of Asians, conservative Muslims to be precise. The neighbours invite Ehsaan and Avantika for dinner so that they can get familiar with each other. Soon, Avantika realizes that things are not fine in the neighbourhood as they seem and finally, realization dawns upon her-she has been as used as a pawn in a dangerous game.

The beginning 20-25 minutes focuses on Saif-Kareena’s courtship and may not impress. It was the weakest part of the film and wasn’t treated well. But thinks take a good turn with the song Shukran Allah and when the couple shifts to New York. The film engrosses from the scene where the neighbours invite them for dinner. From this sequence, the film turns into a roller coaster ride with lots of unpredictable turns. The entry of Riyaaz (Vivek Oberoi) in the narrative adds to the icing on the cake.

The intermission point was brilliant and fortunately, unlike other films, Kurbaan doesn’t fall or gets slow in the post-interval portions. In fact, the 2nd half also keeps you hooked onto your seat. A number of sequences are memorable in this hour. Kirron Kher sharing the tragic story astonishes you and Kher’s mind blowing performance only enhances the impact. Same goes for the scene where Saif is nursing the wound with little help from Kareena after getting hit by a bullet. The way the blood tickles down and the way Saif screams-man, it gives goosebumps!

The last 30 minutes of the film is undoubtedly the best portion of the film. The tension that is created in the climax and the engrossing and captivating direction is truly appreciable. The film ends on an acceptable note.

Regarding the flaws, as mentioned before, the first 20 mins doesn’t work. Also, the film is full of violent and gory scenes which might not be liked by some sections. And the editing wasn’t upto the mark. More about it later!

Kurbaan is a rare film where the cast and most of the crew have worked exceptionally well in all respects. Saif Ali Khan was outstanding in his role. He looked dapper in his new look and performance wise, doesn’t provide even a miniscule chance of complain! Thus, Kurbaan can safely be added to the list of ‘finest performances of Saif’. This year has been particularly lucky for Saif with his home production Love Aaj Kal being a super hit and now even Kurbaan has been appreciated. His next Agent Vinod with Kareena is also expected to rock! Way to go Saif!

Kareena Kapoor has exposed as minimal as possible and still managed to look stunning. She’s always been delivering fine performances and in Kurbaan too, she does a perfect job. Watch out for the scenes where she discovers that she has been used and in the climax. She proves once again as to why she’s one of the top actresses today! Great going!

Vivek Oberoi steals the show with his wonderful act. In fact, his acts impact more than Saif-Kareena at several points in the film. Audiences as well filmmakers would surely sit up and take notice of this highly talented actor who was neglected in the past due to many reasons. He is expected to shine in his next films, Prince and Rakta Charitra too!

Kirron Kher, like Vivek, leaves a mark in several scenes. For a change, it was good to see her in a different kind of role than her usual stereotypical ones. Om Puri performs with ease. Dia Mirza looked charming and impresses with her special appearance. Nauheed Cyrusi does a fabulous job. Asheesh Kapur, who plays her husband, was great. Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Aakash Khurana and others were good.

Salim-Sulaiman’s music was haunting and songs suited the film well. Shukran Allah, Ali Maula and Kurbaan Hua are the three best songs. Ali Maula leaves a mark. The duo’s background score was electrifying and they may bag the Best Background Score award this year.

Anurag Kashyap and Niranjan Iyengar’s dialogues were sharp and top notch. Best dialogue of the film was, “Ek minute ke liye bhi ye mat sochna ki ye allah ka kaam hai!Parvez Feroze’ gory action enhanced the reality of the film. Asif Ali Shaikh’s editing wasn’t upto the mark. One can notice that desperate attempts were made to haphazardly cut down mini portions of scenes to reduce the duration of the film as much as possible. Not good!

Rensil D’Silva, the screenwriter-director scores in his dream debut. Although the direction wasn’t perfect, the film managed to make an impact and give out a strong message. The screenplay was undoubtedly intriguing.

And finally, kudos to Karan Johar for writing the film and also for producing such a hard hitting flick. KJo was criticized for making lovey-dovey films only. But with his last two films and Kurbaan, he has proved that he’s here not only to rake in moolah but also to provide fresh and interesting flicks! Hats off!
