Bollywood lets its hair down as 2009 comes to an end and raises its hopes for 2010

AMITABH BACHCHAN: In the New Year, the entire family is hoping to do the kind of work that would please the audience and carry the company forward. Our New Year wishes? May 2010 bring peace and well-being. May it fill us with pride as a nation. May our glory spread further. May we progress in all walks of life. And may the year keep me alive to witness the country, the film industry and my family prosper and progress. I look forward to the coming year passing peacefully.
KATRINA KAIF: I couldn’t hope for a better New Year’s day. I’m in London with my sisters and brother having the time of my life. We have lots of fun when we all are together. After I started working I have hardly seen my siblings. So meeting them is always special and a festival to mark our meeting, is the cherry on the cake. My mother forced me to leave my cell phone behind in Mumbai, so I’m almost cut off from Bollywood. What hopes for 2010? Lots of hard work and hopefully hits.


SHAH RUKH KHAN: I will be at home (Mannat) with Gauri, Aryan, Suhana and a couple of close friends like Karan Johar. Being with close family is the one thing I truly cherish.


AKSHAY KUMAR: Tina, Aarav and I are in Goa. I normally take a vacation from December 29 to January 2 because it includes a double celebration. Tina’s birthday on December 29, and then the New Year’s eve party. Honestly what can be better than spending time with your loved ones? This is a commitment I have made to my family.


DEEPIKA PADUKONE: I will be home in Bangalore with my parents and my sister. Then I go to Goa to wrap up the last fortnight on Ashutosh Gowarikar’s film. Every year I hope that the following year is as exciting as the previous year and I’m very happy with the way my professional life is going. Hope 2010 is the same.


RANBIR KAPOOR: I start shooting for Siddharth Anand’s film in the US from January 2. Since I didn’t wish to be in an aircraft on New Year’s eve, I left India on December 27. My entire family is in Dubai as tomorrow is my paternal grandmother’s birthday and the family is treating her to a one-week holiday there. I wish I could join them!


KAREENA KAPOOR: Saif and I are in England. We are catching up with Saif ’s Oxford batchmates and their spouses. I’m dying to wear my fur coat and sniff the English chill… looking and feeling every inch a diva. We work hard all the year around to make this happen, so let me enjoy myself.

BIPASHA BASU: I’m performing tonight. Then there will be a small get-together with friends. I always like to keep my New Year’s plans uncluttered. Home is the best place to be on any special occasion. And New Year will be a nonfilmy evening at home. Beyond that my only resolution for 2010 is, love yourself.

VIDYA BALAN: I bring in 2010 with my birthday tomorrow… no one can forget it! What hopes do I have for 2010? Oh plenty! After watching Mr Bachchan at work in Paa, I realised being focussed on your work to the point of shutting out everything else is not something I need feel guilty about. Now I’m all set to be seen as this full-blown, seductive, sexually-charged woman in Ishqiya. It brings an entirely new perspective to my personality for the audience. That’s what I’m hoping for in 2010… to find new aspects to my personality through the roles I play.

AJAY DEVGN: Kajol, Nysa, my parents, cousins, sister and her family and I will all be at our Karjat farm house. We’re planning an extended holiday. I start work only from January 2, so does Kajol. So in the meantime it is going to be a huge, long party.


AMRITA RAO: I wonder what 2010 has in store for me… Resolutions sound nice to the ears but adhering to them is a matter of destiny!


AMISHA PATEL: I have a show in Dubai. I will be working and then I will take a holiday. I always like working on New Year’s day because I feel you will then be working throughout!

RITESH DESHMUKH: Friends and I are contemplating how to ring in the New Year. It’s not compulsory to indulge in anything fancy, even a quiet time with good friends does the trick!


ARSHAD WARSI: I am looking forward to three releases in 2010. Will start Raju’s film next year so it’s going to be an eventful year. I haven’t a plan for New Year as yet. I’ll be with family and friends.


ANUSHKA SHARMA: I don’t do much for the New Year. Actually I do nothing. I just wish my family and go to bed.


SHABANA AZMI: As usual I’ll be with my family and a few close friends for the New Year.


IRRFAN KHAN: On every festive occasion I try to visit my mother in Jaipur. But for the New Year I made plans to be home. Beyond the New Year I’ve made no plans. I’ve noticed every time I’ve chalked out a plan for myself, life has humbled me. I leave all my plans to God.


MUGHDA GODSE: I am dancing at a live performance in Delhi tonight and will spend New Year with family and close friends. I’ve a horror film tentatively titled Help coming up for release. My co-star Bobby Deol is such a sweetheart. I hope to find a guy like him this year. Where are all the gentlemen?”


HEMA MALINI: I won’t be doing anything much for New Year. I’ll be with my family and rehearsing for my dance show which is on January 2.


POOJA BEDI: I’m having a small get-together on the terrace of my beachfront penthouse with flowers, candles and an incredible view of the entire city, with my father, my children and a few loved ones.

SUSHMITA SEN: I normally travel overseas. However, Alisah, my younger daughter, can’t travel abroad yet because she doesn’t have a passport. Hence it will have to be a beach resort in India.

ASIN: For me it will be a quiet New Year with family. I wanted to make it for Christmas itself, however I will ring in the New Year at my family home in Kerala.

While things are proceeding smoothly in Mugdha Godse’s professional life with Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail up for release, the same can’t be said about her personal life. The latest couple to split is Mugdha and her longtime boyfriend, Mithun Purandare, who is a model and aspiring actor.

 

Mugdha and Mithun first met in 2003 during the shoot of a music video, which was being directed by ace photographer Jagdish Mali. Cupid struck when the two got several modelling assignments together. Mithun was completely smitten by Mugdha. He was on cloud nine when Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion, which marked Mugdha’s entry in Bollywood, hit the theatres last year. Buzz was, he had even booked an entire theatre so that he could organise a private screening of Fashion for Mugdha’s family, relatives and close friends.

Destiny had other plans for the couple by the time Bhandarkar went on the floors with another Mugdha starrer, Jail. Things started going wrong early this year when the couple realised that they had completely different tastes. However, they soon buried the hatchet and decided to give their relationship another shot. “By then, too much water had flown under the bridge. They just couldn’t work things out,” said a source.

The parting was, however, not ugly. “Mugdha and Mithun are still friends and wish well for each other,” added our source.

When asked about her break-up, Mugdha was initially a little hesitant and said, “Things are different now.” On being probed further, she confirmed and said, “Mithun and I are not together any longer. I am single now. Both, Mithun and I, were very young then (when their relationship started). As two people grow up, they might realise that they are not meant to be together as a couple but are better off as friends.”

Last week, Madhur Bhandarkar had presented his upcoming film Jail for a Censor certificate. While it is common news by now that his film was granted a U/A certificate, what hasn’t come out so far is the heated argument that went inside the confines of the four walls. Situation had turned so ugly that during the 45 minutes debate with the Censor officials, Madhur threatened to follow the path of many of his contemporaries in Bollywood and henceforth make only candy floss films. Reason being that Censors had a strong objection against usage of abusive language in certain scenes, depiction of jail inmates, a sex scene involving two gay inmates, skin show by Mugdha Godse and of course much hyped nude scene featuring Neil Nitin Mukesh.

Here is a blow by blow account on what actually transpired in the screening room:

“Once the film’s screening was through, Censors were quite happy with the realistic depiction of life in jail. They appreciated the fact that as promised, it was shown realistically without being overtly dramatized. Also, they felt that a movie like this was the need of an hour as it broke away from stereotype cinema and showed something new to the audiences. They congratulated Madhur for his brave effort and were liberal with compliments”, says a source closely attached to the film.

However, trouble began when it came down to handing over the Censor certificate to the film. Apparently, Censor board felt that the film was not at all suitable for underage audiences and hence was willing to grant only an ‘A’ certificate if the film was to be retained as it is. When Madhur asked for reasons, they came up with such a long list of objectionable scenes and dialogues that it completely flabbergasted the filmmaker, who has made a career out of depicting reality on screen.

“Madhur really didn’t know what hit him because he was quite sure that Censors would keep the theme of Jail in mind before passing the verdict. He was not at all expecting the ‘A’ certificate and the cuts suggested by the Censors were unacceptable to him. He felt that it was unfair on his movie since he had made it after such an extensive research. He couldn’t fathom why Censors were being harsh on the film when his intention was not to glamorize the entire jail world or give rise to any scandals”, recounts the source.

So what were these ‘objectionable points’ in the film that have resulted in such hue and cry? And what’s the counter argument given by the makers of Jail? Let’s have a look:

A dialogue mouthed by a police official to an inmate: ‘Danda neeche se daloonga aur moonh se nikaloonga’
Argument: You don’t expect police to be polite when they are dealing with criminals (or possible criminals). Moreover, Akshay Kumar (who had played a cop) had said the same to Irrfan Khan in Madhur’s own Aan – Men At Work.

Argument: How otherwise would an inmate let out his sexual frustration? Nevertheless, keeping the sensibilities of family audiences in mind, the scene has been deleted.

A dialogue mouthed by one of the characters: ‘Mumbai ki khudai Grant Road ki ch***i, kabhi khatam naho hone waali mere bhai
Argument: That’s a tapori way of speaking and the film does show such characters. No more comments.

Argument: You don’t expect a decent language when hundreds of men are lodged together in a jail. Even otherwise, there have been at least a dozen odd movies before Jail that have allowed liberal dose of colourful language.

Argument: A very small part of the song ‘Saiyan Ve‘ shows Mugdha and Neil getting intimate with each other where her night dress slips down a little. Censors saw red in that. Wonder, as there has been far more skin show in practically every second film that releases today.

Argument: Doesn’t that happen in jails worldwide? The scene features two gays getting intimate in a bathroom. Censors had objections to this which is surprising since Madhur’s own Page 3 had a similar scene. In any case, the dialogue has now been changed in Jail. However, the scene has been retained.

Argument: Censors felt that the scene was still quite bold for the Indian audience. However, it is a basic process where every inmate is required to strip down completely to reveal any weapons that he may be carrying. In any case, we had pixilated the scene but the Censors wanted it to be further blurred. We were left with no options.

Due to scenes as above going through a change and or in case even completely chopped off, Madhur was left fuming. More so because otherwise the Censors were unwilling to grant it even a U/A certificate.

When contacted, Madhur was expectedly diplomatic about the entire affair. Not willing to comment much, all he stated was – “I want my film to reach out to a larger audience. I am happy with the U/A certificate. Censors were working in their own set parameters and I don’t want to challenge that.”

However, the source continues, “Ironically, this is not the first time that Madhur’s films have faced an axe from Censors. We don’t really have to go very deep down the memory lane for this. Fashion got an ‘A’ certificate and still, it was such a good success. On the other hand, both Page 3 and Traffic Signal were given U/A certificate, but they went on to get National Awards for Madhur. We are just hoping that the same happens for Jail as well though it would have been great had the film been retained as it is.”

After a lot of mayhem, finally Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail has been given a green signal by the Censor Board, but with a U/A certificate. It was not an easy task for Madhur as the film has seven cuts, including the much talked about Neil’s nude scene. Madhur had a long argument with the Board officials, who were not ready to pass it without the cuts. Madhur had to finally accept the U/A certificate.

A source said, “The censor board was extremely strict. Seven scenes, including a love-making scene between Neil and Mugdha Godse, a homosexual scene, a sex joke and Neil’s nude scene, have all been slashed. Abusive dialogues have also been deleted. While Madhur was unwilling to concede a bit, he was also not ready to release the film with an A certificate.”

Ultimately, Madhur has to bow down to the authorities. He said, “The board wasn’t satisfied with some scenes and had asked me to further blur Neil’s already blurred nude scene. I did put across my arguments, but ultimately accepted the U/A certificate as I want everyone to see the film. It is an eye opener and a hard-hitting film which reflects the judiciary system of our country.”

The Regional Officer of Censor Board said, “Yes, there were certain scenes and dialogue which we found inappropriate and asked the director to remove them. If it is an A certificate film, we are very liberal, but otherwise we have to be strict. We loved the film. It was impressive and well researched. It surely is a thought provoking film but we have to go by the rule book and that’s what we did.”

It was really disappointing to see the spate of comic flicks released in recent times. Some said that there have been an overdose of comic flicks and that’s why now each one of them is failing. However, the underlying truth was-those films flopped because all of them were plain bad films-as simple as that! Some producers had assumed that even if the script is flawed, their comic caper would work and audiences would accept. And when this didn’t happen, they came up with the explanation of overdose! All The Best breaks all these myths! The film is a laugh-a-minute riot and it works damn big time because of its wonderful performances, mind-blowing script and even better execution. This is the most satisfying comedy in a long time, in the lines of Hungama, Hera Pheri et al!

The story of the movie: Veer (Fardeen Khan), a singer, stays in Goa and has a car-expert friend Prem Chopra (Ajay Devgn) and a ‘vastu-expert’ girlfriend Vidya (Mughda Godse). Veer’s elder bro, Dharam (Sanjay Dutt) is a big businessman who stays in London and sends money to Veer each month. Dharam then starts sending ‘double pocket money’ to Veer after Veer falsely tells Dharam that he has got married to Vidya-an idea given by Prem to Veer! Unfortunately, Veer and Prem get into debt and have to repay Rs. 10 lakhs to a local goon, Tobu (Johny Lever) in a week. In the midst of all this, Dharam pays an unexpected visit to Veer! Due to some misunderstandings, Dharam mistook Prem’s wife Jhanvi (Bipasha Basu) as Veer’s wife Vidya! Watch the movie to see how the drama and madness unfolds!

All The Best takes some time to set the mood and once it takes control, it entertains and how! The real mazaa initiates when Dharam visits Veer. From here till the last frame, the film is abounding with outstanding hilarious moments!

With so many characters in the narrative, the film could have got confusing. But it doesn’t, even for a second! You understand everything that’s going on even in every scene! Kudos to the screenwriters and the director! Also, there is not a single vulgar or double meaning joke in the entire film! Thus, All The Best is a clean and uncomplicated film which can be enjoyed by everyone from kiddos to oldies!

The fun quotient at times gets a little low esp in the 2nd half. Also there are some flaws in the story too. But there’s so much funny things happening in the film that you just don’t care! The film gets a bit mellow only during the song ‘Kyun’. But even that is so wonderfully treated that you are left amazed!

The climax is chaotic but isn’t nonsensical like seen in some recent comic flicks. In fact, the climax entertains and it also has a twist, which brings the house down!

From the promos, it seemed that Sanjay Dutt will steal the show. But surprise! It’s Ajay Devgn who comes up with the best performance! He showcases excellent comic timing and this is definitely one of the best performances of his career! With this film, he also turned producer and scores in it too!

Sanjay Dutt, like everytime, was just marvelous! He is an expert when it comes to comedies and gives a smashing performance. He was in much better form than he was in Blue and Luck! Watch out for his scenes with Ajay-both the talented actors steal the show! Just fabulous work!

Sanju and Ajay deliver such powerful performance that others get overshadowed, even though all were rocking. Fardeen Khan was brilliant although he had a better screen presence in Acid Factory and Life Partner. Bipasha Basu had an important role and does a great job. Mughda Godse looks charming but unfortunately doesn’t have much to do in the film, esp in the 1st half.

The film has lots of supporting actors who contribute a lot in making the film a hilarious caper. Johny Lever as the dumb goon was amazing. He rocks big time in 2 scenes-when the tyre of Ajay’s car gets under his feet and in the climax. Johny Bhai is back! Sanjai Mishra’s performance, too, was brilliant and he provides ample moments of laughter throughout the film. Asrani, Vijay Patkar, Atul Parchure, Ashwini Kaleskar and Mukesh Tiwari contribute well. The film also stars Shraddha Musale, who plays Dr Tarika in the weekly sitcom, CID!

Pritam’s music was in sync with the film. The title song and Dil Kare were the best songs. Haan Main Jitni Martaba was unnecessarily added but again, one doesn’t mind. Everything is so perfect in the film!

Dudely’s cinematography is as cool and stylish as his name! Jai Singh’s action and Rakesh Ranjan’s sound design works wonders in the car racing scene. Sanjoy Chowdhury’s background score was apt.

Finally, we come to the winners! Farhad-Sajid and Bunty Rathore’s dialogues are funny, witty and very impressive! Robin Bhatt and Yunuj Sejawal-the two experienced writers come up with a terrific screenplay. None of the scene seemed messy and this is how scripts should be in comic flicks!

And Rohit Shetty deserves nothing but applause! He has evolved wonderfully as a director. He knows what the audience wants and delivers everything perfectly! His first flick, Zameen was impressive. His popularity soared with his second film, Golmaal. But in my opinion, it fell at lots of places in the 2nd half. His 3rd film Sunday was disappointing while Golmaal Returns was as good as Golmaal. Thus, All The Best is undoubtedly his most accomplished work so far! Take a bow!

On the whole, All The Best is a true winner in all respects! It is the finest comic flick to hit theatres in a long long time! It’s a must watch for audiences of all age groups! Go with your siblings or with your parents or with your friends or with your loved one or simply go alone-but do go for it…coz it’ll surely make your day! ENJOY!!

Sometimes, we laugh at movies. At times, we laugh in movies. Thankfully, ALL THE BEST, helmed by Rohit Shetty, belongs to the latter type.

ALL THE BEST makes no claims of catering to the intelligentsia or the elite. Instead, it’s aimed at those who want to spend two hours of their precious life flexing their facial muscles. ALL THE BEST is for those who expect fun and laughter unlimited in those two hours. This one makes you smile, laugh, even break into a guffaw at times.

The jokes and the goings-on may appear silly, but who cares! As long as one feels positive and wears a smile on the face even after the show has ended, nothing else matters.

Comedy is serious business and Rohit Shetty is a pro at this genre now. This time, the talented director seeks inspiration from RIGHT BED, WRONG HUSBAND and what works to the advantage are two factors – the written material and the right casting. Both are just right!

From time to time, it has been noticed that some films are made with the motive of keeping you entertained. ALL THE BEST is one of those films. Go, have a blast this Diwali!

Veer [Fardeen Khan], a singer by profession, is greedy of extracting extra pocket money from his brother Dharam [Sanjay Dutt], a business-honcho. Veer lies to Dharam that he has got married and his friend Prem [Ajay Devgn], a concept car expert, lends a helping hand in cooking up this alibi.

Veer is in love with Vidya [Mugdha Godse], but has qualified in the hate list of her father. Prem is happily married to Jhanvi [Bipasha Basu], who takes care of his ancestor’s outdated gymnasium. Veer and Prem land up in debts as they had opted for a short-cut to earn easy money.

The two get into a bigger soup when Dharam pays a sudden visit to their place. Time does not give a chance and unavoidable circumstances arouse such situations that Prem’s wife Jhanvi is mistaken for Veer’s and Veer’s girlfriend for Prem’s.

Like his previous films, director Rohit Shetty rests the story on multiple characters, with a dozen odd actors in supporting roles. With so many characters in the film, it generally tends to get confusing, but ALL THE BEST has an easy-to-comprehend story and a trouble-free and uncomplicated screenplay [Robin Bhatt and Yunus Sajawal].

Ten minutes into the film and you know that ALL THE BEST is all about mistaken identities. But the proceedings actually take off when Sanju enters the scene. That’s when you get drawn into this madcap world completely.

A number of sequences are howlarious. Note Johny Lever’s intro. Ditto for Sanjay Mishra’s track. Also, when Johny Lever regains his voice – towards the climax – it’s sooooo funny. On the flip side, the pace drops in the middle of the second hour. Also Pritam’s musical score is uninspiring and the songs act as speed breakers.

Rohit Shetty is in top form and his team of writers, Robin and Yunus, contribute enormously in making this film watchable. Dudley’s cinematography is perfect. Farhad – Sajid and Bunty Rathore’s dialogue are very much in sync with the mood of the film. In fact, a few one-liners are extremely witty.

Sanju portrays his part well. His sequences with Ajay are truly fantastic. But the show-stopper is undoubtedly Ajay, whose comic timing is only getting better. He plays to the gallery completely and delivers a sparkling performance. Fardeen needs to loosen up, though he makes a sincere attempt. Bipasha is sweet, while Mugdha doesn’t get much scope. Amongst supporting actors, Johny Lever and Sanjay Mishra are in terrific form. Mukesh Tiwari, Vijay Patkar, Ashwini Kalsekar and Atul Parchure lend credible report.

On the whole, ALL THE BEST is fun and laughter unlimited. At the box-office, the festive period coupled with the solid track record of Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty and also the strong merits will ensure ample footfalls at cineplexes, making its investors laugh all the way to the bank. Recommended!

You would have thought, with two other big budget, multi-star films releasing tomorrow alongside his All the Best, Fun Begins…, producer-actor Ajay Devgn might be in an excitable state of nerves. Far from it! On Monday evening, when I met him at home over coffee, Ajay was uber cool. Also, sleepy. That’s because it was 8 pm and in the Devgn bungalow at JVPD, it’s lights out at 9. “My daughter Nysa won’t sleep without me,” said Ajay explaining the early nights. “But, yes, I saw the film again yesterday with family and friends who are absolutely honest in their criticism. And, from seven to 65, they were all laughing nonstop! My mother, who normally worries about my releases, was relaxed. And I’ve never seen my father laughing so much. So I’m quite confident the film will work.”

He’s busy dubbing for London Dreams with Salman Khan. And shooting with Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor for Rajniti. But it’s All the Best that Ajay is living right now. And happily for the producer in him, the book on this
Devgn Films release is that it is a clean comedy that families can enjoy for Diwali, there are no double meaning dialogues at the cost of humour, the situations in the script are hilarious, the performances by Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu, Fardeen Khan and, well, Ajay himself are funny and riotous. “The film takes ten minutes to sink in,” Ajay revealed, “but from then on until the climax, you’ll laugh. There is an emotional moment in between. It’s needed. You take a rest in between laughing!” I understand the production of the film in Goa and Hyderabad was one big party. “We had a blast,” Ajay agreed, “this is a good team, and for 80 to 90 per cent of the film, all the characters are in every scene. Well, five are definitely there… and there are seven or eight characters. The climax has 20! All complement each other. When you are comfortable with your co-stars, when the entire cast understands that the film is the most important thing, then there is no stress. It’s team work. You can see that in All the Best. There’s great rapport between Sanju and me, Bips and I always get along well, Fardeen — I just got to know, but what a great guy he is, and Mugdha took just a day to get comfortable.”

Ajay is handsome in his praise for his director, Rohit Shetty, who apparently knows the pulse of comedies. “A comedy improvises,” said Ajay, “but how much works, when do you stop stretching it? Rohit has mastered the knack of entertaining audiences. He stopped
well within the limit.”
And he’s also generous in his acknowledgement of Sanjay Dutt’s performance: “His best — after Munnabhai, what timing, but Sanju was behaving like a producer… he was more worried about the film than me!” His own performance, Ajay is naturally reluctant to discuss.
