After scoring music for 100 films, 500 songs and huge shows worldwide, singer-actor Himesh Reshammiya still feels like a newcomer

It’s time to tune into Himesh Reshammiya once again as the composer turned-singer turned-actor prepares to step on the silver screen for the third time with Radio today. Himesh, who has been there and done it all, says he feels like this is debut. “Everything about the film is new. Be it my look, music, subject or the sensibilities. It’s something that people will relate to. It’s something that I would watch myself,” he says. The movie is about Vivan, a radio jockey, who gives people advice on their relationship troubles, but doesn’t know where his relationships are heading. The film apparently has already covered its cost through music sales, video and satellite rights. “Yes, the movie is a profitable venture even before its release, but I am looking forward to the audience’s reaction. I have worked a lot on this character and I crave for recognition as an actor,” admits Himesh. Of course, the composer, who has scored music for 100 films, 500 songs and has been part of many shows worldwide, is happy that the music has been appreciated so much and has been rocking the music charts. “Yes, the music is completely different. It’s a new sound, a new voice,” he says. Despite some people putting him down, Himesh has managed to brave the odds. And this time around he has gone for a makeover all over again. He will be seen sporting short hair and in a casual avatar. But this isn’t anything new for Himesh. “Be it my music or look, I have always believed in experimenting. People have appreciated my look in the promos too,” he says.

Ram Gopal Varma has quietly begun shooting for the sequel to Phoonk, titled Phoonk 2. However, his dream of casting Mallika Sherawat hasn’t materialised. Punjabi actress Neeru Bajwa has stepped into Mallika’s shoes. Milind Gadagkar, who was an associate with Ramu in Phoonk, is directing the film.

Neeru was Ramu’s third choice. Before Neeru came into the picture, Ramu had cast a newcomer, Adin.

A source says, “Adin , who shot for two days, threw a lot of tantrums, angering Ramu in the bargain.”

Neeru confirmed the news. She says, “Yes, I am doing Phoonk 2. However, I cannot divulge what role I play in the film. Phoonk 2 is a thriller and I have been strictly told not to reveal anything about the story.”

We wonder if Vivek Oberoi, who is reported to be close to her (Mumbai Mirror, Oct 14), has anything to do with Neeru doing Ramu’s film? After all Vivek is currently Ramu’s blue-eyed boy. Ask her that and she retorts, “Gosh! Tomorrow, you’ll say that Vivek recommended me to Dharma Productions because he is doing Karan Johar’s Kurbaan.”

Heroines today are much more comfortable with their sexuality than ever before

Did you cringe with discomfort when a seemingly innocent child woman Isha Sherwani seduced Farhan Akhtar into bed in Luck By Chance? Or, more recently, when a salwar kameez-clad Priyanka Chopra managed to convince a reluctant Shahid Kapoor to have sex with her in Kaminey, by telling him that she knows ‘homescience’ and that it’s ‘safe to do it’? More likely than not, you smiled at their boldness and prepared for more to come. Seduction was a game played by vamps in Bollywood in the 70s and 80s. Much later, lead actresses like Bipasha Basu and Priyanka Chopra were sexually charged in Jism and Aitraaz respectively. But even then, they were the ‘bad girls’. Well, times have changed — even the ‘good’ girls are taking a turn for the ‘bad’ and the audiences are lapping it up!


Watch newcomer Mahie Gill throwing herself in full abandon at Abhay Deol in a mustard field in Dev. D and you’ll know what we’re talking about. Trade analyst Komal Nahta says he isn’t surprised at this change. “Films, after all, are a reflection of today. Girls are proposing to guys, they are using seduction as a tool even in real life. The major composition of the audience comprises youth, so they have to show what the young generation identifies with,” he says. So Kareena Kapoor playfully hands Akshay Kumar her
bra in Tashan and Konkona SenSharma suggests a quick bout of love-making to Rahul Bose in Dil Kabaddi before they turn in for the night and Deepika Padukone has no qualms with Saif Ali Khan kissing her full on the mouth in the car in Love Aaj Kal. Agrees Mahie, “Reel life follows real life. Women today are more vocal about their sexual desires than what they were about a decade back. The audience today wants to see characters they can identify with. That’s why the boldness depicted by the newer lot of actresses has been accepted.”

According to film director Onir, a growing section of audiences in urban centres are accepting this change. “Independent working women watch these films with their male friends and colleagues who treat them as equals and therefore, accept their portrayal on screen as well,” he says. Also, the younger generation of filmmakers who have grown up seeing women as friends and colleagues, are showing female characters as they are, says Onir.

Ashu Trikha believes in following his dreams, even if that means waiting for three years to realise them. Not the one to follow a beaten path, the director, who’s also directed Alag, is back with another hatke film, this time based on the crime scene in Central India. Titled Baabarr, the film marks the debut of newcomer Soham along with actress Urvashi Sharma and also stars stalwarts like Mithun Chakraborthy, Om Puri, Tinnu Anand and Sushant Singh. Here, the filmmaker talks about his crime caper.

Baabarr is based on real-life incidents. What made you choose such a hard-hitting subject?
• The entire fact that such incidents have happened and continue to happen even today, and that the characters depicted in the film really do exist, is a matter of great shame for any society. It was something that I felt about very strongly.

You tried to deal with the film in realistic manner…
• Yes, because the film required it. Baabarr is a stark film, not for the fainthearted. A lot of research has gone into it. And during that, we realised that to get the right feel, it was important to keep the backdrop as natural as possible. So whether it’s shooting on rough terrain or in real locations or with real country made revolvers, we have tried to present reality in the truest form.
Your last few films have all been very different. Weren’t you wary of taking a risk with such a serious film on crime?
• Every film is a risk. The only thing in our hands is to make a film sincerely and with all honesty.
On the one hand you have a newcomer Soham and on the other hand you have stalwarts like Om Puri and Mithun Chakraborthy…
• Yes. And I felt like I’m having the best of both the worlds. There was raw talent waiting to be honed and there was a sea of experience waiting to be tapped. Omji and Mithunda are some of the finest actors to date, while Soham has the spark and is spectacularly good as a debutante.

Do you think a film so real is commercially viable?
• Absolutely. The film is not a documentary. It has its light moments, there are songs and dances too, but none of them have been forcibly included. So, it’s very much a hard-core commercial film, but with it’s sensibilities rooted in realism.

What was the most challenging thing about shooting for the film?
• Shooting in the kind of conditions that we did was challenging. Because unlike shooting in a studio which is quite a controlled environment, shooting in rough terrain is physically very demanding.

What’s the message you want your audiences to take home after watching the film?
• I don’t want to preach anything through my film. I only want them to question where we are headed as a society.

Deepika Padukone, after conquering Bollywood, is turning south! Jayant Paranji has roped in the Padukone for a special song in his Tollywood film, ‘Love 4 Ever’, which features newcomers, Randeep and Mrudula, in the lead.

Deepika danced to the tunes of “Chakde Mahiya need Duniya.. Haddu dati aadey day and night”. Her sizzling performance would be a highlight of the film, says the director.
