The actress breathed her last yesterday at a suburban hospital

By Kunal M Shah and Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 11, 2009)

Simple Kapadia, Dimple Kapadia’s younger sister, is no more. She breathed her last yesterday afternoon in a hospital at Andheri.

The former actress-turned-costume designer had been undergoing treatment at various hospitals since the last few years. It is believed that she was suffering from cancer but the family was always tightlipped about it.

A source says, “The family was under terrible stress because of Simple’s illness. They never spoke about it then and they will not speak about it even now.”

Director Rahul Dholakia, who was present at the hospital when Simple breathed her last, says, “My friend is no more. I really can’t talk.”

A family friend says, “Akshay Kumar (Dimple’s son-in-law) is returning from Baramati, where he is shooting for Priyadarshan’s next film.”

Simple began her career when she was 18. She made her debut in 1977 with Anurodh, where she was paired opposite her brother-in-law Rajesh Khanna. Later, she worked in Hum Rahe Na Hum, Tumhare Bina, Jeevan Dhaara, Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai, Dulha Bikta Hai, Naseeb, Shakka, Lootmaar, Man Pasand, Ahsaas, Rehguzar, Chakravuyha and Pyar Ke Do Pal. She quit acting in 1986 after Pyar Ke Do Pal. Later in 1994, she worked as a costume designer for Rudaali and won a National award for it.

Cinevistaa to sue Karan Singh Grover for irregularly reporting to the sets of Dill Mill Gayye

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 11, 2009)

Karan Singh Grover has his ex-wife and the producers of Dill Mill Gayye puzzled. Apparently, he used to tell his wife Shraddha Nigam before their separation (as reported by Mumbai Mirror, October 6) that he was leaving for a 9am shoot but would only reach the sets at 4pm.

Meanwhile, the production house suffered as Karan spent much less time shooting than he was committed to. Now, the producers, Cinevistaa, have filed a complaint against him with CINTAA (Cine & TV Artistes Association) and will sue him to cover their losses of about Rs 2 crore.

Karan would often turn up late or not reports to the sets, even though Shraddha thought he was diligently slaving over his shoots. Not so long ago, Shraddha called up Cinevistaa for some work and asked for Karan, only to learn that he hadn’t shown up.

Cinevistaa’s Managing Director, Sunil Mehta confirmed that his company has written to CINTAA complaining about Karan Grover. He said, “We’ve written to CINTAA telling them about Karan’s behaviour and the fact that we plan to sue him. He used to come at 4pm for a 9am shift and would leave by 10pm. My company has suffered a loss of over Rs 2 crore. We definitely intend to sue him. Shraddha was scandalised when my son told her that he has not reported for work, when she thought he’d left for a 9am shift.”

“At one point of time, we had thought of making a film with him as the lead actor. Now, Karan’s film with Mukesh Bhatt is not happening. Ditto for his film with UTV. Success, fame, adulation and power went to his head, I guess.” added Mehta.

We sent Karan a text message, but he remained unavailable for comment.

Mentally and physically tortured as a child, Anurag Kashyap broke down on the sets of Onir’s film about child abuse

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 11, 2009)

Playing a child abuser in Onir’s My Name Is Abhimanyu was the hardest thing that Anurag Kashyap has done. “And not only because I’ve been a victim of child abuse for 11 long years,” confesses Anurag, “But because the child whom I had to abuse on screen was blissfully innocent and oblivious of what I was doing.

By entering the mind of a child abuser, I realised what I had been through as a child,” Anurag blurts out.

Toughest was the part where Anurag, playing the child’s stepfather, had to bathe the little boy. “The child actor doesn’t have a father in real life. He was completely taken up by the act of his screen father, me, bathing him. After the shot, he ran to his mother to ask why he didn’t have a father to bathe him in this way. That’s when I realised how easy and how sinful it is for a man to sexually abuse a child. A simple routine exercise like a father bathing a child could be entirely stripped of its innocence by the man perpetrating the act,” says a distressed Anurag.

Anurag Kashyap

Anurag chose to play the abuser because the story had to be told. He says, “No actor was willing to play the child abuser. Having gone through the ordeal for 11 years, I realised it was very important for the victim and for the attacker to be played properly. I hated myself for playing the perpetrator of such a crime. But someone had to do the job or the story would remain untold.”

Anurag says he has forgiven the man who abused him. He says, “I met him after many years. He wasn’t some dirty old man. He was 22 when he abused me. He was guilt-ridden when we met. I decided to put the whole nightmare behind me and move on. But it wasn’t easy. I came to Mumbai brimming with angst, bitterness and a sense of violation and isolation. Thanks to the love of my life, Kalki Koechlin, I am completely cured of my acrimony.”

Acclaimed actor Om Puri is enormously upset with his wife, journalist-columnist Nandita for highlighting some of his most private sexual incidents to market her biography, Unlikely Hero: The Story Of Om Puri. A discernibly upset Om said, “I don’t care  if she’s my wife. I won’t let her get away with it.

I am in Chandigarh shooting for a film. On Monday I heard Nandita speaking about the biography she has written on me. I was shocked by her revelations. It was so cheap. She was talking about my sexual encounters as though those were my biggest achievements!”

Om’s main reason for being upset is Nandita’s revelation that he had sex with his maid Shanti at the age of 14. She has also exposed Om’s longstanding liaison with a woman named Laxmi with whom Om was sexually and emotionally involved.

Om is livid. “My wife has reduced a very important and sacred part of my life to cheap and lurid gossip. I had shared these dark secrets with my wife as all husbands do. If she chose to make them public at least she should’ve made sure to maintain a dignity about experiences that are a valuable part of my life. Has she forgotten that I have a standing in society and I’ve worked hard to achieve all that I have today? I won’t allow her to throw it all away for the sake of sensationalism.”

Om says that Laxmi was one of the most important women in his life. “This lady whom Nandita talks in such an undignified manner was Laxmi, who raised me and my brother’s orphaned children. My relationship with this wonderful woman was a homage to her loyalty for looking after me unconditionally.” Om doesn’t deny he had sex with Laxmi. “But it was not  a furtive and sleazy experience. It was beautiful. Why make such a tamasha out of these very sensitive moments? Mahatma Gandhi spoke of his experiences with sexuality in The Story of My  Experiments With Truth. But was that all there was to his life? Why highlight these aspects when there’s so much more to me? Do you know, when I was a child, I was travelling by train with my destitute mother. The entire compartment collected money to feed us. That incident remains etched in my mind. I was working in a teashop when I was seven years old. When I came to  the FTII, Pune I didn’t have a decent shirt to wear. I had to borrow one  from Naseeruddin Shah. I had hoped when my life was chronicled it would be an inspirational story.”

Om says his wife insisted on  writing his biography. “I was aware that another lady (Aparajita Krishna) was writing my biography. When Nandita expressed  a desire to write about me I couldn’t stop her because she’s my wife but she has forgotten who she is,” added Om.

The actor complains that Nandita didn’t allow him to read the  manuscript. “Not once did she let me read even one page of the manuscript. How was I to know how she would use the incidents from my life to sell her book?”

When we promised to be discreet in putting forward his anguish and humiliation, Om retorted, “Please don’t be discreet. Has she exercised any discretion in talking about my personal experiences? The final decision to put my life up as a tamasha was Nandita’s. I can’t forgive her.”

Om and Nandita Puri

When we asked Nandita for her side of the story, she said, “This is all such a mistake. My book on  my husband is a biography, not  bl***y pornography. The book is about Om, the man and the actor. Om has all the human foibles, just like all of us. He had sex as an adolescent with his maid and then he had a long liaison with the other lady who was also a maid. This was his way of coming out of his other relationships and demolishing class differences. If Om has any objection to her being called a maid he’s just being unrealistic.”

So are his sexual experiences an integral part of the book? “They are,” admitted Nandita. “But that’s not all.” Apparently, the broadcast journalist who interviewed Nandita picked up excerpts from a weekly news magazine. “She called me on her show and for 20 minutes she spoke only about Om’s sexual escapades. When I thought she’d  question me about other aspects of Om’s life in the book, the show was over. I was horrified. I was even more  horrified when I saw the show,” added Nandita.

Yesterday morning, Nandita received a very angry call from Om who is in Chandigarh .“He was livid. The double escapades with the two maid servants has made Om feel he’ll be compared to Shiney Ahuja. Now my husband is angry, my publishers are upset and so  am I,” said Nandita.

Minissha is being harassed with lewd calls and messages by a man with a track record of stalking actresses

By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 11, 2009)

Yesterday, we reported that Katrina Kaif was being hounded by a stalker at a multiplex. Now, Minissha Lamba is being stalked by a man who has been calling and sending her lewd messages.

The man turned out to be the notorious serial stalker who has hounded a lot of popular actresses and a star wife in the past.

A source close to Minissha reveals, “The actress started receiving abusive messages and calls early this month. She blocked his number, but the man continued to call her from different numbers. The actress lodged a police complaint at the Versova Police Station after two continuous days of harassment.”

The source continues, “The SMSes sent were extremely obscene. The stalker has no control over his language and gets extremely abusive. He used to call her from different numbers, and when Minissha would not answer, he would send her abusive SMSes, asking her to pick up his call.”

DCP KMM Prasanna at Versova police station confirmed the news. He says, “Minissha has filed a non-cognizable complaint (NC) with us on November 5. We asked her if she wanted to register a police complaint. She refused and just wants us to call and threaten the stalker. We will provide all the help she requires.”

Minissha did not respond despite repeated attempts to contact her
