Sticking by the unwritten rule in Bollywood about actresses being on unfriendly terms with one another are Bollywood’s top actresses, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. That Priyanka befriended Shahid Kapoor post Kareena broke up with him does not help in anyway. Currently, the two are fighting over a man named Pompy.
Pompy is Bollywood’s much coveted make-up artiste and Kareena and Priyanka both want him to glam up their looks. Having worked with Pompy on various films and commercials, the girls are addicted to him. The first thing they do after signing a film is to make sure Pompy’s schedule matches theirs.
A source from the industry revealed, “Earlier in the month, when Priyanka learnt that she had to go to Bangkok for the Anjaana Anjaani shoot with Ranbir Kapoor, her secretary tried his best to get dates from Pompy, but they did not match. The make-up magician was committed to accompany Kareena to Sydney, Australia, where she was to shoot with Kajol and Arjun Rampal for the Bollywood remake of Stepmom.”

The buzz in the industry is that Kareena counts Pompy as extended family and invites him to her films’ previews. The select few who attended the Kurbaan screening on November 12 confirmed that Pompy was a part of the audience too.
Not so long ago, cousins Rani Mukerji and Kajol would woo Mickey Contractor the make-up wizard resulting in many a misunderstanding between them. Some things never change in Bollywood.

Jail which opened last week would serve as deterrent for potential law breakers. Or so director Madhur Bhandarkar would like to believe.
“Anyone would think twice before committing a crime after seeing in my film what life is like inside a prison,” says the director.
Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail opened below expectations. The hard-hitting director has no qualms in admitting it. “It was a slow starter. But collections have picked up from the third day,” says Madhur, and adds, “You’ve to admit it requires guts to make a film set in a jail. The other film releasing with us was a light fun filled entertainer. We were fighting formidable competition since Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani was a lavish film. Ours is 12-crore rupee film and we’ll recover our money. The producers are happy. There are still the satellite rights to be sold.”
Madhur fights off comparisons with between Jail and his last film. “Fashion was a glamorous glossy big-budget film. Jail is a grim and honest look at life in a prison. It has a strong word-of-mouth element.”

Is Vivek Oberoi getting a raw deal? The Kurbaan promos feature Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor all the way. Vivek Oberoi who plays the third main protagonist is hardly glimpsed in the entire promotional campaign, triggering off a widespread feeling that things are not so right between Vivek and the Kurbaan team.
However, the explanation for Vivek’s absence is far more bizarre than the normal raw-deal rona-dona.
Apparently, his role is so deeply affiliated to the plot’s suspense that every moment shown in the promos featuring Oberoi would have the tendency to give away the story.
Laughs director Rensil D’Silva, “It’s a very strange situation. Vivek is one of the central characters. But almost every scene of his is a dead giveway of the suspense. What do we do?”
Rensil has discussed the problem with Vivek. “And he is absolutely cool with being the band mutthi of the film. I’ve spoken to Vivek and explained the dilemma. He was cool with not being featured in the promos that much. He said to do whatever is right for the film because when the film opens the truth about the extent of his role would be out. Vivek has worked very hard in the film. He had to acquire a true New Yorker’s accent and not the kind Indians get at the John F Kennedy airport.”
Vivek worked really hard on the accent. “We had a couple of New Yorkers on the sets to coach him. He’s got the NY accent bang-on. It’s not a borough-specific accent (NY has 5 boroughs each with its own speaking pattern). It’s a general New York twang. And Vivek is superb with it.”
Rensil cuts down the belief that Vivek has a cameo in Kurbaan? “Not true at all. Vivek is in 80 percent of the film. He’s central to the drama. Vivek worked very hard on the role. He was in my room in Philadelphia every night to discuss his diction, dialogues and looks. I seem his career at the cusp of something really exciting.”

Kurbaan gets an ‘A’ certificate

Sizzling scenes between Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor and extreme violence have resulted in Karan Johar’s soon-to-be-released Kurbaan getting an ‘A’ certificate by the censor board.
A source says, “There is a lot of violence as the film is set against the backdrop of terrorism. Taking this into account, the censors felt that a ‘U’ or even a ‘U/A’ certificate would not be advisable.”
Director Rensil D’Silva tried his best to reason with the censor board but they were firm about their decision.
Regional Officer of the Censor Board, Vinayak Azad, confirmed the news and said, “After we saw Kurbaan, we felt that it was meant for adult viewing only.”
1-800-Disconnected

For all you know, you may not have the opportunity to dial the toll free line to love. 1-800-LOVE will not be the title of the film if producer Madhu Mantena manages to get his way. Director Abbas Tyrewala and Madhu are having constant fights over the title of the film.
Our source reveals, “Madhu Mantena is dissatisfied with the title and is adamant on changing it. He has had several arguments with the director and wants to change the title because he feels that the Indian audience will not be able to understand and connect to 1-800-LOVE. They have had their fair share of heated arguments in the past over locations too. Recently, at the film’s wrap-up party, Madhu walked out after another one of their tiffs over the title.” Lead actor John Abraham had to then smooth things out between the two.
Madhu explains, “We rarely use toll free numbers in India. It is very important that the audience also connects to the film’s name for commercial success.” But isn’t it too late to realise this as the title 1-800-LOVE is already registered in people’s minds, we ask him. “We have ample amount of time to change and promote it, even though 1-800-LOVE has gained popularity. I love this film and Abbas too much to let this mistake happen.”
Abbas, firm about the current title, says, “For the longest time, I wanted 1-800-LOVE as my title. But Madhu wants a different one now. As Madhu says, it does happen that people refer to it as ‘One thousand eight hundred love’, which is not what the film is about. But I thought people will understand it. Madhu and I had a conflict and I understand his point, but need something more convincing.”
Laughing off his walk-out from the wrap-up party, Madhu says, “Abbas and I are very close friends and feel passionately about the film. We make it a point to show off our aggression. I am sure we’ll settle with a final title soon. And yes, on the other hand, John likes another title.”

Manisha Koirala |
Manisha Koirala, who has been missing in action for a while now, is back with a bang. She is set to play her first negative role as Jaya Bachchan’s shrewd daughter-in-law in Revathy Varma’s Aap Ke Liye Hum.
Confirming the news, director and co-producer, Revathy says that Manisha loved the role because of the challenge of playing somebody so negative. She adds, “It’s the role of Ranvir Shorey’s wife. This woman is so wicked that she doesn’t think twice about turning to her angelic mother-in-law and saying, ‘Why did you produce only one son and expect him to look after you? If you had a couple more we wouldn’t be burdened’. It’s the daughter-in-law who sends Jayaji to the old woman’s home. That beautiful angelic face saying such horrible ugly things to a frail, old woman would be the biggest challenge of Manisha’s career.”
The closest Manisha has come to playing a negative character was in Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se where she played a terrorist. The actress is expected to join the cast and crew when the shooting resumes in January.
Incidentally, this is the same role that Urvashi Sharma had earlier agreed to do, but backed out later because of non-payment of her remuneration.
Revathy laughs uncomfortably, “Well, yes. It’s the same role. But Manisha doing the role makes all the difference. And of course her remuneration too makes all the difference. Besides, Manisha loved the thought of sharing screen space with Jayaji. We start shooting right after Jayaji’s winter parliamentary session gets over.”
Deepika Padukone to star opposite Imran Khan, who happens to be her ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor’s closest friend
Deepika Padukone, who recently split with Ranbir Kapoor, will star opposite his closest friend Imran Khan in a film produced by Kunal Kohli. The film is the directorial debut of Danish Aslam, Kunal’s assistant.
A source says, “Post her breakup with Ranbir, Deepika is taking on more and more assignments to keep herself busy. She now wants to focus on her career and make all the right moves.
She has signed films with Ashutosh Gowariker and Yash Raj Films. Danish’s film, which is jointly produced by Kunal Kohli and Big Pictures, is another big film in her kitty. Deepika is very excited about it.
She chose to sign the film despite Imran being Ranbir’s close friend as she has moved on. She doesn’t want to mix her personal life with her professional life.”
Confirming the news, Kunal Kohli says, “It’s true. We have finalised Imran and Deepika for the film. We are hoping to start the film early next year. It’s a love story and we are yet to find a title for the film. Danish will be making his debut as a director with this film.”

Pankaj Kapur is on a nationwide hunt for the female lead to be cast opposite Shahid Kapoor in his directorial debut Mausam. But his son has other ideas. Apparently, Shahid is keen on casting Katrina Kaif in the lead.
A source reveals, “After working with A-list actresses such as Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Vidya Balan, Katrina Kaif is the next actress on Shahid’s wishlist. He thinks Katrina is extremely talented and would love to work with her in a film. His father’s movie is a love story and Shasha (Shahid) finds Katrina apt for the role.”
Pankaj Kapoor, however, is not terribly keen on Shahid’s recommendation. The source continues, “He has spoken to his dad Pankaj recommending Katrina for the film. But, Pankaj is keen to cast a young fresh face for the film. A nationwide hunt is on for the film.”
The debutant director takes a cautious line. Pankaj Kapoor says, “I am still in the scripting process. My daughter is looking into the casting. Only once I am done with the script, will I be able to take the final call for the female lead.” The movie goes on the floors in January 2010.
Shahid remained unavailable for comment.
