Brazilian model Bruna Abdullah bags a cameo in Dharma’s I Hate Luv Storys

By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 23, 2009)

After doing an item number, Rehem Kare in Anubhav Sinha’s Cash (2007), Brazilian model Bruna Abdullah has bagged a cameo in Karan Johar’s Imran Khan-Sonam Kapoor starrer I Hate Luv Storys.

A source said, “Dia Mirza was director Punit Malhotra’s first choice for the role that Bruna finally bagged. Dia politely denied the offer as she didn’t want to do one more cameo having done one in another Karan film Kurbaan. Punit then started auditioning and decided to cast a relatively new face.”

Somebody recommended Bruna’s name during the auditions and Punit fixed up a meeting with her. “Punit was impressed with Bruna and immediately finalised her for the role. Bruna is a Brazilian and has already started working on her diction and dialogue delivery. This is Bruna’s big break in Bollywood. Although it is a cameo, her role adds substantial weight to the script,” added the source.

First, Bruna’s manager Meenaxi confirmed the news and asked us to email the questions for Bruna.

However, later when we contacted her again, she denied the story and said, “I thought you wanted to speak to her regarding an interview. Bruna has not signed any film.”

After a lot of argument, Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail has been cleared with a U/A certificate and seven slashed scenes

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 23, 2009)

After a lot of mayhem, finally Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail has been given a green signal by the Censor Board, but with a U/A certificate. It was not an easy task for Madhur as the film has seven cuts, including the much talked about Neil’s nude scene. Madhur had a long argument with the Board officials, who were not ready to pass it without the cuts. Madhur had to finally accept the U/A certificate.

A source said, “The censor board was extremely strict. Seven scenes, including a love-making scene between Neil and Mugdha Godse, a homosexual scene, a sex joke and Neil’s nude scene, have all been slashed. Abusive dialogues have also been deleted. While Madhur was unwilling to concede a bit, he was also not ready to release the film with an A certificate.”

Ultimately, Madhur has to bow down to the authorities. He said, “The board wasn’t satisfied with some scenes and had asked me to further blur Neil’s already blurred nude scene. I did put across my arguments, but ultimately accepted the U/A certificate as I want everyone to see the film. It is an eye opener and a hard-hitting film which reflects the judiciary system of our country.”

The Regional Officer of Censor Board said, “Yes, there were certain scenes and dialogue which we found inappropriate and asked the director to remove them. If it is an A certificate film, we are very liberal, but otherwise we have to be strict. We loved the film. It was impressive and well researched. It surely is a thought provoking film but we have to go by the rule book and that’s what we did.”

The actor was shooting for Houseful when he accidentally injured his ear

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 23, 2009)

Over the years, Akshay Kumar has performed some of the most daring stunts in Bollywood and has escaped unhurt. Unfortunately, he wasn’t so lucky while shooting at Madh Island for a fairly simple scene for Sajid Khan’s Houseful on Wednesday night. Akshay had to dive into the deep end of a swimming pool when his timing went awry and water entered his ears. Although Akshay immediately came out of the pool, the damage was already done as the water had reached his ear drums.

Initially, Akshay didn’t realise the impact of the injury. He suddenly complained of excruciating earache at 4am and was immediately rushed to a hospital. A specialist was called for, who asked Akshay to either rest for an entire day in the hospital or at home. Akshay chose to rest at home.

A source said, “Akshay has to report to the sets of his new film Khatta Meetha at Baramati today. A special chopper has been hired to take him there as he isn’t feeling too well due to his ear injury.”

Sajid Khan, director of Houseful, confirmed the news and said, “Yes, Akshay did injure his ear but there is nothing to worry about now.”

After a high profile relationship that has lasted for nearly two years, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra are ready to take the next step. They are finally getting engaged in Mumbai on Saturday, October 24. The quiet engagement ceremony will take place at Raj’s house in Juhu. Shilpa will be wearing a Manish Malhotra outfit.

According to a source, Shilpa’s jewellery will be managed by a leading Bandra store. An official from the jewellery store said, “Shilpa has always been our client. She will look very beautiful with my jewellery. Hopefully, we will be doing her wedding jewellery too.”

It’s surprising though, that Shilpa is getting engaged while her younger sister Shamita is locked up in the Bigg Boss house.

A close friend of Shilpa confirmed Shilpa’s engagement, “Yes, it’s happening very suddenly. Raj proposed to her two days ago when he gifted her a ring for Diwali. Raj is very keen that they formalise their relationship. Shilpa consulted her parents and accepted the proposal.”

The event will be attended only by the Shetty and Kundra family members. “Invitations have been sent out, but only to a few select people. As far as the film industry goes, very few of her colleagues know about her sudden mangni. Shilpa is on top of the world,” Shilpa’s friend added.

The marriage is slated for early 2010. “In fact, they may tie the knot as soon as Shamita comes out of the Bigg Boss house,” Shilpa’s friend said.

Despite repeated calls and messages, Shilpa remained unavailable for comment.

Manish Malhotra describes the saree he has designed for her, “It’s a pink chiffon saree with a very delicate border and a dull gold blouse, embellished with a very pretty piece of jewellery. She has such a vivacious personality that she doesn’t need anything to enhance it.”

Rajesh Khanna agrees to enter Bigg Boss as a wildcard entry

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 23, 2009)

Rajesh Khanna is destined to be part of Bigg Boss 3. The veteran actor, who will now be introduced as a wildcard entry in the show within the next two weeks, was a strong contender when the channel was finalising the contestants a few days before the show was about to be aired. However, he wasn’t finalised because of dillydallying at that point of time.

“The main  problem with Mr Khanna was he wanted  permission to be allowed to drink  within the house. We  couldn’t  allow him  that,”  says a source from the channel.

Things have changed now. With Kamaal R Khan’s inglorious booting-out on Wednesday, the channel is once again negotiating with Rajesh Khanna. This  time Rajesh Khanna says he’s willing to give up on his hard drinks till he is inside the house because, apparently, he finds the friction, tension and drama on theshow far more  intoxicating than the drinks.

A highly-placed source from  the channel confirms and says, “We’ve  opened up negotiations with Mr Khanna  and he has  agreed to be  on  the show. We  will be introducing   him  in the  show as a  wildcard entry in  the next two weeks.”

Interestingly, rumours have it that Rajesh  Khanna’s superstar son-in-law Akshay Kumar was opposed  to the idea  of  his father-in-law participating in the reality show.

“If  this  is  true  then  Mr Khanna must be  all  the more inclined to  do so. He  doesn’t like to be  told what  to do,” adds the source.

Incidentally, Rajesh Khanna will be paid the highest amount ever  given to  a contestant. Given that Khanna was Bollywood’s first superstar, it will be interesting to see him interact with the reality show’s pop philosopher Amitabh Bachchan who had taken over as the superstar after him.

Twenty stars to do the catwalk for a good cause

NICOLE DASTUR Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; October 23, 2009)

When Naresh Goyal’s 20-year-old daughter Namrata Goyal, who is Shabana Azmi’s godchild, went to the village Mijwan in UP with the actress-cum-activist for the first time, she came back with an idea. Such was the life transforming experience for her.

To rewind a bit — Shabana Azmi’s NGO Mijwan Welfare Society (MWS), which was started by her father Kaifi Azmi, has been doing noteworthy work for the betterment of the villagers of Mijwan. When Namrata was amidst the villagers, she too was inspired to do something for their welfare. And that’s how
‘Mijwan — Sonnets in Fabric’, a fashion show with a difference was born, to raise funds to set up a District Learning Centre in the village. “I have always believed in the power of youth to act as catalysts for change. Fifty percent of India is under 25 years, they can change the world if they are motivated to get involved and tap into their own reserves of strength,” says Shabana.

SA The fashion contest-cum-show will
also serve as a platform for fashion designing students to showcase their talent. Students from five fashion and design institutes will take part in an inter-collegiate contest where shortlisted students will be mentored by designers Manish Malhotra and Anita Dongre, and their creations will be showcased by top stars and models including Karan Johar, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Abhay Deol, Malaika Arora-Khan, R Madhavan, Konkana SenSharma, Dia Mirza, Prachi Desai, Raima Sen, Boman Irani, Arshad Warsi, Sandhya Mridul, Mona Singh, Tupur and Tapur Chatterjee, Aditi Govitrikar, Diandra Soares, Alesia Raut and Dipannita Sharma. The show, to be held in December, will be compered by Mandira Bedi, styled by Manish and Anita and judged by eminent names. “These stars are youth icons and it will be a huge boost for these students to have their creations showcased by them,” says Shabana, adding that she is grateful to all the stars and designers for being a part of this venture absolutely free of cost. ad

HOT: Kareena and Saif get ready to kiss in their next film

Saif Ali Khan, who’s romantically linked with Kareena Kapoor on screen for the first time and also kisses her

TIMES NEWS NETWORK (BOMBAY TIMES; October 23, 2009)

Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan fans can heave a sigh of relief. Bollywood’s Jodi No 1, seen at fashion shows, parties, holidays abroad but never together on screen, are finally a couple in Karan Johar’s next film Kurbaan (directed by Rensil D’Silva). It’s releasing late November and has Saifeena (as the couple is popularly known in Bollywood in context to the Brangelinas and TomKats of Hollywood) romantically linked, sharing a kiss, making steamy love and what have you…
Their pairing in the film that deals with terrorism in the US, goes beyond glamour, stardom, style and sophistication. Saif, naturally, would rather downplay the kissing and lovemaking in the film. “There’s much more to the film than intimate scenes,” he promises. “But, yes, the intimate moments are bold and honest. Just as the action scenes are raw and bloody. And the songs, genuine and real. Or the story — brutal and shocking.”

He’s conscious of the risk of capitalising on or sensationalising the fact that Kareena and he are
involved off-screen as well. Or that audiences, jaded by the knowledge they the actors know each other so well, might not find their intimacy on screen exciting enough. “But what happens in Kurbaan,” argues Saif, “is that two great actors — if I may call myself that — come together and do what they’re best at. This is what Kareena and I do to earn our living. It’s been widely reported on our holidays and days off… now you see it on screen.”
Kareena was unavailable for comment. Or, maybe she’s not the kiss and tell type of actress.
