Frieda Pinto introduced boyfriend Dev Patel to her parents during a secret Christmas trip to Mumbai

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 05, 2010)

It’s a love story that’s been brewing for a while now, though both Dev Patel and his Slumdog Millionaire co-star Freida Pinto have carefully avoided either confirming or denying it in public. But after Dev’s mother confirmed that they are seeing each other, another little development seems to underline that the relationship may be headed towards more official territory.

Freida Pinto and Dev Patel

In a hush-hush visit, Frieda came to visit her parents in Mumbai over Christmas — and guess who accompanied her?

“Freida and Dev were in Mumbai last week for a couple of days. Dev visited her home in Malad where Freida introduced him to her parents and family,” reveals a source. “Dev was down here with a couple of his friends from London and they also partied in Mumbai. Freida took them around and in fact, both of them were seen at Hawaiian Shack. But they wanted to keep this visit low profile and made sure that their itinerary was kept under wraps.”

When contacted, actor Mridul Singhvi (who also manages the Bandra nightspot), confirmed, “Yes, Dev and Freida were here with a couple of friends on Wednesday night. We dedicated the song ‘Paper Planes’ from Slumdog Millionaire to them. We all were very excited to see them but they were extremely hesitant about their pictures being clicked. They came in at about 11.30 in the night and were there till the time the club closed at around 1.30am. However they weren’t very social and stuck to a corner on the 3rd floor.”

After almost five years, accomplished actor Saurabh Shukla returns to the director’s chair with RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI?, a film that’s making the right buzz. Making an adult comedy that talks of one night stand is tough. But giving the serious issue a humorous take is tougher.

RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI? is about relationships and also looks at the philanderers, who, despite being committed, don’t mind having a PYT in a closet, for no strings attached fun.

You may draw parallels with THE HANGOVER because the protagonist can’t recall anything that happened the previous night. But it must also be said that the film throws a few surprises, which makes it completely different from any film, past or present.

BY BOLLYWOOD HUNGAMA.COM

But there’s one factor that throws a spanner. There’s not much meat in the story. Also, it unravels at an excruciatingly slow pace. In fact, the wheels start moving only towards the penultimate 20 odd minutes, when the answers start coming.

In a nutshell, RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI? offers a few laughs, not laughter unlimited!

Rahul [Rajat Kapoor] wakes up with a bad hangover after a party the night before. There, he had met a sexy young woman Sophia [Neha Dhupia]. They got drunk and there were sparks flying. But Rahul doesn’t remember what happened after that. Did they go all the way?

His wife Mitali [Irawati Harshe Mayadev] is in a particularly bad mood and Rahul suspects that she might know about his little escapade last night. Rahul starts chasing his night, trying to retrieve it, trying to find out what really happened.

His friends Saxena [Dalip Tahil] and Amit [Vinay Pathak] are going through their own marital crisis of sorts. Driven to his wits end, he realizes that he must meet Sophia again to get the answers.

Almost three decades ago, Basu Chatterjee made an adult comedy called SHAUKEEN, which told the story of three men who eye a pretty girl, who’s completely oblivious of their intentions. In this film too, director Saurabh Shukla looks at three men with a roving eye.

Sadly, the screenplay [writers: Saurabh Shukla and Rajat Kapoor] falls woefully short in terms of generating interest. In fact, till three-fourths of the movie, there’s not much movement in the story, except for a few humour-laden sequences. It also moves lethargically and is unnecessarily slack.

Ankur Tewari’s music is strictly functional. Fuwad Khan’s cinematography captures the varied moods well.

The film scores in the performance department. Every member of the cast – Neha Dhupia, Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Dalip Tahil, Irawati Harshe Mayadev, Anu Menon, Navniit Nisshan and Aamir Bashir – deliver fine performances. Especially Rajat and Vinay. Ranvir Shorey, Makrand Deshpande and Sudhir Mishra appear in cameos.

On the whole, RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI? doesn’t work.

RAAT GAYI BAAT GAYI releases on the last day of the year, 31st December. If this wasn’t surprising enough, the fact is that the date also falls on a Thursday. Wait, there is more. There are two more films slated for release on the same day – ACCIDENT ON HILL ROAD and BOLO RAAM, hence adding on to the crowd. Moreover, there is this entire 3 IDIOTS euphoria which is expected to spill over well into the second week. With so much happening around the release of this Neha Dhupia, Rajat Kapoor and Vinay Pathak starrer, was it a justified decision to arrive on this day?

“Yes, coming on 31st December is a very good decision”, says director Saurabh Shukla who has earlier made MUDDA – THE ISSUE and CHEHRA, “I will give you two reasons for that. First and foremost the film is actually about a party. Since it would be party mood for all on 31st Dec and 1st January, the story in the film fits in perfectly well with real life too.”

He goes on to explain the second reason. “Those who may not catch it on 31st December night would want to do so on the next day since it’s a holiday. And that’s because after 31st December hangover, there are only two ways to fight it. One is to drink again and another is to actually go for a movie. This is why our suggestion is ‘Why to drink again when you can have some good time in theaters while watching a movie?’

Salman Khan is currently off women; he brings in his 45th birthday at a party at his farm in Panvel, for which no women are invited

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 28, 2009)

Salman Khan is well-known in Bollywood circles for his wild parties. If the party happens to be his birthday bash and that too at his farmhouse at Panvel, it promises to be double the fun. However, yesterday night, Salman had a low-key celebration for his 45th birthday. He had a stag party.

A source says, “Bhai is known to have fun during his parties at Panvel. His parties are much awaited and talked about by his guests. Salman’s large-heartedness ensures that all of them have a blast. However, this year, Salman is not in one of his merry moods. After his break-up with Katrina Kaif, he is not in the mood to go all out and celebrate. So, on his special day, he did not send invitations to any female. He did not feel the need to have a girlfriend by his side or even bask in the glory of any other female company. Incidentally, Katrina is in London to celebrate Christmas and New Year with her family. Salman has invited only his close male friends. Also, unlike every year, the celebration this time is not on a lavish scale. Yesterday’s party was held only for his close friends music composers Sajid Wajid, hairstylist Aalim Hakim, his bodyguard Shera, his close associate Nadeem, his filmmaker friends Vijay Galani and  Sajid Nadiadwala among others. Salman has already celebrated his birthday with his family on Saturday night.”

Let’s hope that by next year, the tide turns and the large-hearted Khan gets back to hosting lavish parties.

Shivangi Kolhapure talks about living life on her own terms

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 26, 2009)

Shakti Kapoor’s wife Shivangi Kolhapure prefers Canada over Mumbai. She even got her Canadian citizenship three years ago. But she is now in Mumbai to support her daughter, Shraddhaa, who debuts with Teen Patti. A source close to her family said, “Shivangi spends a lot of time in Canada. She is in Mumbai because the release of her daughter Shraddhaa’s film Teen Patti is round the corner.”

Shivangi is quite excited about Shraddhaa’s film. She said, “Shraddhaa got offers from many filmmakers, but she refused them all. Most of them wanted to make quick films to be released before Teen Patti. It would have been unethical to sign those films.”

But why did she move to Canada? Shivangi said, “It’s an open economy out there. I want to make movies in Canada. I am very excited about my plans.” Doesn’t she miss her family? She said, “They certainly miss me. But they know I want to structure my life this way. Shraddhaa was studying in Boston, so she was near me. My son Siddhanth was busy studying in London. So, there was no problem until now.”

Did the decision to spend time in Canada stem from her discomfort over the media glare? After all, her husband Shakti Kapoor is no stranger to controversy. Shivangi replied cautiously, “Not at all. I am not running away. I really like it this way. Think about it, there was a controversy around Siddhanth too. In fact, he was the only guy who tested negative in that party that was busted by the cops. Did anybody write about that?”

Yuvraj Singh got worked up when he saw his ex, Kim Sharma, getting too comfortable with Abhishek Kapoor at a party

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 24, 2009)

It’s never a good idea to be in the same room with an ex and a current partner. Kim Sharma found herself in this unenviable situation when her ex, Yuvraj Singh, made an appearance at  a party where she was getting rather cosy with her ‘good friend’ Abhishek Kapoor.

Sparks were bound to fly and this time, they threatened to scald poor Abhishek.

When the cricketer entered the party, he simply greeted Kim formally. But the Zen state didn’t last long as watching his ex with another man seems to have rekindled his possessive streak. He was annoyed and went up to Abhishek. A major argument ensued and Kim decided to leave the venue with Yuvraj.

Our source said, “Kim tried to salvage the situation. She asked both of them to calm down.” Things were normal for some time, but Kim and Yuvraj shocked everyone when they left the party together.

Kim and Abhishek refused to comment on the story.

Estranged lovebirds, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, who were not on talking terms, broke the ice at a party held on Saturday

By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 21, 2009)

A few days ago, we had carried a story about how Ranbir Kapoor wanted to get back with his ex-girlfriend Deepika Padukone (Mumbai Mirror, December 4, Ranbir wants Deepika back). The opportunity came knocking on Saturday night when the duo was invited to a party hosted by jewellery designer Maheep Kapoor and fashion designer Nandita Mahtani. Although it wasn’t Ranbir who made the first move, those present at the party were successful in getting the estranged couple to talk.

A source present at the party says, “The party which was held after a fashion show, was a star-studded, high-profile bash. Shah Rukh Khan was present with his usual gang of friends, Karan Johar, Arjun Rampal with wife Mehr, costume designer Shabina Khan and Ritesh Deshmukh. Sonam Kapoor (who was once reportedly dating Ranbir) was also present at the party and so was Nandita’s boyfriend Dino Morea. Deepika stuck to her Houseful co-star Ritesh’s side throughout, while Ranbir was seen socialising with everyone. Though aware of the presence of each other, both Ranbir and Deepika avoided eye contact. The cold vibes was sensed by one and all.”

It was evident that the estranged lovebirds were deliberately avoiding each other. The source adds, “To cut the cold vibes, Karan and Shabina took the initiative to get the two talking. Everyone joined hands and kept pushing Ranbir and Deepika close to each other. Eventually their effort and persuasion paid off and the ice began to thaw.  It happened when the duo was forced to sit at the same table, next to each other. They began by gradually exchanging smiles and later, a few words. It was just a matter of time till the couple began having a full blown conversation.”

There was a sigh of relief and happiness all around.

We messaged Ranbir and Deepika to confirm the story but both remained unavailable for comment.
