Raaja Mukherjee, who has been associated with a lot of television serials as a producer, is now working on his first home production – LIFE ISE GALE LAGA LE. It is written and directed by Yogesh Pagare. Shooting is scheduled to start in January 2010 and the film is expected to be wrapped up in 45 days.

Asked if Rani will also star or will have any role to play in or around the movie, Raaja replied, “Rani’s good wishes and support is always there for her family and in all their ventures.”

Starring Adhyayan Suman, Divya Dutta, Sushant Singh, Aushima Sawhney, Rishi, Rahul Dev, introducing Vaibhavi Upadhyay, Puneet Vashist, Anita Hassanandani and Himani Shivpuri, LIFE ISE GALE LAGA LE is a reverse journey from death to life. The tracks are composed by music director Lalit Pandit.

BLUE WILL GIVES YOU BLUES!!

No matter how grand a film is, how wonderfully it has been promoted or which big names associated are with it, if its content is bad, then nothing can save the film. Blue comes in this category. The film was so nicely publicized, the promos looked rocking, Akki-Sanju pairing seemed electrifying and Lara Dutta’s bikini scenes had sent the youth in frenzy. Unfortunately, the film’s story is pathetic and thus, the film disappoints…big time!

The story of the movie: Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) is an honest guy staying in Bahamas and has a girlfriend, Mona (Lara Dutta). His best friend is Aarav (Akshay Kumar), a rich and over ambitious businessman. One fine morning, Sagar’s younger brother, Sameer aka Sam (Zayed Khan) arrives at Sagar’s place after staying in Bangkok for 5 years. Sam hasn’t come there just to meet his folks for a few days-he had ran away from Bangkok after taking panga with a gangster Gulshan (Rahul Dev) there. On the other hand, there is a treasure lying deep under the sea, somewhere near Bahamas, and Aarav persuades Sagar to join him in finding the treasure. But Sagar has reservations about it which is connected to his past.

In just 15 minutes, you get a hint that the director is unfit and doesn’t know his job well. The opening credits scene was brilliant. But the following scenes and also the boxing sequence hold attention initially but the interest soon wears off. The movie then focuses on Zayed Khan which was the best part of the first hour. But the story hardly moves once Zayed comes to Bahamas and joins Sanju and his team and this happens till the intermission point. In between, there two songs are thrown in, ‘Chiggy Wiggy’ and Blue Theme, which serve no purpose to the main storyline.

The actual treasure hunting begins in the last 30 minutes and you expect fireworks right till the climax. But alas…it was plain lackluster. The director could have included added more thrills or at least some twists and surprises. Sure, there is a twist in the end but that doesn’t work big time. Also the climax was so lame!

Talking about flaws, there are plenty. What is striking is-the treasure is part of India’s wealth and was coming to India in a ship in 1949. But when the ship sank, no effort was made by the Indian Govt or for that matter, any adventurer to get hold of it. Although there were stories that the captain of the ship took away the treasure, still no one tried even investigating this case and that too for 5 decades! Very hard to digest!

However, the film scores at a few places. The bike race and the following chase scene involving Zayed Khan rocks! Another bike scene post-interval, which also involved a train, was also well-shot. And the best scene of the film was when the goons attack Sanjay’s place. Simply outstanding! So you can see, only the action sequences hold attention. And the film, overall, is a damp squib!

It’s a treat to see Sanjay Dutt in every film and in Blue too, he does a great job. Although he looked a bit fat places, overall, he gives a smashing performance. Akshay Kumar steals the show. He also raises a few laughs in between and was perfect for this role. However, it’s really disappointing to see Akshay Kumar in pathetic films lately. Let’s hope De Dana Dan (his next with Priyadarshan) works. Zayed Khan looked dashing and charming. The world may denounce him but I feel that he has the potential and can reach the top, if given an opportunity.

I really feel bad for Lara Dutta. When she signed Blue, she didn’t know swimming and she dedicatedly learnt how to swim in just three months and became a pro. However, she hardly has any contribution to the main plot of the film. In fact, one can argue that there was no need for her character in the film at all! Really very unfortunate! Rahul Dev was okay and Kabir Bedi doesn’t have a single dialogue in the film. Katrina Kaif is stunning while Kylie Minogue oozes oomph!

A R Rahman’s music was good, but nothing special. The Blue Theme, Chiggy Wiggy and Aaj Dil are the best songs of the lot. Rahman’s background score sounded modern and fresh.

Laxman Utekar’s cinematography was eye-catching. The underwater cinematography by Pete Zuccarini was outstanding and the underwater scenes really looked stunning. Oscar winner Resul Pookutty strikes a sixer with his marvelous sound designing. Fantastic job! The locales (Bahamas) are excellent.

Some of the dialogues (Mayur Puri) stand out. While the crew did their job wonderfully, the story and the script (Anthony D’Souza and Jasmine D’Souza) spoil and ruin the show. Same goes for direction by Anthony. He had everything-a producer who was ready to invest large amounts of money, top actors of the current period, an excellent crew (including some from Hollywood) and what not. But alas! Did Anthony feel that people are going to praise his film just by showing them some wonderful underwater scenes and handful of action sequences? The producer, Dhilin Mehta, is equally to blame. What was he thinking when he invested 90 crs+ on such a flawed script and on a debutant director? My blood boils to see huge amounts of money going waste, which could had been utilized in a better way. We are a pro when it comes to lifting/copying/inspiring from Hollywood flicks. Then why can’t we have a Hollywood-like terrific direction and screenplay? Really very very disappointing!

On the whole, Blue is a big time disappointment. The film’s cast and crew have done a brilliant job but the film fails to impress because of its faulty script. Blue should fail (and it will, for sure, keeping in mind its high cost) at the Box office so that it gives a lesson to all producers in Bollywood that investing large amounts of money on faulty scripts and taking audiences for granted will result in big losses and disaster.

BLUE, the most awaited movie of the year, with its canvas as huge as the ocean, comes alive on the Hindi screen this Friday. Like every biggie, this one also comes with the baggage of monumental expectations. With tremendous hype surrounding it, the inescapable question that crosses your mind is, will BLUE live up to those colossal expectations?

Let me keep it concise and to the point. You haven’t watched something like this on the Hindi screen before. Never ever!

It requires courage, willpower, fortitude, vision and of course, the financial backing to accomplish a project of this magnitude. And debutante director Anthony D’Souza puts his skills and the financial resources to best use. BLUE is not merely a stunning looking film, it’s also a well structured film. Most importantly, it’s a solid entertainer that packs in so much in those 1.58 hours.

Final word? Go, grab a ticket, if you haven’t booked one yet. This under-sea treasure hunt is a kickass film. A must-see for all those who love adventure flicks.

BLUE is set in the sun-soaked white sand beaches of Bahamas. Sagar [Sanjay Dutt] is a simpleton, while his friend Aarav [Akshay Kumar] is a rich, ambitious businessman.

Sagar’s brother Sameer aka Sam [Zayed Khan] has inadvertently managed to rankle the mafia in Bangkok [Rahul Dev]. He flees Bangkok and arrives in Bahamas. But the dangerous men reach Bahamas too. Sagar is the sole person who can bail him out from this crisis, but to save his brother, Sagar has to wrestle with the ghost of his dead father.

If you’re a die-hard moviegoer, you’d draw parallels with a lot of international projects [especially THE DEEP] that were set in the ocean. In Bollywood, flashes of the Dharmendra – Jeetendra starrer SAMRAAT cross your mind instantaneously, but comparing the two is akin to comparing chalk and cheese.

BLUE grabs your attention from its opening titles itself. The marine life, which you may’ve watched on National Geographic Channel or Animal Planet, comes alive in all splendour at the start itself.

The story is uncomplicated and Anthony D’Souza garnishes it beautifully. If the aquatic life keeps your eyes wide open, the action sequences are sure to make your jaws drop to your knees. The bike chase at the start, yet another chase subsequently, the chase soon after the interval [atop a running train] is simply astounding.

Anthony’s expertise comes to the fore in several sequences. One sequence that needs to be singled out is when Sanju narrates the tragic past, how he was responsible for his father’s death. It’s simply incredible!

Major portions of the film have been filmed in the ocean and you can’t stop admiring and appreciating the enormous contribution of the underwater cinematographer [Pete Zuccarini]. The lighting in those sequences deserves special mention. Also, the underwater sequences, which feature aquatic life like puffer fish, stingrays and sharks, hold tremendous appeal. Cinematography [Laxman Utekar] is gorgeous.

On the flip side, the climax could’ve been more impactful. The villain’s track looks clichéd, but you tend to overlook the minor aberration since the film never falls prey to mediocrity.

Anthony D’Souza is a director to watch. This film has style as well as substance. Also, it requires courage and conviction to think out of the box and most importantly, execute the material with panache. There’s not much scope for music in an action thriller, yet A.R. Rahman’s score suits the requirements. The Kylie Minogue track – ‘Chiggy Wiggy’ – is already popular. Sanju and Lara’s romantic track – ‘Aaj Dil’ – is sensuous. The song at the end credits – ‘Fiqrana’ – has a lot of energy.

Sound design [Resul Pookutty] is fantastic. Action scenes [James D. Bomalick and R.P. Yadav] are a treat and, in fact, one of the mainstays of the film. Dialogues [Mayur Puri] are effective, while the screenplay [Anthony D’Souza and Jasmine D’Souza] is well thought-out, especially towards the second hour.

Sanjay Dutt carries his part well, although he looks very well-fed in some scenes. Akshay Kumar steals the show with a sterling performance. This would easily classify amongst his best works. Zayed Khan is highly competent. This, despite the fact that he’s sharing the screen space with two hugely experienced actors.

Lara Dutta has never looked so good before. Though the story revolves around the guys, you can’t overlook Lara’s small but significant contribution to the film. Katrina Kaif [sp. app.] looks gorgeous and performs exceedingly well. The feminine charm [at the start specifically] would send the youth in a frenzy. Rahul Dev is first-rate. Kabir Bedi is hardly there.

On the whole, BLUE has style as well as substance. The film has everything going in its favour, right from its incredible star cast to the superb action scenes to the hitherto unseen marine life to the tremendous hype and hoopla. At the box-office, BLUE will strike like a hurricane in the festive week. It should set new benchmarks in days to come. In short, the business will be humungous.

SIX HINDI FILMS THIS FRIDAY!

There would be no biggies for the next four weeks. The Ramzan month has commenced, during which a sizeable chunk of audience stay away from the theatres. Taking advantage of this, every year, a number of small and medium budget films hit the theatres in this holy month. The producers of such films hope that their film would do a good business in the absence of any biggie. Last year, ‘A Wednesday!’, 1920 and Welcome To Sajjanpur released during Ramzan and became hits.

And this year too, lots of small-budget films are all set to hit the screens. These films failed to get a proper release before the Ramzan as all weeks were booked by the biggies, owing to the producer’s strike which happened in summer. And this has resulted in a chaotic situation as around 20 films are planning to release in this month! 2 of them released last Friday-Shadow and Sikandar. In fact, tomorrow, as many as 6 films are all set to hit the theatres. These films are Daddy Cool, Kisaan, Quick Gun Murugun, Toss, Yeh Mera India and Love Khichdi!

Any layman can understand that it is indeed foolish for 6 films to release on a single day. And we should not forget the 2 Hollywood films that are also releasing tomorrow- Race To Witch Mountain and The Taking of Pelham 123. So this takes the number of films arriving tomorrow to 8! Madness!

But if observed, then producers don’t have much of a choice. If they won’t release their films now, then they won’t be able to do so till the end of 2009. Once the month of Ramzan ends, biggies will start releasing week after week. And releasing a small budget film with a biggie can be suicidal. So, they prefer releasing it with half-a-dozen other small films. Still, I fail to understand why only two films released last week and 6 films are releasing this Friday. What I mean is-2 of the films releasing tomorrow could have instead released last week. This would have made the situation less chaotic.

QGMOut of these 6, Quick Gun Murugan surely has an edge over the others. It is a spoof of western cowboy and Rajanikant films and its promos have been impressive. The film is releasing in 4 languages-English, Hindi and Tamil and Telegu. Kisaan (*Sohail Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Jackie Shroff, Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi and Rahul Dev) has the ability to do a great job in the North. Daddy Cool doesn’t have much chance. It is an official remake of the popular Hollywood film Death At a Funeral and is backed by Big Pictures. There are hardly any promos on TV which show as to what the film is actually about. Toss is the popular Ranvijay’s debut film, Yeh Mera India looks hard hitting while Love Khichdi’s promos started just a week ago! But these three films have dim chances of succeeding in this rat race due to no hype.

There’s a possibility that the next two weeks will also see 4/5/6 films releasing. God save all these films!

DHAN TE NAN IS NOT ORIGINAL!

dhan te nanThe song which has taken the entire nation by storm, Kaminey’s Dhan Te Nan is not an original song! Yes, you read it right! It was used around a decade back in Gubbare, a popular serial at that time on Zee TV comprising of short comedy stories. But before you blame composer Vishal Bharadwaj of being Pritam-2, here’s the entire truth-Vishal Bharadwaj himself had composted the Gubbare’s Dhan Te Nan! In fact, he was also the director of the episode in which the song is played. And even the lyricist for both the songs is the same (Gulzar)!

Although Bharadwaj did some changes in Kaminey’s Dhan Te Nan, there are many similarities in both of these versions. Even the line ‘Teli ka tel’ was incorporated in the original song. I wonder, why no one’s sentiments were hurt at that time?! Anyways, I’ve uploaded the original below. Do watch it and have a laugh! DO NOT MISS IT!

GET READY FOR THE FINAL 2 BIGGIES OF THE SEASON!

Aha! This weekend would be fantastic! 2 biggies are all set to compete with each other! Some of the big names of the industry are associated with these 2 films. While Vishal Bharadwaj’s Kaminey is produced by the highly respected Ronnie Screwvala of UTV Motion Pictures and stars Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, Life Partner is important as its Abbas-Mustan’s first produced film.

Talking about Kaminey, the film has created utmost curiosity since the time its promo was unveiled in Feb-end during Delhi-6. The teaser was novel and it really made moviegoers wait for the film. Not to forget, the director of the, Vishal Bharadwaj, is counted as one of the finest directors of Bollywood today. Shahid’s double role has impressed everyone and his pairing with Priyanka Chopra gave a new story to tabloids that they both are seeing each other. Then Mumbai Mirror newspaper stated as to how they broke up and that they are coming up with strange ideas so as to avoid bumping into each other while promoting Kaminey. But last week, they both came together at an event for promotion! Wonder what Mumbai Mirror has to say about this!

The Dhan Te Nan song has further increased the hype for the film. So almost every moviegoer feel the film is going to rock. Thus, the film will surely take a great opening. Moreover, Friday 14th is a holiday (Gokulashtmi) and Independence Day is on Saturday. Also, Parsi New Year falls on Wednesday 19th. Moviegoers will definitely go for Kaminey in huge numbers during these holidays. Kaminey is such a lucky product, indeed!

However, Kaminey should turn out to be a good product, only then it’ll sustain in theatres for a long time and make a huge profit. Or else, it may fizzle out after a huge opening. Also, the film has been unfortunately awarded an ‘A’ certificate by the Censor Board. The film doesn’t have explicit violence or abusive words and Vishal tried to explain this but unfortunately, his plea fell on deaf ears. And due to this, the film may fail to attract the under-18 crowd.

On the other hand, Life Partner is complete opposite of Kaminey! It looks like a light cute and funny film. The interesting part of it is that it’s the film of Abbas-Mustan as a producer. The director duo has provided finest films to the viewers since more than a decade. I always used to feel as to why they don’t turn into producers since they already are in the industry since a long time. Finally, they got into production and launched their production house, Burmawala Bros, with Life Partner as their first film. But they’ll be investing on film of every genre.

What interests you in the promos of Life Partner is the Fardeen-Genelia pairing-they look wonderful together! The film may turn out to be damn entertaining. However, it has a huge competition in the form of Kaminey and it may hugely affect Life Partner’s collections. Let’s hope both films turn out to be good and that both films are able to do a good job at the BO!

People staying in Mumbai, Thane and Pune won’t be able to catch both the films till Saturday as all theatres and multiplexes are closed down, thanks to swine flu scare. Cineplexes should start from Sunday onwards. Let’s hope it does!

MERE DESH KI DHARTI SONA UGLE-REMIX!

The makers of Kisaan (*ing Sohail Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Jackie Shroff, Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi, Rahul Dev) have come up with a novel way of promoting their film. They have developed a remix of Upkaar’s famous song, Mere Desh Ki Dharti, and have incorporated in the film. The song has already started being aired on TV. The first thing that comes in my mind is that how the makers got the rights of the song. That’s all thanks to Salim Khan (father of Sohail and Arbaaz) who persuaded close friend Manoj Kumar to let them use the song.

I happen to see the song two days back and I was disappointed hugely. They have completely tampered with the song and the video doesn’t impress at all. That’s what I felt. I’ve uploaded the song below-please do watch and let me know your view on it!

In Bollywood nowadays, we normally get to see right scripts falling into wrong hands. Or we see wrong scripts falling into wrong hands (classic eg: Kambakkht Ishq!). But very rarely, we get to see right scripts reaching the right hands! Sankat City, the new small movie with entertains big time, comes in this category. It comes under the category of all the madcap comic capers that we are exposed to since years. Yet, it stands out due to its treatment which makes it ‘a masala entertainer for the classes’!

The story of the movie: Guru (Kay Kay Menon) is a petty thief who is an expert in stealing cars (and even towing vans!). His modus operandi is excellent-he steals a car, takes it to his partner-in-crime, Ganpat (Dilip Prabhawalkar) who repaints the car and Guru then sells it to Sharafat (Shri Vallabh Vyas) and makes a nice profit. Unfortunately, one day, Guru steals a swanky Merc which was parked outside a brothel. In the dikky, Guru is pleasantly surprised to find a bag containing Rs. 1 Crore. The money belonged to Fauzdar (Anupam Kher), a gangster-cum-moneylender and the money was to be sent to Gogi (Manoj Pahwa), a financially crippled film producer. Mona (Rimi Sen), Sikandar Khan (Chunky Pandey), Pachisia (Yashpal Sharma), Philip (Hemant Pandey), Guruji (Virendra Saxena) and others are the rest of the characters of the film. How the characters are inter-connected with each other forms the rest of the story.

Sankat City has a fast-paced narrative and doesn’t waste unnecessary time at all. The characters are quickly and wonderfully established in the first 10 minutes itself. The film excellently scores in the writing department. In most comic flicks, the situations and the humour are senseless and completely illogical most of the times. In the case of Sankat City, comic situations arise in situation which looks realistic and justified. And that’s one point where the film scores big time!

One gets the feel of the power of the script when it’s revealed how all the characters are wonderfully connected to each other. There are ample moments where the film would have fallen like a pack of cards but writer/director Pankaj Advani holds the script amazingly and doesn’t let it go on the wrong path.

There are numerous humour sequences in the film. The conversations of Guru and Ganpat were fabulous. Ganpat getting injured and the bomb blast sequence were the funniest scenes of the first half. In the second half, the scene shot inside BEST Bus was undoubtedly the best scene of the film! Hats off to the director for thinking something like this!

Now to the flaws. The film is perfectly executed. However, the scene where Guru makes a bomb hoax call and the sequence that follows looked a bit unrealistic, although it will be wrong to say that it wasn’t funny. And secondly, the film was very badly promoted. A film with such a fabulous cast would have easily attracted audiences if it was well publicized. It’s unfortunate that a big producer like Moser Baer failed to arouse curiosity for its own film.

The film has more than dozen characters and it’s impossible to say who performed the best. Kay Kay Menon was as usual in full form and it was great to see him in a comic role after a long time. Same for Anupam Kher who was seen in a negative role after years. Rimi Sen looked charming and gave an excellent performance. I wish we get to see more of her. Chunky Pandey irritated a lot in Paying Guests but was terrific here in Sankat City. He was there in a double role and did complete justice to both the characters. Dilip Prabhawalkar was totally hilarious. Yashpal Sharma also managed to raise quite a many laughs! Virendra Saxena does the most unique role of his life and performs perfectly. Manoj Pahwa also did a good job. Hemant Pandey, Shri Vallabh Vyas, Sanjay Mishra, Jehangir Khan, Rahul Dev and Gurpal Singh were good.

Ranjit Barot’s music suits the movie well. Best song was without doubt, ‘Ghoom Ghoom’. All those looking for some hatke music should listen to all the 3 songs of this film! Chirantan Das’ cinematography was flawless.

Finally, the winner of the film is Pankaj Advani, who wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues and also directed the film. It seems he is inspired by Phir Hera Pheri, One Two Three and other such mindless comedies but yet he managed to come up with such a fine, rich product. He used his brains creatively and did complete justice to all the numerous characters that were there in the film. And although he came up with an excellent script, he executed it wonderfully and that’s where he won completely! Hats off to this person and let’s hope he comes up with such great films in future too!

On the whole, Sankat City is a brilliant entertainer. With so many mindless entertainers nowadays, a film like this brings a welcome change. Watch it if you are starved of entertainment. Or at least, recommend it to as many moviegoers as possible. This film needs or rather, deserves to be watched!
