A dead-drunk, rich daddy’s girl barged into Salman Khan’s private party and slapped him in front of everybody. This after she had abused Sushmita Sen and Sohail Khan

By Akela and Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 18, 2009)

He may be notorious as the bad boy of Bollywood but Salman Khan is anything but disrespectful toward women. How else would one explain his unfazed demeanor despite being provoked to the extent of being slapped by a girl? The shocking incident took place during a recent private party held in Delhi where a rich builder’s high-spirited daughter Monika allegedly barged into Salman’s private party and slapped him.

According to sources, she also ended up abusing Sushmita Sen, Sohail Khan and other guests who were present at the party. Ignoring the hullaballoo, the actor kept his cool and asked the security guards to show a sozzled Monika the way out.

A source from the party says, “After the fashion show by Sanjana Jon, a private party was being held at a five-star hotel in Delhi. Present there were Salman, Sohail Khan, Sushmita Sen, her brother Rajiv Sen, Raima and Riya Sen, Amaan and Ayaan Ali Khan, Shibani Kashyap, boxing champ Vijender Singh, a few Bollywood biggies and prominent politicos. The party, which went on till the wee hours of morning, was not without its fair share of drama. A sloshed Monika accompanied by a male friend first tried to forcefully enter the party venue. She was too loud and completely out of control because of her inebriated state. Sohail Khan, who was standing close to the entrance, saw the hungama and asked the security guards not to let Monika in.”

“Meanwhile, Salman heard the commotion and walked to where Monika was making a fuss. She was misbehaving and started bragging about her connections and abused Sushmita Sen. When Salman very politely asked the girl to leave, she suddenly slapped the actor,” adds the source.

A crowd gathered and the guards whisked away the girl. “Known for his infamous temper, surprisingly, Salman did not retaliate even once. He kept his cool and went inside with Sohail after the girl was taken away,” says the source.

Despite repeated attempts at trying to talk to Monika’s friend, he said he was busy with somebody’s marriage and would be free to talk only after 15 days.

SPORTY! Deepika Padukone

RACHEL FERNANDES Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; October 31, 2009)

Guess where Deepika Padukone is going be this weekend? In Abu Dhabi, that’s where. Not shooting for some Arabian adventure film in the capital city of the UAE, but, well, watching the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix live on Sunday.
This is the first Grand Prix at Abu Dhabi and marks the climax of the 2009 F1 World Championship. The venue is the Yas Marina Race Circuit off the coast of Abu Dhabi where a 500-bed, five-star hotel straddles the race track. And where F1 fans can walk upto the paddocks from the hotel itself. Deepika, an F1 fan apparently, will be Vijay Mallya’s luck mascot for his racing team. The King of Good Times had the dimpled Bollywood beauty specially flown down after he heard that she cherished the desire to catch an F1 race live. As his special guest, Deepika will watch the season finale race from Mallya’s VVIP box.
The liquor baron, incidentally, has always had Bollywood stars as his guests at Grand Prix events. Earlier, it was the Sen sisters Raima and Riya. Don’t know whether her presence tomorrow at Abu Dhabi will spur Mallya’s F1 drivers to step on the gas and aim for a podium finish, but with all the rumours doing the rounds on Deepika’s breakup with beau Ranbir Kapoor, this mini holiday may in fact be that much needed breather for the actress.

Twenty stars to do the catwalk for a good cause

NICOLE DASTUR Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; October 23, 2009)

When Naresh Goyal’s 20-year-old daughter Namrata Goyal, who is Shabana Azmi’s godchild, went to the village Mijwan in UP with the actress-cum-activist for the first time, she came back with an idea. Such was the life transforming experience for her.

To rewind a bit — Shabana Azmi’s NGO Mijwan Welfare Society (MWS), which was started by her father Kaifi Azmi, has been doing noteworthy work for the betterment of the villagers of Mijwan. When Namrata was amidst the villagers, she too was inspired to do something for their welfare. And that’s how
‘Mijwan — Sonnets in Fabric’, a fashion show with a difference was born, to raise funds to set up a District Learning Centre in the village. “I have always believed in the power of youth to act as catalysts for change. Fifty percent of India is under 25 years, they can change the world if they are motivated to get involved and tap into their own reserves of strength,” says Shabana.

SA The fashion contest-cum-show will
also serve as a platform for fashion designing students to showcase their talent. Students from five fashion and design institutes will take part in an inter-collegiate contest where shortlisted students will be mentored by designers Manish Malhotra and Anita Dongre, and their creations will be showcased by top stars and models including Karan Johar, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Abhay Deol, Malaika Arora-Khan, R Madhavan, Konkana SenSharma, Dia Mirza, Prachi Desai, Raima Sen, Boman Irani, Arshad Warsi, Sandhya Mridul, Mona Singh, Tupur and Tapur Chatterjee, Aditi Govitrikar, Diandra Soares, Alesia Raut and Dipannita Sharma. The show, to be held in December, will be compered by Mandira Bedi, styled by Manish and Anita and judged by eminent names. “These stars are youth icons and it will be a huge boost for these students to have their creations showcased by them,” says Shabana, adding that she is grateful to all the stars and designers for being a part of this venture absolutely free of cost. ad

Rita

RENUKA SHAHANE TURNS DIRECTOR!

Everyone who has seen ‘Hum Aapke Hai Koun..!(HAHK) must be aware of this actor. In the film, she played Pooja, Prem’s (Salman Khan) elder sister who meets with a tragic death. Renuka Shahane had become very popular after this film. She also acted in some of the sitcoms earlier. Although she became a known face after HAHK, she wasn’t seen in many films. But now she’s back as a director. Her first film, a Marathi one, titled Rita, is all set to release tomorrow. Renuka Shahane is also there in the film along with Pallavi Joshi, Suhasini Mulay, Mohan Agashe and others. Jackie Shroff also has an important role in the film. Rita in fact is Jackie’s first Marathi film. Surprisingly, just last week, he was seen as a Punjabi farmer in Kisaan.

Rita is adapted from a Marathi novel Rita Welingkar written by the eminent critic Shanta Gokhale, who is also Renuka’s mother. One look at the promo of the film proves that Renuka has sensitively handled the film and will surely impress the audiences. Co-incindentally, women debut directors have fared exceptionally well this year. Zoya Akhtar’s Luck By Chance was a top-notch product while Firaaq by Nandita Das was one of the most impactful films of this year.

The reason why I wrote about this film is because Renuka Shahane stays just a minute away from my house! She used to stay there with her mother until she got married. She occasionally visits her mother but still, I haven’t seen her even once. But I had a chance to meet his husband, actor Ashutosh Rana. I remember the date quite well-it was Jan 5, 2003. My friend stays in the building opposite Renuka Shahane’s and both these buildings share a common compound. I and my friends were playing there when a car stopped outside the compound and Ashutosh Rana came out. He was dressed as a neta-it was the get-up for his film, maybe. He went straight to Renuka’s house. At that time, I didn’t even know that Renuka Shahane’s home is located there and that Rana is her husband! After my knowledge was updated about this, I and my pals decided to take his autograph. I quickly went to my house and got a diary. We all were too scared to press the bell of the house. Finally, I went ahead and did the needful. Renuka’s mother (Ashu’s mother-in-law Shanta Gokhale, who wrote the novel from where Rita is adapted) opened the door. I told her about our wish to take Ashutosh’s autograph. She smiled, pinched my cheeks and went inside to call the actor! He came out and was too glad to fulfill our wish!

From that day onwards, whenever I hear about Renuka Shahane or even Ashutosh Rana, this incident instantly comes to my mind!

SHOB CHARITRO KALPONIK RELEASED

SCK

Just imagine-a Bipasha Basu film released last Friday and hardly anyone knows about it. The film in question is Shob Charitro Kalponik (SCK), a Bengali film by the well-known director Rituparno Ghosh. The film had created some hype ever since news spread that Bipasha will be seen in a Bengali film. Last I had heard was Bips’ voice is dubbed and that Big Pictures have backed the film.

The film got a good release in Kolkata. In Mumbai it was released only in 2 multiplexes, 1 show in each and both these multiplexes are in South Mumbai. It is shocking that a Bipasha Basu film got such hype-less release. English subtitles were also there and so even non-Bengali viewers would have surely come to see the film, provided the film was promoted well and adequate shows were organized in more multiplexes throughout the city.

4 years back, even Antar Mahal (AM), starring Abhishek Bachchan, Soha Ali Khan, Jackie Shroff and Raima Sen had released without any hype. But compared to SCKAM had more number of shows. Critics had reviewed AM but in the case of SCK, I didnt see it’s single review in any newspaper. Maybe even the critics werent aware of its release! Very unfortunate!

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, July 21, 2009 – 18:30 IST Raima Sen
In Bollywood, while one keeps on hearing about catfights between two heroines, but this one is an unheard of ever before. This is possibly the only sister jodi in Bollywood, Riya Sen and Raima Sen, both of whom will be seen sharing screen space together for the first time in Rituparno Ghosh’s Noukadubi.

Apparently, Rituparno had approached Riya and Raima for the film at the same time and both of them even received the script together. They were offered two very diverse roles and both of them had no qualms playing the characters. If our sources are to be believed, then, Riya initially thought Raima’s character had a lot more prominence and had much more scope and dimension to it as compared to hers. But being a thorough professional and a doting sister, Riya chose to go ahead with the role she was offered, as it was extremely challenging. What’s interesting about the entire episode is that both the actresses are playing roles very contrary to their public image. Our well placed sources revealed that while Riya Sen will be seen in a complete de-glam avatar, Raima will be playing a sophisticated woman.

Riya Sen
Speaking about her experience of working with Riya, Raima said, “It was nice to watch her do such a complex character. She was so easy and comfortable on the sets and with the director. Everyone pampered her silly! This is the first time I’ve played such a mature character in Rituda‘s film. I play the character of a learned and sophisticated woman who holds her own in any situation. It’s quite a contrast from Riya’s character who plays a naïve village belle.”

Riya stated, “Raima pampered me silly on the sets. Right from organizing the best make up vans and acquainting me with the staff in Kolkata, she was always a phone call away and kept everything prepared for me! Sometimes I felt I was treated like a baby, it felt like my first film.”

Mumbai:Ayesha Takia’s sibling Natasha is Bollywood bound. Like her elder sister, she too wants to be part of the film industry. The youngster has already begun the process of grooming herself to be an actress.

Says a source, “Though Natasha harboured aspirations of acting as well, she did not pursue it seriously. But after Ayesha’s marriage, she became more focussed and made up her mind.”

Her mother Faridah confirms, “Yes, Natasha is keen to be an actress as well. I have no reservations about it. Like Ayesha, I want her too to make a unique mark for herself. At the moment, she hasn’t signed any project but in the next six months, she will be ready. We are having her portfolio shot. She has already started attending dance classes.”

With Ayesha keen to help hubby Farhan Azmi in his hotel business as well as launch her line of clothing, Natasha now feels that she can step into her elder sister’s shoes.

Adds the source, “Natasha has lost a lot of weight and is keen to make it in B-Town. Her mom and sis have been telling her the hows and whys of the industry.”

Like Ayesha, Natasha too studied at St Anthony’s School. Interestingly, she has 18 piercings all over her body. But her mother says, “They have all gone now. That was done when she was 15 years old. As she wants to be an actress, she has removed them all. That was all part of her younger days.”
