Anurag Kashyap finds an unusual hero to play a serial killer for the second film of the Mumbai trilogy – Nawazuddin aka Patna Presley of Emosonal Attyachaar

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 05, 2010)

Anurag Kashyap’s much talked-about Mumbai trilogy has found its third and final hero. While Aamir Khan stars in the first film, John Abraham will play the lead in the third. Now, the little-known but talented Nawazuddin who gave sterling cameo performances in 2009 in Nandita Das’s Firaaq, Kabir Khan’s New York, Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D (one of the two Patna Presleys singing Emosonal Attyachaar) and Black Friday, has been pencilled in as the lead in Kashyap’s second film in the Mumbai trilogy. It’s a huge leap for an actor from a village near Delhi.

More startling than his casting is the character that Nawazuddin plays. He plays Raman Raghav, India’s most brutal serial killer. In 1968, Raghav bludgeoned a number of pavement dwellers to death before he was caught and diagnosed with schizophrenia. (Sriram Raghavan has, in fact, made a documentary on the serial killer.)

Nawazuddin has been secretly reading up on Raman Raghav and looking at footage of the killer. When we spoke to him, Nawazuddin was taken aback. He said, “Anurag has asked me to keep it absolutely quiet. Yes, I’m playing the serial killer Raman Raghav in Anurag Kashyap’s film. It’s the biggest challenge of my career especially since superstars like Aamir and John feature in the other two films of the series.”

Nawazuddin, who has been trying to make a mark as an actor in Bollywood since 1996, has played the lead in Aamir Khan’s Peepli Live and Mangesh’s Dekh Circus too. Says the actor emotionally, “I’ve waited very long for this. I’ve struggled hard to get out of playing the cameo to the lead. Mumbai trilogy is my greatest challenge.”

After dissociating herself from Kaizad Gustad, Ayesha Shroff now warns another producer to think twice before entertaining his script

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 05, 2009)

Acrimonious break-ups never amount to anything good, especially if the woman feels wronged. Ayesha Shroff and Kaizad Gustad may have parted ways, but it doesn’t mean that she’s ready to forgive or forget yet. She has warned producer Ambika Hinduja about the pitfalls of taking on Kaizad as a director.

Apparently, Kaizad met Ambika and asked her if she could produce a film for him. He claimed that Sanjay Dutt is very interested in the script. Confirming that, Ambika said, “Kaizad said that Sanjay Dutt has shown interest in it. But I haven’t given it much thought yet. I am currently very busy with Teen Patti.” Dharam Oberoi, Sanjay Dutt Productions’ CEO said, “We don’t have dates for Kaizad now, but we might do the film with him later.”

Kaizad is unaware that recently Ayesha called up a close associate of Ambika to warn her that she may end up burning her fingers if she decides to produce a film for Kaizad.

Why did Ayesha tip off Ambika? A source says, “Ayesha and Ambika are friends. Ayesha didn’t want Ambika to experience the trouble she had with Kaizad during the making of her second film with him, Bombil and Beatrice, which went over-budget due to his ineptitude. She cautioned Ambika through her office. Ambika has got the message.”

Ayesha did not deny the story. She said, “Ambika and I are friends. I always want the best for her. I want her to make bigger and better films.”

We called and texted Kaizad, but he did not revert.

Anushka Sharma is presently shooting for Parmeet Sethi’s yet untitled directorial debut opposite Shahid Kapoor. This is her second film with Yash Raj Films after Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. She has signed an exclusive three-film contract with YRF, which prohibits her from signing any films with other banners.

Sources reveal that Anushka is getting restless and wants the contract to end soon so she can take on more work.

Wrap up, ASAP!

Shahid and Anushka are presently shooting in Hyderabad. Parmeet is making sure there are no delays whatsoever with the shoot. In a closed door meeting with the director, the actress expressed her desire to wrap up the schedule for this movie as soon as possible.”

After the Hyderabad schedule, the unit shifts to the US. Says an insider, “Parmeet plans to finish the film without any break. It also works for Anushka, who plans to get straight into her third and final film with the banner, as soon as this one wraps.”

Anushka was approached by a few directors but she couldn’t sign any films as she was bound by the contract.
When contacted, her spokesperson said, “Anushka is happy with her Yashraj contract. She is free to do films outside the banner. She dislikes talking about projects that are in the pipeline and will talk about them when they hit the floor.”
