ROCKET SINGH GOES THE ‘THE HANGOVER’ WAY!

I always believe that promotion is of utmost importance for a film to succeed. It helps to create hype and arouse curiosity which in turn helps the film get a good opening. But some producers don’t stress too much on promotion, presumably for two reasons:

-> The producer doesn’t have enough money to publicize his product. Or maybe, the budget of the film went so high that the producer couldn’t afford to spend additional 2-3 crores on promotion

-> The producer is supremely confident of his product. He is confident that he has come up with a winner and come what may, it will attract audiences and do a great job commercially.

The second reason seems applicable as to why Rocket Singh-Salesman Of The Year, releasing tomorrow, isn’t promoted much.  Obviously, YRF aren’t short on funds so first reason can be ruled out. And going by Ranbir Kapoor’s confident declaration that Rocket Singh is his best film till date, it seems that the film will turn out to be a great entertainer. In his words, “I can proudly say that Rocket Singh… is not just my greatest film till date but also one of the greatest films made in the recent times. Believe me, it belongs to a different world altogether”.

Maybe, Ranbir did this as a personal publicity campaign on his part; after all, actors always do this, isn’t it? But it’s a fact that whenever the Chopras adopt a negligible promotional strategy for their film, then that film works wonders. ‘Chak De! India’ was also badly promoted and many trade pundits had predicted that it’ll fail. It even took an average opening. But the response was extremely positive and from the 2nd day, the film began attracting audiences in large numbers. It later turned out to be one of the biggest blockbusters of that year, 2007. Similarly, last year, Chopras went slow in promoting Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi which was very successful at the BO.

Another classic example is the case of The Hangover. How many of were aware of this film or had planned to see it when it released? The film had no famous stars and it also wasn’t promoted well across the world. In India, it released with a Hindi biggie, New York and Hollywood biggie, Terminator Salvation. The first day collections were pathetic. But the critics’ positive response and equally satisfying response of junta compelled moviegoers to catch this flick. In big cities, it ran for as many as 6-7 weeks (a rarity for Hollywood films) and was running with 70%+ occupancy even in weekdays!

So the point is-promotion is most vital but when your product is top-class and you are confident about its success, it’s okay to not promote the product much. Even ‘A Wednesday!’ and Mumbai Meri Jaan weren’t marketed well but later turned out to be two of the most loved films of 2008.

Coming back to Rocket Singh, the other reason why its promotion is low is because of Ranbir Kapoor’s presence in the film. He has received immense appreciation from his last 2 films, Wake Up Sid and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and is already on his way to become superstar. So maybe, YRF is of the opinion that Ranbir’s presence is now enough to get people to theatres. Also the title of the film, title song and the fact that it’s directed by Shimit Amin (director of Chak De and Ab Tak Chappan) has created some curiosity. If the film really turns out to be exciting as Ranbir has said, then he would be immediately crowned as the superstar for sure! Let’s hope for the best!

CELINA’S AWARD WINNING FLICK NOT RELEASING IN INDIA

Many moviegoers and even those in industry were shocked to hear that Celina Jaitly got the Best Female Actor award for her New Zealand flick Love Has No Language at the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF)! A popular Bollywood screenwriter’s status on Facebook read, “Celina has won the Best Actor Award at CIFF. I’m trying to find out whether Stevie Wonder, Ravindra Jain and Nasser Khan (of Shadow fame) were the judges”! Such reactions were expected as Celina was never considered as an ‘actor’ anytime by majority. So this news came as 440 volt ka jakta!

Talking about the film, it has released in several countries but it still hasn’t got a release here in India and now Celina has confessed that the film won’t see a theatrical release here-it would come directly on DVDs. It pains to see inferior treatment being meted out to India so many times. The lead actress in the film is from India, she has even bagged a prestigious award and yet the film won’t release here-doesn’t sound fair, does it? Even Slumdog Millionaire got a very late release in India and it didn’t do a great job as people had already seen the film by downloading from the internet. Somewhere, this should stop!

Bollywood has given up HAHK and DDLJ for short and simple English titles

Bollywood has rediscovered the KISS (Keep It Short and Simple) rule, at least where film titles are concerned. Having had its fill of long names — Bollywood’s now high on short words, and most of them straight off the English vocabulary rack. Sample this: almost 20 films this year had English titles and there are almost 30 more to come… from Blue to Wanted and Radio to Kites. Trade pundits attribute this to several reasons. “Almost every title has been exhausted. Others have been blocked by producers before hand. Filmmakers have to come up with unique titles and English words give an instant youth connect,” explains trade analyst Komal Nahta, adding, “Even Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge was shortened to the English DDLJ.”

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh agrees, claiming that it’s a healthy trend looking at global cinema, “Bollywood films have an international audience. Ever since English lyrics in Hindi songs became a hit, filmmakers began exploring these options. As long as the title suits the content of the film, it’s bound to work.” Vashu Bhagnani, whose next film is titled Do Knot Disturb, adds, “When the masses can accept English songs and words in our films, why not
titles? The audience targeted is largely the youth and they can easily identify with such names.” Rohit Shetty, director of All the Best and Golmaal Returns, defended his titles, “Words like Welcome, All The Best, Luck, and No Problem work well even with the non-English speaking masses in the interiors. These titles have tested positive with the multiplex audience so it’s a win-win scenario all across.”

Trade analysts also believe TV has made English and ‘Hinglish’ popular. “Thanks to the serials, talk shows and advertisements, ‘Hinglish’ has become well-accepted. So if the words are simple and part of daily usage, the names are more likely to work than not,” say trade analysts.

However, filmmaker Vipul Shah, whose films — Singh is Kinng, London Dreams and Action Replayy — all have English names, has a different take. “London Dreams is the name of a band associated with my film, whereas Action Replayy was the name of my play done several years ago. So, the name has to show some connection with the film theme and should not be a random word,” he says. Will the trend of long names that kickstarted with Hum Aapke Hain Kaun pave way for English shorties? Time will tell.

A blind man as a hero…that’s something really novel and interesting! And this blind hero dances, does daring stunts and doesn’t look visually impaired at all. Unfortunately, in order to exhibit blind actor Nasser Khan’s greatness, the director and the screenwriters paid no attention to other factors and came up with a pathetic product, which due to some reason is titled Shadow. The loopholes in the narrative are big enough to drive a tanker through! Seriously, what were the writers thinking while scripting this film? Even kindergarten kids could have come up with a better film!

The story of the movie: Arjun Sherawat (Nasser Khan) is a serial sharp shooter who since few months is giving the Mumbai Police sleepless nights. He kills his victims and doesn’t leave any clues at all. Inspector Sanjana (Sonali Kulkarni) who is entrusted this case tries hard but fails to get any information or whereabouts regarding Arjun Sherawat. In real, Sherawat is a jovial car mechanic called Raju who has the ability to impress any girl by mouthing some crap dialogues in the most pathetic manner! Coming back to Sanjana, she gets clues that point that reporters Sheetal (Hrishitaa Bhatt) and Rahul (Milind Soman) (the latter who’s hell bent on criticizing Sanjana and Mumbai Police) may be Arjun Sherawat’s allies. But Sanjana is proved wrong when Sheetal informs her about Sherawat’s next victim. Sheetal couldn’t save Sherawat’s target but she’s able to kill him. Intermission time! Now we all know that picture abhi baaki hai and that Arjun Sherawat must be alive and that he’s not going to die just halfway. And as expected, he is indeed alive! He sends an audio clip, challenging Police that he’ll kidnap Builder Habib Faizal (Mushtaq Khan) on September 1-rok sake to rok le! If you want to know what happens next, you’ll have to commit an act of bravery, i.e. see this film!

The film could have been an engrossing fare, never mind the glitches, but even that doesn’t happen as songs are placed just anywhere in the film which badly hampers the pace of the film. There’s a scene where Sherawat aka Raju the mechanic fixes a screw in the car of a hottie (Sonia Mehra) who in turns gets floored and offers him 1000 bucks. Raju and his two colleagues feel that this is a reason to celeberate and so they visit a pub and break into the song ‘Yaariyan’! All this had no connection with the main plot and yet, director Rohit Nayyar happily wastes time on such stupid scenes!

The police are shown as utter fools while Arjun Sherawat is projected as an intelligent ‘sexy’ criminal who can escape from the cops right under their noses. And even characters were not well sketched. Even after the film ends, one doesn’t understand Hrisihita Bhatt’s connection with Nasser Khan. Milind Soman in the initial portions is shown as a reporter but later, we learn that he’s actually a senior cop of Delhi Crime Branch who was working on Sherawat’s case. Again, no explanation provided as to what Milind gained by pretending to be a reporter. Maybe, the director felt revealing Milind Soman’s true identity would give viewers the biggest shock of their lives!

Then there’s Sonali Kulkarni’s father (Vishwajeet Pradhan) who is the police commissioner and whom Sonali hates. This track served no purpose other than increasing the film’s duration. Post-interval, Sonali Kulkarni does a stupid item number (it was the most terrible sight I have seen in recent times) and then falls in love with Nasser Khan. Again, there was no need of this romantic angle in the plot. And how can I forget Home Minister Shiv Shankar (Sachin Khedekar) who used to pass his spare time raping young girls and killing them every week! Undoubtedly, Shadow was Nonsense No.1!

The climax of the film seemed little rushed-maybe the director felt that he has wasted enough time showing Nasser dancing and romancing and should finish the film ASAP. Surprisingly, the film has some good points-background score, music and Sameer Aftab’s performance. He was the only one who looked like a good actor in the film!

Nasser Khan, as we all know, is a bad actor with negligible dancing skills and pathetic dialogue delivery. But I’ll like to appreciate him for his efforts. It was next to impossible for a blind person doing such stunts, acting and even dubbing (the latter requires one to see). And he has also co-produced the film. If only he had improved the story and direction, then maybe Shadow would have been appreciated, notwithstanding his performance.

The film has lots of fine actors and it’s shocking to see them in such a film. Sonali Kulkarni impressed in the role of the cop initially but disappointed later with the item number and the pre-climax scenes. Milind Soman’s role was laughable and so his performance also got affected. Sachin Khedekar as the villainous serial rapist cum Home Minister gives a good performance. I hope he never ever signs such films! Samir Aftab, who played Khedekar’s PA, looked charming and he was the only one in the film who didn’t underperform or overact at all. Hrishitaa Bhatt, Vishwajeet Pradhan and Mushtaq Khan were fairly okay. Sonia Mehra was terrible.

Anand Raj Anand’s music was alright. ‘Khumariyan’ was the only good song of the lot. Raju Singh’s background score was the only thing that rocked in the film. Cinematographers Jalees Oberoi and Raju Badiger could have done a better job in the action scenes.

Rohit Nayyar failed as the director. He managed to showcase Nasser Khan but failed to come up with a well-made film. Mostly, action flicks manage to work in rural areas. But Shadow did a shoddy job even in rural places! In fact, after watching Shadow, I realize that Kamaal Rashid Khan’s Deshdrohi was so much better!

On the whole, Shadow was undoubtedly the worst film I have seen in my life. Stay miles away from this film. It’s worth recommending to your foes!

SIX HINDI FILMS THIS FRIDAY!

There would be no biggies for the next four weeks. The Ramzan month has commenced, during which a sizeable chunk of audience stay away from the theatres. Taking advantage of this, every year, a number of small and medium budget films hit the theatres in this holy month. The producers of such films hope that their film would do a good business in the absence of any biggie. Last year, ‘A Wednesday!’, 1920 and Welcome To Sajjanpur released during Ramzan and became hits.

And this year too, lots of small-budget films are all set to hit the screens. These films failed to get a proper release before the Ramzan as all weeks were booked by the biggies, owing to the producer’s strike which happened in summer. And this has resulted in a chaotic situation as around 20 films are planning to release in this month! 2 of them released last Friday-Shadow and Sikandar. In fact, tomorrow, as many as 6 films are all set to hit the theatres. These films are Daddy Cool, Kisaan, Quick Gun Murugun, Toss, Yeh Mera India and Love Khichdi!

Any layman can understand that it is indeed foolish for 6 films to release on a single day. And we should not forget the 2 Hollywood films that are also releasing tomorrow- Race To Witch Mountain and The Taking of Pelham 123. So this takes the number of films arriving tomorrow to 8! Madness!

But if observed, then producers don’t have much of a choice. If they won’t release their films now, then they won’t be able to do so till the end of 2009. Once the month of Ramzan ends, biggies will start releasing week after week. And releasing a small budget film with a biggie can be suicidal. So, they prefer releasing it with half-a-dozen other small films. Still, I fail to understand why only two films released last week and 6 films are releasing this Friday. What I mean is-2 of the films releasing tomorrow could have instead released last week. This would have made the situation less chaotic.

QGMOut of these 6, Quick Gun Murugan surely has an edge over the others. It is a spoof of western cowboy and Rajanikant films and its promos have been impressive. The film is releasing in 4 languages-English, Hindi and Tamil and Telegu. Kisaan (*Sohail Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Jackie Shroff, Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi and Rahul Dev) has the ability to do a great job in the North. Daddy Cool doesn’t have much chance. It is an official remake of the popular Hollywood film Death At a Funeral and is backed by Big Pictures. There are hardly any promos on TV which show as to what the film is actually about. Toss is the popular Ranvijay’s debut film, Yeh Mera India looks hard hitting while Love Khichdi’s promos started just a week ago! But these three films have dim chances of succeeding in this rat race due to no hype.

There’s a possibility that the next two weeks will also see 4/5/6 films releasing. God save all these films!

DHAN TE NAN IS NOT ORIGINAL!

dhan te nanThe song which has taken the entire nation by storm, Kaminey’s Dhan Te Nan is not an original song! Yes, you read it right! It was used around a decade back in Gubbare, a popular serial at that time on Zee TV comprising of short comedy stories. But before you blame composer Vishal Bharadwaj of being Pritam-2, here’s the entire truth-Vishal Bharadwaj himself had composted the Gubbare’s Dhan Te Nan! In fact, he was also the director of the episode in which the song is played. And even the lyricist for both the songs is the same (Gulzar)!

Although Bharadwaj did some changes in Kaminey’s Dhan Te Nan, there are many similarities in both of these versions. Even the line ‘Teli ka tel’ was incorporated in the original song. I wonder, why no one’s sentiments were hurt at that time?! Anyways, I’ve uploaded the original below. Do watch it and have a laugh! DO NOT MISS IT!

First things first! Before we dissect the film, discuss its merits and demerits, discuss whether it worked or not and offer reasons, let’s salute the grit, determination, willpower and courage of Nasser Khan, who enacts the role of the protagonist in SHADOW.

Imagine a blind person carrying off those hazardous, death-defying stunts… Just that effort deserves an applause.

Now let’s come to the point. SHADOW is more of a showreel to project the acting abilities of Nasser Khan, so, expectedly, the writing takes a backseat. The screenplay is very ’70s and ’80s, reminiscent of the masala films we enjoyed so much then. It’s just that times have changed and so have the tastes of a big chunk of moviegoers.

Yet, there’s no denying that there still exists a sizable chunk of movie-going audience that relishes masala films and SHADOW is targeted at them.

The police have not been able to crack a serial murder case. Arjun Sherawat [Nasser Khan] is a man who is unseen and is the criminal. No one knows his identity. This case has been granted to Sanjana [Sonali Kulkarni], a police officer. She has been trying too hard, but all her efforts have been in vain.

Sheetal [Hrishitaa Bhatt] is a press reporter who loves her profession to the core. She works with a news channel and has information about the case as she follows it very closely. Rahul [Milind Soman], a press reporter from another news channel, has also been following the case step by step. He constantly keeps nagging Sanjana about the case by questioning her from time to time.

Murders are still being committed at short intervals. Meanwhile, Sheetal passes a crucial information to police about the next target of Arjun Sherawat. But Arjun Sherawat meets with an accident and is presumed dead. Everyone is in a joyous mood until they hear Arjun Sherawat’s latest audio clip, which states that he will kidnap a famous builder Habeeb Faizal [Mushtaq Khan] in front of the police on a given date.

Everyone is stunned on hearing this. Meanwhile, Arjun Sherawat succeeds in kidnapping Habeeb Faizal. What happens next?

In an effort to showcase the heroic abilities of Nasser Khan, the writers throw logic out of the window while writing the scenes. The film holds your attention in the initial reels, but goes haywire in the second half. The romantic track between Nasser and Sonali is the weakest link in the narrative. So is the climax, which just doesn’t work.

At the same time, the stunts and also a few individualistic sequences are deftly executed. Plus, the musical score [Anand Raaj Anand] is the type that caters to the masses and fits well for this genre. Rohit Nayyar’s shot compositions are perfect. Plus, technically speaking, it’s a polished job. However, the writing lets him down at places. Cinematography is good. The stunts deserve special mention.

Nasser Khan is not an actor and though this is evident in several sequences, you don’t really complain because you haven’t come to watch the histrionics in any case. It’s the curiosity factor that has drawn you towards this film, right? Milind Soman gives a good account of himself. Sonali Kulkarni looks grossly over-weight, but does well nonetheless. However, what was the need to make her do an item song? Hrishitaa Bhatt and Samir Aftab get minimal scope. Sachin Khedekar enacts the mandatory villain’s part with ease. Vishwajeet Pradhan and Mushtaq Khan are commendable.

On the whole, SHADOW caters more to the hardcore masses mainly. A film for single screens!

BEING A KHAN IS NOT A CRIME!

Deepa Ravi (leap 24) was right when she replied to my comment on her New York review that “It (9/11) hurt America below the belt and hit them hard. They are still recovering from it!” The Americans took a stew of measures to see to it that something like WTC Attack doesn’t repeat again on their soil. However, many of their steps have at times hurt the religious sentiments of the people. The SRK incident last Saturday confirms this.

My Name is KhanMany are criticizing Shah Rukh Khan for ‘over-reacting’. Some say that he did this for promoting his film My Name Is Khan (MNIK). Why would SRK do something like that? He has been in the industry since around two decades. We haven’t seen him before doing such cheap marketing gimmicks for his films, have we? And MNIK is some 7-8 months away-why would he arouse a cheap controversy to market his film which has such a long time to release? And 12 days back, he had already made enough publicity for MNIK when he held a press conference, announcing the tie-up with Fox Studios.

What infuriated about this incident that the officials doubted SRK and his star-status and that they took 2 hours (which is really a long time) to question him. Kabir Khan (Director, New York) is right when he said about this incident, “How much time does it take to find out who Shah Rukh Khan is? A Google search would give more hits than Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise put together”. This clearly shows that it is possible that Shah Rukh Khan was subjected to secondary inspection because of his Muslim identity.

Not only SRK, many others Khans of Bollywood are of the same opinion that they have been subjected to secondary inspection because of their last name. Zayed Khan also agrees and says that when he’s on a tour, he is the only one from his team who gets detained while others are cleared in no time at all. And if the officials are questioned, they say it’s a random checking. At this, Zayed rightly says, “Tell me, how can there be random checks on 5 US airports one after another and in all of them only yours truly gets detained for additional checking?” A valid point, indeed!

New York director Kabir Khan’s ordeal is much bigger. He has spoken about this but unfortunately, it never made it to the headlines. Before New York, Kabir Khan had shot 6 times in US. At that point of time, FBI came up with 29 South Asian names and they ordered that anyone having those names should not be allowed to enter US at all. Unfortunately, one of the 29 names was Kabir Khan! He must have had a tough time explaining the officials.

So the point is-people have faced discrimination because of their religion which is completely unjustified. And how come SRK is wrong if he made his unsatisfying experience public? Amidst all this, Amar Singh enters taking full advantage to blast SRK. He says that even Big B was subjected to security checks and further says “There are two types of people in society—one, who make an issue out of an incident and another, who cooperates with procedures”. Very funny, esp when Amar Singh says something like this since he’s famous for making issues. He made an issue during the 2007 Filmfare Awards and this year, during the Sajid-Ashutosh feud in Star Screen Awards, he was the only one who took sides. Double Standards!

shadowREADY FOR SHADOW?

Two films are going to release in two weeks-one is intentionally a spoof and the other is a spoof, unintentionally! The former is Quick Gun Murugan and the latter is Shadow which releases tomorrow! I am sure everyone must have seen the promos of Shadow, which proudly proclaims as to how its lead actor Naseer Khan is actually a blind man and yet, does so many stunts in the film. Although kudos to Naseer Khan for achieving this considerable feat, his dialogue delivery and his dancing style has become the laughing stock! And the makers intentionally show the unintentionally funny scenes of the film in the promos! It is difficult to say how the film will turn out to be but one thing is for sure. Naseer Khan is getting the same response as Kamaal Rashid Khan (of Deshdrohi, remember?) had received!
