Surprise, surprise, surprise! Sometimes, the expectations from a movie are zilch, but what unfolds on screen is beyond expectations. It surprises you, to put it simply.
On face-value, BOLO RAAM looks like it’s straight out of 1970s cinema. A movie with predictability written all over it. A movie that carries zero hype and matches it with zero content. But BOLO RAAM isn’t archaic, isn’t the usual masala, isn’t zero content.
A remake of the Tamil film RAAM [2005; starring Jeeva, Saranya, Rehman, Murali], BOLO RAAM has an interesting plot with an engaging screenplay that compels you to look at the screen for most parts of the movie. But, of course, there’re hiccups. A few non-actors and a done to death climax could’ve been avoided.

Raam [Rishi Bhutani] is charged with the murder of his mother Archana [Padmini Kolhapure]. Raam falls into a state of shock, brief psychotic disorder, after his mother’s death and becomes silent, refusing to talk or react in any manner.
The investigating officer, Indrajeet Singh Rathi [Om Puri] is puzzled and unable to make Raam speak. He consults a psychiatrist, Dr. Negi [Naseeruddin Shah], to determine the cause of Raam’s state of mind and the reason for his silence.
Rathi interrogates various personalities for the case, questioning Raam. Every possible motive that Raam might have for murdering his mother is explored. Furthermore, Raam’s neighbours, Sub-Inspector Sajid Khan’s [Govind Namdev] daughter Juhi [Disha Pandey] and son Sameer [Krishan Khatra], are summoned by Rathi for interrogation. Will his silence solve the puzzle?
Without wasting any time, BOLO RAAM takes off from its opening titles itself. The story goes back and forth, several new characters are introduced, but the narrative stays faithful to the main plot. The best is reserved for the second half. Layer after layer is peeled with expertise. The viewer is keen to know the identity of the killer and that’s when the film fumbles and tumbles.
The culprit’s track is sloppy and a major put off. In fact, the circumstances that lead to the murder are quite amateurish and look far from convincing. Surely, the writer could’ve thought of a better culmination. Also, the one-sided love affair is functional.
Debutante director Rakesh Chaturvedi ‘Om’ makes a confident debut, although he should’ve cast some better actors for key roles. There’s not much scope for music [Sachin Gupta] in the film and hence, just one song merits mention – ‘Maa Tere Jaisa’. The background score [Sanjay Chowdhury] deserves special mention.
Newcomer Rishi Bhutani does a commendable job. He oozes confidence, despite sharing the same frame with accomplished actors. Om Puri gets into the skin of his character and is impressive, while Padmini Kolhapure is a pleasure to watch after a long gap. She is beautifully restrained. Naseeruddin Shah has a brief role and the veteran does it well. Govind Namdev is very good.
Rajpal Yadav is wasted. Both Disha Pandey and Krishan Khatra are non-actors. Manoj Pahwa does his usual act.
On the whole, BOLO RAAM has decent merits [hence those 2 stars], but the problem is its wrong release timing. It won’t stand a chance in front of a hurricane called 3 IDIOTS.
Kannada matinee idol Vishnuvardhan, passed away of cardiac arrest yesterday
At the age of 22, H N Sampath Kumar was rechristened Vishnuvardhan by legendary director Puttanna Kanagala and he had fame and popularity literally seeking him out overnight. The Mysore-born actor would often call his entry into films as dynamic and expressed a desire to have a graceful exit. It turned out to be an unexpected exit in the early hours of December 30; and not just from films.
At 59, none of his fans, friends or family expected him to perish. The late actor was suffering from diabetes and had developed cardiac problems during his last days. He is survived by his wife, Bharati and two adopted daughters.
Vishnuvardhan made his film debut with a small role in Vamshavriksha directed by Girish Karnad in 1972. In the same year, he appeared in Puttanna Kanagala’s magnum opus Naagarahaavu, where he played the protagonist Ramachari, which remains a much-liked character to date.
A polyglot who could speak six languages, his life changed when films beckoned him. As Vishnuvardhan would recall later in life, he had neither enthusiasm nor love for films. “I was not a hard worker, but a sincere worker,” he summed up his film career. When his first photograph appeared in Chitradeepa magazine after his film debut, what the young Vishnuvardhan aspired was to be recognised by girls as he walked around Gandhi Bazaar.
At the time Vishnuvardhan married actress Bharati, she was a bigger star than him. Their marriage lasted for a lifetime but the couple was childless. They adopted two girls. But the actor never spoke about this aspect of life.
In the last few years, Vishnuvardhan had become a disciple of Bannanje Govindacharya and taken up vows of silence from time to time. He would avoid public platforms that would necessitate him to make tough statements or take stands. However, he held on to his beliefs and would never waver from his somewhat radical views.
Akshay Kumar, who is holidaying with his wife and son in Goa, expressed his shock about the superstar’s death. Akshay says, “I worked with him in Ashaant (1993) and I think, that is the only Hindi film that Vishnuji did. We shot it in his home town Bangalore, and he was so popular! Men, women and children came to him to be touched by him. He was like God. Newly-born babies were named after him.”
Akshay remembers the good times that they had while shooting the film. “Vishnuji was disciplined, focused and hard working. I have learnt a lot from him. We did a Hindi and a Kannada version of Ashaant. The Kannada version was a super hit. The Hindi version was a flop. I guess he was a much bigger star than I could ever be. As I speak about him now all the memories of shooting during that film flash through my mind. I met him in Bangalore much later. He was warm and very friendly. Was he just 60? That’s no age to go.”

3 IDIOTS continues to surprise and shock! The Tuesday figures are in the range of Rs. 8.75 cr. to Rs. 9 cr., which is bigger than the Friday numbers of all biggies that opened this year, including LOVE AAJ KAL. The film has now crossed Rs. 60 cr. mark and is heading for a Rs. 75 cr. to Rs. 80 cr. Week 1. Unbelievable, but true!
Meanwhile, the Australia weekend numbers have also poured in. The film has collected an astonishing Aus. $ 3,98,595 [approx. Rs. 1.67 crores] on 20 screens, with the per screen average working out to Aus. $ 19,930. The numbers are bigger than the lifetime gross of most biggies.
Ekta Kapoor has managed a casting coup of sorts. She has signed Hollywood sensation Sendhil Ramamurthy (of TV series Heroes) for the lead role in her next directed by Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru (directors of 99). It’s a three-hero project.
Confirming the news, Ekta says, “It is true. He is one of the biggest Indian actors abroad. It was not easy to sign him and it took us about six months to rope him in. We had to go through a long process of meeting his agency in LA and then have the narration. However, the effort was worth it as he is on board. I think it is a big coup for all of us.”
Talking about the film, Ekta says, “Tusshar (Kapoor) is playing another lead role in the film. We have to finalise one more actor. This is Sendhil’s first mainstream Bollywood film. We are also trying to rope in some more international actors. Sendhil’s expected to be here in January, following which we start shooting for the film. It is a slice-of-life kind of a film, which has humour and shock elements. At this juncture, I cannot reveal anything more than this.”
Thanks to Gravity, Blind Dating and Little India are some of the Hollywood films that Sendhil has acted in. He has also done TV shows Ellen, Casualty, Guiding Light, Ultimate Force, Grey’s Anatomy and Numb3rs. However, it is his role in the TV series Heroes, which is most talked about. The character that Sendhil plays in Heroes, Mohinder Suresh, was originally written for a 55-year-old. However, his audition tape and screen test were convincing enough for the writers to rewrite the part for him.

Dara Singh is both amused and horrified to see Vindoo become a weepy person on Bigg Boss 3. Though his son is the frontrunner for the reality show’s prize in the finale tomorrow, his drastic behaviour is worrying the father.

“I am shocked to see this side of him,” says the Rustom-e-Hind. “He has become extra sensitive in the house. Vindoo is an emotional man no doubt but he has gone beyond limits. I don’t think he is missing his family and resorting to all this. He was keen to be part of the show. Guess the situation has made him kuch zyada hi.”
Singh Sr catches up on the antics of his son every night. People ask him: Pahalwan ka beta hoke bhi rota hai?
“When tears roll down his cheeks and Vindoo keeps wiping them away, I keep chuckling.”
About the housemates telling him to create his identity and not latch on to his father’s name, he says, “Vindoo has always been known as Vindoo Dara Singh. He prefers it this way. He has been telling the others, too, to write their names like that. Many people like to show others in bad light. Neecha dikhane me aur ilzaam lagane mein…some love to do this to others — to each his own.”
Dara Singh’s last B-Town outing was Jab We Met. “I lead a retired life and if there are some dada and nana roles that come my way and I like them, I am game.”
He’s looking forward to the show’s finale tomorrow night. “If an invitation comes along, I don’t mind going to Khandala for the show,” he says. And the first thing that he will tell Vindoo on meeting him is: “Tu itna kyu roya?”
Vindoo has a brother Amrik who is based in Chandigarh and runs a film studio.

It’s never a good idea to be in the same room with an ex and a current partner. Kim Sharma found herself in this unenviable situation when her ex, Yuvraj Singh, made an appearance at a party where she was getting rather cosy with her ‘good friend’ Abhishek Kapoor.
Sparks were bound to fly and this time, they threatened to scald poor Abhishek.
When the cricketer entered the party, he simply greeted Kim formally. But the Zen state didn’t last long as watching his ex with another man seems to have rekindled his possessive streak. He was annoyed and went up to Abhishek. A major argument ensued and Kim decided to leave the venue with Yuvraj.

Our source said, “Kim tried to salvage the situation. She asked both of them to calm down.” Things were normal for some time, but Kim and Yuvraj shocked everyone when they left the party together.
Kim and Abhishek refused to comment on the story.

Ekta Kapoor says the promo of her film Love Sex Dhoka is going to be the most controversial promos released this year. Incidentally, the 90-second promo of LSD will be released along with Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots in theatres across India on December 25.
Says Ekta, “We have already edited the 90-second promo thrice! When I first saw it, I was so shocked I fell off my chair. We had to edit almost 30 per cent of the controversial version in order for it to be shown with 3 Idiots. We will be releasing the unedited version on the internet simultaneously along with the trailer. The promo will be shown across only 290 multiplex screens across India. We didn’t want the promo to run at all theatres as it’s a digital medium.”
Ekta feels that it will be met with a largely polarised reaction. “It will shock the daylights out of people. They will either hate or love it but they can’t ignore it. The censor board was adamant that we couldn’t show these scenes without a U/A certificate.”
She adds, “The promo is not too sexually explicit but the dialogues and basic premise are raw and explicit. We had 40 beeps in the original promo which has now been cut down to two.”
Dibakar Banerjee says, “The censor board didn’t allow the promo to run without a U/A certificate. Some cuss words have been edited out. One of the scenes edited out is a slightly explicit scene where the male protagonist and another girl are rehearsing how to seduce a famous public figure on camera for a sting operation with some intricate moves. They found these objectionable and we had to remove them. Love Sex Dhoka is isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.”
