Twelve-year-old Darsheel Safary takes a break from acting to enjoy a normal school life and a girlfriend. But, he complains, his cheeks are still being pulled by everyone
Darsheel Safary, who shot to fame playing the dyslexic child in Taare Zameen Par (2007), is taking a break from acting.
According to his father Mitesh Safary, Darsheel who is now 12, has been kept away from the trappings of stardom so that he can concentrate on his studies. Mitesh says, “We wanted him to remain grounded after all the attention he received after Taare…. Now after doing two films, Bum Bum Bhole and Zokkomon, we want him to concentrate on school, studies and other normal activities. We don’t want him to be running from one studio to another.”
The youngest actor to win a Filmfare nomination for best actor says, “I hope people like me in Bum Bum Bhole and Zokkomon. I am not scared of my performance being compared with what I did in Taare …, because I am not the same any more. I would like to think I have grown as an actor. I am not signing anything more, unless it’s something really exciting, till my final exams. I want to do well in my studies. I have my whole life ahead of me to indulge in my main hobby, acting.”
Darsheel, who sounds far more relaxed now than he did during Taare… says he has changed since the film. He adds, “I got my teeth fixed. And I think it makes me look better. Everyone keeps saying I looked better with my teeth protruding, but I don’t agree with that.”
Darsheel’s girlfriend likes him with his new teeth. “Yes, I have a girlfriend, but I can’t disclose her name. It’s too personal and she won’t like it,” says the young star.
Recollecting the euphoria post-Taare…, Darsheel admits with a giggle that he had a tough time handling all the media and fan attention. He says, “I was either being asked questions I didn’t understand or my cheeks were being pulled. My cheeks still get pulled by everyone as soon as I step out. So I try to stay at home as much as possible. Other than that, my life is quite normal. I have some friends in school. They come home sometimes or I go to their home.”
