DANCING AWAY: Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif’s film is going to be the mother of rom-coms, say its makers

SHARIN WADER BUTANI Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; November 1, 2009)

This is going to be a ghazab ka phillum simply because the hottest sensations of Bollywood, Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor, are coming together on screen as a jodi for the first time. The promos of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani
already have people rating them as a hit. Tips Films, which is presenting this romantic comedy, believes that it has a winner, given its earlier track record — Race and Kismat Konnection. Like Ranbir and Katz, producer Ramesh Taurani too is excited about his offering because it’s directed by Rajkumar Santoshi who has given hits like Andaz Apna Apna, Barsaat, Damini and many others. “Ajab… is even more hilarious than Andaz Apna Apna,” said Taurani, “in fact, if Andaz had comedy, Ajab has comedy and romance in it.” Telling BT why they chose Ranbir and Katz, Santoshi said, “The film required a fresh pair. We were very impressed with Ranbir and Katrina. They have great screen presence and their fans will love them in this film.” The stars hit it off instantly on day one. They shot extensively on exotic locations in Turkey, Goa and Ooty, and like in the film, they had fun on the sets too. “Don’t go by her looks, she’s a bully,” said Ranbir as Katrina smiled and added, “People across all sections will be able to relate to this film.” The music, too, is catching on with audiences and topping charts, especially the song Tera Hone Laaga Hoon.
“The song wasn’t choreographed as such. The two were told to be natural and their screen presence added magic to the song,” said the filmmakers. Pritam, who scored the music, roped in some big singers like Atif Aslam, Kailash Kher, KK, Sunidhi Chauhan, Alisha Chinoy and Hard Kaur for this rom-com which is set to hit theatres on Novembe 6.

Govinda During the last couple of years, there have been countless stories around Govinda and his superstitions that have made the rounds. Whether it is shooting with a hen or getting the dialogues changed at the last minute, there have been quite a few interesting anecdotes that have made headlines. Now add one more to the list.

Believe it or not but this time around, what got the axe were the lyrics of ‘Poorza Poorza‘, an item number picturised on Amrita Rao for Govinda’s Life Partner. The lyricist who had to bear the brunt? Kumaar, who has in the past has written for quite a few films coming from the house of Bhatts and is trying to establish himself in the industry.

Informs a source attached to Life Partner, “Govinda was unhappy with some of the words in ‘Poorza Poorza‘ which he believed came with a negative connotation. The original lyrics go as ‘Mare Hum, Jab Seene Se Dil Gaya, Hai Poorza Poorza Hil Gaya; Jab Poorza Poorza Hil Gaya, To Dum Sa Nikal Gaya‘. He had problems with ‘Mare Hum’, ‘Seene Se Dil Gaya’ & ‘Dum Sa Nikal Gaya‘. He felt that this was clear indication of death and wanted to avoid them as a part of the song by all means.”

It was a Code Red situation for the entire team of Life Partner, including composer Pritam, and the song had to be changed pronto. Though the song in the CD still appears as per the original recording, the lyrics that find a place in the final print of the film that has just released over the weekend gone by read as:

To Humdum, Dil Se Dil Jab Mil Gaya, Hai Poorza Poorza Hil Gaya; Jab Poorza Poorza Hil Gaya, Tan Man Sa Machal Gaya.”

Naturally, words like ‘Humdum’, ‘Dil Se Dil Jab Mil Gaya‘ and ‘Tan Man Sa Machal Gaya‘ were far more ‘romance friendly’ and less ‘life threatening’ for Govinda.

On contacting, lyricist Kumaar was reluctant to talk about the matter. He said, “Yes, this indeed happened. Beyond that, I don’t wish to comment any further.”

Poorza Poorza‘ is sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Kunal Ganjawala and would be seen it’s revised version making it to the next lot of music CDs that would be hitting the stands.

King Khan pays tribute to the King of Pop. Bollywood unites for a music video to pay their respects to the late Michael Jackson

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 20, 2009)

Michael Jackson

Shah Rukh Khan

Michael Jackson has influenced Bollywood for decades now. From his signature moves to his singing, he has inspired everyone from musicians to technicians. Now, Bollywood unites to pay a heartfelt tribute to the King of Pop in a video, which will be aired on Michael Jackson’s birthday on August 29. The initiative has been taken by Shah Rukh Khan himself.

Vishal Dadlani confirmed the story and said, “The song is titled, We lived in his world.”

Kangna Ranaut

Hrithik Roshan

Katrina Kaif

Shahid Kapoor

Our source said, “Shah Rukh Khan is a huge fan of the late Michael Jackson and when the creative heads in Red Chilles pitched the idea, he loved it. He had cried when he learnt about MJ’s death. He was also supposed to attend one of the London concerts which never happened. So, the idea was finalised and they decided to make a music video as a tribute. The best talent for the song was Vishal of the Vishal-Shekhar duo. Vishal is a huge fan too and he was in shock for days when he learnt about MJ’s death.

Priyanka Chopra

Vishal Dadlani

Yuvraaj Singh

Prabhu Deva

He has written this passionate song and it has been composed by Vishal-Shekhar. They are also the performers in the video with singers Kay Kay, Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Goshal, among others. The video will have heartfelt messages by top stars like SRK, Hrithik Roshan, Prabhu Deva, Shahid Kapoor, Harman Baweja, Yuvraj Singh, Katrina Kaif, Kangna Ranaut and Priyanka Chopra, among others. The video, currently being shot, is directed by Samar Khan.”

The source further said, “None of the people associated with the video has charged a penny and it’s their love for the legendary singer that has brought them together. It’s been shot in low lighting and has a unique mood. The video will be aired on all the leading channels on August 29, MJ’s birthday. The song has been choreographed by Remo.”

Samar Khan remained unavailable for comment.

Tired of Mumbai’s crowds, Irrfan Khan is set to move into his new house at Madh Island
By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 05, 2009)

Irrfan Khan

Currently living in Goregaon, Irrfan Khan has decided that Mumbai’s melee is too much for him to handle. And so, a new house at Madh Island comes into the picture. Being built and designed since the last year, Irrfan and his family are ready to move into it within the next two weeks, after the last few pieces of the puzzle fall into place. Says Irrfan, “With the malls coming up in Goregaon, it’s almost become impossible to live there. Too much congestion and pollution is harmful for health. My wife and I want our sons to grow up in surroundings with clean air.”

With their new residence at Harmony on Madh Island, Irrfan’s new neighbours from Bollywood are actress Deepti Naval, singer Sunidhi Chauhan, music composer Sandesh Shandaliya and director Ketan Mehta.

But Irrfan and family will move in only when wife Sutapa Sikdar’s mother gives them a date. “We are going to ask my mother-in-law to zero in on an auspicious day in this month to move in. She has a knack for these things. So we will go by her judgment. Otherwise, if anything goes wrong, I’ll be blamed for not being careful,” says Irrfan.

Irrfan’s wife says she put her writing career on hold to put their new house together. “Wrong!” Irrfan refutes her claims. “She just got bored of writing for television and the house thing is just an excuse. Maybe our new neighbours will provide her with intellectual stimulation,” he laughs.

Akshay Kumar. Kareena Kapoor. Sylvester Stallone. Anu Malik. Sajid Nadiadwala. Bollywood meets Hollywood. And we are talking about expectations here? It’s as simple as that – Kambakkht Ishq is the biggest ever film to be released so far in 2009 and no wonder expectations are sky high. With such huge names involved, multi crore budgets, promos doing an instant trick and the full-on unabashed commercial masala appeal that this film directed by debutant Sabbir Khan carries, Kambakkht Ishq has a lot riding on it.

As is the case with majority of Akshay Kumar movies, Kambakkht Ishq too has a special song by a guest composer and this is evidenced in the form of ‘Om Mangalam‘ which is composed and performed by RDB with the ‘shlok’ portion being created by Anu Malik himself. A number which is already en route to be a chartbuster in less than a week of promotion, ‘Om Mangalam‘ is a title song in itself as it has words Kambakkht Ishq being repeated throughout it’s four and a half minutes duration.

Never before has a chant being presented in such an innovative avtar but RDB make it possible with ‘Om Mangalam‘ which is the next anthem song in the offering, courtesy it’s catchy rhythm, fast paced Western arrangements, good vocals and above all, excellent picturisation and choreography. Coming again in a ‘reprised version’, ‘Om Mangalam‘ continues to make an impression due to its foot-tapping appeal. Expect this version to be hot favourite with DJs in days to come!

From this point on it is Anu Malik and lyricist Anvita Dutt Guptan all the way. Neeraj Shridhar, who has been the voice of Akshay Kumar for many a chartbusters, modulates his vocals for ‘Lakh Lakh‘. A ‘Khud Ko Kya Samajhti Hai’ [Khiladi] situation revisited with Akshay Kumar being the common factor, this time on it is the ‘bhangra’ flavour that finds it’s way into the narrative. Coming soon after ‘Om Mangalam‘, this number is not really the best follow up number that one would have expected in Kambakkht IshqHowever, yet again, picturisation should do the trick and perhaps make ‘Lakh Lakh‘ (that also appears in a remix version) a visually appealing number since the film has been shot on a lavish scale.

However, there is immediate redemption in the form of ‘Bebo‘ (yes, that’s actually the title of the song). The number has a vintage Anu Malik feel to it, what with Alisha Chinai joining the fun. It is exciting to see Anu and Alisha coming together for ‘Bebo‘ which promises a seductive-n-naughty outing. What also makes ‘Bebo‘ special is the fact that from arrangements to the song styling to Alisha’s voice to an overall attitude, it brings back the memories of many a musical chartbusters that Anu Malik had delivered in the 90s. This one is bound to make a mark even visually and should become popular amongst the lounge crowds. Also, as an alternative, there is a ‘club mix’ version that should make for a good hearing during a round of drinks!

The moment name K.K. comes on the credits, more often than not one can be sure that there would be a good song in the offering. This time around, it’s the turn of (bona fide) title song ‘Kambakkht Ishq‘ to make its presence felt in the album. K.K. sings the track in high spirits while reminding of R.D. Burman who used to enjoy such outings. Sunidhi Chauhan joins K.K. for this extremely catchy number which may not be high on lyrical quotient but has in it to enable a young-n-energetic fun-filled outing. A party number, ‘Kambakkht Ishq‘ is later heard in a much mandated ‘remix version’.

Much needed ‘thehrav’ comes in the form of ‘Kyun‘ which again has vintage Anu Malik written all over it. A mushy romantic number that could well have been a Javed Akhtar written number, ‘Kyun‘ sees Anu Malik getting inspired by R.D. Burman (as evidenced in arrangements that remind of the 70s). Meanwhile Shaan and Shreya Ghoshal take it upon themselves to ensure that together, they come up with yet another duet that deserves to stand out amidst all the fun, ‘masti’ and ‘hungama’ that has been an integral part of the album so far. Shreya Ghoshal is later heard in a solo version of the same song while making sure that audiences get a lot more beyond the surface in case of Kambakkht Ishq.

Aaum and Sulaiman Merchant are the guest composers for the English track ‘Welcome To Hollywood‘ which could well be the theme track of Kambakkht Ishq considering the fact that the film has been shot in a major way in Hollywood. Karsh Kale and Anushka Manchanda come together for this ‘full-on-attitude’ track which makes an impact in spite of singers not really going ballistics behind the mike. Written by director Sabbir Khan himself, this is one theme track which deserves to be placed at multiple junctures in the film’s narrative.

Kambakkht Ishq delivers what it promised at the very onset. A ‘masala’ outing was very much in the offering and that is ensured by means of ‘Om Mangalam‘ and title song ‘Kambakkht Ishq‘. Meanwhile, there is also some nice little surprise in place in the form of ‘Kyun‘ and ‘Bebo‘ that make the album a satisfying affair.

Om Mangalam, Bebo, Kyun
