Ashutosh Gowariker and Madhur Bhandarkar are friends again
By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 11, 2009)

Ashutosh Gowariker rubbed Madhur Bhandarkar the wrong way when he took digs at Priyanka Chopra at an awards function not so long ago. She was starring in Fashion then and the director Madhur Bhandarkar hadn’t taken too kindly to the remarks. However, when the wives are close friends, the animosity is bound to not last long.

As predicted, the two are friends again after having made up. No one knows who extended the olive branch, but the two have reconciled.

The patch-up happened a few days ago. A source reveals, “The relationship between the two families was too strong to be broken. Madhur’s wife Renu and Ashutosh’s wife Sunita, in particular, were very friendly . They are back to being thick friends again. None of them will tell you who took the initiative to patch up. All’s well that ends well.”

When asked to confirm that all was well between the two families now, Sunita Gowariker maintained, “It always was,” and added, “There was never a fall out for a patch-up to happen.”

Both sides take the same stand. Renu Bhandarkar said, “Everything is fine between Madhur and Ashutosh. Sunita and I meet up frequently. There is no problem.”

The trouble had started brewing when Priyanka won the best actress award for Madhur’s Fashion. Ashutosh compared Priyanka with Aishwarya and expressed his shock for Aishwarya not winning the best actress award as she was also nominated for Jodhaa Akbar in the same category. Madhur had shot back in the press, saying, “Ashutosh’s viewpoint was in a very bad taste, because it was a public podium where you just cannot demean anyone, especially Priyanka Chopra who, besides the fact that she had acted in my film Fashion, is also a dear friend.”

After that, both of them wanted to release their films (What’s Your Rashee? and Jail) on the same day at the box-office. That IMPAA did not permit Madhur to release it on the same day is another story.

At any rate, it’s all in the past now.

The premiere of the Bachchans’ home production Paa was a glittering affair with the who’s who of Bollywood attending the event last night

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 04, 2009)

The preparations for the grand premiere of Paa last night had started much earlier with Amitabh Bachchan visiting the venue at Wadala Imax at 1 pm yesterday to check out all the arrangements. Though the main event was scheduled to begin at 8.30 pm, a casually dressed Amitabh arrived at the venue much earlier at 6 pm and the first thing he did was to double check the arrangements.

He changed into natty formals shortly before the guests started arriving.

The Bachchans had divided their responsibilities to ensure that their guests are well-looked after. While Amitabh, Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai were standing at the entrance, Jaya Bachchan was looking after all the guests near the screens on the first floor.

Anil Ambani, his wife Tina and their son were among the first guests to arrive. Some of the power couples who attended the premiere were Shah Rukh Khan and wife Gauri, Ajay Devgan and wife Kajol, Hrithik and wife Sussanne, and Akshay Kumar and wife Twinkle. SRK sent Gauri and the kids upstairs while he stayed back to chat with the Bachchans for a while.  SRK was seen hugging Akshay Kumar. Arshad Warsi and wife Maria were there too.

Ritesh Deshmukh, Dino Morea and Rakeysh Mehra and his wife followed shortly and the director seemed happy to catch up with his Rang De Basanti team Atul Kulkarni and Kunal Kapoor. Sharman Joshi made a late entry.

Ranbir Kapoor and Ritesh were engrossed in a conversation outside screen 3. Aishwarya came upstairs and was seen talking to Ashutosh Gowariker, his wife Sunita and Srishti Behl. Aamir Khan came with his 3 Idiots director Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Aamir left half-an-hour after the screening began.

Abhishek was seen chatting with Govinda, who came in quite late.

Filmmakers David Dhawan, Satish Kaushik and Madhur Bhandarkar were there. Filmmakers Abbas Mustan came all the way from Lonavla.

The screening was held in all the four screens at Imax but it was screen 3, which had the maximum number of stars. The screening of the film started around 10 pm.

Kangna Ranaut hung around outside for a while, posing for pictures even though the film had started. She soon went inside the theatre.

Actress Priyanka Chopra and filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker match their raashees as their film readies for release

SHARIN WADER BUTANI Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; September 25, 2009)

Priyanka Chopra has everything going in her favour — success at the BO, awards, and now there’s also the possibility of making it to the Guinness World Records. And for that, she has filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker to thank. It’s in his, UTV Motion Pictures and AGPPL’s film, What’s Your Raashee? with Harman Baweja, that she’s played 12
different characters, something that no female actor has ever done before. “It’s great. I hope it happens. The paper work’s going on,” said Priyanka, who’s played a character from each of the 12 zodiac signs. But Ashutosh has other concerns. “If she makes it, it will go down in history. But my focus now is on how the audience will accept the film. It’s the first time I’ve done a romantic comedy,” said the producer about his film which has Harman playing Yogesh Patel who’s forced to choose a bride from out of the 12 proposals that he gets, all played by Priyanka, of course. “Playing 12 characters from 12 raashees was quite tough,” said the actress, who in reality is a true blue Cancerian. “I’m homely, emotional, possessive and very protective… but I’m also very moody. Sometimes, even I’ve no control over my moods,” she said, also confessing to her biggest fear, “I’m scared of heart breaks.” But that doesn’t change her belief in love marriages. “My mom gets into fits and tells me, ‘You know, you should get married now’ …but I don’t take her seriously ‘coz I’ve been hearing her say that since I was 20,” she laughed and added, “My ‘love’ marriage will be with the consent of my parents. So the boy better know — he’ll have to get my dad’s permission. We are very old fashioned that way.”

But Ashutosh is forward thinking. He didn’t doubt Harman’s skills even though his earlier films had bombed at the BO. “I asked myself and my wife Sunita two questions: Do we want him even if his LoveStory 2050 fails? What if Victory also bombs? But we decided that he was the best choice. I believe in giving a person a second chance,” he said.

After the release of the film, Ashutosh will be making the rounds of the theatres across the country, watching the film with the aam junta. “But the two theatres that are like barometers for me are Gaiety Galaxy and Chandan in Mumbai,” he said. Even Priyanka is keeping her fingers crossed, “I believe in box office success. Nobody makes films to sit and watch in their drawing rooms.”
