Rani Mukerji to work with filmmaker Deepa Mehta in the screen adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 04, 2010)

Last month, Rani Mukerji had a secret, productive and extremely encouraging meeting with author Salman Rushdie and director Deepa Mehta in Toronto. Rushdie and Mehta are coming together for a screen adaptation of the former’s celebrated Booker-winning novel Midnight’s Children. According to reliable sources, Rani met the author and the filmmaker for a good two hours and is now part of the screen adaptation. The buzz is Rushdie took a great fancy to her.

Deepa is evasive about confirming Rani’s presence in Midnight’s Children. She says, “Yes, Salman Rushdie and I met her informally in Toronto, but nothing has been finalised.”

However, reliable sources insist Rani is part of the coveted project which already has Shabana Azmi, Seema Biswas and Nandita Das in its cast.

Hinting at the possibility of working with Rani, Deepa says, “I don’t know about Rani’s current box-office status but I have always wanted to work with her. I saw her work in Hey Ram, Black, Bunty Aur Babli and Veer-Zaara and loved it. She is among the best talent in India today. Whether it is Preity Zinta (Heaven On Earth), Shabana Azmi (Fire) or Seema Biswas (Water), I have always enjoyed working with strong, female actors.”

Rani too is on the lookout for a challenge that will take her beyond the roles she has done in Hindi cinema so far. Interestingly, she has never worked with a female director in her entire career. She came close to working with Mira Nair in The Namesake. She lost the prized role to Tabu because she didn’t want to play Abhishek Bachchan’s mother. Later, Abhishek too opted out of the project.

Talks are underway with the Hollywood hotties to step the Indian silver screen opposite the hunk

HARSHADA REGE Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; December 17, 2009)

Bollywood babes better watch out, as apna hunk John Abraham is all set to sizzle alongside a Hollywood hottie on the big screen. It could just be the sexy Scarlett Johansson or the gorgeous Anne Hathaway! That’s the big plan kept under wraps for John’s film that will be directed by Shirish Kunder. The film titled Alien Sahib will be produced jointly by Shirish Kunder and Farah Khan along with John himself, and will be shot on an international level.

A source reveals, “Shirish is already in talks with Hollywood A-list stars like Scarlett and Anne and is flying down to Los Angeles finalise the deal. Shirish and John are doing everything possible to ensure that the movie is as perfect as it was conceptualised.” Shirish, who admits that talks are underway, says that they are also scouting for another Hollywood actor for the villain’s role. “The story has a tremendous intentional appeal. The female protagonist is a foreign national so we decided to cast a Hollywood actress for it. Today, actors abroad are aware of the work we do and are open to working in films here. We have the means and we are doing what’s best for the film,” says the filmmaker. John was noticed by the audience on the international circuit when his movie Water was screened at various film festivals across the globe. And now, with this film the actor seems ready to kickstart his career in the West.

Shirish says, “John is one of the few actors who can carry off a project like this. He has a huge fan base abroad. I see him fitting perfectly in a venture like this.” Not just the cast, but also the crew behind the camera will include a lot of technicians from the West, we hear.

Two women land an unexpected chance to be ushered inside Amitabh Bachchan’s house, as their health deteriorates outside his bungalow

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 16, 2009)

What happens when Amitabh Bachchan decides to step out of his bungalow and reach out to his fans? Chaos, traffic jams, a near stampede-like situation and of course, a crowd of crazy but satisfied fans.

That’s precisely what happened yesterday evening. However this time, a couple of women also got breathless. Apparently, Amitabh took control of the situation, instructed his security to take them inside Jalsa and ensured that nothing adverse happened to them.

As per his Sunday routine, Amitabh stepped out of Jalsa and met his fans. According to our source, he was giving television interviews for Paa when he decided to take a small break. He knew his fans were waiting outside. This time around though, he had planned a special surprise for them.

Amitabh Bachchan outside Jalsa

A witness to the situation outside Jalsa said, “When Amitabh stepped out and started distributing autographed pictures, people crowded to grab the pictures and to just touch the living legend. The word that Amitabh was out, spread like wild fire and the crowd soon increased manifold, causing a jam on the roads. Caught in the mini mêlée, a couple of elderly women started feeling breathless. It immediately caught Amitabh’s attention and he asked his security guards to rush them inside the house and give them some water. He then got his personal staff to distribute the remaining pictures to the people he could not personally reach out to.”

Appreciating the love shown by his fans, Amitabh said, “From the day I was discharged from Breach Candy hospital in 1982, every single day, crowds throng my gate. That’s 27 years without a break. I have never been able to explain this incredible outpour of emotions. I am indebted for life by my fans’ gestures and step out every Sunday to greet them. I give them autographs and pose for photographs as and when the frenzy permits. I felt like giving them autographed Paa photographs, so I sat up till late signing them.”

Post 3 Idiots, Aamir Khan wants to act in a full-on romantic film with Kareena Kapoor; he’s willing to put in his own money too. But Saif is skeptical

By Meena Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 13, 2009)

The chemistry between Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor in 3 Idiots is there for everyone to see and Aamir is keen on taking these vibrations to another level. He wants to make a romantic film with Kareena and has already zoomed in on an intimate subject for the film.

Kareena admitted that Aamir and she are planning their second film. She said, “Aamir is a cinematic genius. We must do at least one more film together, very soon. Aamir takes a long time to make up his mind about projects. I keep telling him that by the time he decides to make this romantic film with me, my niece Samaira will be ready for stardom.’’ Kareena is now trying to convince Aamir to direct their second film.

She added, “But I must tell you that Aamir is very chivalrous.” During a rain sequence for 3 Idiots, her eye make-up kept running into her eyes because of the water, and Aamir would stop the shoot to wipe it out every time. Kareena also said that she keeps talking about Aamir and as a result her beau Saif Ali Khan has warned her to ‘keep quiet about the subject’. Talk about being possessive.

In the meanwhile, talking about Kareena, Aamir said, “One can look at her all day and not feel tired.” Aamir confessed that he too wanted to make a romantic film with Kareena soon. He said, “Bebo has been asking me to direct her in a romantic film… and I am definitely contemplating it.” However, he refused to divulge any details. He added, “For the moment I am too preoccupied with 3 Idiots. I am a one film at a time kind of guy.”

Our sources added that the subject of Aamir’s film with Kareena is inspired by a Hollywood film which has been on his mind for years.

CLEANING UP THE MESS: Karan Nevatia and his friends scrape off the film posters that have been plastered on their murals along Senapati Bapat Marg in Lower Parel

Mahafreed Irani | TNN (THE TIMES OF INDIA; October 28, 2009)

Mumbai: On Tuesday evening, Karan Nevatia and his friends travelled to Lower Parel equipped with dishwashing liquid, knives and water. At 8 pm, the group started scraping off film posters that had been plastered on their murals along Senapati Bapat Marg.
Nevatia and a group of over hundred other citizens had participated in a wall painting event on Sunday, organised by the BMC and the Wall Project, a community of graffiti artists. But within 24 hours after the walls got a facelift, news of several paintings being vandalised broke on the Internet. Paintings of yellow giraffes and white Zoozoos were buried behind gawdy Bollywood kitsch.
Utsavi Jhaveri (19), a media student, was angry when she read about it. Jhaveri, along with her friend Sahil Mehta, went to the wall to tear off the posters. “We had to look for air bubbles between the posters and the wall. The glue made it difficult,’’ said the Lala Lajpatrai College student. “This was one time the BMC had come forward to do something positive with the participation of citizens. Sadly, it was destroyed within a few hours.’’
Calling it blasphemy, angry artists and Mumbaikars protested online against the producers of films Aladin, London Dreams, Gair and Canvas, whose posters had defaced the wall project. An online petition, titled ‘reclaim my wall’, and a movement to tear the remaining posters has been scheduled for Saturday.
On microblogging site Twitter, members tweeted at Aladin’s director Sujoy Ghosh and actor Riteish Deshmukh, after which they immediately apologised. Deshmukh tweeted, “Sincere apologies for the Aladin poster that been put on the wall. Insensitive n incorrect. Will look into it asap. Sorry guys.’’ Ghosh wrote, “Wall posters should be banned or be allowed only at authorised spots. Never again a wall poster. Promise.’’ The producers made sure the films’ posters were removed, following which music director Vishal Dadlani committed to help repaint the walls. Even Amitabh Bachchan’s blog wasn’t spared. A commentator wrote, “Many people are boycotting the film until the damage has been acknowledged and fixed. Hard to support the hard work of filmmakers when the hard work of the artists/painters has been completely disrespected in order to promote the film.’’

BRAVEHEART: Lisa Ray in a still from the film
Cooking With Stella
Filmmaker Deepa Mehta says actress is a portrait of courage

SUBHASH K JHA Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; September 13, 2009)

Fortitude under the most trying circumstances is not an easy situation. But ever since she blogged so dispassionately about her illness earlier this week, Canadian-Indian actress Lisa Ray has become a heroine far beyond the screen.

Now, on September 16 at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival, Lisa will walk the red carpet with filmmaker Deepa Mehta and her brother Dilip Kumar for the gala premiere of Dilip’s rom-com
Cooking With Stella.

“We’re looking at a woman who is a portrait of courage,” said Deepa who has known Lisa from the time they worked together on the lyrical Water four years ago. “When Lisa was shooting for Cooking With Stella, she had so much fun and there was no sign of the illness,” recalled Deepa. “The only outward manifestation of the crisis to come was her loss of appetite. I remember telling her, ‘Lisa, you aren’t eating anything.’” But Deepa learned about Lisa’s multiple myeloma two months ago. “She told me. It was hard to believe. She wanted to keep it very private. Only her close friends and family knew. Which is why I was surprised when Lisa blogged about her illness. I think she decided that by coming out she would not only be able to confront and overcome the
sad situation, but also encourage others in similarly troubled spaces to fight and win over their illnesses,” guessed Deepa.

Last week, I shared about my meeting with Ashutosh Rana and this week, I am reminded of when I saw Shabana Azmi. Me and my parents had gone to watch Shyam Benegal’s Karishma Kapoor-starrer Zubeidaa and at Gaiety, one of the most popular cinema theatres of Mumbai and she was present in the same show. The incident happened way back in Jan 2001, a time when there were no multiplexes and celebs used to frequent single screens to watch films. That was also a time when Shabana Azmi had shaved her head completely for Deepa Mehta’s film Water. Unfortunately, the film couldn’t start after it triggered a protest. The film was then shot in 2004. But Shabana Azmi, unfortunately, couldn’t be a part of the movie then. Her role was then played by Seema Biswas.

Coincidentally, Seema Biswas had to again step into Shabana’s shoes after she refused to play a part in an upcoming film Cooking With Stella (CWS). While Water was directed by Deepa Mehta, CWS is directed by Deepa’s brother, Dilip Mehta! Too much of a co-incidence, isn’t it?!

CWS is a story about a Canadian diplomat (Lisa Ray) and her chef-husband Michael (played by Canadian actor-director-filmmaker Don McKeller) who get posted in Delhi. The cook in her household is a charming lady Stella (Seema Biswas) who teaches Michael the best culinary secrets of India. The film, along with being light comedy, is also an issue-driven film.

arthAlthough there’s no doubt that Seema would have done a great job in CWS, I still feel it would have been great if Shabana had essayed the role. She looks stunning even at this age and has already proved to be one of the finest actresses of Indian cinema. Shabana refused CWS as she is not a good cook. This reason bewildered many and Subhash K Jha rightly said, “If Amitabh Bachchan, who notoriously cannot even boil an egg, played a famous London chef in Cheeni Kum, why could not Shabana be Stella!”

Moreover, Shabana also lost another plump role and that of SRK’s mother in Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan. She initially signed the film but then backed off after the filming got postponed, thanks to Shah Rukh Khan’s shoulder surgery. Just imagine-it would have been so very interesting to see SRK and Shabana Azmi together! And now Shabana is replaced by Kirron Kher. Now she’ll play SRK’s mom (Not again!).

Meanwhile, Shabana will be seen in Gurinder Chadha’s next flick, It’s A Wonderful Afterlife. For this film, she has put on 25 kgs! Whether it is shaving off her head or putting on weight, Shabana Azmi will go to any length for a film without any hesitation! Kudos to this wonderful actress!

vaada raha2

Bobby Deol-Kangna Ranaut starrer Vaada Raha is finally releasing tomorrow. The film is directed by Samir Karnik, who had made the acclaimed film Heroes. The film was ready since a long time and initially it was named Roshan. The promos of the film indicate that Kangna’s voice is dubbed in the film. The movie seems a family entertainer and gives a social message too that one should never lose hope. The film may turn out to be nice but it doesn’t seem that it would attract audiences due to bad promotion.
