She is indeed one of the faces to watch out for in the New Year 2010, for she hails from a family where Talent comes before anything and everything. She is none other than the svelte hour glass figured Sonam Kapoor, who is sizzling from the cover of the latest edition of Vogue.

In this edition, Miss Kapoor talks (read ‘reveals’) about how she went from flab to fab! For the impatient ones, Sonam attributes her makeover to the celeb trainer Zareen Watson, who, on her own admission Sonam says, “Helped me change the way I looked at nutrition and exercise. I had to make a lifestyle change: it’s the only thing that really works; it has to be how you lead your life, a regime you follow.” Sonam also talks about how easy or tough it was it for her hard to lose all those kilos. One has to give it to Sonam for being such a sport and calling a spade a spade!

They just don’t make like them anymore… or do they? Whatever the case maybe, there cannot be a better way to usher in the New Year 2010, than to pick up the January issue of Vogue!

Priyadarshan has always come up with zany comedies but De Dana Dan takes away the cake. In your entire life, you would have not seen such complicated and bizarre film ever, nor would you see it in future! There are some 25 characters; the entire action takes place inside a luxurious hotel and misunderstandings galore in the film. In fact, the flick thrives on misunderstandings and mistaken identities! However, like many other pathetic comedy flicks attempted this year, this doesn’t disappoint all thanks to Priyadarshan’s excellent handling and execution!

The story of the movie: Nitin Bankar (Akshay Kumar) works for Archana (Archana Puran Singh), a rich lady in Singapore and who loves her pet dog named Moolchandji the most! Nitin’s only friend is Ram (Suniel Shetty). While Nitin is in love with Anjali (Katrina Kaif), Ram loves Manpreet (Sameera Reddy). However, both Anjali and Manpreet are born and brought up in rich families and their families would not like their daughters to marry financially unstable men. So Nitin and Ram come up with plan to get quick money-they decide to kidnap Moolchandji in exchange of a huge ransom from Archana! Without realizing that the kidnapping has gone awry, both hide in the luxurious Pan Pacific Hotel waiting for the ransom. Unfortunately, there are more colourful, anti-social, gadbad-types people in the hotel at that time! And then starts the mother of all misunderstandings, mistaken identities and unlimited, uninterrupted laughter for the viewers!

There is absolutely no logic whatsoever in De Dana Dan. There are some big big loopholes in the story too! But if you are lover of masala Hindi comedies, then you won’t mind at all as there is so much fun happening in the film every second! Except during the songs, you won’t get a chance to yawn or check out the time in your watch or look anywhere else than the screen!

The first half is where the characters are introduced and established which is perfectly done. The asli mazaa begins when Nitin and Ram hatch the kidnap plan. The actual kidnapping and the events that follow was brilliant! Also, there are lots of tracks going on in the film, each one which is well written and worked upon. There is Harbans Chadda (Paresh Rawal) who is deep in debt and who wants to marry off his son Nonny (Chunky Pandey) to the best amir khandaan ki ladki; there is Brij Mohan Oberoi (Manoj Joshi) who is happy to marry off her manglik daughter Manpreet to Nonny; then there is smart theif cum club dancer (Neha Dhupia), Harban’s unfaithful wife Pammi (Aditi Govitrikar), a killer on a mission Peshawarwala (Johny Lever), an oversmart waiter Duggu (Rajpal Yadav), an Indian ambassador Paramjeet Lamba (Vikram Gokhale) and her wife (Supriya Karnik), Anjali’s dad Kakkad (Tinu Anand), Anti-corruption cop (Sharat Saxena) and a letch (Shakti Kapoor) (I hope I haven’t left anyone). Whew! With so many characters with interesting characteristics, Priyadarshan and the writing team excellently links up unrelated characters creating multiple mistaken identities, all which provide laughter unlimited!

The first half is laced with 4 songs but still the flick didn’t turn boring. However, it was the 2nd half where at a point, everything gets too monotonous and you want the flick to end. In fact, the film is close to 2 hrs 45 minutes. However, the climax again takes the film up and it was the most weird and bizarre climax I have ever witnessed! Once again, I state that don’t watch the flick if you can’t stand any nonsense in films. Or else you’ll surely faint watching the nonsense climax! But for those who love comedies, the climax will surely entertain!

With so many characters, it becomes difficult to decide who the best was. In fact all put their best foot forward and contribute well. Akshay Kumar was like everytime rocking! His films may not entertain everytime but he always impresses. In fact, it was so great to see a fantastic Akshay Kumar film after so long (the last such film was Welcome, 2 years back). Keep rocking Akki! Suniel Shetty gives an amazing performance and it was great to see him after a long time! Watch out for him in his next, Red Alert!

From the rest, the ones who impress and provide maximum laughs are Paresh Rawal, Archana Puran Singh, Johny Lever and Vikram Gokhale. Vikram Gokhale particularly entertains a lot! The rest-Asrani, Chunky Pandey (he had no role at all!), Manoj Joshi, Rajpal Yadav, Supriya Karnik, Tinu Anand and Sharat Saxena also did a nice job but it got overshadowed in presence of so many actors. Producer Ratan Jain is also there in the film!

As for the heroines, Katrina Kaif has the meatiest role and sizzles full on in the song Gale Lag Ja. Neha Dhupia gives a bindass performance. Sameera Reddy looks charming but hardly has any dialogues. Aditi Govitrikar’s performance was flawless.

Music was fine. Baamulaiza, Gale Lag Ja and Rishte Naate are the best songs of the lot. K Ahambaram’s cinematography was too shaky in some scenes which didn’t work. Salim-Suliaman’s background score, as usual, was flawless. Sabu Cyril’s production design deserves special appreciation especially for the climax where the entire hotel gets flooded. Some parts of the hotel were recreated in Mumbai, it was flooded and shot and it was so accurately done that it’s impossible to distinguish the actual hotel in Singapore from the set! Great work! But at the same time, disappointed to see enormous quantity of water wasted under the guise of entertainment!

Finally, we come to the writers and director. Suresh Krisshnan’s story was unusual. Jay Master’s dialogues were amazing and also contribute to the entertainment quotient in the film! And this is undoubtedly Priyadarshan’s one of the finest works! It requires guts and courage to screenwrite a film with so many complicated and tangled scenes and then directing it and also giving it a proper conclusion. Any other director would have either failed miserably or would have run away midway! So hats off to Priyan….keep giving us such films!

This time, there would be no section of Best Scenes….there are some 3 to 4 dozen memorable scenes, half of which I can’t even recollect now but enjoyed while watching! So please excuse this time!

On the whole, De Dana Dan is one of the most complicated comedies of all time. Those who love Priyadarshan and his slapstick comedies should not even think of missing it!

Socialite Kajal Anand allegedly asked film critic Khalid Mohamed to leave the theatre after he asked her to take a good look at herself in the mirror…

For the rarified select gathering, it was meant to be a cozy evening with close friends from the film fraternity to celebrate the release of Kurbaan last week. A special preview, hosted by socialite Kajal Anand, thus comprised the Who’s Who of tinsel town and the usual sprinkling of society divas and dudes.

But as the evening panned out, guests, comprising socialites and Bollywood movers and shakers, were shocked with what seemed to be a comedy of errors, gone horribly wrong.

Film critic Khalid Mohamed and socialite Kajal Anand had a very public falling-out at this private screening of the film starring Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan.

It all started like this: a socialite at the evening approached famed film critic Khalid Mohamed, but made the mistake of assuming him to be someone else. She then, on realising her faux pas, supposedly apologised for this. An eyewitness claims that Mohamed replied with, “You know, it’s alright. I don’t even care to know you, and I don’t even know who you are.” Realising that things were getting a little choppy on the guest-list front, Kajal Anand then walked up to the film critic, supposedly to ask him to let go and make peace.

But Anand caught Mohamed at a wrong time indeed; he then began directing his ire towards her, sources claim. And he certainly didn’t mince his words. “Have you seen yourself in the mirror lately? You are a fat hag! How do your friends even hang out with someone like you? Now I know that you’ll go later to Mannat and bitch  with the rest of that gang of yours. That’s all you’re famous for…” is what he is alleged to have told the socialite.

On hearing all this, Kajal Anand then asked Khalid Mohamed to leave. “Please leave this preview. You are never welcome again,” said she. An awkward ceasefire ensued, as both parties went back to their seats, but there was no missing the hushed silence of the collected crowd, who were still soaking in the slow-but-sure repercussions of what was a jarring end to a rather long-standing friendship.

Khalid Mohamed has been a famed film critic for almost 30 years. Kajal Anand is a well-known socialite who hobnobs with both, SoBo A-listers and eminent names from Bollywood aristocracy; it is a dexterity that makes her one of the more powerful society names in Bombay today.

Khalid Mohamed sat at his seat, fuming for some time. Then at the interval, he stormed out, something that nobody missed, given what had preceded this exit.

The incident has therefore sent shockwaves in the industry and society circles, even if not many are willing to comment on the melee, given the pedigree of both parties involved. Yet when contacted, Kajal herself did not deny the story. All she said was, “It is entirely your prerogative to do the story; I have no comments to offer on this incident.” When Khalid Mohamed was contacted about this fracas, he confirmed the story as well.

“No, it didn’t happen like you say it. The first preview for Kurbaan was a Mumbai Police screening which I had missed. The second one was hosted by Kajal Anand; here a girl walked up to me and mistook me for a furniture designer, introducing herself as Prerna Goel. This girl, Prerna Goel, was behaving very funnily. I even remember asking Kajal, ‘What sort of friends do you have?’ I don’t know why, but Kajal was behaving obnoxiously that day. She is a friend but she tends to be, at times, like this. I never told her, ‘You’re fat’. But I did say, ‘Look at yourself in the mirror.’ And I walked out in the interval with a friend who was accompanying me. At that moment, I remember Kajal standing with Yash Birla and a couple of other people,” said the film critic.

TOTAL DHAMAAL: Katrina Kaif, Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Suneil Shetty

The winning Hera Pheri team is ready to create a laugh riot… this time with Katrina Kaif

Life’s a laugh riot, especially when you have the hit combination of Hera Pheri — director Priyadarshan, actors Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal — joining forces again. Ratan Jain’s De Dana Dan has an ensemble cast of 26 of the top leading comic actors of Bollywood. The film’s releasing on November 27 and promises to have people rolling in the aisles. For that the audience will have to wait for sometime but BT got to witness the funny side of Akki, Suniel and Paresh on the sets of the film itself.
At around 6.30 am on a November morning, these 40-plus men were horsing around like precocious school kids and using their finger tips to do some serious counting. “I’ve done 15,” said Paresh to which Suniel added, “I’ve done eight.” And when Akki said, “I’ve done just five,” Paresh and Suniel chorused, “Loser, we’ve beaten you hollow.” Wondering what they were counting? It’s the number of movies each of them has done with the National Award winning director Priyadarshan. Looking at the trio, Ratan Jain, said, “For most of the filmmakers of Bollywood, this is a dream team. The Hera Pheri combo is back to entertain after a gap of nine years. Of course, as a bonus, there is the hit jodi of Akshay and Katrina who have a magical romantic track in the film.” Jain is on a high because his banner Venus Productions has had a long-standing association with Priyadarshan — having produced Hungama, Hulchul, Garam Masala and now De Dana Dan. And Katrina, who has delivered some of her biggest hits with Akshay, like Welcome, Namastey London and Singh is Kinng, is also hopeful that their pairing will work this time around too.

SUBHASH K JHA (Mid-Day; November 6, 2009)

Prakash Jha has finally relented to Nana Patekar’s pleas begging forgiveness and has decided to forgive, if not forget Nana’s behaviour.

“It’s impossible to forget what he did. But Nana has been constantly trying to reach out since the ugly incident.
I’ve told him I’ll have a cup of tea with him when I return to Mumbai tomorrow. Today is my last day of Rajneeti.” Prakash said from Bhopal on Wednesday afternoon.

Will dub, won’t shoot

In fact, Prakash had decided to not allow Nana to dub his lines. “Now I’ll let him dub. But there’s no question of shooting the scenes that he lost out on.”

Earlier Prakash was unrelenting. “I know I said there was no question of a rapprochement. Nana Patekar was a closed chapter for me. My entire crew tolerated him because of me. But he’s lonely and he accepts his mistake.
I can’t sit in judgment on him.”

The director has already changed the script to make do without Nana and has added a voiceover, ” I had to shoot six to seven scenes of Nana as a young man. I changed the scene and shot it without him. When I had worked with Nana in Apaharan, I hadn’t seen this tantrum-throwing side of him on the sets.”

Had no choice

After his initial outburst, Nana tried to make amends. Recalls Prakash, “Later that day, he calmed down and tried to return to the sets. I told him he wasn’t welcome ever on my sets. As far as shooting goes, we had to compromise. We had to complete all his scenes without him. We introduced a voiceover to explain his absence.

Jha concludes, “I had no choice but to forgive him. You don’t know how much I’ve looked after him. I’ve stood by him through all his temper tantrums and bad moods. But I can’t allow him to walk all over me. He needs to do something about his temper. ”

Lekin, hua kya tha?
On October 27, during the shooting of Rajneeti, Prakash and Nana had a huge showdown in Bhopal over the way the actor was supposed to do a scene. The actor left in a huff after showering abuses on Prakash. Though used to Nana’s abusive ways, Prakash wasn’t willing to take the barrage of insults lying down. He took up Nana’s offer of letting the actor go and also vowed never to be friends with Nana again. But the actor kept pleading.

Shiney Ahuja’s character in Sudhir Mishra’s Hitman has been changed from an assassin to a repentant assassin, lest the role hampers his case

Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, who has been a mentor and friend to Shiney Ahuja, has once again proved his affection for the actor. Sudhir, who is doing Hitman with the actor, is shaping Shiney’s lead role in the film in such a way that it doesn’t harm his precarious position vis-à-vis the judiciary.

The actor is out on bail after being imprisoned for alleged charges of raping his domestic help.

Confirming the news, Sudhir says, “Hitman is the story of an assassin who looks back on his violent life the day that he thinks he will die. We will certainly not show him in a light that will hamper his case or image. My writer, Vinitesh is putting together the character in a way that it doesn’t clash with Shiney’s interests. In my film, he is a repentant hitman. We want the law to take its course, but at the same time, we want Shiney to feel he is part of the mainstream.”

Sudhir, who speaks regularly with Shiney, who’s now in Delhi, says the actor had not quite recovered from his 100-day trauma. “He probably never will. No one can fully recover from such an ordeal. But at least friends should make him feel welcome and comfortable. If, as you say, he is being ostracised, then it’s really sad. Now that he is out, Shiney needs to lead a normal life, which he is struggling with currently. At the moment, he’s struggling hard to get back to being the way he was. I introduced Shiney because I had full faith in him as an actor and a human being. The only reason Shiney is not in my recent films is because he didn’t suit the roles.”

For some mysterious reason, the third installment of the Hera Pheri series starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif will be titled Hera Pheri 4

The much-awaited Hera Pheri sequel is finally taking shape. Interestingly, this third installment in the Hera Pheri series is called Hera Pheri 4.

A source says, “After the super success of Hera Pheri and Phir Hera Pheri, producer Firoz Nadiadwala has been planning the third installment. However, the film was taking its own time. The promos of the forthcoming film De Dana Dan starring Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal are being shown with Blue (which releases today) at the trail shows. The industry insiders have begun talking about the winning combination of Akshay, Sunil and Paresh. Firozbhai saw the promos and immediately got in touch in Akshay for the much-awaited installment. Although Akshay’s date diary is packed, he came to Firoz’s rescue by accommodating the film. However, the interesting bit is that the film will be titled Hera Pheri 4 and not 3. The reason for the same will be revealed in the promos of the film, once it is ready.”

Although Hera Pheri was directed by Priyadarshan and Phir Hera Pheri by Neeraj Vohra, Hera Pheri 4 will be directed by Anees Bazmee. The source adds, “Akshay, Firoz and Anees last came together for Welcome (2007). Katrina Kaif will play the female lead in Hera Pheri 4, which is slated to go on the floors in March next year.”

Akshay Kumar remained unavailable for comment.
