Mumbai, Jan 2 (IANS) Director Rajkumar Hirani Saturday produced the credits agreement with author Chetan Bhagat for hit film ‘3 Idiots’ and maintained that the movie was not a copy of the bestseller ‘Five Point Someone’.

Hirani distributed copies of an agreement of credit and a non-disclosure agreement signed by Bhagat Sep 1, 2005 and Oct 3, 2007 respectively. Screenplay writer Abhijat Joshi was also present at the media meet.

‘It shall be obligatory on the part of the producer to accord credit to the author in the rolling credits… as under – Based on the novel ‘Five Point Someone’,’ the agreement on the issue of credit states.

The non-disclosure agreement was signed after Hirani gave a ‘four-hour narration’ of the final script to Bhagat, the director said.

Hirani also supported his argument by giving a copy of an interview that Bhagat gave to IANS Sep 26, 2008 titled: ‘I liked the final script of ‘Three Idiots’: Chetan Bhagat.’

‘The director took my book as the base but he has changed it according to his requirements. He took permission from me before taking my story but has not involved me in making it into the final script. But he has shown me the final script and I have liked it too,’ Bhagat had told IANS.

The credit row surfaced after Bhagat had posted on his blog that ’70 percent’ of ‘3 Idiots’ is based on his book and therefore he should have got a prominent place in the rolling credits as well as during the film promotion. He also said that he was not shown the final script.

Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra has said that as per their agreement, Bhagat’s name appeared in the rolling credits and he was paid the due amount.

Hirani, who has helmed movies like ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ and ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’, also pointed out that the producer had bought the rights of ‘Five Point Someone’.

Hence, it was their prerogative whether to use ‘five percent of the book or 70 percent of it’.

The raging controversy over the credit for the story in ‘3 Idiots’ escalated on Saturday with director Rajkumar Hirani accusing author Chetan Bhagat of “lying” despite agreeing to several conditions including a rolling credit in a contract.

Hirani, who also shares the writing credit with scriptwriter Abhijat Joshi in the Aamir Khan starrer, said Bhagat had approved the film’s script and agreed to the condition that it would be different from his book.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Hirani showed the contract signed with Bhagat, whose novel “Five Point Someone” became the basis for the film. The director said he had made a four-hour narration of the script to the author.

“We never denied Bhagat the credit. I am confused as to why is he saying all these things after the film’s release. We have not stolen the story, we have purchased the rights of the book and can modify or change it as per our requirements. There is nothing illegal in it. Chetan is lying,” Hirani said.

He said that as per the contract signed between Bhagat and producers of the film, it was obligatory on part of the latter to mention in rolling credits that the film was based the novel.

“His name appears immediately after the main cast in the rolling credits. If he wanted to see his name in opening part of the film, he should have asked us after reading the contract itself. I am myself a writer and I respect writers,” Hirani said.

Reacting to Hirani’s statement, Bhagat accused the film-makers of abusing the contract.

Shahid Kapoor’s know-it-all attitude during the making of Chance Pe Dance has soured his relationship with director Ken Ghosh, who was also the actor’s close friend

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 21, 2009)

Shahid Kapoor

Six years ago Shahid Kapoor and director Ken Ghosh were buddies when they first worked together in Ishq Vishk. Their friendship was going strong even when Ken made his second film with Shahid, Fida (2004). Much has changed today and the camaraderie between the two has ended.

A source from the sets of the forthcoming Shahid starrer Chance Pe Dance, directed by Ken, said, “Everything was hunky dory when Chance Pe Dance (earlier titled Yahoo) went on the floors. The film took a long time to complete as the shooting was stalled when Jiah Khan was replaced by Genelia D’Souza. Meanwhile, as Shahid starred in a few films and grew in popularity, his attitude with the people he had known over the years took a turn for the worse. Many of his friends and colleagues were shocked at his changed behaviour. Ken too was shocked but he somehow took it in his stride and completed the film.”

Commenting on the bone of contention between Shahid and Ken, the source said, “Shahid was working with prominent directors like Imtiaz Ali (Jab We Met), Aziz Mirza (Kismat Connection), Yash Raj Films (Dil Bole Hadippa), Vishal Bhardwaj (Kaminey) while Chance Pe Dance was being made. Gradually, he started believing that he knew more than Ken because of which he started interfering a lot in the making of Ken’s film. Consequently, the two had their share of differences, which ultimately snowballed into serious issues.”

Ken Ghosh

Throwing more light on the soured relationship between Shahid and Ken, the source added, “Actually, quite a few film industrywallahs are aware of the differences between Shahid and Ken in the recent past. It’s just that nobody talks about it and Shahid and Ken too are not very vocal about their issues.”

When we asked Ken about his changed equation with Shahid, he said, “When Ishq Vishk released, Shahid was 22. Today, he is 28. There is bound to be a change.”

We sent a text message to Shahid but he was unavailable for comment.

Ken Ghosh Ken Ghosh has finally zeroed in the title of his next film, starring Shahid Kapoor and Genelia D’Souza in the lead. Initially, the makers were keen on calling it YAHOO, but have finally okayed a new title. It’s CHANCE PE DANCE.

“But when did we ever decide on YAHOO? Sure, we were toying with a lot of names, but hadn’t okayed on any one particular title,” Ken clarifies. The first look image of the film, with the new title obviously, will be released in a few weeks from now, while the first trailer of the film will be included in the prints of WHAT’S YOUR RAASHEE?.

Isn’t there too much of Shahid Kapoor these days? KAMINEY has just released, while the promotions of DIL BOLE HADIPPA have gathered momentum and CHANCE PE DANCE will follow next. “See, the three films have a different feel and they also look different. Even the roles that Shahid is enacting are diverse in each case. Plus, there will be a 2-month gap between DIL BOLE HADIPPA and CHANCE PE DANCE,” Ken reasons.

Shahid and Genelia have been teamed for the first time in CHANCE PE DANCE. “They look great together. I’ve worked with Shahid-Amrita and Shahid-Kareena in the past and I can say with confidence that the Shahid-Genelia pairing is at par with those pairings,” Ken states.

Meanwhile, Ken begins work on his next project after CHANCE PE DANCE. The film will be produced by Ramesh Taurani and star Neil Nitin Mukesh in the lead.

Priyanka Chopra played coy when she was asked to kiss Shahid Kapoor in Kaminey
By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 01, 2009)

While Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor may have had sizzling chemistry off screen a while ago, she shied away from kissing him on screen for Kaminey. Apparently, Priyanka is not a fan of PDA (Public Display of Affection), on and off screen. She refused to lock lips with Shahid in a scene that leads to love making, which eventually leads to her getting knocked up. Now if you won’t kiss, it’s kind of hard to reach the final result, right? But it still took Vishal Bharadwaj two months to convince her to do the scene.

The intimate scene was first shot in Lonavala, but Vishal felt that the result wasn’t very convincing. So, he suggested that they kiss — an idea that did not appeal to Priyanka.

It can’t be that she was repulsed by her co-star, so why did she protest? Our source revealed, “Priyanka said that she was not told about the scene in advance. She categorically told Vishal that she was uncomfortable doing the kissing scene. Vishal did not press the issue and shot the scene without the kiss.”

Vishal was not satisfied, so after a few days, he called the couple to check out the scene. But Shahid was not free to reshoot because he was busy with Ken Ghosh’s Yahoo by then.

“Later, when Priyanka and Shahid saw the scene together with Vishal, Priyanka realised that something was amiss. She understood Vishal’s perspective and agreed to kiss Shahid,” our source added.

Wasn’t she in love with Shahid while shooting for the film? “We don’t know about that,” our source said.

The upshot was that the scene now has them lip-locked, but this time it was shot in Mumbai. Vishal needed five retakes since he wanted to shoot it from different angles. The director refused to comment, but confirmed the story.

… says Rajiv Gandhi Award nominee Shahid Kapoor, who has three releases slated for this year

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; July 17, 2009)

Trust a Congressman to be the one to break such news. It was left to Ritiesh Deshmukh to be the one to bring the glad tidings to Shahid Kapoor. The young actor, who has three releases this year in Vishal Bharadwaj’s Kaminey (August 14), Aditya Chopra’s Dil Bole Hadippa! (September 18) and Ken Ghosh’s Yahoo (year end), has been nominated as Best Actor for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Award 2009. Shahid, whose performance in 2007’s Jab We Met is still being discussed, blushed, “I’m too young to be receiving such a big honour, but I’m also humbled.’’

He is happy, also, with the promos of Kaminey and Dil Bole Hadippa! which
are on air currently. “They are absolutely contrasting,’’ said the actor thrilled to be able to showcase his entire oeuvre this year. “And the cherry on the cake is the fact that Yahoo has me doing what I love best — dancing! Four years of all that I learned in dance has gone into this one film.’’

While the Kaminey promotions carry the buzz of his reported affair with Priyanka Chopra, Shahid felt, “Dil Bole Hadippa! has an edge because people are inquisitive about Rani Mukerji and me. They want to know more about our screen chemistry.’’

He is also happy to team up with the seasonal flavour Genelia D’Souza in Yahoo and said, “Finally I’m in a space where I can do whatever I wish as far as my roles go.’’

Genelia D’Souza, in a break from being a diva down South, tells BT that Bollywood is happening slowly for her…

NIMISHA TIWARI Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; July 15, 2009)

Despite her big break in Bollywood last year with Jaane Tu… opposite Imran Khan, Genelia D’Souza hasn’t had another release as yet, and she is seen more in TV commercials than promos for forthcoming films with big banners. While other actresses her age, who made their debut around the same time, are already doing their third and fourth films. “What’s the definition of a big banner,” she asks. “I have worked with UTV, Studio 18, Aamir Khan Productions, done films in the South, and I have four releases this year. There’s one opposite Fardeen Khan, It’s My Life opposite Hurman Baweja, Hook Ya Crook with John Abraham and Yahoo with Shahid Kapoor. Isn’t that a lot?” But, yes, she agrees, that you come into your own in Bollywood only when you act with the Khans. And that kind of film is eluding her currently. “Like every young girl, I too would like to work with the Khans, but each film has a script and only a suitable actor can play that role,” she admits. Meanwhile, she’s in Mumbai on a break from the South, where the name Genelia D’Souza is bigger news than in Bollywood. BT caught her splashing around in the rain near the new Bandra-Worli Sealink. “It’s been five years since I played football in the rains. Do you know I was a national level football player in college,” she asks, surprising us.
