Badly Burnt In Year Gone By, Industry Looks To Strong Content

Bharati Dubey | TNN (THE TIMES OF INDIA; January 3, 2010)

Pursue excellence and success will pursue you,’’ was what Aamir Khan’s character philosophised in 3 Idiots. But when the lights dimmed and audiences sat down after the National Anthem, what greeted them on screens for most part of the year was average, even poor fare, making 2009 the annus horribilis of the first decade of the 21st century. More than 200 films, with Rs 1500 crore at stake, released last year but almost Rs 1000 crore sank in the sea of mediocrity without a bubble, the sharks-andsexy bikini Blue leading the pack.
Added to it was the multiplex strike which cost around Rs 350 crore, upset release dates forcing films to share Fridays and dent each others’ collections. A multiplex source said, “Cannibalisation caused by big films’ release dates clashing could have been avoided.’’

The year began with Chandni Chowk To China that lost 50% of its Rs 65-crore budget. And marketing blitzkreigs couldn’t save a Blue and Kambakkht Ishq and the audience clearly showed content was king with surprise hits like DevD, New York, WaKe Up Sid and Ajab Prem ki Gajab Kahani. DevD made Rs 6 crore, collected Rs 25 crore at the box office while its ancillary rights made another Rs 5 crore and there are still more satellite runs to be sold. Trade experts also put films like Love Aaj Kal, Ajab Prem ki Gajab Kahani, Wanted among the certified hits, followed by profitable films like Paa, All The Best, De Dana Dan and Raaz 2.

But Bollywood’s loss was Hollywood’s gain, with films like 2012 and Avatar (that collected a whopping Rs 50 crore so far) filling the void for good entertainment.

It was left to And Aamir Khan to play Santa Claus third year in a row, with 3 Idiots the biggest hit of the year. It grossed a phenomenal Rs 100 crore in India in the first four days, and Rs 175 crore worldwide till December 31, even denting into collections of Avatar. Trade analyst Amod Mehra said, “What Ghajini collected in a week, this film has done in three days.

Corporates didn’t really have a great year in 2009 and after the bloodbath in the first half of the year, most of them avoided buying films outright, with even 3 Idiots being released on commission.

Thus 2010 dawns to vastly altered realities — purse strings have tightened by cautious corporates; big banners are no guarantee for success and may dish out big turkeys instead; marketing and stars don’t sell, a good story does; and the days of astronomical fees are over.

“Audiences are very smart, the content ultimately will guide their choices and approval. Marketing and hype will only work if content supports that hype. We may not have a Blue this year but projects like Veer and Prince are costly and prima facie look difficult in terms of recoveries,’’ says a trade expert.

So when Akshay Kumar, blamed for soaring star prices, announced towards the end of 2009 that he would not charge any fee for Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khaan, it was a lifeline for the industry that had almost gone into the ICU.

Says Amod Mehra, “It is not that people did not come to watch Akshay Kumar films in 2009, it is just that the budgets of the films were so high and his remuneration was almost 40% of those budgets, so recoveries were not possible despite a good opening. But now that the actors are looking at sharing profit with the producer after the cost of the film has been recovered like in the case of Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots then it will be fair enough. Cutting down of star prices will definitely reduce the budget of films and they will become viable and that is definitely going to be the trend in 2010.”

The year thankfully doesnt have a Rs 100-crore Blue in its line-up. Last year most production houses scrapped films as star prices were not viable. In fact, it is learnt Saif Ali Khan is reworking the budget of his next film Agent Vinod starring Kareena and himself. In fact, 2010 is short on mega projects as budget constraints ensured very few got on the floors in 2009.

The first biggie of 2010 will be Veer,
followed by Rann, My Name is Khan, Action Replay, Kites and House Full in the first half of the year. The second half of the year would have Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzarish and Patiala House.

The action in 2010 seems definitely more in mid-size and multiplex projects that would have strong and clutterbreaking content. “There are a lot of films this year that may not topline the Khans or Hrithik Roshan but still have a decent line-up of names and would be thematically different. Tight budgets and good content seem to be the mantra in the decision making corridors of Bollywood. Each company is carefully evaluating its options and are not getting carried away,’’ says Priti Shahni of Indian Films. Corporates, for instance, have decided to take films only on commission, and not buy them outright.

Shahid Kapoor’s Chance Pe Dance, Striker starring Rang De Basanti’s Siddharth, Aamir Khan Productions’ Peepli Live, Vishal Bharadwaj’s Ishqiya would release in the first half of 2010.

Generation-next too would be making its presence felt with Ranbir Kapoor in Anjana Anjani and Rajneeti, Imran Khan in I Hate Love Stories, Sonam Kapoor in Ayesha, and Deepika Padukone in House Full.

As the record breaking run of 3 Idiots that has spilled over to 2010 has shown, great content along with great pre-release buzz make the perfect mix.

Salman Khan is looking for a Katrina Kaif lookalike for sister Alvira’s film, Paris

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 08, 2009)

Katrina Kaif

What is it with Salman Khan and his penchant for expressing his love for women by finding their lookalikes and making them film stars? It first started with Salman getting newcomer Sneha Ullal, who uncannily resembles his former love Aishwarya Rai, to star opposite him in Lucky. Then, Salman cast newcomer Zarine Khan, who is believed to be a spitting image of his girlfriend Katrina Kaif, to star opposite him in his forthcoming film, Veer.

Now, Salman is all set to make a Parisian love story for which he has been desperately looking for an actress who looks exactly like Katrina. The film will be produced by his sister Alvira and her husband Atul Agnihotri.

Post-Wanted Salman Khan has turned into quite a home bird. His next two films to go on the floors will be produced by his brother Arbaaz followed by his sister Alvira and brother-in-law Atul’s Parisian love story. Boney Kapoor’s two back-to-back sequels to No Entry and Wanted will have to wait until the end of the next year.

A source says, “Salman has become very family-oriented lately. He wants his stardom to benefit all his loved ones. He is going all-out to make sure that Arbaaz and Alivira’s films rock.”

Atul and Alvira Agnihotri

While Arbaaz’s film is purely desi and located in the heartland of North India, Alvira and Atul’s film to be directed by Prem Soni is a tender love story set in Paris for which the brief for finalising a female lead is that she must resemble Katrina. Now, Salman is on the look-out for a girl with distinctly Caucasian looks.

“In fact, Salman was keen to cast Katrina in Paris but they have mutually agreed not to star together. Salman has instructed an agency in Paris to look for a girl who looks partly Indian and partly like a foreigner,” says the source.

Sussanne Roshan’s holiday with her mother Zarine Khan in Italy ends in a nightmare. A bag containing their passports was robbed a few minutes before they were to board a Mumbai-bound flight
By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 12, 2009)
Yesterday, Hrithik Roshan’s wife Sussanne was robbed in Italy. The unfortunate incident happened at Milan airport around 3pm IST when Sussanne and her mother Zarine Khan were about to board a Mumbai-bound flight after their holiday.

The drama unfolded when Zarine discovered that her bag was missing. A source said, “The bag contained a few valuables, credit cards, and most importantly Sussanne and Zarine’s passports.” Consequently, Sussanne and her mother were stranded in Milan. They are expected to return to Mumbai either tonight or tomorrow.

Sussanne and Zarine immediately notified the airport authorities about the theft and tried their best to locate the thief at the airport but it was a futile attempt.

Zarine Khan and Sussanne Roshan

When the two then called up their family and friends to inform them about their ordeal, the Khans and Roshans quickly made a few arrangements from Mumbai so that Sussanne and Zarine would have to undergo as little trouble as possible. To begin with, photocopies of their passports were emailed to Sussanne. Thereafter, Sussanne and Zarine approached the Indian Embassy who issued them new passports. The two ladies again checked into the same hotel where they had been staying during their vacation as they had missed their flight and couldn’t board the next immediate one since their passports were in the stolen bag.

“It was a harrowing experience for Sussanne and Zarine. They were terribly upset after the theft. After a long holiday, the last thing they expected was to have a problem like this on their return journey,” added our source.

Confirming the story, Sussanne’s sister Farah Ali Khan said, “Yes, all this did happen. It was rather unfortunate. I spoke to my mother and sister and they are fine now.”

Following article (interview of Sussanne Roshan) appeared on Apr 8  in MUMBAI MIRROR:

Hrithik Roshan wed longtime sweetheart Sussanne Khan on December 20, 2000. Over the years, Hrithik and Sussanne were the quintessential happily married couple who always were seen together and never shied away from PDA. Even after Hrithik became one of the hottest stars and worked with some of the most beautiful actresses, his marriage with Sussanne was rock solid. But lately, there have been rumours that all is not well between the two. Many blame it on Hrithik’s proximity with Latino actress Barbara Mori, his co-star in his home production, Kites. After yesterday’s story in a section of the media saying that Hrithik and Sussanne have split, the usually reticent Sussanne decided to speak up for herself and her family to squash the rumours…

• Have you and Hrithik split?

Rubbish. Everything is fine. But yes, Hrithik and I are very upset with the story of our so-called split. Nobody can break my marriage with Hrithik. We are together. Our relationship is very strong.

• You and your children are staying at your parents’ (Sanjay and Zarine Khan) house?

That’s right. But I am not alone. Hrithik is with me. He came from Cape Town last night and stayed with me. I fail to understand why so much crap is being circulated about us. Somebody is trying to put Hrithik down.

• How have your parents taken this?

They are not going to be affected by cheap stunts. I think some enemy is trying to break my relationship with Hrithik. They want to scar the family that’s never been scarred (pauses). But this happens doesn’t it? Every actor faces this problem.Such rumours are part of the industry.

• Why are you staying at your parents’ house since the past few days?

We have a termite problem on our floor (10th Floor in Palazzio). We had been planning to do some renovation since a long time. Initially, we had planned to shift to the JW Marriott until the work was over. But after 26/11, we temporarily put on hold the idea of shifting. Now that the renovation has started, I am staying at my parents’ house.

• But rumours about Hrithik and Barbara’s affair have been only getting stronger.

So? Barbara has come home so often. Hrithik, she and I have gone out together. We are friends.

• It is said that Hrithik and Barbara went to Amby Valley together?

• Did you question Hrithik about it?

There is nothing to ask Hrithik about. I know for a fact that there is no truth in this.

• How is Hrithik as a husband?

He is an amazing human being. He and I share a very beautiful and strong relationship.

• Are you in touch with Barbara Mori after she left India?

Of course, we are in touch with Barbara. She is a part of our forthcoming film (Kites) and she is also a family friend.

Hrithik and Sussanne

• Has Barbara called you or Hrithik after the news about your so-called split?

No, but we are going to call her. I guess we’ll have a good laugh over it.

• How is your interior designing work progressing?

That too is going fine. I am going to do up Shilpa Shetty’s (Ruia Park) house. And I have one more project at hand – my two lovely kids, Hrehaan and Hridhaan.

Mrs Roshan has reportedly walked out on her husband and moved into her parents’ home, due to Hrithik’s rowing proximity to his Kites co-star Barbara Mori

The worst seems to have come true for one of the industry’s most loved couples. If reports are to be believed, Susanne Roshan has walked out on husband Hrithik with their two kids and moved into her parents’ home in Juhu. The reason for the move is said to be Hrithik’s romantic liaison with his Kites co-star Barbara Mori.

The buzz is that Susanne had been trying to cope with it for months, but finally made up her mind to walk out. The Roshan family insists that the star’s wife has shifted temporarily due to renovations in the house, but according to close sources, that’s far from the truth.

Barbara not a phase
A family friend of the Roshans informs us, “Hrithik and Susanne have been having problems for a while now. Initially, everyone thought that Barbara was just another phase in his life. Nobody expected Hrithik to get so serious about her. Susanne has been trying to come to terms with it. But when nothing worked, even her parents supported Susanne in her decision to leave him.”

Family ‘affairs’
Rumours about the Hrithik-Barbara affair have been the talk of the industry for over two months now. The couple apparently got really close during the last shooting spell in Mumbai. Hrithik has also become extremely fond of her family, including her mother and  her brother. Hrithik apparently even made a trip to Amby Valley near Lonavala with the actresses’ family, minus his wife.

Few appearances
Reveals a source, “The couple hasn’t been making public appearances together for months, including at awards functions. However, when the talk of trouble in their marriage began getting louder, they made an appearance together at Amrita Arora’s wedding, but their body language spoke volumes.

Last week, they even made an appearance at Manish Malhotra’s fashion show but something went wrong after that.”

Roshans hope…
It’s believed that Susanne has taken the final step after a lot of consideration. “Both Sanjay and Zarine Khan have given her the emotional strength to take the right call. All they want for their daughter is her happiness,” says our source.

However, Susanne still continues to be on good terms with Hrithik’s family, who are hoping that this is just a momentary roadblock in the relationship. Pinky and Rakesh Roshan haven’t given up hope yet. “They are hoping to find a solution to the problem once Hrithik is back in town,” says the friend.

“Something major must have happened between the couple in the last three days because Susanne walked out of the house when Hrithik was away,” reveals the source. Barbara Mori is believed to be abroad.

Very much in love
All calls to Susanne remained unparents’ home. But she insisted it wasn’t because she had walked out on her husband.

“This is completely untrue. Duggu and Susanne are very happy and very much in love. Susanne had to shift out of their flat last week with the two kids as their ceiling is undergoing anti-termite treatment. The kids can’t stay at home while the treatment is going on so Susanne is staying at her mom’s place.”

“Susanne should be back home in a couple of days when work gets over,” added Sunaina. But even if they make up, sources close to the couple insist they’ll be treading on thin ice.

Hrithik flies from SA to save marriage
Hrithik Roshan flew in last night from South Africa and drove straight to meet Susanne at her parents’ place in Juhu.
Said Hrithik, “I am here sitting with Susanne in her mom’s house after dining with the entire family. We have both shifted here for a week with the kids because of termite problems.
“We are renovating sections of our floor.”
