Vivek Oberoi on love, life and a fresh innings in Bollywood

By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 27, 2009)

• You have got some good reviews for your role in Kurbaan.

Yes. I have not stopped smiling since the film’s release. At one of the trials, Bebo (Kareena Kapoor) and Saif (Ali Khan) did tell me that I was good in the film. Then Karan (Johar) and Rensil (D’Silva)also told me the same thing. I had not seen the film till then as I was shooting in Hyderabad. It was a nice feeling when Karan told me ‘finally you make me proud.’ I saw the film just a day before its release and I had knots in my stomach. I was very nervous but I was with people who have always been kind to me. There were Shah Rukh and Gauri, Imran and his fiancée Avantika, Yash uncle, Davidji (Dhawan). They all hugged me and said I was good.

• Why have you not done a romantic film after Saathiya?

Honestly, I really don’t know. Kurbaan has got a romantic track but Mission Istanbul and Shootout At Lokhandwala had zero romance. I have not done an out-and-out romantic film and I am really looking forward to doing one.

• People are saying that you have changed and that you want to leave the controversies behind and concentrate only on your work.

I wanted this for a really long time. However, after Shootout… things did not fall in place. Almost four years ago, when I did Omkara, I saw Saif getting under the skin of the character Langda Tyagi. I loved the work ethics. That’s when I thought that I should stop doing what I was doing, but I had a backlog to finish. Then my close friend Amit Chandra sat me down and helped me streamline my life so that I could practically achieve what I was trying to. Now, I have learnt not to take anything for granted.

• How did Ramu and you patch up?

I don’t think patch up is the right word as we were never at loggerheads. I will never have the audacity to say anything against Ramu and as an artiste, I will always be indebted to him for giving me Company. But when he called me and told me ‘I will never work with you again’, I was shocked. Now, when he called me and said that he had something for me, I was so happy. When I met him, he said that he could see the same passion in my eyes again and gave me Rakta Charitra. I felt exactly the same on the first day of Rakta Charitra that I felt on the first day on the sets of Company. Ramu made me feel so comfortable.

• You have done some amazing stunts in Prince, something which you are not known for.

Yes. Kookie Gulati is quite a whiz kid. I did so many things that I cannot possibly explain — right from learning how to skateboard, doing parkour, learning cable work, to action training. I had to put so many things into my system that after the training session, things became easier.

• You have said that you are done with apologising to people.

I made a mistake and it is human to make mistakes. Personally, I think it’s humbling and it’s also building character to stand up and say I made a mistake and please forgive me. It is always an ego-based thing to say that why should I apologise. It is a real man who can say ‘I am sorry’ and that too in public. I have said sorry to the assistant director whom I was rude to, I have said sorry to the movie star whom I had a fight with and I even said sorry to the director I snapped at.

HOT! Vivek Oberoi, Neeru Singh, Nandana Sen and (below) Aruna Shields
Meet Vivek Oberoi in his new avatar in Kumar Taurani’s action thriller

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; November 22, 2009)

It could well be Bollywood’s answer to Ian Fleming’s James Bond franchise said Kumar Taurani about his early 2010 release Prince — It’s Showtime. This action-adventure that has Vivek Oberoi as the Prince was shot extensively on foreign locales at a budget that can make you go ‘phew’. “It’s like Vivek’s comeback to mainstream commercial cinema. He’ll be in the super-league after this one,” promised Kumar. Prince is a “thriller with a heart’’ and has enthralling stunts and endearing music. “It has a very intriguing plot and, of course, bikini-clad women who are more than just eye-candy,’’ revealed Kumar. Vivek plays an espionage agent who’s suffering from memory loss and each of the three women he dates, tells him that she is his “Maya’’. So there’s Nandana Sen who has carved a niche for herse in Bollywood, Neeru Singh has done Punjabi films with Harbhajan Mann, and Arun Shields, an actress from the UK who’s making her Hindi film debut with Prince. “Ou script required glamourous girls,’’ said Kumar who feels that fresh talent adds novelty to the plot.
The filmmaker is also happy because those who have seen the theatrical promos have said that it reminded them of the Bond and Bourne Hollywood series. “There are unbelievable action sequences with Vivek hanging mid-air, heavy-duty combat scenes shot in an aircraft, fights on trains/planes and what-have-you. The film is one of those fast, furious, sleek affairs that take you on a ride of your lifetime,’’ added Kumar. “Like Tips’ earlier films, Soldier and Race, Prince — It’s Showtime will appeal to the audience who come to the movies for a rollercoaster ride of emotions and action,’’ said the filmmaker who hired some of the best foreign technicians besides Bollywood’s action king Allan Amin. “The title track sung by Atif Aslam is already a rage. My director Kookie Gulati certainly knows how to engage his crowds,’’ smiled Kumar.
Playboy Vivek Oberoi finds love on the sets of Prince. It’s his co-star Neeru Bajwa

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 14, 2009)

Vivek Oberoi, who has been single after his relationship with Aishwarya Rai ended on a bitter note in mid-2005, is fast gaining the reputation of being an incorrigible flirt. The single and ready to mingle Vivek has found a new agony aunt and is taking her advice seriously. Apparently, Kareena Kapoor had advised him to get a steady partner (on the sets of Karan Johar’s Kurbaan), and it’s hard for Vivek to ignore such wise counsel.

After his reported link-ups with Vidya Balan, Minissha Lamba and Sonam Kapoor in the recent past, the latest on his list is the pretty TV actress Neeru Bajwa, who is his co-star in Kumar Taurani’s forthcoming film Prince — It’s Showtime. And this bonding was not restricted to just lunch, coffee and dinner.

Our source revealed, “Thankfully, Vivek and Kookie did not fight over Neeru, or it might have disrupted the shoot. Soon, Neeru’s ‘friendship’ with Vivek and Kookie became the hot topic of conversation on the set.”

Naturally, Neeru stood to benefit from her ‘dosti’ with Vivek and Kookie — and she did. “Originally, she was supposed to do a very small role. But soon, her role increased and kept increasing with each passing day. First, Kookie added a song which was picturised on her, subsequently he added a few extra scenes which featured her,” our source revealed.

After Neeru made an impression in a few Punjabi movies, she starred in Shrishti Arya’s TV show Guns and Roses, shook a leg in Nach Baliye 2 with her live-in boyfriend Amit Sadh (Fear Factor, Bigg Boss 1). There were rumours that she and Amit had tied the knot. Thereafter, she virtually disappeared.

She made a public appearance only at director Arif Sheikh’s wedding on January 26 this year, where she hung around with Vivek Oberoi who also attended the wedding. Then she was seen at Kumar Taurani’s 50th birthday party on July 11, where Vivek was again present.

When we called Neeru, she laughed and said, “I hope Vivek is still enamoured by my beauty. He is a great co-star. I don’t know if there was any attraction, but I was very nervous because I was doing my first Hindi film. Vivek, Kookie and I are good friends, we hung out and got along awesomely.”

Neetu admitted that she and Amit are not a couple anymore. “Amit and I parted ways long ago. We hadn’t married,” she said.

As for her role being increased in Prince, Neeru said, “Hmm… not really. Yes, I have a big role. There was a little mystery about a song as to who will do it. Eventually, I did it.”

Kookie Gulati, who was an associate director for Ken Ghosh’s Ishq Vishk and Fida, did not deny that he and Neeru hang out together. He added, “Neeru and I are good friends. That’s it. Nothing more. I have not increased her role. The film is still being edited by a very professional editor in France. And I have no clue if she was close to Vivek. That’s between them.”
