Raveena Tandon to play Rahul Mahajan’s sister and help him pick a bride

By Zenith Sahai (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 15, 2009)

Rahul Mahajan goes looking for a bride on Rahul Dulhaniya Le Layenge, and also ends up with a sister. Raveena Tandon will perform the role of the didi, which is a pity for that’s the last role any man would imagine the gorgeous actress in.

Raveena is being paid a whopping figure to lend her moral support to Rahul Mahajan and his quest for the perfect bride.

The TV channel has been negotiating with Raveena for a day’s shoot and to promote the show. Ravi Kisen, who played Rakhi Sawant’s brother, ended up hosting another show on the channel, Raaz Pichle Janam Ka. Reliable sources from the channel say that Raveena has been offered a bomb to appear in an episode as Rahul’s sister and select a girl for her ‘brother’.

Raveena, who was seen as a judge on two children shows earlier, is also making an appearance as a judge on another channel. For the current offer, her answer simply depends on the moolah: up the offer by five lakhs and she will be the world’s best sister.

“Raveena has asked for a whopping Rs 30 lakh and the channel is offering her Rs 25 lakh for the episode,” says a source. “She normally charges around Rs 8 lakh an episode if it is a running show.”

Confirming the development, Shailaja Kejriwal, EVP Content of the channel says, “Talks are on with her at the moment.  But it has not been confirmed as yet.”

And if she has her way, she would be the highest paid actress on TV. Incidentally, Bipasha Basu who is going to be seen on a show produced by Red Chillies, has also asked for a similar amount and is being paid less than what she has asked for. “No, the amount you mention is rubbish,” says Kejriwal.

Who says time changes everything? Ask Akshay Kumar, who has stuck to his quintessential style of acting and looks just as fit and dishy as he did 15 years ago.

If anything, he has only gotten younger as time has passed by. Even the surroundings have not changed for Akshay. The sizzling rainy atmosphere, the sexy flame orange saris, a macho man caressing his woman…it’s all the same. For instance, take a closer look at these two pictures- Akshay and Raveena set everybody’s pulse racing while singing and dancing together in the rain to Tip tip barsa paani in Mohra (1994) and now, he will again set the screen on fire with Katrina Kaif in the soon-to-be-released De Dana Dan. Some things never change. And if they do, they only get better with time. Right, Akki?

Foes turn into friends, stars bonding big time now…

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; November 13, 2009)

Raj Kapoor’s famous ditty Dost Dost Na Raha can ring true for so many in Bollywood. Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor and Anupam Kher are some recent examples of friendships that have gone sour. The quest for name, fame and money has driven a wedge between friends. Down the years, one has seen many close relationships fall by the wayside like dry leaves, bereft of emotion. But an interesting phenomenon is now on the rise. Having watched countless friends turn foes, what is interesting now is to watch the reverse. Foes turning into friends.

When Hrithik Roshan blazed into Bollywood with Kaho Na Pyaar Hai in 2000, he almost wrested the reigning Badshah Shah Rukh Khan’s throne. With the paparazzi adding to their woes SRK and Duggu started out on a wrong foot. And SRK, who was hanging mid-air at a Filmfare Awards’ night event, joked saying, “Come Hrithik… come and pull me down.” However, that was another day. Today both Duggu and SRK are bonding big time. Sources say, “Every other night, the King and the Prince are dining together.’’ What makes their friendship more special is the fact that the girls, Gauri Khan and Sussanne Roshan, are also thick.

Aamir Khan admits that he didn’t approve of Salman Khan’s cavalier attitude to his work when they were filming Andaz Apna Apna. Said Aamir, “I even ticked Salman, Raveena Tandon and Paresh Rawal off during AAA because they had issues to resolve with the producer. And, they were treating the project badly.’’ Today Salman and Aamir are very good friends. Salman’s sketches on the Ghajini superstar are the piece de resistance at Aamir’s residence, and the boys often bond over a drink when AK’s wife Kiran Rao is out on her work assignment. Aamir even said, “That confrontation we had years ago has actually strengthened our bond.’’

Akshay Kumar admits that Suniel Shetty and he shared a hatelove relationship when they started out and now they have a love-love relationship which was in full force during the shoot of De Dhana Dan. Suniel said, “We were immature, yaar, now we’re men in our 40s. Where is the question of us fighting? It all seems so silly. Akki and I are not the best of friends but we do enjoy a camaraderie that is there for everyone to see.’’ If the Bollywood men are bonding big time, the women too have left their previous grievances aside and become friends. Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu who argued like cats during Ajnabi are now friends. And so are Bebo and Preity Zinta. Guess when the boys and the girls realise that they aren’t hunting the same game, they let their guard down.

Director Revathy Sharma sacks her nearly bankrupt producers; to co-produce her directorial debut

By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 09, 2009)

Jaya Bachchan and Ayesha Takia on the sets of Aap Ke Liye

Revathy Varma, whose first Hindi film Aap Ke Liye Hum starring Jaya Bachchan , Raveena Tandon, Madhavan, Ayesha Takiya and Ranvir Shorey has been grappling in troubled waters for almost a year now, is finally breathing a sigh of relief. Revathy has now decided to get the project going by producing the film herself.

Revathy said, “It was my producers who were actually responsible for all the trouble. However, I didn’t realise this initially because there were other matters like getting dates from actors and my leg injury, which made matters worse. It took months of harassment, schedules going haywire, and yes, bounced cheques to realise what the real hindrance was.”

“I was new to Mumbai and trusted my producers blindly. But soon it dawned upon me that they were with me only because I had people like Jayaji starring in my film,” she added. Ravathy first got an inkling of trouble when actress Urvashi Sharma’s cheque bounced. “Initially, I was upset with the girl for making a big issue because of the money. Later I got to know that Urvashi’s as well as many other people’s cheques had really bounced. I was horrified and embarrassed.”

Telling us about what really made her sit up and take action, Revathy said, “They made actor Swapnil Ralkar part of my film. I did not mind as he fit the role. But later they brought in another newcomer.” However, Revathy learnt that money was exchanged between the producers and the newcomer. That’s when she finally decided to part ways with her producers. “Schedule after schedule was getting cancelled and my producers always had some or the other excuse to hide their inadequacy. But when Jayaji allotted dates in January and February 2010, I had to take quick action,” added Revathy.

Revathy will now co-produce the film with a financer. A cautious Revathy said, “I checked his antecedents before partnering with him. Once bitten, twice shy. My financier will take care of the budget while I look into the creative aspects. I can finally make my film in peace.”

TV’S SIZZLING AND HOW: Rani Mukerji, Amrita Rao, Eesha Koppikhar, Genelia D’Souza andPreity Zinta.

Yes, for several actresses now… who enjoy the mass reach and moolah!

AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; October 28, 2009)

Bollywood may be big, but Tellywood’s small screen is proving to be a bigger lure for our B-town actors and actresses. After a string of Bollymen — right from Amitabh Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan — gave in to the temptation and showed their dum on television, it’s now the turn of the actresses to hog the telly-limelights. Years back, Karisma Kapur, Madhuri Dixit, Raveena Tandon and Manisha Koirala set the trend because they were not exactly hot property at the BO. Now the new brigade is jumping on the TV bandwagon also because of the draw of the mass reach and the moolah. So, while Rani Mukerji is judging a reality dance show Dance Premiere League, Amrita Rao is a celebrity panelist on a reality matchmaking show The Perfect Bride. Not too long ago, Kajol alongwith mum Tanuja and hubby Ajay Devgn had turned judge for a family show Rock N Roll Family, as had Sonali Bendre for Indian Idol, while Soha Ali Khan is hosting a game show Khelo, Jeeto, Jeeyo. Urmila Matondkar, too, had created quite a stir with Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and Waar Parivaar, while Shilpa Shetty wowed viewers with Bigg Boss. Eesha Koppikhar’s wrestling with her reality show 100 Percent De Dhana Dhan and now Genelia too is set to join the fray soon with Big Switch. Even Preity Zinta is reportedly in talks with a TV channel to host a game-show.
Having started her career in the glam world with ads on TV, for Amrita, the small screen has always held a special place. “I have never underestimated the power and the reach of television. In fact, the entire industry depends on it for promoting their films. Besides I believe that there can never be boundaries for talent. Look how the stars have been balancing it abroad. Why can’t we have equal respectability for both mediums here too,” questions the actress, who was drawn to do a reality show because of the unique concept that the show offered.
Genelia is equally excited with her foray on TV and says, “I am really very excited about this, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
And channel heads are certainly happy to get a dash of Bollywood glam to sizzle up their TRPs. Says Danish Khan, VP Marketing, of a popular channel, “It’s a win-win situation for the actor and the channel. The actor gets to connect with the masses while the channel benefits since the actors bring with them their loyal fans.”
Even as industry watchers continue to debate on the real reason behind the stars’ descent on the small screen — with most industry watchers claiming that it’s all about reaching out to the masses, and some insisting that it’s purely a case of making hay while the sun shines — the stars continue to rain on TV. Viewers are certainly not complaining about getting an extra dose of their beauty queens right in their living
rooms.

Urvashi Sharma The game of musical chairs that has been plaguing the Jaya Bachchan-Raveena Tandon-Ayesha Takiya-Madhavan starrer Aap Ke Liye Hum has finally ended.

Urvashi Sharma who was supposed to play Ranvir Shorey’s wife has been replaced by Vidya Malvade, last seen as Sanjay Dutt’s wife in Sanjay Gadhvi’s Kidnap.

But the battle it seems has just begun. While the director Revathy S Varma accuses Urvashi of un-professionalism the young actress isn’t sitting idle either. She has her own story to tell. ”I can’t understand how I can be accused of un-professionalism when the makers of this film have been the most unprofessional. Their very first cheque bounced even before the first schedule. This wouldn’t happen to Jayaji’s cheque because she’s a legend, or Raveena Tandon or Ayesha Takia because they’re both established names. Only my cheque bounced. Why?”

Urvashi however absolves the director of all blame. ”I’ve nothing against Revathy. I blame the producers for being so unprofessional.”

In the meanwhile there’s another twist to the tale with the director accusing Sonal Chauhan of spreading false rumours and causing problems for the project.

Says Revathy, ”Sonal was never approached for Ayesha’s role. She was asked to do Urvashi’s role. When she opted out we asked Priyanka Kothari who loved the character. But somehow it didn’t work out. Now we’ve got Vidya Malvade to do it. I wish people would let me make my film in peace. Urvashi behaved as though she’s a big star. We couldn’t really afford her tantrums.”

Ayesha Takia Azmi adores her new film’s hero

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; September 14, 2009)

Marriage has given Ayesha Takia Azmi a new address. She now lives in a swank South Mumbai high-rise and is married to restaurateur-cum-businessman Farhan Azmi. The attractive actress with cascading long, brown locks has received accolades for every performance of hers — be it Dor or 8 x 10 Tasveer. And, marriage hasn’t dimmed her enthusiasm towards work. She is absolutely gung ho about her latest release, Boney Kapoor’s Wanted — the film produced by Sahara One Motion Pictures and SK Films Enterprise and directed by Prabhu Devaa, that is releasing on September 18.

“Wanted is a full-on masala entertainer,’’ she smiles. “But it is not a mindless film. It has a nice engrossing story line and I can tell you people are going to love it.’’ Praising her co-star Salman Khan, Ayesha says, “He is very generous and incredible. Many actors try to steal their co-stars’ screen space; but Salman is superconfident and secure. He will never do that. I find that truly admirable.’’

At this point Ayesha is doing just one other film, that is Revathy Verma’s Aap Ke Liye Hum with Jaya Bachchan and Raveena Tandon. However, she’s definitely not giving up the arc lights. “I’m being choosier about what I sign now,’’ she says. “I want to do films that will be remembered, not run-of-the-mill stuff where I stand behind looking pretty as a picture,’’ she says.

Blissful in her new found space as a married actress she says, “Getting hitched hasn’t changed anything. I feel exactly the same. I was seeing Farhan for five years before I married him. We knew from day one that we were committed to each other and would marry. I’m now officially his wife, and though our marriage is six months old, everything around me is the same. I still spend most of my days with my husband, I shoot whenever I have to, I continue to
take interest in the business that mom and I have set up. I repeat nothing has changed.’’

Chances are that this very Friday equations will change. Wanted may bring Ayesha more bouquets than she has bargained for.

Director Revathy Varma’s knee surgery yesterday has delayed Aap Ke Liye Hum’s schedule again. Ayesha Takia is contemplating pulling out of the film
By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 08, 2009)

Ayesha Takia

Aap Ke Liye Hum, the film about an adopted mother, seems to be stuck after a series of mishaps. The latest is director Revathy Varma’s emergency knee surgery, which has once again thrown the first major schedule of the film out of gear.

Speaking about why she had to be rushed to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Hospital on Sunday (August 6), the director said, “I had to be brought here for an emergency knee surgery. I fell and hurt myself. There was some swelling. But I ignored it. On Sunday, when I was to start shooting, the pain suddenly resurfaced and got unbearable.”

Revathy underwent successful knee surgery yesterday morning.

This is the third time that the schedule of this film has been cancelled. And the effect has started rubbing off on the cast. Although every member of the cast is demoralised, the one who’s apparently losing patience fast is Ayesha Takia, who plays Jaya Bachchan’s daughter. The actress, who recently got married and is busy with various business and domestic activities, is apparently fed up with delays. It is said that Ayesha’s mother has issued the director an ultimatum. Either the film gets made within a certain time frame this year, or Ayesha opts out. It was loudly whispered that Ayesha Takia failed to turn up for the schedule. But the director denies this. All she says is, “I’m new to the ways of Mumbai. I don’t know how to handle the actors when the camera is off.”

Revathy Varma

Ayesha Takia chose to maintain a diplomatic stand on the issue. She said, “Revathy is in hospital for a knee surgery. She will be bedridden for a while. If there are no serious date issues in the future, then I am doing her film.”

With such uncertainty, it remains to be seen whether the director will now be able to pull off the tough task of bringing together the seemingly-incompatible schedules of three busy housewives, Jaya Bachchan, Raveena Tandon and Ayesha Takia and one very busy South Indian actor Madhavan, after the delays.

The Naqaab beauty is back…

MEENA IYER (BOMBAY TIMES; August 11, 2009)

Urvashi Sharma who shared screen space with Bobby Deol and Akshaye Khanna in Abbas Mustan’s disastrous Naqaab went into oblivion immediately after. Tough times followed for the Delhi beauty who was made to sit on the periphery of films doing precious nothing. All because she was under a contract with her mentors — Kumar and Ramesh Taurani. “My contract didn’t forbid me from accepting films from other banners,” clarifies Urvashi. However, producers were unwilling to approach the Tauranis to ask if they could cast her.

So Urvashi continued to do commercials and wait for the elusive film offer. D-day is here. She has just bagged a couple of meaningful films. One is Baabarr where she plays a Muslim girl from Kanpur. And there is Chashni where she will be seen alongside talents like Jaya Bachchan, Raveena Tandon and Ayesha Takia Azmi. “I’m really happy that I will be doing two to three good films soon,” says the Naqaab heroine.

She admits life in Mumbai has been tough, especially for a newbie like her who has had no friends in maximum city. “I just learnt to keep my head above the tide and keep swimming,” she says. Enrolling in a gym; doing power yoga and whathave-you, Urvashi managed to sit the tough times out and she is glad that she is headstrong enough to swing things in her favour finally. “I’m neither insecure nor unhappy,” says the 20-something, “I’m sure everyone has a period in life where they just have to sit it out and wait for the tide to turn. Isn’t this what they call destiny?”
