When actors are asked to grace an event, particularly a school function, you expect them to prove to be good role models for the kids, encouraging them to study hard and eat right. However, if the actor happens to be Salman Khan, you can expect the unthinkable.
Salman, who had been invited to judge for an event at Jamnabai Narsee school, Juhu, shared some little known anecdotes about his own school days with the kids present, all between 11-19.
“Salman had said he would come on time (4pm) and stay the whole evening. The school authorities were expecting him to make a brief appearance, but he surprised everyone by taking time off to be there throughout,” says a source.
When called on stage to say a few words, his speech took everybody by surprise. “When Salman was asked to share memories of his school days, the audience braced themselves for a dose of nostalgia. However, he recalled how he would bunk classes constantly and was rusticated from four schools. He also confessed that he was the school bully – he even asked the resident bully of the school to raise his hand. One hand did go up.” By this time, the students were almost falling off their seats while the teachers didn’t know where to look.
It didn’t end there. When he was asked by the children to dance on stage with them, he quipped, “I don’t dance without being paid.” Even before the stunned kids and teachers could recover from that statement, he had already proceeded to dance to one of his own songs on stage.

Meanwhile…
Salman’s love for kids is unbelievable. At the event, Salman went on stage twice and enjoyed himself with the kids. He danced with the kids and even promoted his forthcoming film Veer saying, ‘there is a veer in all of you’ which has got you to come on the stage and perform like this’. After the dance, he gave out music CDs of the film to the kids. While leaving the venue, some of the kids followed him. Unknowingly, his guard pushed one of them. Despite the crowd, Salman noticed this. When he realised that the kid was hurt, he lost his temper at his guard. He made his guard apologise to the kid. He also hugged the kid and gave him the music CD of Veer with his autograph on it. The child’s day was definitely made as he left with a big smile on his face and memories to last a lifetime.

Jahangir Painter (50) felt that the power cuts in his area were proving to be rather painful for his wife. It would take her too much time just to grind grains at the local flour mill. And the good man who loves his wife decided to take the matter into his hands: he bought a scooter and hitched it to the flour mill, and voila, there was no need for electricity.
His scooter powered the flour mill and it is so popular that it is now starring in 3 Idiots, where Kareena Kapoor uses it in an area in Ladakh which has no electricity. Painter even got to meet Aamir Khan last week in Mumbai.

A resident of Jalgaon (400 km from Mumbai), Painter is in the profession of painting. He has no formal education, but he always wanted to be a mechanical engineer. The nagging problem of power cuts helped him fulfil his dream, at least in part. He says, “I was irritated with this daily problem of load shedding. My wife went to the private flour mill for grinding food grains and the power cuts meant that we had to wait for hours. I went to the junk market and purchased a scooter and flour mill equipment. I spent a couple of days fitting in both engines and made a scooter flour mill. The load shedding compelled me to do something instead of sitting idly waiting for electricity. Finally, I made the scooter flour mill by just shelling out Rs 3500.”
The innovation has been appreciated widely. He says, “I contacted our city engineering college professors and got the opportunity to exhibit this scooter flour mill model. They appreciated this electricity-free model and suggested that I exhibit it at National Innovation Foundation, Ahmedabad. Here, such innovative models were displayed and the organiser sought permission to use this model in Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots. I promptly agreed. It was a great promotion for my creativity as Kareena Kapoor uses it in Ladakh where there is no electricity,” says Painter.
Painter has barely completed his primary education, because of his poor financial condition. “Actually, I wished to be a mechanical engineer, but could not study further. Since I was a child, I started working and chose painting as my livelihood. I wanted to prove that no one will stop my creativity even though I have no formal education. Five years ago, I invented a compressor for the washing machine, which was appreciated by former President Abdul Kalam. With one litre of petrol, the scooter flour mill can function for three hours and on gas, it will run for four hours,” Painter added.
He also loved the perks that came with it. He says, “Last week, I had come to Mumbai to meet Aamir Khan. He appreciated my effort and creativity. Aamir even gave me an autograph which I will preserve and cherish. I am happy that Kareena Kapoor and Aamir Khan use this scooter flour mill in 3 Idiots.”

Arjun Rampal stalked in Bhopal

| While shooting for Rajneeti in Bhopal last week, Arjun Rampal was troubled by a group of young women who decided to follow him everywhere he went. The situation soon became very uncomfortable for Arjun as the girls turned up at every location where the shoot of Rajneeti was on and one of them even managed to reach Arjun’s hotel room. Startled by their behaviour, Arjun finally decided to take action against them.
Talking about the uncomfortable situation, Arjun said, “I guess they got a little carried away so the security had to intervene. They were at the hotel and on the sets every day. I gave them my autographs and photographs but they wanted to speak to me daily. They were strictly asked to leave when they reached my room.” |
A source from the sets of Rajneeti in Bhopal said, “There was a group of girls who used to come to the sets of Rajneeti every day. Initially, they wanted to click pictures with Arjun and take his autograph, which he gladly did. Then they started coming to the sets every day and started following him. They also reached the hotel where he was staying. One girl in particular wanted to click pictures with him daily. The matter reached a point where Arjun asked the production unit to intervene. Later, one of the girls managed to get inside his hotel, found out Arjun’s room number and reached there. The security asked them to leave the hotel premises after giving them a stern warning. They were also warned that if they were seen anywhere around Arjun or on the sets again, they would be handed over to the police. The girls left without creating a fuss.”Fenil’s Bollywood Talk # 64

RENUKA SHAHANE TURNS DIRECTOR!
Everyone who has seen ‘Hum Aapke Hai Koun..!’ (HAHK) must be aware of this actor. In the film, she played Pooja, Prem’s (Salman Khan) elder sister who meets with a tragic death. Renuka Shahane had become very popular after this film. She also acted in some of the sitcoms earlier. Although she became a known face after HAHK, she wasn’t seen in many films. But now she’s back as a director. Her first film, a Marathi one, titled Rita, is all set to release tomorrow. Renuka Shahane is also there in the film along with Pallavi Joshi, Suhasini Mulay, Mohan Agashe and others. Jackie Shroff also has an important role in the film. Rita in fact is Jackie’s first Marathi film. Surprisingly, just last week, he was seen as a Punjabi farmer in Kisaan.
Rita is adapted from a Marathi novel Rita Welingkar written by the eminent critic Shanta Gokhale, who is also Renuka’s mother. One look at the promo of the film proves that Renuka has sensitively handled the film and will surely impress the audiences. Co-incindentally, women debut directors have fared exceptionally well this year. Zoya Akhtar’s Luck By Chance was a top-notch product while Firaaq by Nandita Das was one of the most impactful films of this year.
The reason why I wrote about this film is because Renuka Shahane stays just a minute away from my house! She used to stay there with her mother until she got married. She occasionally visits her mother but still, I haven’t seen her even once. But I had a chance to meet his husband, actor Ashutosh Rana. I remember the date quite well-it was Jan 5, 2003. My friend stays in the building opposite Renuka Shahane’s and both these buildings share a common compound. I and my friends were playing there when a car stopped outside the compound and Ashutosh Rana came out. He was dressed as a neta-it was the get-up for his film, maybe. He went straight to Renuka’s house. At that time, I didn’t even know that Renuka Shahane’s home is located there and that Rana is her husband! After my knowledge was updated about this, I and my pals decided to take his autograph. I quickly went to my house and got a diary. We all were too scared to press the bell of the house. Finally, I went ahead and did the needful. Renuka’s mother (Ashu’s mother-in-law Shanta Gokhale, who wrote the novel from where Rita is adapted) opened the door. I told her about our wish to take Ashutosh’s autograph. She smiled, pinched my cheeks and went inside to call the actor! He came out and was too glad to fulfill our wish!
From that day onwards, whenever I hear about Renuka Shahane or even Ashutosh Rana, this incident instantly comes to my mind!

SHOB CHARITRO KALPONIK RELEASED
Just imagine-a Bipasha Basu film released last Friday and hardly anyone knows about it. The film in question is Shob Charitro Kalponik (SCK), a Bengali film by the well-known director Rituparno Ghosh. The film had created some hype ever since news spread that Bipasha will be seen in a Bengali film. Last I had heard was Bips’ voice is dubbed and that Big Pictures have backed the film.
The film got a good release in Kolkata. In Mumbai it was released only in 2 multiplexes, 1 show in each and both these multiplexes are in South Mumbai. It is shocking that a Bipasha Basu film got such hype-less release. English subtitles were also there and so even non-Bengali viewers would have surely come to see the film, provided the film was promoted well and adequate shows were organized in more multiplexes throughout the city.
4 years back, even Antar Mahal (AM), starring Abhishek Bachchan, Soha Ali Khan, Jackie Shroff and Raima Sen had released without any hype. But compared to SCK, AM had more number of shows. Critics had reviewed AM but in the case of SCK, I didnt see it’s single review in any newspaper. Maybe even the critics werent aware of its release! Very unfortunate!
